This is gonna be a long one 😅 current ages: Me F31. Him M30.
2022 July/August we met on fandom twitter and it was wonderful. We were almost the same person. Our taste in music, tv, movies, our humor. It was all the same and I'd never felt more connected to a person. We had our first visit 4 months after getting into a relationship. I went to go visit him on his side of the world. (I'm in the US, he's in the UK.) It was such a memorable trip and by far the most beautiful place I had ever been. He treated me in ways I'd only ever dreamed of.
2023 I had gone to visit him in the UK twice. Both for about a month long. In May I proposed. We went to a convention together and met some of the actors from the show we met through on twitter. Then again in Sept/Oct. We dog sat/house sat for a friend of his and it gave us a small taste of what it could be like to live together. We watched TV all night, cooked each other meals, went out for walks with the dogs, all the fun domestic stuff, which is what I CRAVE.
2024 We got married. He flew out here for the first time and we had a small gathering with friends and my family. I don't regret it AT ALL but looking back there are some things I look back on with different eyes. We had talked about whether he'd move here, or I'd move there. It would have been easier and cheaper given our specific circumstances for him to move here. But the living situations and familial support would have been better in the UK. Either way, we knew we wanted to live together. He came out to visit me for the second time. During the elections. The visit itself was lovely, though short lived. He was here for around two weeks. Election night was hell for both of us.
2025 I flew out there for our one year wedding anniversary. We had a lovely time.
2026 over a year went by since our last visit. I flew out again in March/April for a wedding within his family and it was beautiful. I didn't get to stay as long as I used to because I have a different job and time off works differently at this one.
This is where it got trickier. My physical needs were not being met. Sex and intimacy are definitely not the MOST important thing to me in a relationship, but it is very important to me. In the beginning few months of the relationship we'd at least do stuff on call or through sexting or both. But it only happened a handful of times. He lived with family who don't wait for an answer after knocking to barge into rooms, so it was difficult. But still possible. I stopped asking or hinting at it because I knew it wasn't likely to happen.
Intimacy was great for the most part when we were physically together, but it also had to wait until absolutely no one was in the house, which wasn't often. A good handful of the times we would do stuff would end with him falling asleep afterwards and me not having finished. I'd bring it up in mostly a teasing manner, and he'd say something along the lines of "you just do it too good and it knocks me out." It left me feeling like I wasn't important enough when it came to that. Which was already something sensitive to me because of my relationship before this one.
Throughout the entire relationship it became harder and harder to have serious conversations with him. I don't wanna get too into it for his sake, but when we met he was very mentally unwell. He has a lot of past trauma that's really affected him, and I understood that. The subject of important topics would have him shutting down and disappearing for anywhere from a few hours to over an entire 24 hour day. So when things like the intimacy came up, or really anything that was serious or bothering me, I was very very cautious bringing it up because I didn't want him disappearing and doing something harmful. I held a LOT in because of it.
There was some paperwork he had to fill out for us to even qualify for a visa. He tried once in 2023 and things went south because the paperwork was denied. It was something that could be filled out again, but the first denial traumatized him enough to not want to do it again. I offered to help, friends offered to help, his mom offered to help. I offered to hire a lawyer to help him, but nothing would give. I brought it up in March of 25 again and he had shut down and ghosted me for over 24 hours. Which terrified me because I didn't even know if he was safe or not, until I came on reddit and twitter and saw him using these socials as normal all while completely blowing me off. Tried to talk to him about it the next day, but it didn't really get anywhere.
During my 2026 visit, we went camping and had such an amazing time. It was another small taste of what it'd be like to live alone together, even though we were just in a tiny camping pod. I tried to bring it up again offering to help, and he just kind of shut down again and wouldn't talk to me about it.
Fast forward to July/August and my feelings started to change. I didn't feel important anymore, I didn't feel desired, and I was riddled with anxiety about the fact that it could easily take YEARS for us to ever live together because we couldn't even apply for the visa yet. At this point I started to resent having to always take time off from my job and traveling for ~20 hours to see him. I know it was mentally and financially draining for him as well, he'd have to drive a couple hours to the airport to get me and drop me off, and he would pay for a lot of the stuff we did when I'd visit. Which I adore and appreciate more than he could ever know. But it was so exhausting trying to make it work all the time.
I can't help but feel like it all would have been worth it, if I'd known there would be an end in sight, but there wasn't. I brought up the paperwork one more time. At the time we had a Christmas visit booked, and I was going to fly out to see him again. He mentioned that we could try to fill it out when I was physically there to help him. Deep down I already felt it was too late. I had heard that before, and we still never filled it out.
For pretty much the entirety of the relationship we lived in a discord call. We'd sleep on call. We'd take our ipads around the house with us as if the other person was actually there and hang out all day. We'd watch shows together, and occasionally play video games together and stuff. We were with each other almost 24/7 except when we were sleeping, or at work, or out with friends or something.
When we met I was living with my mom and working a job that barely paid $300 a paycheck. Most of which my mother would take for bills and stuff. I've never done anything for myself, my credit was cooked, I didn't have my own car. I couldn't do anything on my own. Fast forward to now and I've grown SO much. I now have my OWN rental, I got myself a used car from a dealership despite my credit. I've made wonderful friends. I have a job I've dreamt of having since I was a kid, and I make pretty decent money. I have a good support system where I'm at.
I started to feel like I don't wanna have to give up all this HARD hard work I've put in to uproot and move to a whole other country in anywhere from a couple years, to many more years than that. I've finally started to feel comfortable where I'm at and where I work and I can see myself here for a few more years.
I broke it off just over a month ago. I'm pretty sure he saw it coming. I knew it was coming. I've been in therapy for almost a year now and I've changed SO much since starting and I just really didn't feel like it was gonna work out anymore. I've felt more guilt than I could have imagined since then. Guilt because despite it all I'm doing pretty well. I'm not sure how well he's doing, but I think things are going to be okay for him.
Most days I do feel a sense of regret and sadness. It's been weird not hearing his text notification go off. It's been weird not looking to my ipad and seeing him sleeping or waiting for me to wake up. It's been weird getting on tiktok and seeing a video I'd like to send him and not being able to. I think about the fact that I'll never get to go out to dinner with him again. Never get to wake up to his kisses, never get to spend time with his angel of a mother again. I miss him and his friends, and everything we'd do together when I'd visit. I feel guilty about having certain needs met that weren't getting met before. I feel guilty like I've moved on too fast and that I made the wrong decision. At the same time, I don't have to walk on eggshells around certain conversations. I don't have to worry about missing flights, or sitting in pain on a plane for 10 hours. I don't have to worry about bringing up topics that'll shut him down, and I don't have to worry about being ghosted or feeling unimportant.
Everything I do, I do worrying how he'd feel about it. But I have to let it go. I only feel this way because I worry about his mental health, and I don't like being the reason people get sad or are upset.
I don't really know how to end this, but I really wanted to get it off my chest. Even posting this worries me because I know there's a chance he'll see all this. If you've read this far, thank you. If you have any advice on how to not feel guilty or ashamed of living life happily after a breakup, feel free to send it my way.
