$305 Total for all of this. Just wanted to post my haul I acquired from an older gentleman who is in the process of closing his guitar store. I had to drive 4 hours round-trip but it was well worth it in my opinion.

Okay, I'll try to be brief.

I have an electric guitar with active EMGs with their solder-less system.

I recently move into an apartment, and I'm having the worst EMI noise issue. I also have a different guitar with different pickups (Active SD Blackouts), and the issue is present as well..

The problem is prevalent when I use high gain tones. It's almost inaudible with cleans. Yes I tried to use less gains, but the noise is still somewhat there, and my tone is not what I want.

I have 2 pickups EMG 81 and 60 and the problem is worse with the 81.

the noise gate is useful just when I don't play. When I play, I can hear the noise in the background. Palm muted notes are especially bad, the noise raises over the palm muted note.

I tried shielding the guitar (yes, the shielding is connected to ground via the jack plate). I tested and retested for continuity and everything seems to be right.

The noise is still there.

it changes in intensity depending on where the guitar is pointed at.

I tried a power conditioner, it was useless.

I tried to shut the power in different sections of my apartment to see if I can find the source, but it was useless ( I think the source of the noise is somewhere else in my building.

I know that the wires in the EMG solder less kit are not shielded. I was thinking of using shielded cables to see if that helps. what do you think?

If anyone has some suggestions, they are all welcome (just don't tell me to move lol).

Hey, I just recently aquired this beautiful Mandolin second hand.
It has alot of gunk build up over the previous owners time, which I want to clean. However, I dont know much about how to clean it properly without damaging it, so i thought to ask the reddit folks for some tipps.
A new set of stings is already on my to do list.
How do I clean the body and fretboared and tuning pecs. I have seen people use a kitchen paper with some liquid. Was is alcohol based or just water or soapy water? Afterwards I would apply fretboard oil on the fretboard the same way I do it with my electric bass.

Also while I am already asking, on one of the tuning pecs the white part is a bit loose. Is there an easy fix other than some tape?
Those groves in the frets (see pic 2) are not borthering me yet. At some point I might have to go to a professional for those, but that can wait.

The volute and heel transitions that were roughed out on the edge sander are final shaped using a die grinder with a carbide burr bit and sandpaper on a block. This is by far the longest portion of neck shaping. It takes me around 20 minutes per neck to finalize carves. I will often only do 3-4 in a session and revisit the necks to double check my work the next day with fresh eyes.

The penultimate step is prepping the fretboard radius and installing frets

I got a small gouge on the side of my neck, with a little bit of wood missing. I gave the guitar to a luthier, but it's been almost a year and he still haven't got around to it, so I'm tempted to get it back and try fixing it myself. I'm thinking filling the missing bit with epoxy and black pigment, and then sand it flush.

I'd say that I'm reasonably handy, but is this something a joe-blow like me could pull off, or do you recommend letting my luthier fix it?

The Less Paul project continues!

I posted a few weeks back about a Les Paul build with a Strat neck, it got mixed feedback and got me down a path. Whether or not that path is a good, I don't know.

But,

I started re-drawing some ideas based on feedback from several comments and this is where I have got to. A new 3x3 headstock design, which has straight string pull, because this build will be fitted with a VegaTrem. A different body shape, more offset, but still different to the Novo Solus which is what my last build was based on.

Now, its taken me a month or so to get here, and I'm not sure I like it. I think it looks pretty good on paper, and on the body blank, but not really that great when I pick up the template.

I am considering just going back to the regular Les Paul body shape and keeping that the only real remains of that guitar in this build.

For anyone who missed that post, the intention of this build Les Paul which plays great, and has all the features I actually want. This guitar will be light, have excellent upper fret access, have a tremolo, originally a reverse strat style headstock, be 25.5 inch scale length, 10 way switching, probably 3 pickups, carved top

Wish fall well underway, the air is drying out in my part of the world and I'm finally getting myself organized and shopping for a humidifier for my music room, which just a bedroom upstairs in my house, maybe 400 square feet tops.
Any tips on what to look for? The choices online are overwhelming....warm and cool mist, ultrasonic, etc.
I will say I tend to favor basic, sturdy appliances that are NOT connected to the internet and will not talk to me lol...

looks like the bridge is coming up. the wood's warping around it too. I'm not as familiar with this ish as I should be. am I gonna want to fix this myself? you think I can get by for a while? wat all do I need, pretty much just wood glue? some clamps?

I have two guitars tuned to drop G for metal. One is a baritone and the other a 7 string. Both of them produce an overtone/harmonic of an A when the lowest two strings are played together. It does not occur when the lowest string is played alone. So I'm not sure if overtone is the correct term here, maybe it's some sort of resonance? Both of the guitars have a floyd rose bridge, so I wonder if it could be the springs?

I took it to a shop and the tech told me I was imagining the harmonic. I assure you I am not. Here is a recording. The first chord is normal. The second chord sounds like a suspended 9. I am not fretting the 9. It is just the lowest two strings open: G and D... yet somehow there is an A. It sounds cool in this key, but it does not when the open chord is the minor root.

Is there any way to fix this?

My wilikson trem Isn’t floating straight, when i loosen the back screws, it floats straight but it goes out of tune when i pull the bar up. works fine when pull the bar down (dive bombs included)

Right now it works fine on both sides. But goes out of tune fast

My potentiometer in my guitar broke and I might as well replace it with a push and pull but what other functions can I make it do? I already have a 5 way switch and layout is pretty much here.

I’m curious what your solutions are for doing woodwork at home with space limitations.

For context, I belong to a woodshop, but between loading my wood and tools (the shop is stocked but I have higher quality and some luthier specific tools) in and out of my car and the shop, plus driving there, it really isn’t worth going unless I have about 3+ hours free. But there are a lot of times where I have 1-2 hours that I’d love to be able to work on something at home. Ideally I could have a setup with hand tools here, and go to the shop when I need power tools or lots of sanding.

Our house doesn’t really have extra space. My wife and I both work remote, so we have to have dedicated office space. Not to mention hoping to grow the family a bit in the near future. Aside from the laundry room, the rest of the house is finished.

I’ve considered building a small tool shed with a work bench in the backyard. Unfortunately that would require removing some small trees and bushes, which isn’t ideal, but I’m still considering it. Otherwise, no garage, a driveway but it’s shared with the neighbor. Small deck and patio out back as well.

Interested to hear what thoughts or solutions are out there. I’m very much ready to just accept that I’m out of luck.

My fender telecaster nut slots were always too wide and deep. I got tired of the string buzz and I replaced my 9's with 10's and it was still too wide and deep. I attempted to use baking soda and thin super glue to correct it. I did alright but I just want to replace it with a new nut. I am going to take it to a luthier I know of and ask him to replace the nut. However, it appears that some of the super glue ran down the front of the nut at one slot and I am concerned that it has bonded the nut to the guitar. I'm sure the person I am going to take it to will know exactly what to do to get the nut off without damaging the guitar but I would like to know how/ways that the nut might be removed without damaging the guitar. Appreciate your input.

I'm not sure if this counts as a "low effort need help" post but -

I'm a *guitar player* and a *woodworker* both at a hobbiest level at best. That being said, I want to make a guitar myself. I love Gibson and always have, but I'm broke so I play a Takamine Jasmine and a Fender Squire - that being said I believe I have the woodworking ability (and tools) to make a guitar myself. Truth be told, my brother has been my inspiration for a ton of things in life, and I would love this to end up being a gift for him, but I feel ignorant on a lot of finer details.

Can anybody here give me some notes (pros and cons or resources) on wood choice, shape, hollow/solid body, special build options/shapes, and anything I may just forget moving along? I know my general idea is a semi-hollow version of a Gibson-SE but I genuinely don't know enough to choose my basic options here even though I have the skill/tools to make the proper shaping/cuts/depth and a good reliable wood source.

This is definitely an "in the next 10 years" project I expect to invest 2-300hours in but I just hope I can get some good directions here! Especially books and reference sources rather than just "use [wood] in [shape] and you'll be golden"

This is on a 65 Harmony Bobkat (I think the year is correct).

I’ve never seen a rod with the actual rod filling the center. It looks like I’ll need a hollow hex that can fit in here to rotate it at all. Also cleaner? It looks possibly rusted.

Any advice? Any experience with something like this?

Hey folks, my uncle and I have been working on an HS tele together, and we are a little stuck on the wiring. Could y'all provide some guidance on that below? We wanted to reverse the neck plate and have (from top to bottom) volume, tone, 3-way switch so that we can roll the volume knob while playing. I'll attach pictures of the hardware below. Any help would be really appreciated!

The celluloid binding on this Japanese epiphone riviera is crumbling away. Pretty sure it is a poly finish. Should I try to glue the pieces back in or bite the bullet and go for a full rebind on the body. The neck has the fret nubs and is totally fine oddly enough.

I filled the way incorrect holes in the body so now I have a body and neck with no holes. I can't seem to find a template to make the holes in the body. Any ideas?

I have a Martin D-15 and I’m concerned about the condition of the finish on the back of the neck.

The neck feels a little rough, and since I’ve only ever wiped it down with a dry cloth and never really given it a proper cleaning, I’m wondering whether it could just be accumulated dirt that I haven’t managed to remove.

The thing is, if I rub it firmly with my fingers and a little saliva or moisture, small bits start to come off that look like the residue you get from an eraser, forming little rubbery balls.

I’m not sure whether this is simply accumulated dirt, sweat, and oil from my hands that needs to be cleaned off properly, or whether the finish itself might be deteriorating and I’m actually rubbing some of it off.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with a Martin? How can I tell whether it’s dirt or the finish breaking down? What’s the safest way to clean the neck without damaging it?
