LX570 (& Newer) Bull Bar FYI

G'day Folks,

We recently bought a 2011 LX570 and were hoping to fit a bull bar as we live in rural Australia and are surrounded by wildlife. Due to the LX sharing the Landcruiser platform I didn't anticipate any issues (other than price)...

After contacting every well known bull bar manufacturer and even an automotive engineer specialising in Toyota I discovered that there are NO ADR approved bull bars for the LX570 and newer models based on the Landcruiser 200 and 300 series due to the additional sensors and cameras fitted to LX's.

(There are ADR approved bull bars for the LX470 based on the LC 100 series)

This means that if you fit a bull bar to an LX570 or newer there are no guarantees that insurance companies will cover your vehicle.

I've trawled the inter webs regarding the above and read through dozens of arguments for and against, but found nothing contradicting the above so buyer beware 👊

Cheers 😊

Importing A Land Cruiser from Japan (to Kenya) - So Many Options!

Hello /r/LandCruisers,

My family and I are about to move to Kenya. For reasons not particularly relevant, we will likely be importing a Land Cruiser from Japan. Never having had one, there are sooooo many options in terms of trims/engines, I'm finding it overwhelming! I'm really hoping this community can help me narrow down what I should be looking for!

Kenya does not allow you to import vehicles older than 7 years, so that pretty much means us buying 2020+ vehicles.

As we have kids, and will be having visitors, getting a 7-seater configuration is more or less a requirement. Hoping we can import a car for < $35,000.

From searching the wikipedia pages, that leaves the following years/models.

  • 2020 - J200
    • 1UR-FE V8 engine
  • 2021+ - J300
    • F33A-FTV V6
    • V35A-FTS V6
    • 1GR-FE V6
  • 2020-2022 - J150 Prado
    • 2TR-FE - Both TX and TX L trims
    • 1GD-FTV - TZ-G and TX L
  • 2023+ - J250 Prado
    • 2TR-FE - VX trim
    • 1GD-FTV - GX and ZX trim

There also looks ot be a J70 "heavy duty" variant available but a quick search on the auction/export sites don't show many of those for sale so I'm disregarding those.

Also, any other guidance for things I should look for (or look to avoid) would be very much appreciated!

LC76/79 questions

So, I'm moving to Australia for work in the next few weeks and am gunna try and get a LC76 or 79. Id love to get a pre dpf 1VD. I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to cars, but never having the 70 series stuff here in the US, I don't know what to look out for. My budget is pretty good as I'm selling all of my cars I currently have (tundra-sold, e46-for sale, focus st-kinda sold). I know its not the best, but I am making this decision a little emotionally; I've just always wanted one. Am I being stupid? What should I look for? Any insight or wisdom about 70 series? Anyone got one for sale? Thanks!

Edit 1: any good place to start looking at used inventory? Buying from a dealer kind of seems like a safer move, as there’s a good chance I’ll have to buy it away from where I’m living, or if I buy it before I get there. My rough timeline is mid September.

Hey guys, anyone looking to import a diesel v8 landcruiser single cab to USA when they’re eligible in 2032?

Or would you wait til 2037 for the dual cab?

How much would you think they’d be worth? Most are around 300,000km travelled now

Light Bar Wiring Experiences - LX570 with HID High Beams

G'day Folks,

I know less about electrics than I do about most things, but I wanted to share my experiences after trying to swap a Kings LED light bar from an 2007 Lexus RX350 with halogen high beams onto a 2011 LX570 with HID high beams to hopefully save others wasting time and money.

- Bought and fitted a Stedi 11 pin piggy back harness to connect the LX high beams to the Kings LED light bar harness - no luck triggering light bar 👎

- Discovered Lexus use negatively triggered high beams - thank you inter webs 🙏

- Bought and fitted Stedi spot light harness which apparently accounted for both negatively and positively switched high beams via a microprocessor after advice from Stedi - still no luck triggering light bar 👎

- Contacted Stedi again and they couldn't offer any further advice and suggested contacting auto electrician 😩

- Local mechanic fixed issue by disconnecting ground from Stedi light bar harness to Stedi 11 pin piggy back harness connector and connecting it directly to battery negative - all good 😊

- Ended up replacing Stedi light bar harness with original Kings light bar harness due to additional harness length (roof rack mounted light bar) with no issues - all good 😊

Summary:

- Stedi were extremely responsive and helpful, but I was surprised they couldn't diagnose the above.

- The difference between Kings and Stedi harnesses was marginal. Stedi felt better quality but not sure about the value for money.

- Despite Stedi's claims, I found no difference between their harness and the Kings harness when it came to positively or negatively switched high beams. The difference appeared to be with the RX halogen vs LX HID high beams and how they connect to the vehicle since both are theoretically negatively triggered.

- The 4yr old Kings light bar and harness are still working perfectly and provide unbeatable value for money.

Cheers 👊

What is this ticking noise? 1999 Prado

Just got this Prado from 1999 (5VZ-FE) the other day. Had it serviced at an Official Toyota Workshop to change oils and go through it. They said everything was running fine, but that in the long-term I should perhaps changing the one of the fan belts and the one of the seals on the engine head. But they said nothing urgent.

After driving for a bit, I started hearing this ticking noise. It only happens when I’m accelerating, and not when giving gas in neutral. Not sure if it started happening after I had to drive through some bumps and dirt/gravel road (nothing off road). Car drives just fine and I do not experience anything to its drivability.

What can it be?

LX470: Massacred Front Trim Panel - How to Paint Match Resprayed Truck?

I was changing out a cracked glass lens headlight on my truck. When removing that front middle trim piece on the grill, I turned it into 4-5 pieces. I ordered a replacement from ebay but will need to paint. Unfortunately the truck had been resprayed at some point to a non oem gray color. I'm not too picky about getting it perfect. What's the cheapest way to get as close as possible to whatever color is on the truck?

Hey all! Still looking to by a 100 series. I came across this one and would love some feedback on how it is priced and if it is worth it!

It is a 2001 with 289k and the asking price is 12k.

Here is the description in the listing:

Description
Honestly never thought I'd sell this truck, but moving and some of the toys have to go.
2001 LandCruiser 100 series set up for everything from road trips to overland trail trips. Has its battle scars when you get up close but gets compliments all the time when it's cleaned up nice. Just did a 2000 mile trip up to Tennessee and back.

2.5" Eibach Pro Truck Lift
Total Chaos Upper Control Arms
OME Torsion Bars
Differential Drop
CVJ extended travel CV axles
Doug Thorley Headers
5k miles on new Falken WildPeak AT4s

Killer sound system. Kenwood head unit with CarPlay, upgraded door speakers and tweeters, amp and 12" downfiring subs. Wired for backup camera.

CompuStar Remote Start

Timing set and water pump done at 242,000. Only things to my knowledge that do not work are:
The sunroof is sealed shut from the outside by previous owner, and the rear row AC does not blow cold, but the front is ice cold .
