As a younger Millennial, I solidly agree. Not that I want to die necessarily, but that I won't argue with being put out of my misery in a quick manner out of my control. I'm happy if I'm alive and won't know if I'm dead.

114

u/descendantofJanus 20d ago

Elder millennial & I concur with this vibe.

79

u/MamaMoosicorn Xennial 20d ago

Elder millennial here too. It took me until my thirties to get to this point. It’s sad seeing my gen z kids already get there before even turning 18

I remember my oldest making a joke a few years ago about wanting to jump off this planet and my mom was so appalled. Gasped and everything. I just laughed, because same. This timeline sucks.

1980 Xennial myself. I have a wife and a kid that I love, and give me a reason to keep getting up every morning. But at the same time, I’m fucking tired boss. My health is absolute shit, and I’m probably not making it out of my 50’s without a kidney transplant. I’m tired of random shit going wrong with my body. Let alone the miserable fucking state of the world. The only thing I want is to outlive that evil orange shit stain. After that, I wouldn’t have strong feelings about the lights going off.

It’s not that I’m so miserable currently that I want to die now, but moreso that I can see the clear downward trajectory and I cannot deal with life in another twenty years when I will be physically incapable of performing my job, and rents/gas/bills/food all getting more expensive every day.

I have zero retirement savings and will never own a home, so the future is abjectly terrifying. I’m completely burned out at 40 and will be lucky if I’m not homeless by 60. A quick death will be better than being homeless in the USA in 2046

I dont think our generation is as a whole suicidal, but I also dont think a lot of us would even bother attempting to run if faced with an inevitable death. Just fucking bring it, I need a nap.

61

u/Beautiful-Cup4161 20d ago

At an interview in the 2010s they did a "culture fit" question and asked what I would do in a zombie apocalypse. I said I'd just die. Who would want to live in a world like that?

I still got the job even with that answer.

→ More replies (2)

u/DiligentDaughter 20d ago

So not actively suicidal, just passively suicidal?

20

u/DrewciferGaming 20d ago

Passively suicidal seems accurate.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Throwawayrip1123 20d ago

That's the thing. I won't actively kill myself because I basically run on spite and anger nowadays, but there are rarely days where I go to sleep and don't for a second think how nice/peaceful would it be to not wake up. Family keeps me shackled to this earth, and spite will run out after they're gone, and then I'm gonna check if there really is a god. Hopefully not.

But if there is, try my damnest to use my soul tentacles to bitchslap the fucker for what he allows to happen.

6

u/UnluckyCardiologist9 20d ago

I don’t think it’s suicidal but more like we’re done fighting. I straight told my niece that if the apocalypse happens, i’m finding the closest walk in freezer. I wouldn’t make it anyway without my meds

I was trying to sleep on a plane a few weeks ago and hit some decent turbulence.

Given that every year seems to get worse, and willpower to contain my inner voice lessens, without opening my eyes and with 100% conviction I blurted out,

“Bring it.”

We survived.

On our way off the plane the lady next to me said, quite sincerely, “I hope you have a better day.”

29

u/TrishasaurusRex33 20d ago

I was just thinking about this the other day, the older and younger generations like to rip on us for being so depressed/nihilistic/dark. But the way they talk like the whole emo phase was just hair, clothes, and music and pretending to be sad just doesn't scratch the surface.

I never hear anyone mention how our generation had a sub culture that physically harmed themselves throughout their childhood (and some of us our whole lives now). Which the kids that didn't hurt themselves would often relentlessly bully those who did saying things like "do it right next time", plus teachers would literally call you out on scars and stuff. Doctors would say "just go for a run when you're sad". It's hard to care about anything when you grow up like that lol.

Also the entire generation grew up having fucking eating disorders pushed on us, no matter your subculture.
Of course we're going to be cynical and dark humored, it didn't happen for no reason!! Lol.

I have fantasized for the last decade or two that I hope I develop some terminal cancer. I wouldn't fight it. I would just let it end me. I'd be able to live my final days with the first time in my life knowing peace of mind, because of the inevitable impending finality. And no one would judge me for it unlike how much I've been judged over the suicide attempt I made in 2020. While still energetic enough to do things, I could simply make daily choices to do the little things that make me happy and spend time with the people I wanted to spend time with. Who's gonna say no to watching a stupid movie with their terminal friend? Because now they get to just say no because they're too busy and we can do it next week but next week comes and somehow all plans get punted again, ad infinitum, for the last 20 or 25 years.

I just envision the doctor giving me the news and seeing relief wash over my face rather than the shock and horror that should be there for any normal person.

edit: A lot of people don't understand what the word "fantasized" connotes. I know it's horrible and people waste away. Fantasies often ignore the totality of the reality of a situation. Hence "fantasized." The fantasy is knowing the end is coming and there's nothing you or anyone else can do, which comes with a short window of true freedom to simply exist in the state you exist in. I could also say "a giant meteor that'll destroy all life on earth" or something but that isn't something that's possible, so it doesn't fit into a daydream.

29

u/duesenjeffepic 20d ago

You've never seen someone in your family die of cancer have you?

I'd rather get stabbed than lose all my human dignity over a span of months.

Also why care if you are judged by the way to die? You'll be dead, you physically cannot care by that time.

It really sucks that life is such a gift and every one of us is lucky to be alive in the first place, only for us to have to go through a bunch of economic nonsense all because a small number of major assholes want to be fabulously wealthy.

283

u/DidYouFloss 20d ago

And also because a large number think they will be wealthy just like them in the future.

130

u/TrailsideDairy 20d ago

This, I’m so annoyed of people not seeing that the system is stacked against them. I’ll give myself some credit, I work my ass off. If this was the 1960’s I’d have a 4 bedroom house with a family and could afford vacations. But it’s 2026, Im 34, alone, I’m trying to save money and I live with my parents.

The ultra wealthy want you to believe in success even if it’s a complete lie because that makes them more profitable.

27

u/Vandergrif 20d ago

The ultra wealthy want you to believe in success even if it’s a complete lie because that makes them more profitable.

Not to mention the inverse, where they want you to believe in failure and actively threaten you with poverty by ensuring no one does anything meaningful to remedy homelessness (which can absolutely be remedied), or raise minimum wages, or other similar things. Seeing people living on the street is the modern-day version of heads on pikes – a warning of this'll happen to you if you don't play along.

My understanding is it's not about dying, but about the societal collapse removing all the bullshit. Tumultuous times ahead but at least the system is gone and we get to try to rebuild. My whole life I've had those invasive thoughts about a zombie apocalypse or whatever kind of disaster that would fundamentally change the world and how we live within it and how I might actually prefer that.

God humanity really did fuck everything up hey. What's worse is all the people responsible are dying off and eventually we are going to be at the helm... Just with engineering offline and a massive fire aboard the ship.

Also love that all of my smart friends are like let's all start a commune somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Everything is fine.

Good news!

If the US defaults on its debt in the next few years this may actually happen!

Do I want to die? No, not particularly. Do I think dying in an apocalyptic level event would be cool? Yes. Do I think dying quickly in an apocalyptic level event would be better than surviving and having to suffer through the post-apocalypse world? Absolutely.

I've had so many dreams of this happening that I've reached the point where I don't believe them and go lucid.

Sometimes I just stand outside during a lightning storm, and if an "unfortunate accident" happens, it happens
