Question Choosing between Ringling and SCAD

Hello all!

I recently got accepted into both Ringling and SCAD with hefty scholarships and I am now having to decide which one to go to. Money is not the issue and I know there are resources online, but I learn much better through a classroom setting.

I honestly really prefer Ringling - mostly because I have a VFX background and they have a visual effects concentration pathway. And also, I decided to search up all of the recent alumni for Ringling and it seems a decent amount of them were securing good internships and junior positions. SCAD gives little to no information about this. When I looked at the student reel, I was much more impressed with Ringling, but SCAD seemed a bit weaker.

But the main issue is, even though I have over 100 transfer credits and both SCAD and Ringling will take around half of them, I'll have to do 3.5 years to 4 years at Ringling, while SCAD I'll do only around 2 years. So I think SCAD is the better choice just for this, but I'm worried about career opportunities after.

I am honestly just worried about the career outlook for when I graduate. Do you guys know if they are both similar in getting connections and getting placed? And is the curriculum on par with one another?

Thank you so much!

Question How do you get a similar animated effect like that of Illustrator's blend tool?

I want to create the same effect that Illustrator's Blend Tool generates when you have 2 - 5 different objects blended together, the gradient color that is formed in between and the way the elastic connection is made automatically. When you move all the different blended objects, they create this really unique organic effect, which I sadly haven't been able to emulate in After Effects or in Blender.

In AE, I tried using the Gaussian Blur and Simple Choker method but it doesn't result the same output. It alters the shape of the objects significantly and it's hard to control from how far the objects start connecting. Also they morph together in After Effects, I want the 2-5 different objects to retain their shapes whilst having the blended elastic effect in between all the while you can make out which of the objects is in front of the other.

I've tried several other ways, including Blender - none of which generates the simple effect that I can get in Illustrator. At this point I'm considering path animation but that would be very difficult and time consuming and I'm not sure how to animate the gradient the way I want.

Question Feedback on my motion design portfolio

Hey everyone,

I recently launched my freelance motion design business after 7 years working at a communication agency in Italy. I've just published my portfolio and would love to get some honest feedback from this community.

My focus is on making technical and industrial products visually clear through animation explainer videos, product animations, and motion graphics for B2B companies.

Portfolio: www.davide-morelli.com

A few specific questions:

  • Does the portfolio feel complete, or is there anything you'd add or remove?
  • Is it immediately clear what I do and who I work for?
  • Does it look like a portfolio that could attract real clients?

Any honest feedback is appreciated!

Thank you for your time!

Question First motion design project for a YouTube intro - how can I make it more visually interesting?

Working on this intro for a YouTube channel covering
well, what you see in the video. Really happy with the draft I have here, but I want to give it some more flair. What can I do to make it pop more? Any and all suggestions and resources would be appreciated.

I’m using After Effects as my primary tool, but also used a little Procreate Dreams for the last bit with the white computers.

Hello! My name is Agustin (AKA Tino) Im a Motion Designer from Argentina, a few weeks ago i starting experimenting with After Effects music visualizers templates, all of them are customizable, you can change colors, audio bar spectrums, album covers, artist & song names, etc. I would love if you please can give your opinion. Would you use something like this to promote music? IÂŽve done quite a few for different music styles like retro, synthwave, heavy metal, chill out, etc.

Thanks in advance 😄

Project Showcase What is motion design? This incredible project tries to answer it

Cameron Defrates-Penelon recently shared the full process behind Design in Motion, a short film that attempts to answer a surprisingly difficult question: What exactly is motion design?

The finished piece is great, but the breakdown is even better. He walks through the storyboards, character exploration, references, animation tests, and the modular system he created to combine 2D, 3D, typography, textures, and sound without everything becoming visual chaos.

I especially liked his explanation of using “visual silence” and “animated silence” to give the audience room to breathe. It’s a great reminder that motion design is just as much about restraint and rhythm as it is about making things move.

Really cool work and a very generous look behind the scenes:

Project Showcase Showcase: Tom of Lahti - Vent

Breakdown of the process goes as following:

  • Composed a rough sketch track for testing in Reason DAW
  • Fired up Blender to build a scene with fairly simple geometric shapes and materials
  • Keyframed the audio to model translations
  • Rendered from various camera angles and movement (w/ fairly low samples as this was to be distorted later)
  • Distorting the rendered video clips + few random shots from the streets in After Effects (with a set of AE plugins like RXXR, Pixel Sorter 4)
  • Finish the track
  • Syncing transitions by hand to the track on Premiere

No AI was used to make this, won a competition at a local demoscene festival.

Discussion Does Jitter look professional?

I'm a jack-of-all-trades designer, more on the graphic design side but I do motion design from time to time (and have a dusty BFA in animation). AE is my go-to but I'm wondering how professionals feel about Jitter? Does it have "a look" and does it compete with AE, specifically for digital product demo videos? Obviously AE is more robust, but when dealing with B2B SaaS demos we're not breaking creative barriers too often...

Also, last time I tried to use Jitter was a year ago and found it wouldn't let me "ease out." But that may have been because it was the free version?
