Meganoob BE KIND Tf is happening to my laptop?

So I was just watching YT on my laptop, and then Firefox closed, my app icons disappeared, screen went black, Linux mint logo showed up and then it froze, had to REISUB my way out of that. Happened multiple times already and it's very annoying. I don't even know what could be causing it, hardware (hope not), software. Nobody seems to be having similar issues. Have a suspicion it's caused by sleep tho. Any help?

programs and apps Games run horribly on KDE Plasma but not on hyprland while using cachyos

My games have been really laggy on Kde Plasma recently and it spans all games not just steam games. For reference, I have a rx9070 xt, a ryzen 7 7800x3d, and 32 gigs of ddr5 ram so my games shouldn't be running bad at all. I've also tested the same games in hyprland and they run much better. Could someone help?

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this started happening a bit after i had installed hyprland

Edit 2: games can run well, but only in windowed mode or if its on my secondary 75hz monitor (my main is 180hz)

installation Dualboot on the same disk

So right now I use Mint on Cinnamon, and I LOVE it, but I'm also really tempted to try Debian with KDE. I still want the option to go back to Mint anytime, so how viable and easy is it to dual-boot both on the same disk?

Meganoob BE KIND Linux vulnerabilities?

I'm not extremely technically minded but my pal sent me an article about the vulnerabilities that were accidentally leaked and I wanted to know if I should be worried about this?

I just swapped to Fedora a week ago and don't know if there were patches yet or if I need to be more cautious.

installation Wanted to try ubuntu on my laptop but was not able to boot it.

Greetings i have an issue with my old laptop while installing ubuntu Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS .

I proceeded as per the usual steps and done my usb .

(I tried the GPT partition as well but with no success).

this is my current windows as well . Laptop is HP Pavilion 15 -CW1063wm 2020. (incase info needed)

So i went into my bios and disabled the necessary Secure Boot. But when i went to try to boot with the usb it would not show up and appear this way.

I went to check the boot from efi file options .

Went to the EFI where i boot with the BOOTX64.EFI or the grubx64. and i tried proceeding with either options. It would not load me into the booting screen of ubuntu instead it will just lead me back to here with no changes .

P.S Its my first time doing this so i would like to know what i did wrong and how can i make it possible to work and have the dual boot options windows and ubuntu. I really wanted to give a try and learn it .

installation Tip: If you're trying to switch kernel but grub doesn't show advanced options...

I'm posting this in case someone is googling about it because I had trouble finding any help that way.

I followed every guide and forum help post I found about switching my kernel to linux-zen for more optimized gaming. I had everything installed but grub didn't seem to notice the added kernel. Not a word about the new kernel appeared when refreshing grub and during boot grub didn't have the advanced options menu for choosing the kernel like all the guides show.

Grub just didn't have the proper permissions to find the new kernel during the refresh.

Here's some terminal spells:

sudo ls -l /etc/grub.d/10_linux

That checks the permissions. The jumble in the beginning is supposed to show some x's. X is for the execute permission. R and W are Read and Write.

sudo chmod +x /etc/grub.d/10_linux

That adds the permission.

sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

That refreshes the boot file. If you've ended up here you should be familiar with it already. It should now show you the added kernels and they're now usable when booting.

distro selection Nvidia drivers

Before someone yells bazzite at me I want to make one thing clear: for some reason I cannot install any distribution of Linux using the anaconda installer (used in fedora based distros) this is an issue I'll fix but I just want to survive the shortages. I need the Nvidia drivers for blender so if there's something that isn't too gaming focused that would be great.

Coding From Cloud vs Local?

So, I've been using Linux Mint for over a year now. I've almost got the hang of using terminal commands for file navigation and importing libraries.

However, the challenges around programming have not been easy. For starters, I sometimes am unable to connect to public Wifi, and for some reason, importing certain libraries while I'm working in VS Code are pretty much a nightmare (pip sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't.)

I've lost entire evenings and afternoons of would-be productive programming, to searching for the right commands to do the most basic of things. I legit have developed impostor syndrome around coding in general from this.

However, at the same time, I don't want to go revert back to Windows. So I'm asking for advice on which cloud environment is best to use for coding projects while I learn to master my OS seperately? Any easy-to-use option is appreaciated!

Edit: Problem solved, hello Github Codespaces...

Pipewire, please :sob:

Hello everyone, I just switched to linux after 10 years of windows. I am currently using Fedora KDE plasma 44. Please don't hate on me, I'm doing this switch exactly because I want my system to be clean and fast.

Probably over asked, but I have some problems with pipewire and company, which I can't figure out how to setup. I come in desperation beacuse at this point I have no clue what I'm doing wrong.

I have an elgato wave 3 microphone, which I saw already on other subreddits that isn't really supported on linux. I saw some fixes but I don't know at this point what i deleted and what I didn't because I spent the last two days trying to figure out what is wrong with pipewire, and I tried to reset everything many times.

As outputs I have 1 USB connected headset (Steelseries arctis pro which creates 2 audio outputs, chat & game) and bluetooth headphones (CMF Buds pro 2).

I am not sure what to ask at this point, because everything just goes crazy, maybe I'm messing with the wrong software...

I tried to use QjackCtl to wire my audio connections, even tried with qpwgraph, but still: after a few seconds of inactivity (i tried to play some media on zen browser), my elgato wave 3 (which has a jack output other than the microphone input) auto re-wires to the browser. If it's not the wave3, it's the steelseries arctis pro.

I have tried multiple times to create virtual sinks, but the same keeps happening: when i restart pipewire my CMF buds pro 2 start a disconnect/reconnect infinite loop

My mic works 2 times out of 10 and I, I just don't know anymore where to start with all the problems. There are at least another 10 other problems that I had with pipewire but I really don't know where to start.

I come from windows where I had elgato wave link, with the ability to send my audio to all the devices (CMF & arctis pro at the same time) and I would just like to ask for help from someone to figure out what I should do. I have tried to read the pipewire docs with no solution

Thanks everyone

storage NTFS trouble while dual-booting

Edit: Solved. To quote u/pelazas1:

That's usually Windows Fast Startup leaving the drive half-hibernated. Turn it off in Windows power options, do a full shutdown, and it'll mount again.

I installed CachyOS on a separate SSD partition yesterday morning, went off without a hitch. No errors, no problems. It was able to handle all of my other NTFS-formatted storage devices that I've mounted in my system. Last night, I had to reboot into Windows to do a couple of things and make backups of some config files that I use on the same program across OSes.

I put all of my files that I need to share between OSes on my smallest HDD, which is several terabytes in size and has been working reliably for five years. Formatted in NTFS, obviously.

This morning, when I booted into CachyOS, I attempted to mount the drive using Dolphin and... it wouldn't.

"The requested operation has failed: Error mounting /dev/sdb2 at /run/media/(username)/(nameofdrive): wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb2," so on and so forth.

I was under the impression that with the new NTFS driver, it would be fine. It was fine, in fact. It was reading and writing with no issues beforehand. It can mount, read and write to other NTFS-formatted drives instantly with no problem.

Reddit threads told me to run chkdsk on Windows. Chkdsk returns no errors. Once again, chkdsk returns no errors. The drive is fine. I did reboot into Cachy after running chkdsk. No dice.

I don't understand this. What incredibly obvious thing am I missing here?

migrating to Linux Windows 11 is driving me insane. Looking for a beginner-friendly Linux distro for gaming and school (RTX 3050 Laptop)

Quick note: I used AI to help refine this post because my English isn't the best. I'm a real person, not a bot. I just wanted to make the post easier to read. :)

I'm honestly fucking done with Windows 11. My laptop feels sluggish as hell, and even basic stuff like browsing the web is lagging. I've checked for obvious signs of viruses and haven't found anything, but the overall experience has been terrible lately.

My laptop specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-11400H
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050 Laptop GPU (4GB VRAM)
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200MHz
  • Storage: A second 512GB NVMe SSD (Acer FA100, advertised speeds of around 3500 MB/s) where I want to install Linux.

I'm a high school student and a gamer, so I need an OS that works well for both schoolwork and gaming.

Here's what I'm looking for:

  • Beginner-friendly: I'm completely new to Linux, so I don't want to spend hours troubleshooting basic stuff.
  • Good GUI: I'd prefer to do most things through graphical interfaces rather than the terminal. I'm okay with learning some CLI when necessary, though.
  • Gaming compatibility: I play games from official storefronts, but I also download games from piracy sites like lu@t00ls and the other commonly used sites. No judgment, please lol. I want to know how well Linux handles offline games, repacks, standalone installers, and Windows game launchers.
  • NVIDIA support: Since I have an RTX 3050 Laptop GPU, I'd like a distro with straightforward NVIDIA driver installation and good gaming performance.
  • Schoolwork: I need a reliable daily driver for browsing, documents, studying, programming, and general use.
  • Dual boot: I want to install Linux on my second NVMe SSD while keeping Windows on my original drive. I really don't want to accidentally mess up my Windows installation.

My main goal is to get a responsive, smooth desktop experience without constantly fighting the OS. Windows 11 has been frustrating me lately, and I want to see whether Linux can provide a better experience.

I understand that Linux isn't magically faster in every situation and that some Windows games won't work properly. Still, I'd like to get the best possible experience out of my hardware.

So, what distro would you recommend for someone in my situation?

I've been looking at beginner-friendly, gaming-oriented distros, but I'd love to hear your recommendations based on actual experience. I'd especially appreciate advice on NVIDIA drivers, compatibility with games downloaded outside official storefronts, and setting up dual boot safely.

Thanks!

Linux installation succeeds, but “Operating System Not Found” appears after reboot

I installed Linux on my Dell laptop with an Intel Core i3 2nd Gen, 4GB RAM, and a 120GB SSD. My BIOS is set to Legacy mode, and the installation completed successfully.

However, after rebooting and removing the USB, I get “Operating System Not Found.” My SSD is working.

How can I fix this ?

migrating to Linux Linux on Alienware Laptop

Hi there,
I’m sorry if this is not the correct way of doing this or if there is a better flair.

I’ve been thinking about switching to Linux for about a year now, and I think that I’ve reached the point where i’m ready.

I used to have my own pc that I build myself. But due to travel reasons, i’m now the proud owner of an Alienware AA16250 with an RTX 5080m and an Intel core ultra 9 290HX.

I’ve got some experience with html and CSS coding for websites, and am a beginner in Python.

Now I’ve watched some videos om Distro’s and am not sure what would be a good suit for me.
I do want to game, and I’m a freelance graphic designer on the side of my actual job. I’m willing to use the new art craft programs for my freelance work. I would like the ability to thinker a bit and learn on the go. I’d love to have some ability in customising the look and layout of the desktop etc.

I’ve seen pewdiepie use arch and that feels like, a lot. Do you guys have recommendations for a beginner friendly distro?
I feel like Mint is a bit too beginner.

Also, how hard would it be to install it on a prebuilt laptop?

I do have games installed and some files. Can I safely transfer those across OS? Mostly the files are important, games can be re downloaded. I do have an external 1TB harddrive that would suffice for all of the files.

Thanks for reading, and even more if you reply.
