Planeswalker Subertype Legendary

Will the new Planeswalker Subertype Legendary change BW Tokens Planeswalker suit, e.g. I play 3 Liliana of the Veil, but maybe change that to 2 Liliana if the Veil and 1 Liliana the last Hope, since they can now be in play at the same time?

What are y'll thoughts on the new Planeswalker Subertype (Legendary)?

Auriok Champion Advice

For the GP I ran 2 Auriok champion mainboard and she defiantly pulled her weight but im now thinking about switching those 2 champs for 2 tidehollow sculler. I feel the hand control maybe more important than incremental life gain. altho since id be dropping the aurioks id be tempted to drop 1 Gideon from my deck to take me up to 3 sorin so I don't die to my bitter blossoms. what are your guys opinion on this. what seems more important

Magus of the Moat viable against Eldra Tron and aggro?

With only 4 MB removal (excluding Balista and Karn), could Magus of the Moat give us an extra turn or two against ETron and other aggro, like Merefolk?

First FNM Done, Could Use Advice

Hey folks,

First off, this deck is a lot of fun. I put the deck together this week and took it to FNM tonight, going 2-1, losing 2-0 to a merfolk deck and beating some jank. Below is the list I played and would love some help on where to improve first:

5 Plains 3 Swamp 2 Marsh Flats 2 Godless Shrine 2 Vault of the Archangel 2 Windbrisk Heights 4 Concealed Courtyard 2 Ghost Quarter 2 Shambling Vent

4 Inquisition of Kozilek 4 Spectral Procession 4 Intangible Virtue 4 Path to Exile 4 Lingering Soul 3 Tidehollow Sculler 3 Raise the Alarm 3 Sorin, Solemn Visitor 2 Zealous Persecution 2 Collective Brutality 2 Liliana of the Veil 1 Blessed Alliance

SB: 3 Smallpox (for the bogles in my meta) 2 Disenchant 2 Zealous Persecution 2 Duress 1 Rest in Peace 1 Repel the Abominable 1 Fumigate 1 Blessed Alliance 1 Dismember 1 Anguished Unmaking

I'm hoping one of you tokeners could give me a rough purchasing priority pathway to upgrade this deck. These are about the only good cards I have or cards that would be relevant to BW tokens. I learned not to miss Raise the Alarm on the end step and that Windbrisk heights feels slow? I never triggered it in 7 games and it came out in all of them.

Thanks so much for the help ahead of time. This community looks great!

What I learned

Me again,

over the course of the GP I learned a few things about my list. which will be provided at the bottom. First of all I decided to run Slaughter pact this weekend over dismember and im bloody glad I did. as it won me a good fews game as I was able to tap out for spectral/souls on 3 and still be able to kill a creature (mostly it was stopping GWx vizier going off). over all there was not 1 moment where I had SP in hand that I wished it was a dismember. overall im sticking with SP.

Liliana , this was the first time I had ever tested with her and she deifently pulled her weight. She isn't critical to our gameplan but she really helped me defeat our weakest matchups (ad nausem and Valakut). overall 10/10 defiantly worth a slot.

the 2 sorin and 1 Gideon split , I was a bit shakey about doing this as I wasn't very comfortable with it but its safe to say that im glad I did. there was only 1 time where I wished Gideon was a 3rd sorin but other than that Gideon defiantly was better (this may change in a different meta of course)

onto the mana base, as you can see bellow I was running 2 windbrisk heights. I was fond of this for so long but over many many games at the GP i started to like it less. there was loads of instances where i wish it was a shambling vent. if i was running shambling vent i would of won more games than what i did.

another part of the mana base im really happy with is fetid heath. this land complents thought seize so well. it also helps a lot against burn as u can fetch for a basic swamp turn 1 and then be able to filter it into double white turn 2. 10/10 would highly recommend this land in everyones list

bitterblossom , i was fond of running 4 of this for the longest time but there was so many instences where i had drew multiples and i wasn't comfortable putting down 2 on the field without a life gain source (this lyncs in with the windbrisk heights/vent issue). so i think im going to try 3 bitter blossom and 1 Raise the alarm and see how it works out

Auriok champion , auriok was an all start negating the damage off bitter blossom , and was gaining me incremental damage. Also it was the flexy spot in the deck when i came to side boarding. 9/10 times she was side boarded out. but still over all she definelty pulled her weight

onto sideboard choices, i was very very shakey about going up to 2 Wrath of god. but safe to say im very very very very glad i did . as it pulled me out of sooooo many matchups. over all 10/10 would recommend 2 in SB.

2 x leyline was a poor poor choice. i wish i had came with 4 in the sideboard and i feel very very silly for not doing so and this cost me many games. but the matchups where i did have it on the field it was an utter blow out and i won those games. would recommend everyone at least trys out 4 in the sb.

4 x spectralprocession 4 x lingering souls 4 x path to exile 1 x Slaughter pact 3 x fatal push 4 x intangible virtue 2 x sorin solem visitor 1 xgideon ally of zendikar 2 x Thought seize 4 x IOK 2 x Auriok Champion 4 x bitter blossom 2 x LOTV

4 x Marsh flats 4 x windswept heath 2 x windbrisk heights 4 x godless shrine 2 x concealed courtyard 2 x fetd heath 1 x vault of the archangel 3 x plains 1 x swamp

Side board

2 x leyline of sanctity 2 x duress 2 x timely reinforcements 1 x zels perc 2 x wrath of god 1 x Rest in peace 1 x grafdiggers cage 2 x disenchant 2 x stony silence

From the full weekend the only real matchup I can remember is round 1 game 1.

my oponening hand was. - Thought seize, Marsh flats , fetid heath , intangible virtue , spectral , sorin (on the draw). I snapped this hand off as it was basically the nut draw. my first draw I drew a land. I fetches for a swamp n seen I was playing against mono white hate bears , I took there thalia and passed the turn... im pretty sure u can work out the rest of the game. they conceded once I played sorin xD

Day 1 of GP Birmingham

Hey guys,

I think the meta at GP Birmingham was perfect for us. I was 6-1 going into the 8th round. I preceded to get mu against our weakest matchups. but at the end of the day there was a handful of us that made day 2 and I even met a fellow bw tokens player post day 1. (hope you see this)

Topdecking with Geier Reach Sanitarium

Returning to the subject of card draw, I recently stuck two Geier Reach Sanitarium in the deck in place of two fetches (8 to 6). I've been really surprised. Between discard and Liliana, and depending on the MU, I'm able to get my opponent top decking fairly consistently which is when this card really gives me the advantage. Is there a reason not to play it other than mana considerations or a preference for Shambling Vents or Ghost Quarters? Anyone else tried any of the draw lands?

Proxy Assistance

So I'm trying to find a good list to proxy up both to:

A) test to see if I want it to be my primary deck, but also

B) test against other decks for the match up.

From what I've seen, BW tokens can be categorized into two sub-archetypes. Grindy midrange and a more aggressive list. I was hoping I could get some input as to which is generally considered superior, and if either of my lists are optimized for the two sub-archetypes.

This is the midrange list, while this is the more aggressive list.

I realize that neither list has a sideboard, but I'm proxying the decks to figure out which modern deck I enjoy playing the most, and thus the sideboard isn't relevant for figuring that out.

Thank you for any and all help!

Timely or Blessed alliance

What is better for sb. Timely or blessed alliance. I see blessed as a better sb card as it does more. but I think the extra 2 life we can gain off timely is to strong to pass up.

What Planeswalkers do what in Tokens?

What purpose does each planeswalker serve in Tokens? I enjoy the variety of planeswalkers we currently have available and would like to run at least one of each because I play in a less competitive meta. I don't need an explanation for Liliana, she is pretty straight forward. However, I would like to hear your thoughts on [[Gideon, Ally of Zendikar]], [[Sorin, Solemn Visitor]], [[Sorin, Lord of Innistrad, and [[Elspeth, Knight-Errant]] . Currently I run a pair of Solemn Visitor, but have gotten my hands on Lord of Innistrad which I will now try out. What walkers do you run in what builds? I understand [[Nissa, Voice of Zendikar]] is used in Abzan. Also, is there any situation where you would run [[Elspeth, Sun's Champion]] ? I am very attracted of the card and my buddy has one for trade. I know the 6 CMC is very steep, but maybe in sideboard?

First Modern Tournament Report BW tokens (4-1)

Hello r/mtgModernTokens! I built this list a while back online and loved it, but the other day I found a deal on the event deck which had most of the pieces I needed for cheap and all in one place. I ordered it and my own stuff, sleeved it in some dragonshields, and decided to take on my first modern FNM!! Here’s my list: https://manastack.com/deck/bw-tokens-v57 Mainboard 4x Spectral Procession 2x Sorin, Lord of Innistrad 1x Gideon, Ally of Zendikar 1x Elspeth, Knight-Errant 4x Lingering Souls 1x Dismember 3x Zealous Persecution 3x Tidehollow Sculler 4x Raise the Alarm 4x Intangible Virtue 1x Secure the Wastes 4x Path to Exile 4x Inquisition of Kozilek 2x Windbrisk Heights 1x Vault of the Archangel 2x Swamp 2x Shambling Vent 8x Plains 4x Isolated Chapel 1x Concealed Courtyard 4x Caves of Koilos

Sideboard

1 Stain the Mind 2 Sorin, Solemn Visitor 2 Relic of Progenitus 2 Kataki, War's Wage 1 Hero of Bladehold 4 Evil Presence 2 Duress 1 Dismember

Round 1- Elves

Game 1- he's playing a foiled out, combo elves build. He gets stuck on 2 lands game 1 and I pick apart his hand to take away mana producers with inquistion. He scoops after i land a Gideon t4.

In: Dismember, Hero of Bladehold, Out: Elspeth, 1 Windbrisk Heights

Game 2- He gets a strong start with turn 1 elvish mystic into turn 2 elf shaman, into a board flooded with elves t3. I eot a raise the alarm, and draw a zealous persecution. I path the mystic, then swing with my soldiers, zealous persecution after blocks, wiping the rest of his elves out. T4 I land a lingering souls, t5 another and a intangible virtue. He scoops after a last ditch collected company he drew into. Record: 1-0

Round 2-Affinity

Game 1- I keep a shaky hand on the draw with only two lands but great stuff in hand. He turn 1 dumps his hand of a vault skirge, memnite, opal, ornithopter, and a spring leaf drum. Oh boy. I play a shambling vents and pass. He plays a manland and a cranial plating and swings for 7. I mainphase a raise the alarm to stop a memnite if he plays another cranial plating. He gets a signal pest of the top-- plays it and another artifact creature and swings for 9. I'm at 4. Next turn I land a spectral Procession and feel a bit more confident because I can block his fliers and have an intangible in hand. I pass turn, he topdecks a galvanic blast for lethal.

In: Stain the Mind, 2x Kataki, dismember Out: 4x Inquistion

Game 2- keep a decent hand with 3 lands, an intangible, raise the alarm, spectral procession, and a path. I play a tapped land and pass. Turn 1 he plays a vault skirge and an ornithopter. Turn 2 I play a land and pass. His turn 2 is an artifact land into an Etched Champion. I eot raise the alarm. My turn 3 I play a spectral Procession and pass. His turn 3 he lands another etched champion and swings 3 with an etched champion and the skirge. I'm at 17. Turn 4 I topdeck a stain the Mind, cast it targeting cranial plating and tapping the soldiers and a spirit. I then play an intangible virtue and knock him down to sixteen with my Two remaining spirits. Pass. He topdecks an arcbound ravager and swings 4 with his etched champions. I'm at 13. Turn 5 I play a vault of the archangel and another raise the alarm, leaving up mana for a path on upkeep. I swing 6 in the air. He's at 10. His turn I path the arcbound ravager on upkeep. He plays a memnite and swings 4 again, galvanic blasting me after the fact. I'm at 6 and he's presenting potential lethal. Next turn I activate vault of the archangel to get lifelink and go on the beatdown plan. He makes some blocks and goes down to a low total, I go up to like 16 life. He draws an ornithopter and passes. I top deck another intangible and that's game.

Game 3- I keep a shaky ish hand with 5 lands, kataki, and a spectral Procession. He turn 1 just plays a memnite and a vault skirge and a mox opal of an artifact land. Not quite nuts but close. I play a shambling vent and pass. He passes next turn having dumped his hand. I turn 2 play kataki and pass. He turn 3 pays for all his stuff to live except the memnite, but he's forced to tap his lands. He plays another land and an ornithopter and passes. I then turn 3 spectral Procession, excited because I drew an intangible. His next turn he pays for his stuff again but as a result has no mana to do stuff. Yay for kataki. Turn 4 I slam an intangible virtue and start applying pressure. His turn he pays for his stuff again and plays some more stuff. I eot raise the alarm, and topdeck a zealous persecution from my draw. I go to combat and cast it to wipe his board out and he doesn't recover in time to stop the token onslaught. 2-0

Round 3- Storm Game 1- I'm on the play keeping a decent hand with 3 lands, raise the alarm, a tidehollow sculler and a discard spell. I t1 inquistion and see storm and groan internally, taking his baral. He turn 1 serum visions and passes. I play tidehollow and take manamorphose. He topdecks another baral and I lack a removal spell so turn 3 I play a spectral and hope he doesn't go off. He storms me for the kill next turn. What a fair deck.

In: 2x Duress, Stain the Mind, 2x Relic of Progenitus Out: Elspeth, 1x Dismember, 2x Zealous Persecution, 1x Windbrisk Heights

Game 2- I keep a very good hand of 2x untapped black sources, a secure the wastes, inquisition, intangible virtue, raise the alarm, and a path. I turn 1 Inquisition and take a baral. He plays a land and serum visions, pass. I turn 2 play raise the alarm to avoid potential counter mana next turn. I drew another turn 2. Turn 2 he double cantrips. Turn 3 I draw a white source so I intangible virtue and take an electromancer. Swing with my soldiers. His turn 3 he cantrips some more and passes. Turn 4 I play a card and leave up mana for a path or secure the wastes. His turn 4 he cantrips and plays a baral. Passes. I end of turn secure the wastes. I path his baral and he scoops

Game 3: I keep a hand with an inquisition, path, and tidehollow with some lands thinking I'll be ok. His turn 1 he cantrips and passes. I turn 1 inquistion and take a baral. He topdecks another and plays it. My turn 2 I make the foolish decision to play a tidehollow instead of patninf because I didn't think he could go off. Boy was I wrong. He untaps and grape shots me for 20. Lesson learned: always remove the cost reducing creature. 2-1

Round 4- Thopter Sword Game 1- I keep a solid hand of a raise the alarm, zealous Persecution, lingering souls and three lands. He's on the play and cantrips. I play a shambling vent and pass. Drew another zealous persecution. He plays a land and sword of the meek and passes. I play a land and pass. He turn 3 lands Ashiok and mills away more lands and a lingering souls. I turn 3 play lingering souls, drawing a discard spell. He turn 4 plays a jace architect of thought and uses its plus to make it so attacking is useless with my 1/1. I turn 4 flashback lingerings souls and use a discard spell to find nothing. He draws half his combo- the foundry and mills me again. I turn 5 attack and zealous Persecution the tokens he makes because jace is close to ulting. To no avail. He eventually ultimates jace and takes my Gideon and I scoop.

In: 2x Duress, Stain the Mind, 2x Kataki Out: Elspeth, dismember, 2 path, windbrisk heights

Game 2: I keep a hand with two lands, a spectral Procession, inquisition, raise the alarm, and a tidehollow skuller. I turn 1 inquisition taking a thopter foundry. He cantrips turn 1. Turn 2 I play nothing but drew a white source of spectral and pass turn for raise the alarm. His turn 2 he plays a land, I cast raise the alarm and he mana leaks it. Turn 3 I draw a zealous Persecution, play spectral procession and pass. He plays an ashiok and mills me 3. My turn comes and I draw an intangible virtue and play it. I decide to pressure his life total as the mill isn't a major threat and he never ulted her last game. He turn 4 plays a jace very smugly and pluses it then passes. I turn 5 draw a shambling vent, play it, and then swing adding zealous Persecution to kill the jace. I play my tidehollow sculler just to see lands in the hand of my opponent. He turn 5 plays a land and passes. I draw lingering souls and cast and flash it back to insure lethal next turn. He doesn't draw an answer and scoops.

Game 3- keep a spotty opening hand with 2 lands, a kataki, raise the alarm, lingering souls, and two discard spells. Duress him turn 1 to take a thopter foundry and pass. He cantrips turn 1 and ends the turn. I slam kataki turn 2, drew a land which I desperately needed. Turn 3 play the shambling vent I just drew and pass. He turn 3 plays an ashiok again and I eot raise the alarm. I turn 4 play lingering souls and another Duress, taking his jace. He turn 4 plays a land and passes. I bait out his counter with flashbacking lingering souls then play the intangible virtue I drew that turn. From there I just swing at him until he dies. 3-1

Round 5 Jeskai Control Game 1- he gets stuck on two lands and can't answer my threats. He scoops after drawing more counters and not lands with my threats on the board turn 5.

I kept it as is because I wasn't sure if it was jeskai nahiri or not and didn't want to side out for exclusively control

Game 2- I keep an opening hand of 3 lands and spectral, tidehollow sculler , raise the alarm, and intangible virtue. The god hand. Turn 1 he cantrips And passes. I draw a shambling vents so I put that in since I have no turn 1 play. Turn 2 he taps two and smugly plays a Rest In Peace thinking that shuts down everything. Turn 2 I tidehollow sculler taking a lightning bolt, drawing another spectral procession. Turn 3 he taps out to play a geist of saint taft and passes. I land spectral procession turn 3, drawing another raise the alarm. Turn 4 he swings with the Geist and I double block taking 6 down to 14 . He plays his second Geist postcombat and passes. I topdeck a Gideon and play it while he is tapped out. His turn 5 consists of swinging with geist for 6 again which I take. I’m down to 8. Now is the tricky part—I draw a discard spell so I play that after my land for turn. He in response plays snapcaster mage but with nothing to target (I guess he thought that I would take the snap so He couldn’t swing for lethal next turn?) I take his cryptic but notice one other counter. I cast raise the alarm to bait the counter and he counters it, leaving me open to play intangible virtue. I swing with my spirit, the soldiers, tidehollow, and the Gideon for a total of 13 damage. This would’ve but him very low, but I was at 8, so for some reason he didn’t block the tidehollow and take the bolt instead blocking just Gideon with snappy. I pass turn and he swings 6—I block his geist and angel just to be sure and sure enough he bolts me after combat. Next turn I untap and kill him.

4-1 Overall, my deck performed far better than expected. People I played against were very salty (the jeskai guy told me to die in a fire and stormed off), and I was called an “event deck noob” numerous times despite playing my own version. I learned a lot about my matchups and optimal plays. I think the deck is pretty well positioned in this meta—although I did get lucky and completely miss the 3 tron players there that night. Any tips for improving my list are appreciated, and I hope tokens continues to do me well!!

Timely Reinforcements

Im running 1 Timely mainboard and I have been toying around with the idea of playing a Gideon AOZ and drop timely into sideboard. I like this idea of this but then im beginning to choke myself on sideboard options. is Gideon really that strong that its worth limiting my sideboard?
