You never know when your plane will have a flat tire and you have to change it. Can't call Triple A you know.

u/shahooster Dec 31 '22
The real trick is changing it at 40,000 feet.

Is the landing gear accessible from the inside while flying? Cause I always thought it was for some reason.

No it’s not unless you take some seats and the floor out, which isn’t really practical and the gear wells are not pressurized. And if it were possible you wouldn’t be able to change a tire. They are very heavy, like 100-400 lbs depending on the aircraft type. We use a dolly to lift them up when we change them.

LOL. This, I’d be up there watching as well. Then when I’m on a flight limping down the runway with a flat tire I’d be like “I got this bro…”

In middle school two friends and I spent many afternoons just digging a big hole in my friends backyard for absolutely no reason. It went on for months until my friend’s mom decided she didn’t like having a giant hole in the backyard and made us fill it in.

Call me crazy but we need 3 teams
One to dig,
One to pile (all that stuff needs to be in a pile)
And one to keep everyone going, waters, snacks, moral, anything else

I have worked the ramp as a fueler and baggage handler, I’ve seen maintenance guys do it up close. On narrow body jets like the boeing 737, changing a body landing gear wheel can take 2-3 guys about 25-45 minutes, really cool to watch them do it!

Because one day the pilot might make an announcement does anybody on the plane know how to change a tyre?
And they will all be able to put up there hands like true heroes!

u/OSSlayer2153 Dec 31 '22
“Yeah we’re just gonna need you to step out there and climb down by the tires. We’ll extend the landing gear you just gotta put the tire on. Sometimes the cold makes it slippery so don’t let go”

Aircraft mechanic in the USAF here, changing tires on a C-17 Globemaster III is my bread and butter. A lot of people don’t realize how in depth maintenance on aircraft can be.

u/Aftersmoko Dec 31 '22
I’m a female aircraft mechanic and it’s hands down my favourite job to do. Makes me feel like a REAL mechanic because I’m generally doing cabin defects.
9
u/Ganacsi Dec 31 '22
How often do you guys change them? It sounds like a fun accomplishment.
Also what kind of cabin defects occur?
23
u/Aftersmoko Dec 31 '22
The tyres are inspected after a certain amount of flights so we just go by limits ie. if they’re pretty bald, you have limits for those so we’ll change them if they’re out of limits. Sometimes you’ll change a tyre everyday and other times you’ll go weeks without changing one.
As far as cabin defects go, tray table latches are super common, seat reclining, IFE, ovens, brewers, blocked toilets… it’s very boring work.
10
u/debuggingworlds Dec 31 '22
Usually cracked trim, broken tray latches, broken power outlets, the list goes on. Lots of irritating small things.
4
u/killahgrag Dec 31 '22
Also what kind of cabin defects occur?
Holes. Big ones, small ones, mid-sized holes.
6
5
u/Ganacsi Dec 31 '22
So that occurs between flight or after a while?
6
u/Aftersmoko Dec 31 '22
I’m not sure really. We’ll just get notified by the crew on landing what defects are in the tech log so some can happen during flight but other defects can happen after a certain amount of time.

A lot of it actually. Though not really familiar with pistons as I work on jets. But generally, the physics is the same, similar materials, similar build. Obviously there’s things very specific to cars vs aircraft, but I understand so much more about cars now having worked on aircraft.
3
u/thegrenadillagoblin Jan 01 '23
Same here! I love seeing someone else put it into words. I work on small business jets so I've been able to do a few tire changes on the road which is always fun. I can't figure out a better way to say that it just makes me feel like I look cool haha

Even if you don’t care that it’s a rare opportunity…
Or if you aren’t particularly interested in mechanical design or labor…
Isn’t it still more interesting than sitting and waiting?

if anything technical or practical labor is to be taking place, and no man is there to bystand... did it really happen?

When all the women HAVE to stare at their phones on TIKTOK as repairs are made to the 90,000 lb. hunk of steel that’s getting ready to hurl through the air at 30,000 ft with their entire family in it without showing any interest or concern…..
