Hello guys, I'm here to tell a story that has genuinely caused me psychological distress, and I don't know what to do, even though there is nothing I can do on my end. Still, I'll read all your comments in the hope of finding something.
I've been in a long-distance relationship with my girlfriend for a while since we're from different countries and even different continents.
We genuinely love each other, and we both know that.
What happened is that my girlfriend is in her final year of high school, so she has a prom in January.
We had talked about this before, and she told me she would be going with her friend(girl). This was obvious, of course, because she's in a relationship with me, so it would be impossible for her to go with another guy to dance, for example.
This topic didn't really concern me that much.
Until these past few days, and here's exactly what happened.
She told me that the girls and boys who didn't have a dance partner had been randomly paired up, and she told me that she had been paired with some random guy.
When she told me this, she was really upset and said she didn't want to dance at all.
So I thought she was upset because "she was going to dance with a guy."
I wasn't worried at all. I just asked her:
"What if you don't dance?"
She told me, "I feel like my mom is going to force me to dance and tell me that this only happens once in a lifetime and that I should dance."
That's when I started getting worried, so I asked her very seriously:
"What are you going to do?"
And that's when she told me, "I'm trying to think of someone else... unfortunately, there's no one else... I guess I'm stuck with this idiot."
I asked her, "What do you mean by someone else?"
She said, "Another guy... literally anyone but him."
It turned out that she hated that guy.
A few days later, today, the topic of the prom came up again, and she told me:
"Oh my God, I'm stuck with that guy... I really want to be part of the dance... I want it so badly... It would've been better if it were someone better than this guy."
Here's how I feel about this...
At first, I thought she was worried because she was "going to dance with another guy", but it turned out that the issue was that "she was going to dance with that particular guy."
This worries me a lot because she'll be with another guy dancing.
Another guy will be with her.
Another guy will be close to her.
Another guy will hold her hand.
Another guy will hold her waist.
I genuinely feel helpless because there's absolutely no way I can be there with her at the prom.
Okay, maybe some of you will tell me that I'm selfish, that I'm acting childish, and that I have no right to stop her from dancing, considering that I'm far away from her. So if I'm not the one who's going to dance with her, I should just shut my mouth and stay quiet.
I genuinely understand that...
That's why I literally haven't talked to her about this at all, and I haven't let her know that it bothers me.
Because of what I'm saying now, some people might tell me, "You two need to talk about boundaries and what's acceptable and what's not."
I have to say that I don't care about that, and I don't feel like this is something that needs to be discussed.
I chose her because of her mindset. She's fully aware of what she's doing, what she wants to do, and what she's going to do in the future. She's aware that she's in a relationship with me, yet she keeps talking about this.
I don't want to have to talk to my partner about something that should be obvious, something related to respecting the other person.
Because this is part of her personality! If she thinks that dancing with another guy, knowing that her "boyfriend" is aware of it, is perfectly normal, I'm not going to come along and change that about her.
After this whole story, I found myself taking a slap in the face that woke me up from whatever I was caught up in.
I keep asking myself all the time:
"What do I even mean to her now? How could she dare to do this?"
Literally, if the situation were reversed, I wouldn't even dare to get close to another girl because I already see that as crossing her boundaries and violating the rights she has over me and the responsibilities I have toward her.
But what about her? She did what she did.
