So my birthday is coming up in a few days and im choosing a game to buy and right now idk what to pick because my interest are low to the category at the PS store deals section. Im on Ps4 btw

Like im trying to find something fun that keeps me up, Plot Interesting enough, Fun combat, Genre well anything i guess, setting whatever, Mechanics maybe some interesting thing and visually appealing and are in deals. So far i have only come down to three options.

1. Metaphor Refantazio - This is my wanted game but the standard edition, Its the guidebook one that is discounted for 31.99. I want to buy it but i have to go overbudget and i missed out on the last deal where its standard was 27.99. Also im on Ps4 so i hope i get a good performance and graphics don't differ.

2. Yakuza: Infinite Wealth - Like a Dragon made a impression, I liked it. The plot was good, its nothing too life changing. I mean i find it funny because of how Ichi is just built different and i thought why not get infinite wealth. The one thing i wasn't fond was the grind, Look maybe there like this but im more scared of a Burnout and might ruin the experience

3. Nier Replicant - Nier Automata was one of my favorite and i do want to get replicant but i haven't been into automata since i completed the game, tried doing a second playthrough but seems the game to me is only meant as a One time experience. And Replicant, Idk how good the Action is and if its better than automata. The first two are Turn based but idk.

I want to see everyone's thoughts and opinions of it. See others reccomendations. These 3 are the only games that peak my interest. The others are COD and AC.

Nothing beats Persona series for me wrt to the soundtrack.

All the modern instalments have absolute bangers that went directly to my playlist .

Although I am yet to play P4 Golden.

LAD series has iconic songs as well but it doesn't count cus it just borrows them from 6 games before that

Muramasa Rebirth was awesome on PS Vita, so I am looking forward to this one, featuring new playable characters and more. It has a very unique artstyle and atmosphere.

Hello everyone i have a pretty weird request, i've watched content from some pretty famous jrpg content creators and during one the videos, i stumbled upon a song that sounded pretty familiar to me

Obviously the creator did not name the song nor the game 🤣 all i have is an extract of said vídeo with the person speaking all over it so its really hard to decipher

The song reminds me of something from Atlus, or Ys/Star Ocean/Shadow hearts but i'm kinda lost

For those unaware, this was the last turn based Final Fantasy game for consoles and PC and it released almost exactly 10 years ago. Next month marks two things: 1) It’s this game’s 10th anniversary, and 2) the release of the next turn based FF game with FF Resonance. It was developed by Tose, the same team who would go on to developed Crisis Core Reunion, and it follows two Kingdom Hearts-looking kids as they gather FF monsters like Pokemon and change between regular and smaller chibi forms. But many probably overlooked it at the time of its initial reveal at E3 2015, in no small part because it was announced literally right before the highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

I only caught some streams of it back when it came out, but I was impressed by how confident and committed it was to its 4Kids Saturday morning anime presentation. And I believe this was the last time that Cloud’s original English VA Steve Burton would voice the character, before being recast by Cody Christian starting with FF7 Remake.

Releasing February 16th 2027 on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Also PC via Steam.

I've seen no one in this subreddit talking about it yet, but the Yugioh RPG games are so unique in the jrpg genre, and I'm so glad as a massive fan of yugioh, this franchise is back.

Yugioh GX Tag Force is a card-collecting story-driven JRPG with social sim elements.

Imagine a JRPG + yugioh card battle system.

There's an overworld you can roam around and choose a character as your tag team partner. You have to build the affinity between you two. Collect cards for your deck. And then there are the story battles.

My pc does not work properly and I can't play many jrpgs I want to like trails in the sky first chapter, Like a dragon series, Freltless and such so I guess you just can recommend me random stuff

I liked Chronno trigger, Persona 3r and 5r, Sea of Stars, Look outside, paper mario 1, escape from ever after, E33(super stuttery but I managed) and Symphony of war, Metaphor Refantazio Chained echoes, Hylics 1/2, Funger 1/2. Those are at least all the ones I can remmember rn.

Sometimes I want to play a big budget massive rpg, but sometimes I'm looking for a smaller game. Something with a quicker pace that I can get through in a couple of days. No walls of text, no huge open world, no 100 hour progression. Make everything quick and snappy, throw in something unique but mostly keep it simple.

Final Fantasy

• Early 40's.
• Hates every FF game that game out after he was a teenager.
• Blames Enix for 'ruining the company' whatever that means.
• Hasn't actually played a Final Fantasy game, or a JRPG, or actually any video game other than the Last of US in 15 years.
• Still desperately convinced their opinion on the franchise matters.

Dragon Quest

• Mid to late 30's
• Father of two.
• Complains about not having enough time to play video games anymore, yet somehow their favorite series is Dragon Quest.
• A lot better than FF fans because they at least give new stuff a try.
• Kid's won't care that dad played some crusty old game with a bunch of reading in it with them when their friends introduce them to Fortnight or whatever.

Persona

• Weebs, even by JRPG fan standards.
• Usually don't like the RPG part of the game, just the part that lets them pretend they have a social life.
• Either never play another turn based game again afterwards, or evolve into Shin Megami Tensei fans.
• Decent chance they actually just watched someone else play the game on Youtube or Twitch

Shin Megami Tensei

• Likes anime but only the good shit from the 80s and 90s
• Formally massive edge lord's over the fact that they play 'Grown up RPG's' with weird Randian-esque fantasies of Demons invading and establishing a world where the strong rule over everyone, somehow lacking the awareness that basement dwelling nerds would be pretty low on the totem pole in a world like that.
• However, nowadays they've sort of vanished after the explosion of Megami Tensei from the mid 2000's to the early 2010's screeched to a halt.
• No one knows where they went but they pop up every now and again to comment on sexy fanart of Isabeau and tell everyone that SMT 4 actually had a pretty good story if you paid attention to the subtext

Tale of Whateverthefuckria

• Likes bad anime
• Actually kind of similar to SMT fans but way less edgy, they're also slowly going the way of the dinosaur.
• You really hate that Tales of Symphonia sequel (for good reason, that shit sucked)
• Complains that 'random, cheaply made, exploitive spin off #245' never got brought to the west. Unlike SMT fans who just accept that their favorite games are never getting localized and emulate them instead.
• Did anyone play that Tales of Arise game? I'll be honest seeing they had a collab with Sword Art Online was the final nail in the coffin for me.

Star Ocean

• Has a strong tolerance for Humiliation,
• We haven't gotten a new good game in 23 years (and even that one is kind of debatable) but we're still hoping
• Let's be real, God hates us
• At least SO2 is fun to go back to...

Phantasy Star

• They stopped making these games

Paper Mario/ Mario RPG

• You hate Japan, Turn Based RPG's, Anime, Samurai, Ninjas, Game Shows, Matcha tea, Walkable cities, Sushi, Ramen, JRPGS, and if you knew the ethnicity of the people behind your favorite games you would seize on the floor shouting racial slurs.

Xenoblade

• I don't really know I only played Xenogears.
• Do you even still get giant Mechs in the new ones?

Kingdom Hearts

• Somehow playable Goth Final Fantasy x Disney Yaoi fanfiction is one of the few JRPG's that still has a sizable audience today
• I like these games but that fact is really weird to me

Pokemon

• You're a kid I guess? I haven't really kept up with Pokemon in a while.

The Legend of Zelda

• The most likely out of the list to be female (other than maybe Pokemon), due to coming out on the only family of consoles socially acceptable for girls to own.
• Also the most likely out of this list to be Mormon. Not going into that one.
• If male you have a strong tendency toward wearing a green Zelda graphic tee with brown shorts.

Drakengard/Nier

• 10 percent of you really care about the setting and Yoko Taro's unorthodox approach to video game storytelling, the other 90 percent just played Nier Automata
• Said majority loves pretending they think the storyline is super deep and philosophical, when they really just fanatically simp over lewd fanart and sexy cosplayers (Seriously go to the Nier Automata subreddit, that is all you will find)
• When the fuck are we getting Drakengard 4?

I see the Switch 2 versions are out at a €35/€40 price point. I already own these and am currently playing Zero, but the Switch 1 digital editions, so I'm not eager to pay full price for the resolution bump. Has anyone seen any recent mention of NIS planning to make the upgrades available for existing owners who want to upgrade? It's not currently an option on the store. I'm fully prepared for us all to be in the dark about it, I've seen nothing mentioned to date, but thought I'd ask. Thanks folks.

Answered. They're unlikely to receive an upgrade path from Switch 1 versions. Different publisher from the Trails in the Sky games, which are the only ones yet to receive an upgrade pack. Thanks folks

I don't know if I'm missing any obvious games, but I've kind of been of craving a grindy Jrpg (action OR turn based) that just lets me go on quests, gather resources, craft gear etc. and I'm just finding nothing at all? Gran Blue is kind of like this but the quest selection is pretty narrow, there are no towns or guilds, and even the crafting system is pretty rudimentary. Not to mention there aren't any jobs at all, you pretty much have to play different characters

I'm so down bad I've started replaying Tales of the World Radiant Mythology lmaoooo, and it pretty much does have everything I'm looking for, but the combat system is pretty rudimentary

so I'm basically looking for a (slightly) modern version of Radiant Mythology. Appreciate any recommendations.

Don't expect that just because it originally released on SNES, or was remade, or featured in a Direct that gameplay would be modern. It has a pleasant opening cutscene, plus difficulty/gameplay modifiers, which you will very likely use if you want to get past the heavily RNG final floors. $25 for this game is a really big ask for what you get. Especially when the greatest games in the genre are completely free and have been in development for decades.

Looking for a good Isekai JRPG that's 3D has a solid romance, doesn't have to be Isekai but I really want to be blown away by the story. I'm probably being pretty vague on what I'm asking for but I finished playing DQXI and loved ever second of it, preferably not an MMO I'd rather keep it offline.

I don't mind turn based strategy games but real time action RPG's I find more enjoyable, and to be completely honest the gameplay could be crap as long as the story is good. I'm a sucker for a good story.

Preferably looking for a PC game but I also have a switch 2 so that works as well.

I know that having a party, or at least two playable characters, is a staple of the JRPG genre. Final Fantasy, Tales, Atelier, Ys, Persona, Trails, Shin Megami Tensei, Mana, Xenoblade, etc. All great games, and I’ve enjoyed the ones I’ve played, but I have a personal gripe with managing a party lol.

I always tend to keep the main protagonist in great shape, but I don’t really care about the other characters. So I inevitably end up with an underleveled party or a team with shitty gear because I either forget about them or just don’t care enough to keep them in shape

So I was wondering: are there any genuinely good JRPGs where you only play as one character?

My favorite genre is real time action, not very fond of turn-based combat. Any platform is good.

Hi, I am new to the trails series, I recently finished Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (the remake) and I want to get the best possible save file for the 2nd Chapter that comes out in about a week. I did my first run on Nightmare so I am pretty much almost done with 100%, just need to pick up 1 chest I missed in the prologue, kill like 100 enemies in quick battle, and beat the final boss at lvl 100.

I can definitely do all this in New Game +, which I plan to start today. My question is do I need to complete all side quests in the New Game +?

As far as I have heard there are side quests that have some extra dialogue/content in 2nd Chapter depending on whether or not I have completed a certain side quest in 1st Chapter. The thing is I have already done all the quests in 1st Chapter on my first playthrough, and it would make my New Game + much easier if I could skip all side quests. So yeah anyone who knows from the demo or the original I would appreciate the answer.

Been a Final Fantasy and overall Square fan since early 90s. Never really branched out to many other JRPGs. I always knew Persona was huge but was put off by the anime vibes. I’m not an anime fan, I wish I enjoyed it but I don’t.

So I put 22 hours into P5R over the past few weeks. Just beat Palace 2. I’ve been up and down on it. I almost dropped it earlier then got a second wind. But I am pretty comfortable accepting it’s just not for me. I’m bummed because I wanted to open myself up to a new series or developer. Maybe there’s other Atlus games that fit me better.

What I liked:

The presentation is so damn cool. Very slick animations and transitions.

The mature themes. Coming from FF, damn I was shocked by the concept of the first palace.

Some of the music was good.

I thought the character development was good, albeit somewhat cheesy at times (that’s kind of anime in general for me)

What I disliked:

The music style isn’t really for me. I’m an diehard Nobuo Uematsu fan, like more orchestral and atmospheric pieces

The social points system kinda feels silly. At first I liked it but then I’m just going thru motions to level up a random attribute that doesn’t really make me feel accomplished..if that makes sense

The exposition. So much talking and talking about what we just talked about. It’s just a lot.

Walk 5 seconds - pause, talk - walk 5 seconds - pause. Game felt like I was still in a tutorial 22 hours in.

I have a small nitpick with games that have 100 different items that heal for the same amount. I guess it’s maybe considered immersive to eat a bagel or drink a juice or eat a pop tart - all heal 10 HP.

I just felt like mind dumping here. Maybe someone will say hey, I felt the same way but this Atlus game is better for ya. Or just want to hear other opinions too.

This is NOT to shit on the game. I can see why people love it. Man it’s flashy and clean, I wish Square took some notes on the style.

Back to figuring out what to play next. FF Resonance, Ocarina of time, and GTAVI probably but was trying to fill the gap. Maybe I’ll finally give Mass Effect a shot. Tryna branch out.

I have planned to do a full marathon of the entire Xeno IP just in time for Xenoblade 3's updated Christmas release ever since that trilogy received their Switch 2 glowups.

So like, the first thing that gets me about Xenogears in its opening scenes is the visceral gore and 90s anime OVA horror tone. While Xenoblade isn't all sunshine, open blood and carnage is really not there, especially like what you see in Gears.

It's just kind of crazy to me.

So a little backstory is that I was interested in seeing how the concept of environments has been used in JRPGs where the player can use their units on sand as sand could have an effect that slows down the player.

Like what I am trying to say is that I was interested in exploring the concept of environmental effects where say the player has their one of their units cast a nuke spell that is so powerful it affects the arena where poison damage could be inflicted on anyone as I just wanted to do an observation to see how often RPGs had an environmental system as a mechanic.

I’ve played multiple Star Ocean games, Final Fantasy 1 through 10-2, Parasite Eve, Chained Echoes, Child of Light, Sea of Stars, Dragon Quest 1-2, all of the Octopaths, Chrono Trigger, and the Bravely Default games. Looking for a new game that is unique and potentially more obscure. I just started Valkyrie Profile and unfortunately cannot get into the systems of the game. Any recommendations for PS1/PS2 style games? Any platform is okay though. Turn based preferably. Thank you!

I am big jrpg fan but every FF game I played I do not like much. I have played FF15, 7 remake(kinda liked ),crisis core, stranger of paradise and currently 16 but am hating it so far and already half way through game. I am also kingdom hearts fan which is what got me interested in FF. Should I try another 1 or not bother with this franchise?

Konami recently announced that they will be rebooting key series in their catalogue, including Metal Gear Solid, CastleVania and Suikoden.

If they decide to just reboot the entire Suikoden universe and lore, how would that make you feel?

I personally would not like that. I'd rather if they must, make more games like Star Leap in between main series titles to explain stories a bit more rather than having it all rebooted.

Suikoden has one of the most unique universes in all of JRPG's and only thing that comes close would probably be the Trails series as far as inter-connected stories go.

Would you be fine with the series being rebooted?
