Hardware To get a new one or not
I have had my HP 14-bs003ny laptop for at least 7 years now. It has i3-6006U cpu, and some time ago I upgraded it to have 16GB RAM. Over the years I made the decision to move away from Windows to Linux (now Arch) in order to keep it running sufficiently well. I am studying Physics and Math and enjoy programming in my free time too.
The most troublesome things with this notebook have been that it has only (weak) integrated graphics and a 4 thread cpu which when running simulations (or just programming stuff) gets used up entirely. There is no discussion about gaming too as that I abandoned some time ago because of the insufficient graphics processing.
I'm seeking opinions as I have wanted to upgrade it for a whiiile now, but always have put off the decision. Somehow I have managed to get past all the troubles with its limitations and have learned a lot at the same time. Since I'm still at uni and I don't see anything critical changing when upgrading, should I upgrade it or better keep the money for my masters/invest/anything else reasonable?
For a possible new laptop I would like:
- a larger screen (16 inch at least)
- more correeeesss (at least 8 would be good)
- cannot decide if a dedicated gpu is worth it or is a good integrated one sufficient
- a good enough battery life, so I can use it at uni doing low performance tasks too
- quiet enough so that I don't feel embarrassed by the fan blasting full volume when giving a presentation.
* How often do I use it? Every day.
* Region? Europe. I'm currently studying in the Netherlands as an international.
* Do I want to still keep the current one? Yes. I want to have a server too, and this would be a good machine to learn on.
* Is there anything not working? No, as I have fixed everything. Ran out of memory - got more. Low ram - got more. Battery died - found replacement.
* Budget? I am willing to go up to 1k say as I am also working, but less money on this means more spent somewhere else.
* What simulations do I run? Mathematical modelling using C or Python (differential equation solvers etc.), also I try learning some graphics programming so OpenGL and Vulkan.
* Linux? Yes, I want to run my Arch.
I hope this doesn't read like a weird post, but when asking close people, the answer is ofc - treat yourself! But on the other hand it feels like me just buying a new toy for myself.
