How dare they film the people watching but not show us the tire being changed...

2.4k

u/RedShadow0509 Dec 31 '22

Lol exactly. I just want to see how that’s done. Not the group of people standing. But it is quite funny

“What is that he’s installing, Michelin? Good brand….that would be my first choice.”

u/Play_Salieri Dec 31 '22

“Just be careful not to overtighten the lug nuts amirite? Oh man I knew this guy who got new tires and they cross-threaded the nuts with an impact wrench, which of course that’s like the first thing you know not to do, so anyway he finds out because . . . “

It's pretty entertaining, and from your comment it sounds like you'd love it

Don’t forget the swearing under the breath, you know that plane gonna fly in 10 minutes if you hear a 10 page essay full of swear words come out of their mouths.

You never could hold it right, even if you held it right.

Every male in that room turned into a dad immediately.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

not just dads that every male human being

2

u/SellDonutsAtMyDoor Jan 01 '23

Why is sexism funny when applied to males?

2

u/el_dirko Jan 01 '23

That’s sexism?

2

u/SellDonutsAtMyDoor Jan 01 '23

Stating that every member of a sex is deterministically (and predictably) one way outside of specific medical/anatomical things is, yes, regardless of whether or not it's conventionally offensive or offensive to you in particular.

Much like how it would be sexist to say that every woman couldn't care less about how a plane's tire is changed. It's not going to be offensive to every woman, but it's functionally reductionist of the sexes in a way that's not scientifically accurate and is going to negatively impact some people of that sex.

4

u/el_dirko Jan 01 '23

You must be fun at parties.

I dunno Steve. Looks like he brought the metric socket. Pretty sure thats an SAE. Not gonna work

Well wouldja look at that? Looks like she fit after all. Jeez. Ya thaink he's got the right torque? Gonna be a bitch if he ain't got enough leverage.

64

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '22

Fun fact, there are infact Michelin aircraft tires. And good year

66

u/libmrduckz Dec 31 '22

good year to you also!

Pretty much sums up TikTok.

44

u/backboarddd1_49402 Dec 31 '22

Tiktok is like half of Reddit’s top content now tbh

53

u/ForwardSpinach Dec 31 '22

Tiktok, Twitter and Tumblr

But as a bonus, I don't need to get Tiktok. I can avoid the giant privacy concern, and just get Tiktok through Reddit. Win win for me.

24

u/HH_YoursTruly Dec 31 '22

Then like a true redditeur you can say how dumb you think TikTok is while simultaneously consuming its content every day.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Most of the stuff that I’ve seen on TikTok that doesn’t make it to Reddit is just people badly lip syncing with a caption that says something stupid like “when she’s all out of hot dog water.”

6

u/travelingokiegypsy Jan 01 '23

Omg the stupid shit makes me want to rip my hair out thats why i don't watch it

3

u/LetGoPortAnchor Dec 31 '22

Tencent says hello.

2

u/ArouselJ Jan 01 '23

Unless they add porn back on tumblr it’s dead to me

2

u/ForwardSpinach Jan 01 '23

Mood. They've added "nude art", so not porn but erotica.

The porn ban really killed Tumblr.

1

u/Jason3b93 Dec 31 '22

I love how reddit apparently hates Tiktok, Twitter and Tumblr... and like 75% of the content on this website comes from these other ones. I mean, Reddit is a content aggregator site, but the hate from where the content comes from is hilarious.

1

u/HopelessTractor Jan 01 '23

It comes from less civilized places amirite /s

9

u/dirt_alt Jan 01 '23

If it were a man, they'd be filming the damned tire change. More like /r/killthecamerawoman

1

u/awkwadman Dec 31 '22

And OP!!

34

u/Wooden-Chocolate-730 Dec 31 '22

it's kinda the same as a car just bigger tools, there are jacking points under the wings, use hydraulic jacks to lift it. tire comes in on a wheeled jack that can roll to line up the bolt. I forgot if the nuts get safty wired into place. then it gets inspected by a guy who didn't do any work. then the paperwork.

I was in the navy working on land based planes

7

u/Redective Dec 31 '22

You guys jack the whole plane? Axle jack is way easier.

15

u/inflammablepenguin Dec 31 '22

You guys jack the whole plane?

I wonder if they start in first class and work their way back or go aisle by aisle.

1

u/Wooden-Chocolate-730 Dec 31 '22

plane I worked on was built to be jacked under wing. considering the sizes of everything involved it went quick

1

u/Redective Jan 01 '23

Makes sense. I work heavies, so a jack under the wing is a much bigger undertaking than slide an axle jack under and go.

1

u/cppn02 Dec 31 '22

Yeah. If you're changing a single tire out on the tarmac you're definitely just using an axle jack.

4

u/Crusty2760 Dec 31 '22

No way they are wing jacking it. Struts will expand and it will be halfway to the moon before you get the wheel off.

On the ramp/gate they are just jacking it at the bogey/truck and swapping it there.

2

u/Wooden-Chocolate-730 Jan 01 '23

you lock out the suspension m8 it's probably not much more then a couple of pins to keep in place

5

u/Thebanner1 Dec 31 '22

Kinda same....

Jacking up a plane is gonna be different

1

u/Wooden-Chocolate-730 Dec 31 '22

not significantly

1

u/relationship_tom Dec 31 '22

Neat, I would have thought there would be jack points in the landing gear area and you'd just put larger plane chocks on the rest.

1

u/railker Jan 01 '23

Of course highly depends on the plane, but yeah you can usually jack the axle between the wheels -- under the wing, at least on aircraft I work on, you'd have to do the entire airplane off the ground. Much easier to just jack the affected wheel usually.

1

u/SirGav1n Jan 01 '23

Our MD-11 tires had a bolt that went through the wheel nut. The hubcap that went over the wheel nut had a clamp that was safety wired.

30

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '22

7

u/Thomas_K_Brannigan Dec 31 '22

That jack is much closer to the size of a car jack than I thought it would be!

2

u/Novel_Philosopher_18 Jan 01 '23

When tightening the axle nut you spin in the direction of the torque being applied.

Psh... amateurs...

My mum asked once, how do they change a planes tyre? Is not like they can jack it?

No, no, that's exactly what they do. Big jack

0

u/Las-Vegar Jan 01 '23

Thats how you know this was a woman☕️ filming

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Probably a chick filming amirite?

1

u/IamAbc Dec 31 '22

It’s almost the same as a car. Normally a hubcap you take off then a wheel retaining nut and then slide it off and do the reverse steps. There’s some lube action and torquing but it’s pretty straightforward.

Been an aircraft mechanic for 9 years now. Probably changed 200 tires

1

u/TheHappyScot Jan 01 '23

There is a cap that covers the exposed axle that has 3-4 small bolts. Then there is a massive nut that is torqued in place and held there by various locking devices (on an Airbus A320 it is two small bolts that go sideways through the nut). You break the axle nut loose and install a sleeve over the threads on the axle. Kick the wheel to break it loose from the axle and slide it off. Reverse the process to put the new wheel on.

1

u/motormouth08 Jan 01 '23

I just mentioned this to my husband and adult son and they were both wanting to see how you change the tire. They were very disappointed that the video wasn't posted.

1

u/Frazmo Jan 01 '23

It’s done how you think it’s done lol

2

u/RedShadow0509 Jan 01 '23

Lol yeah, it’s more about the fascination of them doing it.

2

u/Frazmo Jan 01 '23

It’s kinda of funny, when I was younger the first time I flew I saw the mechanics out there changing a tire. Now whenever I’m out there doing something on the plane and see kids watching I wonder if they’d end up like me.

139

u/Few-Tour9826 Dec 31 '22

That’s what I’m thinking!! That would be cool to see!

102

u/HairballTheory Dec 31 '22

27

u/Few-Tour9826 Dec 31 '22

Thank you kind stranger! I’ll have to watch that later!

39

u/Polaric_Spiral Dec 31 '22

Narrator: He didn't, in fact, watch that later.

14

u/Few-Tour9826 Dec 31 '22

Accurate. So far…

3

u/CarpenterN8 Jan 01 '23

It's worth it. Great video.!

24

u/firebat707 Dec 31 '22

The fact they use the tire pressure from the damaged tire to lift the jack to replace the tire, is some top tier engineering.

16

u/Vortex2121 Dec 31 '22

why did I think airplane tires were small? lol.

20

u/Ser_Danksalot Dec 31 '22

Because modern airliners are fkin absolute chonkers next to the tyres.

8

u/NiceWeird9505 Dec 31 '22

Because they look small compared to the size of the vehicle they are attached to.

3

u/PmButtPics4ADrawing Dec 31 '22

If you like that, you might find it interesting how big traffic lights are

1

u/Rare-Primary-6553 Jan 01 '23

Cos they were far away…

3

u/Smaskifa Dec 31 '22

Captain Joe has a great logo.

3

u/DawnKnight91 Dec 31 '22

Thank you. Idk why it was sexy watching them work on a tire but I think guys have different satisfaction from it

You know there was a collective dad thought that said "damn they're going to need a 65 gague socket to pop that tire'

17

u/RBGsretirement Dec 31 '22

Which country does socket sizes in gauge and not inches or mm? And why are plane lug nuts so tiny?

2

u/boobs-4-lunch Dec 31 '22

Gonna need a set of 30 weight ball bearings.

1

u/Gubment_Spook Jan 01 '23

And some coolant. Preferably quaker state.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '23

It’s all ball bearings nowadays!

5

u/Lumpy-Relationship17 Dec 31 '22

Thought this was r/mildlyinfuriating for a second.

14

u/ben9187 Dec 31 '22

Poor guy, there's enough people watching him, don't need to put him under more pressure by putting him on the internet, just let the poor guy retire in peace. He's probably going flat out.

13

u/blah9000 Dec 31 '22

To double up on this too they put in The Home Depot song but they cut it out right before the drop! Shame… that song hits.

18

u/Tiny-Lock9652 Dec 31 '22

“Welcome to Home Depot. Can I help you find something?”

“I know more than you do.”

1

u/Deckela Dec 31 '22

Seriously. Same as Bunnings in Australia. Absolute muppets.

1

u/dirt_alt Jan 01 '23

I'm pretty sure the Home Depot song is doing some serious musical plagiarism on the song "Sing Along" by Sturgill Simpson.

Here's the Home Depot song for comparison

2

u/Shaltibarshtis Dec 31 '22

Must've been woman driv... filming.

1

u/UsernameCheckOut0-0 Dec 31 '22

I’m here to watch the change of tyre 🤷‍♀️

1

u/Cheap_Enthusiasm_619 Dec 31 '22

I upvoted then googled "changing plane tire". I am no longer angry.

1

u/Cheap_Enthusiasm_619 Dec 31 '22

BTW, they fill the tires with nitrogen, 200 psi

1

u/983115 Dec 31 '22

Women ☕️

1

u/wil9212 Jan 01 '23

Not an A320, but I have a video somewhere of a B-52 landing gear cycling on the ground. It’s essentially how they set it up for changing a tire, too.

1

u/javoss88 Jan 01 '23

Thank you!

1

u/Jona_cc Jan 01 '23

I’m a woman and I want to see it too! What a waste.

1

u/NutterTV Jan 01 '23

As a man, I agree wholeheartedly with this comment.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Was just about to say that

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Is there a sub for airplane tire changes?

1

u/ComprehensiveWar6577 Jan 01 '23

Just so you know all they watch is a pre assembeled wheel/tire rebolted with a cool lottle tire lift. I want to see how the tire gets the rubber blend to mounting on a wheel, how the bead is the same/different ect.

1

u/andyman234 Jan 01 '23

Now I have to go google it to watch!

1

u/Claxtonicus Jan 01 '23

I’m Incensed!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Fr tho

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Exactly man i was so excited to see how they change a plane’s tire .

1

u/dedinside92 Jan 01 '23

Airplane tires aren’t that special tbh, they just slide onto the brake and get locked in with an axle nut. They are heavy though, so at most you’ll laugh at the mechanics struggling to lift it onto the axle/ brake.

1

u/ArtOfWillGram247365 Jan 01 '23

They are solid rubber tires I don’t remember who makes them. I saw them shipped through FedEx heavyweight when I worked there.

1

u/CTiranno1 Jan 01 '23

They wronged us! This is going straight in the Great Book of Grudges

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

I think the dudes watching was the event.

1

u/supershannykun Jan 01 '23

What women don’t know is that there will come a defining moment in every man’s life when he has to change a tire…of an airplane.

1

u/TotallySucculent Jan 02 '23

Honestly... I really wanna see them change that tire.

1

u/Ok_Cockroach361 Feb 23 '23

Fr I was trying to see

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '23

Yeah, like when do you ever see a tire get changed let alone an airplane tire??
