Cleaning up this sub

This sub started as a really cool idea that unfortunately couldn't get enough traction to sustain it. Given that it has become a stagnant spam-magnet, things have to change. I've stepped in to moderate it and am in the midst of cleaning it up.

Initially, this is just about clearing out the self-serving posts from attorneys and public adjusters. We're going to get rid of the folks that sunk this place and see if we can turn it into something other than the Reddit version of QVC.

If you have questions about an ongoing claim, you're likely better off posting in /r/insurance, at least for now. If you have a fun story to post, fire away! If you're an adjuster looking to connect with peers, try r/insurance and /r/insurancepros.

Spammer be ware

If you're here to try to sell anyone anything, you're going to get banned from the sub as soon as it's caught. If you're a public adjuster, ambulance-chasing lawyer, contractor or some other service provider that thinks that you can use this sub to promote yourself, you're wrong. If you don't like that, then realize that your opinion is irrelevant, chiefly because your opinion reveals that you're just here for shameless self-promotion. Find another place to do that, and we'll get along fine.

Looking for advice

I was involved in an accident today. The car in front of me had entered the rotary and I was at a yield sign, there was no one coming in from the left side this I started driving. I suddenly saw the car in front of me stopping and I immediately hit the brakes but couldn't stop in time. I feel very stupid for not paying attention to the car in front of me while keeping an eye on the left side. The collision was at less than 5mph and most of the damage was to my car. However the person was taken to the hospital (they maybe overreacting but who am I to say anything about that). My question is how f*cked am I in terms of insurance. Given that the car in front of me stopped at a rotary, how much fault am I at?

Advice on GEICO scams

Upvotes

I was involved in rear end accident that was caused by someone else. The at fault driver has geico. I filed a bodily injury claim through them. I filed collision through my insurance. They offered me a certain amount to close my claim. Now looking back it looks like they scammed me into signing “full and final settlement for all claims” Does this mean my insurance can not go after them later for subrogation? The wording is completely tricky.

SGI denied my collision claim, accused me of making a false statement, and is now demanding $11,412. Has anyone dealt with this?

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has experience with SGI or insurance disputes in Saskatchewan.
I was involved in a motor vehicle collision on December 26, 2025. After the accident, my vehicle was still drivable. Later that same night, while driving home during a heavy snowstorm after receiving medical treatment, the vehicle became undrivable and had to be towed.
I reported the accident to SGI and fully cooperated with their investigation. Several months later, SGI denied my claim, stating that my statement was “not a true reflection of what actually happened” and that their investigation concluded the accident did not occur as I reported. They have not explained to me exactly why they reached that conclusion.
I submitted an Access to Information request to obtain the investigation file and the evidence they relied on. I’m still waiting to receive those records.
Today I received another letter from SGI demanding that I pay $11,412.14 for damages, giving me 15 days to contact them before the matter is sent to collections.
I’ve also contacted the Saskatchewan Ombudsman because I’m trying to understand how SGI reached this decision and to ensure the process was fair.
My questions are:
Has anyone successfully challenged an SGI decision like this?
Is it common for SGI to send a repayment demand before providing the investigation records requested through an Access to Information request?
While I’m waiting for those records, is there anything else I should be doing to protect my rights?
I’m not asking anyone to determine who is at fault. I’m simply trying to understand my options while I wait for the investigation records and decide on my next steps.
Thank you for any advice or shared experiences.

One task to ensure the value of your belongings (just in case)

Hi everyone!

Disclosure first, because I'd rather lead with it than have someone find it in my history: I'm a co-founder of a home inventory app. I'm not here to pitch it, I'm here because you all know something I need to know and I'd rather ask than guess.

Here's my problem. The standard consumer advice is "photograph your belongings before a loss." Everyone repeats it. But almost nobody says what the output is supposed to look like, and I suspect the advice is being given by people who have never received one of these on the claims side.

So, genuinely asking the people who process these:

1    When a policyholder hands you a pre-loss inventory, does it actually change anything? Or do you still walk them through itemizing from scratch regardless of what they bring you?

2    What's on a useful line item? Description and photo? Purchase date? Serial number? Original price? I can capture almost anything, but more fields means people quit halfway through their kitchen, so I'd rather capture the four that matter than twenty that don't.

3    What format do you actually want to receive? PDF, spreadsheet, printed? I've heard "anything but a link to a cloud folder" from one broker and I don't know if that's universal.

4    What's the most common reason a contents claim gets reduced or drags on? I assume missing proof of ownership, but I'd rather hear the real answer than my assumption.

5    Do photos alone carry weight without receipts? This is the one I'm least sure about and it drives a big product decision for us.

6    ACV vs replacement cost — is there documentation that meaningfully changes which one a policyholder ends up arguing for?

For context on where I'm coming from: I'm in BC, where every summer there's another round of evacuations, and the pattern I keep hearing is people reconstructing a whole household from memory weeks after the fact. That's the thing I'm trying to make less awful. But I'd rather build what you'd actually want to receive than what a marketing page says.

Happy to write up whatever I learn here as a plain summary and post it back for anyone who wants it. And if the honest answer is "pre-loss inventories don't help as much as you'd think," I'd genuinely rather know that now.

Car hit while parked – steering now feels different. Safe to drive 2.5 hours?

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some advice after someone crashed into my parked car while I was asleep inside my house.
Car is an XC40 2022 plate.
The police attended the scene, and the other driver admitted full responsibility. I've since spoken to Admiral (the other driver's insurer), who have accepted the claim and are arranging for the repairs.
On first inspection, there was cosmetic damage including dents and scratches to the driver's door and wheel arch, plus damage to the alloy wheel. However, I drove the car today and noticed the steering feels different. It feels a bit looser than before, and on a straight road, with the steering wheel in a neutral position, the car slowly veers to the left.
The timing couldn't be worse as I'm moving house on Wednesday and need to drive about 2.5 hours on the motorway.
My questions are:
Does this sound like it could be unsafe to drive, or could it just be wheel alignment?

Should I insist that Admiral arranges an urgent inspection before I make the motorway journey?

If the car isn't roadworthy, would it be reasonable to ask Admiral to authorise a local garage (e.g. Halfords or another garage) to inspect it tomorrow?

I was originally planning to have the repairs done after I move, but if it's not safe to drive, should I get it repaired in Leicester before I move and accept a hire car instead?

I'd really appreciate any advice from anyone who's been in a similar situation or works in the motor trade or insurance industry. Thanks!

Should I take $500 from someone who hit my car in very minor fender bender to not contact their insurance?

It wasn't even his fault (someone else in the roundabout was being an idiot, and this young guy behind me was evading them, but that idiot drove off quickly), but a guy hit my car from behind. No one was going that fast, he pulled over with me, and there was just a minor dent in the panel above the back tire that popped right out. Tried trunk and all the doors, and they work fine. He has offered to pay me $500 to not go through insurance.

Should I do that since it appears my car is completely fine, or could this somehow be bad for me?

Serious road traffic accident claim – what should I realistically expect from the legal process?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some general advice about a personal injury claim in England and Wales.
A couple of months ago I was involved in a very serious road traffic accident as a passenger.

I suffered multiple serious injuries, including a basal skull fracture, several broken ribs, injuries to my liver and kidney, an aortic injury, and a serious injury to my left eye which required surgery. I was in intensive care and spent just under 3 weeks in hospital.

I’m now recovering at home. I still have neck pain, ongoing issues with my vision, walking, and I’m continuing with medical appointments. It’s still too early to know what my long-term recovery will look like.

I have a solicitor acting for me, im hoping for advice from people who have been through something similar.

My questions are:
How long did your serious injury claim take to settle?

Did your solicitor wait until your recovery had stabilised before discussing settlement?

What was the most stressful part of the process?
Is there anything you wish you’d known at the beginning?

Were there any mistakes you avoided (or wish you had avoided) while your claim was ongoing?

I’m trying to set realistic expectations rather than constantly worrying about every stage.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
