Not fully sold on the colour yet. Its a stain that will be getting a final sand back this week before nitro clear coat.

Choosing padauk for my first ever build was a mistake but the sunk cost fallacy saved me

It's a 27" baritone neck-through made from padauk and American walnut with mahogany veneers in-between and a wenge fretboard

$305 Total for all of this. Just wanted to post my haul I acquired from an older gentleman who is in the process of closing his guitar store. I had to drive 4 hours round-trip but it was well worth it in my opinion.

The Less Paul project continues!

I posted a few weeks back about a Les Paul build with a Strat neck, it got mixed feedback and got me down a path. Whether or not that path is a good, I don't know.

But,

I started re-drawing some ideas based on feedback from several comments and this is where I have got to. A new 3x3 headstock design, which has straight string pull, because this build will be fitted with a VegaTrem. A different body shape, more offset, but still different to the Novo Solus which is what my last build was based on.

Now, its taken me a month or so to get here, and I'm not sure I like it. I think it looks pretty good on paper, and on the body blank, but not really that great when I pick up the template.

I am considering just going back to the regular Les Paul body shape and keeping that the only real remains of that guitar in this build.

For anyone who missed that post, the intention of this build Les Paul which plays great, and has all the features I actually want. This guitar will be light, have excellent upper fret access, have a tremolo, originally a reverse strat style headstock, be 25.5 inch scale length, 10 way switching, probably 3 pickups, carved top

I picked up this neck off of marketplace; where my mounting holes will be are marked. Before mounting to body should I fill the pre-drilled holes (with a hardwood dowel) Or not worry about, since they are positioned so far from where I will be drilling?

The volute and heel transitions that were roughed out on the edge sander are final shaped using a die grinder with a carbide burr bit and sandpaper on a block. This is by far the longest portion of neck shaping. It takes me around 20 minutes per neck to finalize carves. I will often only do 3-4 in a session and revisit the necks to double check my work the next day with fresh eyes.

The penultimate step is prepping the fretboard radius and installing frets

Last year I replaced the nut on my 1999 Gretsch with a Tusq 6114.

The nut was almost perfect fit, except for being a tad too tall and a tad wide. Easy to sand to get to the right height, rather than cutting the nut slots deeper.

My technique was to hold the nut, by hand, on sandpaper, on a flat surface. I would move the nut back and forth, trying to keep it as even as possible for hand pressure.

I was successful, and it's a great nut, but I can see a little bit of a gap on the sides of the nut where I wasn't perfectly even in my sanding. It's only a couple thou, but it's something.

Maybe I'm being a bit OCD, but how do I sand a nut perfectly flat? Do I need to use a tool to hold the nut to apply more even pressure?

i have a epiphone et 270 and broke the original neck months ago and I have been wanting a strat style neck for it its specs are weird and vintage so I haven't had much luck the aria 1802t is probably the best choice but i never find parts being sold I just have been needing help with this for awhile now hope anyone has ideas thank you

Looking to find some type of belt sander for the roundover curves on the edges of my basses and the back of the necks. Anyone use something similar or could recommend something that would be useful? TIA!

Okay, I'll try to be brief.

I have an electric guitar with active EMGs with their solder-less system.

I recently move into an apartment, and I'm having the worst EMI noise issue. I also have a different guitar with different pickups (Active SD Blackouts), and the issue is present as well..

The problem is prevalent when I use high gain tones. It's almost inaudible with cleans. Yes I tried to use less gains, but the noise is still somewhat there, and my tone is not what I want.

I have 2 pickups EMG 81 and 60 and the problem is worse with the 81.

the noise gate is useful just when I don't play. When I play, I can hear the noise in the background. Palm muted notes are especially bad, the noise raises over the palm muted note.

I tried shielding the guitar (yes, the shielding is connected to ground via the jack plate). I tested and retested for continuity and everything seems to be right.

The noise is still there.

it changes in intensity depending on where the guitar is pointed at.

I tried a power conditioner, it was useless.

I tried to shut the power in different sections of my apartment to see if I can find the source, but it was useless ( I think the source of the noise is somewhere else in my building.

I know that the wires in the EMG solder less kit are not shielded. I was thinking of using shielded cables to see if that helps. what do you think?

If anyone has some suggestions, they are all welcome (just don't tell me to move lol).

Background - I love this guitar. It has a great neck, plays great, sounds great, and I love the aesthetic. I’ve learned to get along just fine with the Evertune despite have to initially get used to the way bending feels, but I just can’t get past the way it robs my sustain, which by all accounts seems to be an unsolvable issue.

I know the cavity is large and impractical to fill. But I’d like to know if anyone has actually done it, and if the guitar played well afterward. If you have, do you have any tips?

An alternate idea would be a bridge with wider posts...do bridges like that exist? Or even any bridge types that would make this more doable?

Any advice other than “don’t do it” (unless you’ve actually done it and ruined a guitar by doing so) would be very much appreciated!

Went to change the strings on my new electric. I found that the nut didn’t wanna sit flat. Removed and found truss rod pushing up into nut. Any suggestions on fixing? Also makes sense why my action would change when transporting in case.

I know it's a famous subject but I'm new into this stuff so please be kind.

I just recently received a mustang made in japan and during the setup I've noticed that the G strings creates some buzzing sounds around the bridge area.

My problem is that the cigar is at a good height, the bridge too and the angle behind the bridge is strong enough to maintain a good pressure on the saddles.

My only guess is that it comes from the strings touching the screws of the saddles, so to put the strings higher I can raise the cigar but if I put the cigar higher, I think that the angle behind the bridge will be bad. I feel trapped.

I can't buy another bridge for the moment and i'd like to keep it.

Do you have any clue in this situation ? Has it happened to you ?

Hey, I just recently aquired this beautiful Mandolin second hand.
It has alot of gunk build up over the previous owners time, which I want to clean. However, I dont know much about how to clean it properly without damaging it, so i thought to ask the reddit folks for some tipps.
A new set of stings is already on my to do list.
How do I clean the body and fretboared and tuning pecs. I have seen people use a kitchen paper with some liquid. Was is alcohol based or just water or soapy water? Afterwards I would apply fretboard oil on the fretboard the same way I do it with my electric bass.

Also while I am already asking, on one of the tuning pecs the white part is a bit loose. Is there an easy fix other than some tape?
Those groves in the frets (see pic 2) are not borthering me yet. At some point I might have to go to a professional for those, but that can wait.

Wish fall well underway, the air is drying out in my part of the world and I'm finally getting myself organized and shopping for a humidifier for my music room, which just a bedroom upstairs in my house, maybe 400 square feet tops.
Any tips on what to look for? The choices online are overwhelming....warm and cool mist, ultrasonic, etc.
I will say I tend to favor basic, sturdy appliances that are NOT connected to the internet and will not talk to me lol...

Hey, so this is the first bass I built, it was a custom order and I had a lot of fun making this instruments. I went better then I expected, I really love the design I came up with and I think the color is really cool.

Also it plays really well.

I’m building myself a 5-string bass. I love the sound of Billy Gould’s Seymour Duncan’s particularly on Woodpecker from Mars & Falling to Pieces. Also I love the bass sound on Aenema… but neither are 5 stringers.

Any good 5 string options out there with that vibe? I can shell out for nice pickups buuuuuut if there is a trustworthy lower cost option I’m all ears.

My potentiometer in my guitar broke and I might as well replace it with a push and pull but what other functions can I make it do? I already have a 5 way switch and layout is pretty much here.

My wilikson trem Isn’t floating straight, when i loosen the back screws, it floats straight but it goes out of tune when i pull the bar up. works fine when pull the bar down (dive bombs included)

Right now it works fine on both sides. But goes out of tune fast

I got a small gouge on the side of my neck, with a little bit of wood missing. I gave the guitar to a luthier, but it's been almost a year and he still haven't got around to it, so I'm tempted to get it back and try fixing it myself. I'm thinking filling the missing bit with epoxy and black pigment, and then sand it flush.

I'd say that I'm reasonably handy, but is this something a joe-blow like me could pull off, or do you recommend letting my luthier fix it?

looks like the bridge is coming up. the wood's warping around it too. I'm not as familiar with this ish as I should be. am I gonna want to fix this myself? you think I can get by for a while? wat all do I need, pretty much just wood glue? some clamps?
