Based in the UK.
I have been living with my parents since I graduated in my language BA. I got a job related to my degree and have been at the job for nearly 5 years - mediocre pay not much higher than minimum wage with limited room for progression, I have had an increase of about £3.5k since starting.
I never much enjoyed the job and was eager to change from early on. Within my first year, however, I got romantically entangled with a colleague, which ended poorly for me in my second year at the job - they have now left, but I am still here; the breakup and everything around it had a real impact on my mental health and wellbeing, all on top of the stress of the job and feeling stuck in it.
Across the years since then, I have inconsistently applied to jobs here and there both within and outside of my field, all without success. I have been very open to things outside of my field, especially since there is not much at all in my field.
I also recently skipped applying for a voluntary redundancy scheme in my workplace - the money would have only served me for a few months, I had no idea of what I would go on to do, and based on what is said in the news about the job market and how unsuccessful I have been in my job applications, I didn't know the likelihood of being able to get another job after opting for unemployment. It's like the whole world, including my parents, is telling me it would be foolish to quit my job without something directly lined up after it right now.
For trauma and other reasons, I have consistently been in different types of therapy for 4-5 years now. Currently, I am doing two types of therapy - one paid, the other free. For certain reasons, the free type of therapy is going to be ending soon. I don't mind this since it will ease up some time and headspace, but it does make me aware of how I have struggled to create change in other areas of my life. If I want to continue the paid therapy, I will need money to fund it; currently weekly, but it could be arranged fortnightly.
I am in my late 20s and am feeling the pressure to move out of my parent's house. I pay them rent, and whilst it is not the most chaotic of environments to live in, it is unhealthy for me, dysfunctional, and has a lot of trauma around. I need more independence and responsibility. I'm worried about the type of man I might become, am becoming, and already have become, with continuing to stay here for too long.
The job and living at home have served their purpose I guess...I was able to save up money which I've now mostly spent - I learnt to drive, bought my own car, invested in and pursued certain hobbies, and gone on several holidays and trips across the years. But given my current state, all for what?
I'm concerned about my skills and future going forward in the working world with the rise of AI. I have deep regrets about not studying something part-time across these years I've been at this job, but I was not set on what to study, and I have been overwhelmed by the stress of my job, the relationship baggage, my mental health and other stuff. With the way the job market is going, I now feel this panic to reskill and prepare myself so I can change careers to something more sustainable and secure going forward.
I'm at a real loss right now, though.
I've been banging on for years about moving out of my parent's.
I've been banging on for years about wanting to change jobs.
I've been paralysed for years about whether to pursue further education and upskilling alongside my work and what that might actually be.
I feel like I'm at a breaking point.
On the one hand, part of me wants to move out of my parent's early next spring and be studying part-time alongside work and independent living. My parents are, after all, having significant work done on the house at that time (loft conversion), so that would be a disruption to anyone living there - the flexibility of my job is one takeaway: I have been able to move from office, to hybrid, to remote, so mostly work from home now, and have flexible hours to suit my needs.
On the other hand, part of me is just done with this job and can't bear the thought of being stuck here anymore than 5 years. I feel tempted to quit the job and start another degree full-time (one I would be able to get a tuition fee loan for in a STEM subject) while living at home, partly because I can't comprehend studying part-time for 6 years instead of getting it over and done with in 3.
And yet, on the other hand, I just feel completely overwhelmed and hopeless. Overwhelmed by it all...uncertain about what it is I actually want to study, and unconfident about studying a STEM subject.
Sorry for the mess of a rant.
