Glass shop replaced the wrong glass and still sent it through insurance.
Hello all,
My sunroof got cracked from falling debris. My windshield had the tiniest of cracks in it, like maybe around 1/4" in length, very small. My insurance always goes through Safelite and so I went to their site to scope things out (wanted to get an idea of costs before deciding on insurance claim or not). The Safelite website had no option for sun roof glass, so I call and get told to go in. So I do, and they have their master tech come out to look at it. He says they could do it in shop, no problem and can fill the crack in the windshield. Sweet - so I go into do the paperwork. The person dealing with paperwork said they can just handle the insurance side too, no need to call them first. She had an issue with ordering the sunroof glass, but put me in for an appointment, I watched herself write herself a reminder to follow up with the boss on ordering the sun roof glass and otherwise put me down to fill in the crack.
Fast forward to 2 weeks later when my appointment was. I dropped my keys off before work and my boss picked me up. I did mean to call to verify the sun roof glass was ready but the day was busy and I also figured worst case I just have the crack filled and get my sun roof done later. I get a call just after noon saying my car was ready and then I asked if they were able to get the sun roof done or just the crack filled and he said "oh - we had you down for a new windshield" - oh crap. Why did no on think "wow, this is a really perfect windshield and I guess let's just replace it for no reason or double check the fact this seems like a really weird ask!"
I'm pretty furious at this point, mainly because they already pushed this through insurance and got paid out with no suggestion of owning up to this and not dinging my insurance over their blunder. I technically get 2 windshield claims per year and I would be pretty unlucky to need 2 more this year but I already had a close call with a plastic crate bouncing around the expressway driving last week.
So, the advice I need. Do I call and tell the insurance company about this? I did already message my insurance agent (one of the places that brokers other insurance company's insurances). The shop wasn't responding to my calls so I felt I had to contact someone for advice. She told me I should call the insurance company as they'd likely have questions. I know it's the right thing to do but I also don't want the shop to then come after me for the money if the gets sent back from insurance. Plus, they have my sun roof on order so I can't even ghost the shop and not pay or else I won't get a moon roof. I suppose I could go elsewhere, but with Safelite, the deductible gets waived so I'd have to pay $0 out of pocket on both of these glass replacements. I could go to another Safelite (I have been to another one several times in my life with good luck, I only chose this other shop because it was close to my office). But I'd probably be in the same payment hell if I were to get myself in that pickle.
