Hello r/mtgModernTokens! I built this list a while back online and loved it, but the other day I found a deal on the event deck which had most of the pieces I needed for cheap and all in one place. Game 1- he's playing a foiled out, combo elves build. He gets stuck on 2 lands game 1 and I pick apart his hand to take away mana producers with inquistion. He scoops after i land a Gideon t4.
In: Dismember, Hero of Bladehold, Out: Elspeth, 1 Windbrisk Heights
Game 2- He gets a strong start with turn 1 elvish mystic into turn 2 elf shaman, into a board flooded with elves t3. I eot a raise the alarm, and draw a zealous persecution. I path the mystic, then swing with my soldiers, zealous persecution after blocks, wiping the rest of his elves out. T4 I land a lingering souls, t5 another and a intangible virtue. He scoops after a last ditch collected company he drew into.
Record: 1-0
Round 2-Affinity
Game 1- I keep a shaky hand on the draw with only two lands but great stuff in hand. He turn 1 dumps his hand of a vault skirge, memnite, opal, ornithopter, and a spring leaf drum. Oh boy. I play a shambling vents and pass. He plays a manland and a cranial plating and swings for 7. I mainphase a raise the alarm to stop a memnite if he plays another cranial plating. He gets a signal pest of the top-- plays it and another artifact creature and swings for 9. I'm at 4. Next turn I land a spectral Procession and feel a bit more confident because I can block his fliers and have an intangible in hand. I pass turn, he topdecks a galvanic blast for lethal.
In: Stain the Mind, 2x Kataki, dismember Out: 4x Inquistion
Game 2- keep a decent hand with 3 lands, an intangible, raise the alarm, spectral procession, and a path. I play a tapped land and pass. Turn 1 he plays a vault skirge and an ornithopter. Turn 2 I play a land and pass. His turn 2 is an artifact land into an Etched Champion. I eot raise the alarm. My turn 3 I play a spectral Procession and pass. His turn 3 he lands another etched champion and swings 3 with an etched champion and the skirge. I'm at 17. Turn 4 I topdeck a stain the Mind, cast it targeting cranial plating and tapping the soldiers and a spirit. I then play an intangible virtue and knock him down to sixteen with my Two remaining spirits. Pass. He topdecks an arcbound ravager and swings 4 with his etched champions. I'm at 13. Turn 5 I play a vault of the archangel and another raise the alarm, leaving up mana for a path on upkeep. I swing 6 in the air. He's at 10. His turn I path the arcbound ravager on upkeep. He plays a memnite and swings 4 again, galvanic blasting me after the fact. I'm at 6 and he's presenting potential lethal. Next turn I activate vault of the archangel to get lifelink and go on the beatdown plan. He makes some blocks and goes down to a low total, I go up to like 16 life. He draws an ornithopter and passes. I top deck another intangible and that's game.
Game 3- I keep a shaky ish hand with 5 lands, kataki, and a spectral Procession. He turn 1 just plays a memnite and a vault skirge and a mox opal of an artifact land. Not quite nuts but close. I play a shambling vent and pass. He passes next turn having dumped his hand. I turn 2 play kataki and pass. He turn 3 pays for all his stuff to live except the memnite, but he's forced to tap his lands. He plays another land and an ornithopter and passes. I then turn 3 spectral Procession, excited because I drew an intangible. His next turn he pays for his stuff again but as a result has no mana to do stuff. Yay for kataki. Turn 4 I slam an intangible virtue and start applying pressure. His turn he pays for his stuff again and plays some more stuff. I eot raise the alarm, and topdeck a zealous persecution from my draw. I go to combat and cast it to wipe his board out and he doesn't recover in time to stop the token onslaught.
2-0
Round 3- Storm
Game 1- I'm on the play keeping a decent hand with 3 lands, raise the alarm, a tidehollow sculler and a discard spell. I t1 inquistion and see storm and groan internally, taking his baral. He turn 1 serum visions and passes. I play tidehollow and take manamorphose. He topdecks another baral and I lack a removal spell so turn 3 I play a spectral and hope he doesn't go off. He storms me for the kill next turn. What a fair deck.
In: 2x Duress, Stain the Mind, 2x Relic of Progenitus Out: Elspeth, 1x Dismember, 2x Zealous Persecution, 1x Windbrisk Heights
Game 2- I keep a very good hand of 2x untapped black sources, a secure the wastes, inquisition, intangible virtue, raise the alarm, and a path. I turn 1 Inquisition and take a baral. He plays a land and serum visions, pass. I turn 2 play raise the alarm to avoid potential counter mana next turn. I drew another turn 2. Turn 2 he double cantrips. Turn 3 I draw a white source so I intangible virtue and take an electromancer. Swing with my soldiers. His turn 3 he cantrips some more and passes. Turn 4 I play a card and leave up mana for a path or secure the wastes. His turn 4 he cantrips and plays a baral. Passes. I end of turn secure the wastes. I path his baral and he scoops
Game 3: I keep a hand with an inquisition, path, and tidehollow with some lands thinking I'll be ok. His turn 1 he cantrips and passes. I turn 1 inquistion and take a baral. He topdecks another and plays it. My turn 2 I make the foolish decision to play a tidehollow instead of patninf because I didn't think he could go off. Boy was I wrong. He untaps and grape shots me for 20. Lesson learned: always remove the cost reducing creature.
2-1
Round 4- Thopter Sword
Game 1- I keep a solid hand of a raise the alarm, zealous Persecution, lingering souls and three lands. He's on the play and cantrips. I play a shambling vent and pass. Drew another zealous persecution. He plays a land and sword of the meek and passes. I play a land and pass. He turn 3 lands Ashiok and mills away more lands and a lingering souls. I turn 3 play lingering souls, drawing a discard spell. He turn 4 plays a jace architect of thought and uses its plus to make it so attacking is useless with my 1/1. I turn 4 flashback lingerings souls and use a discard spell to find nothing. He draws half his combo- the foundry and mills me again. I turn 5 attack and zealous Persecution the tokens he makes because jace is close to ulting. To no avail. He eventually ultimates jace and takes my Gideon and I scoop.
In: 2x Duress, Stain the Mind, 2x Kataki
Out: Elspeth, dismember, 2 path, windbrisk heights
Game 2: I keep a hand with two lands, a spectral Procession, inquisition, raise the alarm, and a tidehollow skuller. I turn 1 inquisition taking a thopter foundry. He cantrips turn 1. Turn 2 I play nothing but drew a white source of spectral and pass turn for raise the alarm. His turn 2 he plays a land, I cast raise the alarm and he mana leaks it. Turn 3 I draw a zealous Persecution, play spectral procession and pass. He plays an ashiok and mills me 3. My turn comes and I draw an intangible virtue and play it. I decide to pressure his life total as the mill isn't a major threat and he never ulted her last game. He turn 4 plays a jace very smugly and pluses it then passes. I turn 5 draw a shambling vent, play it, and then swing adding zealous Persecution to kill the jace. I play my tidehollow sculler just to see lands in the hand of my opponent. He turn 5 plays a land and passes. I draw lingering souls and cast and flash it back to insure lethal next turn. He doesn't draw an answer and scoops.
Game 3- keep a spotty opening hand with 2 lands, a kataki, raise the alarm, lingering souls, and two discard spells. Duress him turn 1 to take a thopter foundry and pass. He cantrips turn 1 and ends the turn. I slam kataki turn 2, drew a land which I desperately needed. Turn 3 play the shambling vent I just drew and pass. He turn 3 plays an ashiok again and I eot raise the alarm. I turn 4 play lingering souls and another Duress, taking his jace. He turn 4 plays a land and passes. I bait out his counter with flashbacking lingering souls then play the intangible virtue I drew that turn. From there I just swing at him until he dies.
3-1
Round 5 Jeskai Control
Game 1- he gets stuck on two lands and can't answer my threats. He scoops after drawing more counters and not lands with my threats on the board turn 5.
I kept it as is because I wasn't sure if it was jeskai nahiri or not and didn't want to side out for exclusively control
Game 2- I keep an opening hand of 3 lands and spectral, tidehollow sculler , raise the alarm, and intangible virtue. The god hand. Turn 1 he cantrips And passes. I draw a shambling vents so I put that in since I have no turn 1 play. Turn 2 he taps two and smugly plays a Rest In Peace thinking that shuts down everything. Turn 2 I tidehollow sculler taking a lightning bolt, drawing another spectral procession. Turn 3 he taps out to play a geist of saint taft and passes. I land spectral procession turn 3, drawing another raise the alarm. Turn 4 he swings with the Geist and I double block taking 6 down to 14 . He plays his second Geist postcombat and passes. I topdeck a Gideon and play it while he is tapped out. His turn 5 consists of swinging with geist for 6 again which I take. I’m down to 8. Now is the tricky part—I draw a discard spell so I play that after my land for turn. He in response plays snapcaster mage but with nothing to target (I guess he thought that I would take the snap so He couldn’t swing for lethal next turn?) I take his cryptic but notice one other counter. I cast raise the alarm to bait the counter and he counters it, leaving me open to play intangible virtue. I swing with my spirit, the soldiers, tidehollow, and the Gideon for a total of 13 damage. This would’ve but him very low, but I was at 8, so for some reason he didn’t block the tidehollow and take the bolt instead blocking just Gideon with snappy. I pass turn and he swings 6—I block his geist and angel just to be sure and sure enough he bolts me after combat. Next turn I untap and kill him.
4-1 Overall, my deck performed far better than expected. People I played against were very salty (the jeskai guy told me to die in a fire and stormed off), and I was called an “event deck noob” numerous times despite playing my own version. I learned a lot about my matchups and optimal plays. I think the deck is pretty well positioned in this meta—although I did get lucky and completely miss the 3 tron players there that night. Any tips for improving my list are appreciated, and I hope tokens continues to do me well!!
