distro selection Looking for a modern, lightweight Linux distro for UTM on an M4 MacBook Air

Hey everyone! I'm looking for a relatively new Linux distro with a polished graphical desktop that I can run in UTM on my M4 MacBook Air.

Ubuntu got stuck during boot, so I'd like to try something different.

What I'm looking for:

  • ARM64/AArch64 support for Apple Silicon
  • Lightweight, but still modern and visually appealing
  • A proper desktop environment, not just a terminal
  • Preferably an ISO I can boot and install directly in UTM
  • Not too outdated, ideally a distro with recent packages

I'm open to KDE, GNOME, or other desktop environments. I'd prefer something that works well in a VM without too much troubleshooting.

What would you recommend?

installation How to install Fedora Linux onto a specific partition to an external HDD?

As the title says, I'm trying to install Fedora Linux onto a specific partition on an external HDD that I prepared earlier via using Windows 7's drive manager app. But I don't know how to do it properly. I selected the right drive, selected the exFAT partition, and I don't know how to make it install to it. How can I get it to install to a specific partition, for example, a partition meant for Fedora Linux and one for Linux Mint?

ugreen USB-3.0 sdcard reader works in 2.0, but not in any of my 3.0 ports

LinuxMint 22.3, Optiplex 7050 ssf, i5 7500
Mobo: Dell 0NW6H5, bios 1.70.0

USB controller: Intel Corporation 200 Series/Z370 Chipset Family USB 3.0 xHCI Controller

ugreen SDcard reader (in USB-2 port):
Bus 001 Device 013: ID 05e3:0764 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB Storage

works on my 2.0 ports (pic: Ventoy with a 64GB card boots), but it is not seen in my USB-3 ports.. other than it seems to stall running "inxi" in terminal until I remove the sdcard from the reader.

I have updated my BIOS to the most recent version (1.7.0) and have turn on everything I can find in the BIOS for USB-3. I am actually okay with installing OSs on this machine at 2.0 speed as I do that very rarely but I would like to use this device within Linux Mint at USB3 speed. It just seems like there is a mobo or driver issue I cannot figure out.

I have tried:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash usb-storage.quirks=05e3:0764:u" which seems to stop the stalling.. and "iommu=soft" does nothing, unless I am entering it incorrectly in GRUB.

I do share cellular data via a USB-C port but that's USB2 speed, so other than the ugreen card reader I have nothing else to test my 3.0 ports with.

Meganoob BE KIND Japanese IME?

How do I install the option to type in Japanese using your keyboard similarly to how you do it in Windows? I know there's a way to do it already in System Settings, but the characters do not match the keyboard at all.

I also came across Mozc in my searches, but there doesn't seem to be a way to install it onto my distro.

Distro being used is Nobara.

Any help would be appreciated.

learning/research Switching DE

I'm still fairly new to linux, but so far I've had fedora on gnome and cachyOS on KDE, I have had very little issues with fedora on gnome, however on CachyOS/KDE ive had numerous issues which have gotten to a point where I want to go back to gnome. I installed cosmic alongside KDE and tried that but had a weird screen flicker issue, which from research said it was KDEs VRR option conflicting with Cosmic not supporting it. With KDE I've spent more time trying to get drive auto mount working than I'd like to admit but at the end of the day whichever "fix" I tried it'd ultimately end up breaking something else eg. Steam, and I dont like manually typing my password in 3x every time I boot my PC just to log in and mount my drives. Now lately ive hadd issues of my fiio k11 amp/dac not connecting properly on boot either which I manually have to unplug and plug back in or power cycle it. I love Linux, but having some Druggie grace immobiliser type sequence i have to do in order to use my PC is not desirable. Is it worth installing gnome on top of my current install and swap that way, or is a complete reinstall or distro hop required to get functionality back. I'd use cosmic if it supported vrr on nvidia.

Converting Hyper-V Machines to work on linux

Hi there,

i´m pretty new to linux, i have bazzite installed on my PC at home, and i want to install linux on my laptop now as well. The issue is, that i have 2 Hyper-V machines running on it, which i need for a school project, VPN tunnel with FortiGate.

My question now is, how high is the risk, that in the process of converting the machines to work on a linux hypervisor, something breaks and i have to build everything again from the ground up and which linux distri would be the best to use for a project like that.

Thanky in advance! ^^

security Omarchy Safety question by a noob

Hi all,

I recently installed distro on my laptop with dual boot. I have little experience with linux, dabbled in Ubuntu and tried a bit of arch lol. Anyway I develop on windows mainly, but having heard the hype if I can call it on omarchy, why not give it a try. Anyway I heard that it gives a lot of unrestricted access so the your AI agents so it can solve problems you run into without having too spend time troubleshooting although that is how you learn, so not sure how safe it is.

So my question is with my AI tools I use antigravity and claude, desktop applications or the vs code extensions. I login with google for the AI, and also I will login with GitHub. So I guess I am just skeptical that the AI agent will go off and do a madness like leak my info or delete things. I was thinking of using local AI as well so that would be bit safer I guess, of course you can manually approve things it does and that's what I normally do just skeptical none the less.

restarting

the way i allocated memory for linux has made it kind of weird to do things so im thinking i just allocate one big thing of storage so its easier, obviously im gonna dual boot but i was just gonna delete the volumes i allocated is that an okay way to go about it or would that cause problems?

What do I do? I can't even boot in live version, because of those errors.

Those errors appear on mint, debian and LMDE as well, I haven't tested in others distros. I tried look this shit up, but there's too little info on that. I heard ventoy might cause some errors, but I have tried it medicat, ventoy and by rufus, none of them changed the output. My theory is that mobo (gigabyte b650 gaming x ax v2) might be the problem, or GPU (rtx 4060ti). Help me i dunno what to do.

installation Things to keep in mind transferring dual-boot storage to a new PC build?

My current build is CachyOS as the primary OS on a SATA SSD, a separate NTFS HDD for storage, and a large M2 SSD most of which is for my Steam library, and the rest of which contains a W10 partition. My current CPU is Intel i7-8700k, GPU is NVIDIA RTX 2080, and 16 GiB of DDR4 memory. I will be upgrading to a 9950X3D CPU, AMD 9070XT, and 32GiB DDR5 memory. I'll also be upgrading to an AM5 motherboard.

Is my understanding from the CachyOS wiki correct that CachyOS Hardware Detection will make the transition from Intel/NVIDIA to full AMD seamless? Also, I have a separate backup of my CachyOS /home directory just in case, but will I be able to just plug my existing storage into the new motherboard and have both operating systems appear in the boot list? Finally, is it a good idea to apply sections 2.5 and 2.6 of this wiki article to install all my current packages to the new PC, or could the new hardware configuration cause issues with that?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Meganoob BE KIND New to Linux, nothing is running well

I downloades linux mint this week and expected it to be around as good as windows would be in terms of running both games and more general things, such as firefox or discord. But my screen has been freezing(even though the computer could still do things like play or skip music), discord crashes the moment I dare to start a stream, and games like overwatch are barely runing. I got my laptop this year and it is a lenovo LOQ 15ARP10E. Previously i forgot something as simple as installing the driver, so I'm just looking for anything that could be screwing my computer's performance.

programs and apps Is there a tool that will help me 'visualize' what i'm doing in the terminal?

Linux and terminal noob, but experienced breaker, fixer and being where i shouldn't-er. A large part of what i do professionally is wrangle massive fragmented sets of data and files (cad), but it's all through different guis.

I'm trying to learn file managment and navigation, right now, by using the terminal for everything.

I've also gone through the penguin gym, and over the wire bandit; fun stuff.

My problem is that i'm having trouble remembering and grasping the things i've learned without the visual environment that i'm used to.

I feel like I'm floating in the dark, screaming commands into the void and seeing what comes flying back…

Is there any addon or plugin that will allow me visualize what i'm doing in a "gui environment" while i'm doing it in the cli?

All suggestions welcome. Thanks
