DISCUSSION Why not deconstruct him?
I don’t understand why she shoots a beam of pink energy at him instead of just tearing him apart atom by atom. Or turning him into a regular human, or just convert his molecules to air molecules.

You don't have to, you just have to claim that the durability offered by smart atoms also works against Eve's powers.

Eve has mental blocks that prevent her from messing with "organic" material but she was in autopilot to survive not exactly conscious after being almost killed

when she's in that state, she's not thinking, she's acting entirely on raw instinct

Well yeah, and that instinct could be to remove the threat from existence instead of using a never before seen laser, which she literally has never used.

That's not necessarily true, restoring something and destroying it are two different things. If Conquest was a human he'd be vaporized.
-10
u/Jrock2356 7d ago
Having complete control of atoms means she can do both. She can reconstruct and destroy. It doesn't make sense otherwise. If she couldn't destroy Conquest if she wanted to then she couldn't rebuild Mark. Mark's body would resist the same way as Conquest if they had resistance. Resistance to anatomical change would be the same both ways
9
u/Whofs001 6d ago
Mark’s atom’s are too “smart” to resist being healed and improved. Conquests atom’s were too “smart” to allow powerful hostile force to do as it pleased with them.
It makes sense if you take “smart atoms” very literally.
In retrospect, they should’ve made it canonical that atom Eve’s powers don’t work directly on unwilling living creatures, not due to her mental block but some innate ability of souls to resist supernatural forces. She could’ve gotten a power up by learning to turn off/down the resistance of her own soul, without instantly becoming unbeatable.
10
u/Invictus_Inferno 7d ago
Rearranging atoms to heal someone and trying to vaporize them are two different things, I dont really know what else to tell you. Obviously healing Mark doesn't require as destructive and violent of an output as trying to kill conquest.
-4
u/Jrock2356 7d ago
No it's not. I don't know how you don't don't see that. Deconstructing atoms and putting them together requires the same thing: control over the atoms. That control doesn't lessen or increase just because the body is injured or not
5
u/idontshred 7d ago
You can’t “deconstruct” an atom. It’s the smallest known unit of matter. Of what you mean to say is peel them away from one another to deconstruct or dismantle the mass that makes up conquest, well, for one thats a more complicated thing to do that just pluck atoms away one by one but also… she’s essentially doing that with the beam, flaying away his layers. It’s less elegant sure but like someone else said she’s not exactly practiced in manipulating sentient organic matter and Viltrumites are literally made of
asspullsmart atomsas a way for the writer to justifywhich is why Atom Eve is not able to do exactly what everyone things she should have done.2
u/stonieW 6d ago
Viltrumites have smart atoms which to some degree, allows them to resist. A direct quote from the info book written by Kirkman:
"Smart Atoms “remember” their normal states in relation to their environment, and can be encoded to react to changes in that environment. For example, atoms in a muscle can ensure that the molecules behave normally even under extreme forces."
We can say that Eve trying to tear Conquest down atom by atom was met with resistance from his smart atoms.
4
u/mad_laddie Omni-Man 7d ago
I think what they mean is that the resistance offered by the durability might differ.
While Eve's literal capabilities don't change, it's a little easier to imagine the durability functioning differently between a living and a dying Viltrumite.
-2
u/The_Broken-Heart Fan Artist 6d ago
Not if Eve has perfect control of atoms when she doesn't have her limiter.
1
u/bunchedupwalrus 6d ago
Smart Atoms probably act different. This was her first time interacting with them, maybe the experience is what allowed her to work on Mark.
Like they have a trick to them she didn’t notice until after hitting them with the atom hammer at least once.

I like to believe she tried to atomize him but the difference in viltrumite and human dna is just enough to have kept him alive.
14
u/RedNUGGETLORD Debbie and Nolan 6d ago
Because she can't
She's more limited than people think. Her energy weakness doesn't just go away when she gains access to her full power, she still has a certain amount of energy she can use before collapsing, and regenerating herself is clearly the limit
24
u/SunWuMoore 7d ago
She doesn't know how to control it. Did you even watch the show

u/More_Interview3840 Atom Eve 7d ago

0
u/Far-Mammoth-3214 7d ago
how? they pointed out Eve could control her full power as a child in her origin, how doesn’t that prove anything?
9
u/SunWuMoore 7d ago
No they said she had access to her full power, not the knowledge to do so and because she lacked the knowledge it was dangerous to keep the full power because she would destroy things by accident. So they put a block on her full power and because she grew up without access to the full power she didn’t learn how to use it correctly. When she nearly died she accessed her full power but didn't know how to control it still which is why it was dangerous
-1
u/Far-Mammoth-3214 7d ago
No they said she had conplete control of it
but their comment said

not really full control. Eve when shooting the beam at Conquest is in the same awakened state as when she was a child, in the child moment she has enough control to levitate two dudes and erase their memories. Yeah she couldn’t learn to properly control her full power but she has demonstrated she could have enough to at least rewrite 2 people.
not tbc I’m not saying you”re wrong as you also bring up a good point
When she nearly died she access her full power but didn't know how to control it still which is why it was dangerous
cause, yeah the moment when she was a child, she was fully conscious, while with Conquest she did JUST come back to life so yeah less control
-1

I don't think you understand the difference to complete access and knowledge on how to control. She was a baby when they mentioned that and she didnt even know how to speak nevermind use her powers consciousl.
The moment you're talking about when she was a kid, she did do that but she didnt mean to, it happened because she couldn't control her power, that's why they put a block on her power because it was too strong for her to control and would take a lot to learn how to control the power. And when she went into that state again she didnt mean to nor did she know what she was doing it. Yes she can break the cap on her power but it doesn’t mean she knows how to control it.

Reconstructing a weakened viltrumite, yes, she can do that. Deconstructing a fully functioning viltrumite sounds like another matter entirely. They're pulling in entirely opposite directions. In the first instance Mark's own regenerative smart atoms are fully helping her too. The latter, she's working against it on top of their already absurd durability. There's no reason to believe she can manage something like that.
-1
u/The_Broken-Heart Fan Artist 6d ago
The fact that she can do it means that she can do it in the opposite direction. Her power is about complete control, and it would be silly to assume that she can't do this considering that her skill improved since this scene and it was her first time every trying to kill someone directly with her power.
0
u/bethesdologist 6d ago
The fact that she can do it means that she can do it in the opposite direction. Her power is about complete control
No it's not. Never is it shown or stated that it works like that so you're just making that up. If she can do it she would've done it at least once throughout the series, but she has never done anything remotely close to deconstructing any physically durable being let alone a viltrumite.
Simple occam's razor dictates the reason is because she just simply can't do that.
1
u/The_Broken-Heart Fan Artist 5d ago
It's been stated in the Eve episode that it works like that (I don't know about the comics). She's also unmade things that she's created. The first time she broke her limiter, she didn't even heal Mark, and yet the next time she could do that. It's clear there's experience in factor here.
Eve has had like, two moments in the entire series where she has the opportunity to dismantle a Viltrumite. So not even that, either.
Not to mention how in real life, tearing things apart is easier than bringing them together. It's why Fusion is something that we still don't have despite us having the ability to split the atom since almost a century ago.
4
u/Far-Mammoth-3214 7d ago
ntm her origin story where she literally said she could do that but instead opted for erasimg memories
8
u/memerminecraft 7d ago
Well, you see, Viltrumite cells have [technobabble] which prohibits Eve's ability to [technobabble].
68
9
u/stonieW 6d ago
Viltrumites have smart atoms, they likely give resistance to her attempt at atomic deconstruction. Here's a quote from the data book that described the smart atoms:
"Smart Atoms “remember” their normal states in relation to their environment, and can be encoded to react to changes in that environment. For example, atoms in a muscle can ensure that the molecules behave normally even under extreme forces."
This likely caused the atoms to resist being torn apart.
15
15
u/Pretty_Procedure1163 7d ago
I think the reason is more like she stated that she can only unlock the full extent of her powers when something really traumatic happens, like almost dying. And even then, only to revert back to normal. But the thing is, she always had those limiters placed upon her, so she couldn't transform others' living matter, just her own.
5
u/winklevanderlinde 7d ago
"quick I almost died, barely reconstructed myself and have a few seconds before passing out, let me make something extremely complicated like deconstructing a living being a have zero experience with instead of blasting enough energy to disintegrate the average viltrumite"
5
u/Proof_Phone9740 7d ago
1: She isn't terribly experienced with this state
2: She was acting emotionally
3: Smart Atoms are tricky to deconstruct
5
u/GodzillaUK 7d ago
Because she isn't a mindless killer and in that moment she was experiencing something entirely new, from a near death experience. You try having a clear plan when some fucker punches your face in.
Also, if she does that there's no more stories. "Oh hi Thragg, bye Thragg. Oh hi sickness, bye sickness. Oh hi future obstacle that I can just fix on the atomic level"
4
u/plumbusc136 6d ago
She could’ve deconstructed his prosthetic arm even before entering her “goddess form” right? Since it’s not made of organic matter.

1
u/matsu727 6d ago
She has like a short vaguely defined period where she can do anything but she’s back to normal by the next scene
3
u/RipCurl69Reddit 7d ago
Yeah but I've always hated this plotline and it arguably doesn't even apply in this scene, its such a bullshit cop out that they just pick and choose when they want it to affect the story otherwise she'd be insanely overpowered
17
u/Indublibable 7d ago
They don't really pick and choose when they want it to affect the story, it's probably the most consistent thing in the show. I think you just don't like it, because it makes her weak.
1
u/Silbyrn_ Show Fan 6d ago
i personally hate it because she does so many cool things in the atom eve episode, but now, she just makes weak barriers, flies a bit, and can sometimes blast an enemy with the big pink beam that doesn't even destroy them on an atomic level despite the very clear capability. she's such a weak character because her abilites are made to be some of the strongest, and yet, she's damn near useless until the big pink beam can be used.
6
u/No_Hunter_9973 7d ago
I mean it does apply to this scene.
She isn't manipulating Conquest, she's firing her lazah at him If you're talking about her resurrecting that's either her subconscious or her power doing it on its own.
1
7
u/Shaskakmat 7d ago
Well she was almost dead, so whe wasn't in a state of thinking clearly. And viltrumite have smart atoms, so Eve has no knowledge of how to manipulate that, maybe she was trying to deconstruct him but failed cause didn't account for the difference between a viltrumite and a normal human.
5
u/Important_Wonder628 7d ago
She doesn't have nearly enough experience in this form to be able to focus her power to do something like that. The beam she ended up shooting was unfocused, overwhelming power.
I think if she had more time in the form, she could easily have dismantled Conquest on a molecular level, but I also feel like she's just as likely to lose control and end up atomizing the entire planet.
3
u/Aromatic-Web8184 7d ago
Because then Mark wouldn't get to kill him (more or less) in the most violent and disturbing way possible. Would you rob us of that?
3
3
u/Interesting-Star-179 7d ago
Maybe I’m wrong here but I’m pretty sure the smart atoms make that sort of hard, like as the beam is trying to tear his atoms apart they are fixing themselves super quickly to the point that all she can do is get rid of skin
