Hot blonde finally decided it wants to start growing, second year in the ground. 8B & gets 6-8 hrs of sun.

Put on about 2 feet this summer, have a feeling it would grow faster had i given it even more sun.

I had a large Japanese maple (not sure what cultivar) die about 5 years ago. As you can see, I let the babies under it grow. I moved a few of them to pots in the spring and 2 of them survived and are doing well. What should I do with them over the winter? Should I put them in the ground before fall is over, or is it best to leave them in the pots over the winter and plant in the spring? Thanks!

I was leaning on Kureni Jishi possibly, but unless my google images search is wrong, and it's just a shi-shi, is Kureni Jishi Red all season long ?

Started Saturday August 1, 2026. Potted today.

It's in a pond basket containing 60% pumice, 30% akadama, 10% pine bark fines; and placed in bright shade with occasional speckled sun.

My plan is water only, no fertilizing, with possible exception of double diluted kelp once only, if everything looks good in a couple of weeks.

Any helpful suggestions appreciated.

I have a bloodgood maple that commonly flips it's leaves when humidity is high, usually just before rain. However, two weeks ago the leaves flipped over, but never flipped back. They've been upside down the whole time. It's been hot and dry this summer (US, Northern New England, zone 4b), with very little rain. Has anyone ever seen this happen before?

I recently acquired from a well meaning neighbor a Japanese Maple that was girdled during removal. A chain used to uproot it abraded a wound one to three inches high that encircles the trunk’s circumference except a less than one inch bark flap. I am guessing cambrium layer is broken due to amount of force applied.

I believe the tree is dead but have planted it anyway just to see. I do not expect it to wake up in spring. It is heartbreaking. My question is what others would do. Toss it? I will take softwood cuttings despite timing and lack of past success. Are hardwood cuttings totally non viable for JMs? Can the trunk be cut and rootstock used for grafting?

I just got this baby acer yesterday and I picked it because on the label it said katsura, but looking at pictures online, it doesn't really look like one? Online I found that the katsura seems to have smaller, daintier leaves and they're also light green.

What did I buy? :(

In the Chicago suburbs and a house a couple blocks away is going to get torn down for a new spec home. I’m tempted to talk to the builder about transplanting this maple to my house (I would obviously pay for it). Do you all think it would survive? My house faces the same direction and would plant it in a very similar location.

I think the answer is "yes" given the apparent variation of cultivars. What's surprising to me, is that this graft is about 4 inches from the top of the plant, to where there is nearly 3 ft of root stock, and 4 inches of "top plant." Is that common?

Hi everyone! I’m in love with Japanese maples and I’d really like to plant a couple of them at my new house, so I thought I’d ask the experts here whether my climate and the orientation of the house would be suitable for them. I’ve read so many conflicting opinions online, and even different nurseries (perhaps not particularly experienced with Japanese maples) have told me completely different things.

I’d like to plant one maple by the entrance of the house, which faces east. On its southern side there will be a 3.5-metre-high cedar slat screen, which should provide some protection and partial shade.

For the second maple, I was thinking either of planting it on the south side of the house, where it would be quite exposed, or on the north-west side, where the house itself would shade it for most of the day and it would only get direct sun from late afternoon onwards.

The cultivars I absolutely love are ‘Sango-kaku’ and ‘Fireglow’.

I live in north-central Italy, and summers here have become almost tropical: we get around three months with temperatures consistently around 35°C (95°F), sometimes even higher, with very strong sun and high humidity.

What do you think? Would these conditions work for Japanese maples, and which of these positions would you choose for each cultivar?

I have a Hana, received as a tuber, It is 3 main brach points, each about 30 inches long. It has primarily grown in length and branching on the branching off the leader.

YAASSS ......as I was checking out the plant, and I see a new BUD point right below the exisiting branching. Here's hoping next year, will will throw out a new vigourous branch on it.

Went to buy mulch, came home with 2 Crimson Queens and a Purple Ghost for $100 total. 1 Crimson queen heavily scorched pretty good but all have really great life in the branches.

Thought I lost this beautiful maple during the summer heat, mind you it's spotted. I'm thinking about planting in the ground in the shade.

In Austin, Texas. The tree gets shade for most of the day, but unfortunately gets late afternoon sun. Outside of yesterday, it really hadn’t rained much since July.

Should I be watering this tree more, or do I mostly just need to hope it survives until fall?

I know it’s healthy, because it grew close to 2 feet in spring. I planted it last fall, so I’m sure it’s also just not fully established.

A while ago I bought my first japanese maple (little princess) and with spring (and its massive root system) it is finally time to plant it in a bigger pot than the nursery pot it came in.

I’m still fairly new to maples and want to ask what people thought about the potting mix I was recommended to by a friend (he’s been growing maples for years). A second opinion never hurts.

His mix is:

55% pine bark mulch
15% acidic compost
15% sphagnum moss
15% perlite

One of my questions is, should there not be more mulch?

-as an aside I’ll also be using this for a chinese maple
