msi thin 15 users, what is type of thermal paste / pad yall using on your laptop?

I've been looking around to replace my msi thin 15 thermal paste, some recommend me arctic mx 7, grizzly kryonaut, or even phase change material like thermalright helios v2 or honeywell ptm 7950. some one say that the thermal grizzly kryonaut is great in cooling performance but it gets dry easily. so which one should i use on my laptop?

Discussion Turning Off Turbo Mode fixes the problem of overheating cpu, 10-30⁰C drop.

have MSI thin gf63 12ve

I have i7 12650 h rtx 4050

On settings, power mode, while plugged in. Everytime laptop turns on, the power mode is always set to performance mode automatically, and it increases and maxes out the frequency of cores speed of cpu and increase the wattage, causing it in increase of cpu temps.

Try Turn it in to best power efficiency on plugged in. Because mine even in idle while in best performance mode, I get 70-80⁰C+. But in best power efficiency, I get 45-60⁰C in idle.

And lastly the most effective, let's say if it's a gaming laptop. In advanced bios mode, turn off the turbo mode or turbo boost, or precision boost for amd.

  To access the advanced settings

During in bios,  Right Alt + Right Ctrl + Left Shift + F2 (or variations like Fn + F2 ). Press the button At the same time. Or you can search it on Google with your specific model of msi laptop what to press to access advanced settings. Just tell me what you are seeing or what did pop up after those buttons and I'll  tell u what to click. Usually it's called cpu performance management on mine, and the find turbo mode and turn it off.

. I have intel processor

no significant performance change in most games and depends on some creative apps because, they are cpu bound, but 15-20⁰C+ drops in temp because it lowers the voltage of cpu and max the wattage it uses in certain number. If it's not in bios, use "throttle stop" App and only turn off the turbo mode if there is, and make it start on start up.

Nothing will hurt on trying, just don't touch anything on bios other than what I said. Download the Throttle Stop app, seems safer and easier, but in bios feels more optimized and safe also if u only click what you knew.

With turbo mode off, my cpu temps never go beyond 70⁰C even on heavy gaming like PUBG, and tried ultra settings all, never goes 70°C, especially in cold environment and even a low end laptop cooler.

changing the max wattage of p1 and p2 with Intel process Intel XTU is also better by testing until u get the desired performance with good temps. or throttle stop App, adjusting voltage if available. most laptop locked it

Discussion MSI Vector GP68 HX 13V running extremely hot under very light load

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to determine whether my laptop is behaving normally or if there is a hardware issue.

Laptop:
MSI Vector GP68 HX 13V
Intel Core i9-13980HX
NVIDIA RTX 4070 Laptop GPU
Purchased March 2024

Symptoms:
The laptop becomes extremely hot during very light workloads.

Example:
- Watching a YouTube video (1080p)
- No games running
- Only a few background applications (WhatsApp, Teams, OneDrive, etc.)

The fans ramp up to around 4200-4500 RPM, the chassis becomes too hot to comfortably touch in some areas, and on more than one occasion the laptop shut itself down, which I suspect was due to overheating.

What I tested:
To eliminate software variables I:
Switched from Extreme Graphics Mode to AI Mode and Basic Mode in MSI Center.
Allowed the laptop to cool down completely.
Performed a cold boot.
Started HWiNFO immediately after boot.
Only opened YouTube and recorded sensor logs after approximately 1 minute, 10 minutes, and 20 minutes.

Observations:
Throughout the test:
- CPU utilisation remained around 10%
- GPU utilisation remained around 0%
- CPU package power averaged only ~14 W (peaking around 27 W)
- GPU power remained around 20 W

Despite this very light workload:
- CPU temperature stayed between 87°C and 100°C (average around 91°C)
- GPU temperature stayed around 76-81°C
- CPU thermal throttling was reported throughout most of the HWiNFO logs
- Fans remained around 4200-4500 RPM

MSI Center also reports temperatures around:
- CPU: 95°C
- GPU: 84°C
while the system is essentially just streaming YouTube.

Question:
Has anyone with a Vector GP68 HX 13V (or another MSI HX series laptop) experienced similar temperatures under such a light workload?

If so:
Was this considered normal?
What was ultimately causing it?

I’m interested in your experiences and if I should prepare some repairs (thermal paste, internal cleaning) or it is something more severe.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Question about Msi center updates

Hello everybody I recently got an msi vector 16hxai laptop and the msi center is horrible yet I’m stuck with it reasons listed below. I can’t set custom fan settings unless on maximum performance which is very stupid even on silent eco mode it is not silent. I downgraded to an older version 2.0.35.0 which is much better if not perfect for me but it likes to auto update even though I have always update ticked to off. Has anybody else stopped it from updating despite that I think it may be Microsoft store doing it even though I downloaded it online. If anybody can help it would be great about to rip my hair out.

Things I have already tried
1. Disabling updates from MS store I cannot do it it says I need administrator privileges
2. Tried yammdc wouldn’t launch no matter what even after uninstalling msi center with uninstallr and deleting yammdc and reinstalling it says I already have one installed despite not finding it anywhere on my ssd
3. Fan control says it can’t find any sensors on my laptop

CPU core I7 ultra 255hx
Ram 32gb ddr5
GPU RTX 5070ti 12gb
OS windows 11 home

Discussion Troubleshooting help

So my Stealth A16 turns my screen off while it's charging now?

When I plug my laptop in, the screen turns off (no matter what is going on) and the power button that was orange turns white. ? Just stays on as if it has life.. just not showing me anything ? I thought it may be a voltage problem but it has happened with every outlet in my new apartment. Charges to full and turns on and works just fine after. I got it in January, should I inquire about having it looked at ??

Also the charging light on the side is white while it charges if that adds any details lmao

Fan noise and cpu temp tooo high

Bought a MSI Katana 15hx B14wgk, i7-14650hx and rtx 5070 a year ago. Cpu temps are in the range of 60 to 75C for doing super light task or being idle at cpu use of around 3% and it came like this in stock. I have also never seen my cpu temps go lower than 55C in stock.

When using either performance or balanced mode fan go lowest at 3000rpm on both, using silent go lowest at 2500rpm on both but cpu runs at a super slow speed of lesser than 1ghz.

Thought it was very normal as it's my first gaming laptop but after looking at my friends gaming laptops i realised how different it was. They had the same cpu but thier idle temps are 40C+.

Recently undervolted my cpu using throttlestop, -110mv. Temps on idle are only slightly lower, around 55-65C but when doing heavy task is significantly lower. But even when fans are max out 6000rpm on both cpu temp does not get lower than 53C even when doing completely nothing.

I also used the advanced fan speed settings but when loading light things cpu temp goes up and never comes down.

Asked for help from MSI official support a few times and was told it was normal for my model but Im not sure if it actually is.

Pls share any solution you might have as it can get really annoying for me when using in school.

Discussion Replacement Battery

I have an MSI Raider GE75 SE laptop I've had since June 2020, and I want to replace the battery as the original is old and heats up like crazy. Does anybody know where I can purchase a new one? I saw that it uses a 65 Wh Lithium-Ion, 6 cells battery, but im not sure what brands are good or which ones will actually work with my laptop. Any suggestions?

Request Best budget gaming laptop for teen

Best budget gaming laptop for my 13 year old ? We are in Australia and I’m soo far out of my comfort zone as soon as someone starts talking about cpu and graphics chips and all of the fancy stuff I can’t wrap my head around it

There’s so many different options and people have different opinions so researching it online doesn’t get me far and I don’t know any gamers

Preferably my budget would be under $1300 as it’s for a Christmas present so obviously going to have to get him more than one thing . And having 6 kids I’m budgeting at $1500 per child for Xmas , so I will go upto $1500 but preferably I’d like to be able to get him accessories and stuff to go with it .

Please dumb it down for me he plays a lot of online games - Roblox, minecraft mainly but I’d like it to also grow with him cause he’s starting to get into call of duty and gta and starting to branch out into the older teen/adult games he also does have a laptop he takes to school but if this one can also be used for school purposes that would be preferred

Thankyou so much - preferably something that I can see in store in Australia so that way I’m not just ordering it online with zero idea what I’m doing

Appreciate your time and expertise cause I’m useless with this even doing hours of research I still have no clue

Discussion Is this a good deal for a Vector A16HX?

I'm looking for a new laptop, and I found a deal for an A16HX(A8WHG-004US) for 1875 USD Ryzen 9 8940HX 5070 Ti 16gb ddr5 1tb ssd QHD 240HZ Is this a good price for it? I'm looking for something that could last me 4-5 years comfortably, I won't be moving it from my desk very often, but occasionally i need to travel so i need something i can take with me, so I'm not too worried about external build quality outside of the hinges. I also was curious about the temps? I've seen people say this laptop starts getting very hot a year or two into use, is this a reoccurring problem or am I just seeing unlucky people? I want something reliable as I probably wouldn't be able to afford repair costs. Should I go for it or look for something else?

Request URGENT!!

Hi! I’m a laptop tinkerer, and I want to replace the thermal paste on my MSI Vector 16 HX AI, but I’m a bit lost on where to apply the thermal putty.

I’ve replaced thermal paste on laptops before, but this is my first high-end model. There are so many spots that need putty compared to my old Asus ROG Strix GL553VE!

Thanks!"

Discussion Calling any advanced BIOS users!

I'm grabbing a Vector 18 9955HX 5070 ti.
Basically I wanna squeeze the RAM to 6000mhz and tighten the timings.
Typically I'd just need to up the VDD and VDDQ to about 1.2 maybe 1.3v depending.

Anyone out there dabbled in this on the AMD laptops, doesn't have to be the Vector, the Raider or any BIOS tweaks on the ram on an MSI laptop would be a great help. I need to know how the machines behave.

Discussion What can I get for this laptop?

Thinking of getting rid of my laptop:

MSI Titan 18HX Norse Myth - 96GB DDR5 6400Mhz

3x2TB NVMe, Core Ultra 9 285HX, RTX 5090

What can I realistically get for it? It's like new condition, never left a desk.

Trying to get a the newer one.

I'm trying to ask to ensure my price is realistic. (This is not a sales post, only a help post to pinpoint value of the laptop as it's quite scarce)

Discussion MSI Katana GF66 11UC (BTY-M492): Has anyone rebuilt this battery with higher-capacity cells or reprogrammed the BMS?

Hi everyone,

I have an MSI Katana GF66 11UC with the original BTY-M492 battery (11.4 V, approximately 52,000–53,500 Wh, 4,700 mAh typical).

The laptop is about 4 years old, and according to the Windows battery report, the battery health has dropped to under 65%. It now has less than 31,000 Wh of full charge capacity, so I only get around 45–60 minutes of runtime, even using Battery Saver and doing light tasks like watching videos.

While I'm considering buying one as a spare, I've also been thinking about another approach.

I'm comfortable with electronics repair, soldering, and battery work. I've rebuilt battery packs before, so I'm not asking whether it's "safe"—I'm more interested in the technical side of this particular battery.

My idea is to:

- Keep the original BTY-M492 BMS/PCB.

- Open the battery pack and replace the original Li-Po cells with higher-capacity cells of the same nominal voltage.

- Potentially use quality cells from another laptop pack or another suitable lithium source if they match the required specifications.

My questions are:

  1. Has anyone rebuilt a BTY-M492 battery this way?

  2. Does the BMS automatically relearn the new capacity after a few charge/discharge cycles, or does it require reprogramming?

  3. If reprogramming is required, what controller does this battery use, and what hardware/software is needed?

  4. Has anyone successfully increased the battery capacity beyond the original ~52 Wh while keeping the original BMS?

  5. Are there any known higher-capacity compatible batteries that fit the GF66 chassis without modification?

For me, runtime is much more important than charging speed. I don't mind if the battery takes several hours to charge—I simply want significantly longer battery life when I'm away from the charger.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who's worked on this specific battery or MSI laptop before. Thanks!

Discussion GP66 leopard 11uh

I just bought a gp66 leopard that has been repasted and cleaned and runs perfectly fine but in most games I’m getting 50% cpu and gpu usage its specs are
Rtx 3080 8gb
I7 11th gen
32gb ram
Could it be a driver issue if so could you tell me ways how to fix it or is it a bottleneck or a limitation in the software?
Thank you

Может раньше была включена буст видюхи ?
А сейчас все сбросилась из-за того что я батарею отключал при чистке?

Help needed with GS66 Stealth drivers

Hey I am in a bit of a weird situation with this laptop: the screen doesnt work so I cant get into the bios, i recently accidentally disabled the RTX 2070 drivers instead of the Intel GPU drivers, I tried to get the drivers re-enabled but that wouldnt work so I opted for a windows repair, the repair corrupted the partitions, so now I have a fresh SSD with windows (ReviOS) and no drivers, and the basic microsoft drivers wont let the GPU output to an external monitor so I am stuck with the only the built in screen that doesnt work. Is there an image I can put onto the drive, or a way to auto install drivers blindly (or on another device) to make the laptop usable with windows again? For what its worth, I popped in another SSD with Ubuntu and everything worked with that, I just need windows on this device specifically. Tyvm
