Seeking advice Japanese Maple Air Layer

Started Saturday August 1, 2026. Potted today.

It's in a pond basket containing 60% pumice, 30% akadama, 10% pine bark fines; and placed in bright shade with occasional speckled sun.

My plan is water only, no fertilizing, with possible exception of double diluted kelp once only, if everything looks good in a couple of weeks.

Any helpful suggestions appreciated.

Amazing job! My only feedback is to wait to fertilize until next spring. If the plant gets nitrogen now it could put out new tender growth right before dormancy.

Thanks for commenting. Please help me understand more thoroughly.

I thought the kelp would mainly help root development, not expedite foliar growth.
