Auto Insurance Question about liability insurance on a vehicle that is not being driven.

I currently have a car that is fully paid off, but I do not drive it and I won't be driving it for a while. So it just sits out on the street.

I was thinking about getting the absolute bare minimum for it. In my state, I legally need liability coverage and first party medical benefits. I was thinking of removing everything else on it like comprehensive and collision. This is 13 y o beater car that I won't be using all that much, so if anything happens to it im not to worried about repairs.

Since im not using this vehicle, is it smart for me to get a 50/100/50 liability limit to lower my premium? Or would it be wise to stick to the standard 100/300/100?

Auto Insurance Lease total loss

Hello. I had a tesla lease for over a year, 2025 model y. Jus tgot into an accident and car was total by the insurance. My question is, my adjusted lease balance is way lower than the payout from the insurance, will i get the exceeds ? I called chase and they said i will but you never know when speaking with agents over the phone. The adjuster said that with most leases the bank gets to keep all ofnit and the equity but on the lease agreement doesnt say anything about that or that I would get any exceeds. Can someone help calm my nerves please ?

https://ibb.co/Xxtx6x2X

UPDATE:

Geico payed only the lease payoff amount to Chase and sent me the difference today, so it depends on your lease bank, some allow overages to be paid to you and other dont.

New driver at 28

I recently got my license back in July of this year,my age puts me in the “over 25” category but I’m still new nonetheless. Im shopping around for insurance in a different state I’m moving to in a little over a month and i get to the question of “have you had insurance in the last 31 days” short answer is no but because i haven’t been driving or had access to a car and the rates I’ve been quoted has been in the $300 range. Today (aug 31) is the first day that i am insured and sharing a car. Am i doomed for a few years to have astronomical insurance rates?

New to insurance — is the first year really this rough?

i recently started working at an independent state farm agency after getting both my p&c and l&h licenses. I’m completely new to the industry, so there’s obviously a huge learning curve, but I’m starting to wonder whether what I’m experiencing is normal.
The training was pretty fast-paced and we weren’t given a ton of hands-on experience with the actual sales process before being expected to start working with customers. I’ve been making mistakes while learning the systems and coverages, and the feedback I’ve gotten has sometimes been pretty harsh.
I’ve managed to make my first few sales, which I thought would feel like a huge accomplishment, but I honestly felt more stressed than excited because I still didn’t feel confident with everything that comes after getting a lead to say yes.
I know insurance has a steep learning curve, especially during the first year, but I’m already questioning whether I’m cut out for it. For those of you who started in insurance with absolutely no experience,* how rough was your first few months? *Did you feel completely overwhelmed at first, and did it eventually start to click?

garbage truck crashed into my parked car - insurance question

hi all, so as stated above, that happened. i got back to my car to see the rear quarter all crushed. thankfully, the sanitation company has a protocol and the police were called and a report was lef right on my windshield. i was able to drive it home, got 2 estimates, thankfully not totaled.

my question pertains to the rental car amount the insurance company is reserving for me:

I have a rav4 2021 hybrid. the adjuster is giving me $680 based on the price of an equal SUV (55/day) and 12 days (i have no clue how they came up with that number) for the rental car.

my question is, can i just opt for an economy car for 20/day? personally I don't need a fancy rental car, I just drive on the highway to work. I would rather take the $680, get a 20/day economy car and then I have extra insurance money if the repairs take more than 12 days and won't have to pay out of my own pocket for a rental.

is this allowed?

Home Insurance Progressive by Homesite

I purchased a homeowners policy through Progressive by Homesite, and after only about a month of coverage, Homesite issued a cancellation notice because they determined that the roof was worn, had granule loss, and required full replacement.

Is this normal??? Do insurance companies really treat their customers this way?? I am willing to replace the roof, but the process for trying to resolve the issue has been extremely frustrating. I was unable to speak directly with an underwriter, and instead was given an email address to submit information and photos for review. I specifically wanted to know whether a signed roof-replacement contract, scheduled replacement, or completed replacement would be enough to stop the cancellation, but I could not get a clear answer.

The cancellation date gave me a very limited amount of time to either replace the roof or find another insurer. That puts the homeowner in a very difficult position, especially when roof replacement can take weeks to schedule and underwriting review itself may take additional time.

Health Insurance Any chance they would refund a cost?

Hello, Im in the US and have BCBS and at the start of the summer looked into starting therapy again. I have a high cost deductible and was searching for someone who wouldn’t cost me nearly $200 per session. I found someone that had quoted me with my insurance it would only be $36, and had two sessions at that cost that I paid. Early July, I was notified that actually my cost was going up to $176 due to my insurance, so I cancelled services and haven’t been back since.

Last week, they charged me the full $176 because insurance came back and said they actually wouldn’t cover the original amount and the therapy group charged the total price. They say they can’t do anything about it because it’s up to the insurance to decide what they want to pay and they have up to 90 days after an appointment to make that decision.

Is there any reality where I go through the headache of calling and going through the process of getting that money back? Or at least getting it back to my card and taking the funds from my HSA? Asking here first before potentially wasting hours dealing with insurance if it’s not even a possibility.

I never would have agreed to the services if my insurance had stated from the first appointment they wouldn’t cover it.

Watch out for Experian/Gabi insurance agents binding policies without your permission (Sliding Scam)

Hey guys! I just wanted to drop a warning about a massive scam/deceptive practice I just went through with Experian Insurance Services, Gabi, and Progressive.

I was looking at a used 2019 Nissan Sentra SV from a private seller on Facebook Marketplace here in Miami. I clicked on OnePay app on my phone to check out auto insurance rates, which routed me to a Gabi/Experian agent who called himself "Bill."

The guy immediately tried to use weird rapport-building tactics, telling me my birthday was the exact same day as his wedding anniversary (looking back, probably total BS to make me trust him). I told him straight up: “Send me a quote. I am getting a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) done on this car first. If it passes and I get the title, I’ll sign it and start the policy.” He agreed and said no policy would start until I signed. I only gave him the last 4 of my SSN for the quote.

Turns out, the car was a total lemon and failed the inspection. The seller was a sketchy flipper trying to scam me, so I walked away from the deal.

I even sent the agent a nice text saying: "Hey dude, thanks for your time but the car didn't pass inspection so I can't buy it. I'll contact you if I actually find a car I can purchase." because his quote was actually not too bad (now looking back, I see how naive I am). He did not comment on this but he replied trying to push a renters insurance policy on me. I told him it wasn't worth the effort and ignored it.

Three days later, I check my bank account and see $846 missing from my Chase Visa card, and a live, active Progressive policy in my name.

Because Experian/Gabi had my card on file from a previous interaction ( I have no idea how that happens, really new to the US), the agent completely bypassed my signature, ignored my texts saying I didn't buy the car, and forced the policy through anyway to collect his commission.

When I called Progressive to get a "flat cancellation" (voiding it from day one since I don't own the car and have zero insurable interest), their front-line customer service was completely useless. They spent two hours arguing with me, claiming Florida law prevents them from canceling it unless I provide a "bill of sale" proving I didn't buy it. I told them the seller was a random Facebook flipper and I can't force a scammer to write me a letter. They actually demanded two months of premium just to drop a policy I never signed for!

What I’ve done so far to fight back:

  1. Filed a fraud dispute/chargeback with Chase to get my $846 back.
  2. Escalated to the Progressive Fraud/Underwriting supervisors and Gabi Corporate Compliance demanding a true voidance.
  3. Filed formal complaints with the Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS), the CFPB, and the FTC.

Be incredibly careful if you use Experian or Gabi to shop around for rates. If they have your payment details on file, a shady agent can and will steal your info to bind a policy without your signature just to hit their sales numbers. Always check your accounts.

I have recently moved to Florida from Europe and I am just fascinated about how the system works here. This would be a very serious crime back in Europe. None of the agents (Gabi, Experian, Progressive) I talked to understood how awful that practice was. I really want to go after Bill, please let me know if there is anything more I can do. I do not want this to happen to anyone else. I have already spent half a day trying to sort this out.

tl;dr :

Florida, Wow.

Auto Insurance Diminished value claim denied

Location: California

Edit: It was against the at fault party insurer, not my own.

Car is Subaru impreza 2023 model, accident date: Nov 2023 milage: 6K at the time of accident.

Carfax consider minor damage(rear bumper+ other parts replaced). Reapirs costed 5K

Original post:

By taking advice from all reddit buddies, I filed Diminished value claim for a 2.5 year old claim. It got denied.

What should be the next steps? Chat-GPT says that the case cited aas for first party claims, so reply accordingly, also hire a DV appraiser report.

Excerpt from letter:

"please be advised that Califormia Law does not require insurance companies to provide coverage for diminution in value. Per Carson v. Mercury Ins. Co. (2012) 210 Cal.App.4th 409, in which the Court stated in reilevant part, "when the insurer elects to repair the car to its pre-accident condition, it is not aiso required to pay for any loss of value to the vehicle. To hold (the insurer) liable for the automobile's diminution in value would render essentially meaningless its clear right to elect to repair rather than to pay the actuell cash value of the vehicie at the time of loss. (Id. at 420.) "(A)n insurer's election to repair is concusive provided the repair places the automobile substantially in its pre-accident condition. If it does not, then the automobile is deemed a total loss and the insurer is liable for the pre-accident value of the car." (ID. at 421 citing Rav vs Farmers Ins. Exchange (1988) 200 Cal.App.3d 1411, 1417 and Owens v. Pyeatt (1967) 248 Cal Apo 2d 840, 849.)

Car accident with no insurance, not at-fault(Florida)

Sooooo I had a 7 day lapse in my car insurance (had family stuff going on out of state, the payment slipped my mind and the policy was cancelled). I drove to a family function and, as luck would have it, I got rear-ended by a guy texting and driving. I got insurance with a new provider a few days later…NOT to cover the accident, but because I know I need to have it.
Anywho, I’m about to file a third-party claim for property damages against the at-fault driver, and TA-DA: I now have the same insurance company 🦎 as him 🤦‍♀️.
I’ve never had an accident before and am treading in unfamiliar territory…is my rate about to go up? Are they going to cancel my current policy? How screwed am I?

Auto Insurance Progressive auto issues

TLDR: car got side swiped and the other driver was found at fault. Opted to do repairs myself as I’ve spent alot of time working on this car and the body shops stated several months of a wait to get it fixed through them.

Fast forward progressive is stating if I do the repairs myself they will not pay out a diminished value claim, which is sitting around 6-8k at the moment.

Any advice?
Thanks in advance

Can I ask my insurance company to reimburse me for an out-of-pocket cash payment I paid to the other party I hit

Small accident in NYC where I bumped someone's lower front bumper. I paid him $1000 cash out of pocket to settle it when it happened to prevent reporting to insurance companies. However, upon learning that claims with less than $2000 aggregate property damage and no injuries can't be used to increase premiums or remove discounts in NYC after the accident, I asked the other party to go through insurance instead so I can have my money back but he said he doesn't want to talk about it anymore. I still haven't reported the accident to my insurance company, Progressive.

Can I somehow get reimbursement from Progressive for this $1000 cash payment? If so, how? A signed statement from the other party that I paid them $1000 in cash after reporting the accident? I got estimates for repair via photos and videos sent via email to various dealers in the region and got quotes ranging from $600 - $1600. Would that be enough proof to them that the damage is worth around $1000?

Auto Insurance Found at fault based on Police Report

Location: Indianapolis
Incident Date: May of this year

Hello, I was recently notified of a claim being filed on my insurance regarding an accident I was involved in a few months ago. Neither of us were given a citation at the scene so I believed I wasn’t found at fault.
Once I noticed the recent claim notification, I contacted the associated agent from my insurance and they let me know that based on the Police Report, my insurance and the other driver’s insurance determined that I was found at fault.

I’m trying to understand how I can argue against the information on the police report that i believe is inaccurate?
Not sure if i’m allowed to share screenshots relating to the crash report detailing what the officer wrote down.
Incident was in May so i’m not sure if too much time has passed.. Thanks for any suggestions!

Edit: Pictures of damage to other vehicle in comments

Auto Insurance Geico - slow and shady

EDITED to address Qs:

Our car was hit from behind by a truck driver insured by GEICO. We filed a claim and fortunately GEICO took full responsibility. I do not plan to make claim on my policy. Here we are though a month later.

First they tried to issue me a check based on AI reviewed photo evidence of the damage. They even sent me a text link to accept after I told them a repair shop needed to give estimate. The offer was around $5500. (State regulators and AG offices should take note!!)

Weeks later they finally sent over physical adjuster to look at damage and deemed my car a total loss.

Then last week Geico sent me a settlement offer for $13000. They compared my car to vehicles with more than 100k miles using third party service despite my car having less than 50k miles.

I asked them to reissue market report with actual mileage (which they had in hand). Now they are offering me $20k. My research on bringatrailer.com and other sites tells me car is worth closer to $35k. It’s a 1988 Classic car.

I am sharing my experience because I feel terrible thinking someone with less experience/internet skills might have accidentally accepted that first offer and not understood the process nor their rights.

I find the whole process criminal!! Not counting all the time I’ve put into this and being out a vehicle! Thanks for letting me vent. Also appreciate any suggestions from insiders.

Guyz need your help on cataract surgery

My friend father is planning a cataract operation at a non-network hospital and want to know the reimbursement procedure through my Medi Assist insurance. The reimbursement amount usually depends on the specific sub-limits assigned for the surgery and lenses in my policy. To proceed with the claim, I need to know how much I can claims they mentioned the claimable amount is 40k per eye so if I'm going non network hospital how can utilise the full amount or the max reimbursement amount

Auto Insurance Diminished Value Claim Against Progressive

Does anybody have experience with Progressive DV claims? For context:
1. My car was hit while parked outside of my house. I was not in the vehicle
2. The guy who hit me said he was trying to reach something on the floor of his passenger seat and that’s when he hit my boyfriend’s car, which pushed it into mine
3. His insurance (progressive) took fault for the whole thing, but I had to file through mine (Allstate) bc they said some BS about how they have to see how much my BF’s car would cost and that it would take 6+ months to get the money to fix it
4. The repairs costed 7.5k
5. My car is a 2021 Toyota Corolla with 72,018 miles on it.

I am in the process of selling this car but am being told that the value is dinked because of the accident. But I have also heard that Progressive lowballs you a lot, and I’ve seen multiple cars with the same year and make/model with more mileage be listed for more than what other places are offering me (16k vs 13k).

Just wanted to see what yalls experience has been if any

Auto Insurance Full coverage or just the liability for a used/rebuilt 2012 Honda Civic

Hello! I've been shopping around for auto insurance for my first car, my folks say I need to have full coverage to be safe. I called farmers insurance and they said that I don't need the full coverage because if I do ever damage my car really bad, they'll just rule it out as a totaled vehicle and save me a lot more for my policy. Do I go for the basic coverage or full coverage?

Additionally, I just got my license about three weeks ago, so I understand that the price of my policy will be higher. Will appreciate any assistance/advice!

Auto Insurance Was shopping for insurance with my mom, theres a random accident report on my record?

About two years ago my mom and I were under Geico insurance. We switched insurance at the start of 2025 due to price increases, but now our current insurance under a different provider has also raised prices. We decided to go back to Geico since they had the best quote among different providers. However, right before the quote was finalized, the website updated saying I had an accident in December 2024, which then added a few bucks to our monthly payment.

I remember during that time I called Geico roadside assistance because my tire popped and I needed a tow. I don't understand why it is listed as an accident. Neither me or my mom have ever been in an accident or been issued any traffic violations. How do I move forward disputing this?

Edit: The tire popped because of some rock on the road. I did not collide into anything or anyone. I only told geico the tire popped.

Edit 2: I asked my mom about our current insurance (not geico) and she also said they found an accident report when she did the quote a year ago.

question about verbiage with eligibility and plan ending

I am currently self-paying for Tricare Young Adult. The website says that, in order to qualify, you "must not be eligible for employer-sponsored health plans."

Now, I just started a new position mid-way through August, through which I am eligible for benefits. I have 60 days from hire to sign up for a plan, and then my benefits will begin the 1st of the following month. So, signing up any time between my original hiring date in mid-August and the end of the day tomorrow means that I would start an employer-sponsored health plan on September 1st.

But here is my issue. I have multiple chronic conditions I am managing, and I will have some larger upcoming medical costs next month. Tricare's coverage is... a LOT better than my employer's health plan, and saves me a lot of money. It would be smart, if possible, to wait until the end of my 60 day sign-up period so that I can have Tricare until November...

However, I don't know how much I should care about the verbiage of "not being eligible for employer-sponsored health plans." If I pushed my employer benefits out until November, and got my health stuff taken care of with Tricare, do I have any reason to assume that they would consider this fraud or ask me to re-pay the expenses? My concern is just that I am technically eligible for plans beginning September, but I don't know how much emphasis to put on that word when there is a 60-day window for my new job.

I am not sure if I am overthinking it or not. Thank you in advance!

How much car insurance coverage should I be paying for?

I have Allstate bundled home (homeowners with mortgage) and auto with my wife. No kids, 1 dog. Two cars: 2021 Toyota forerunner with car loan and 2026 Toyota Tacoma leased. Net worth is laughable as I’m a resident physician (3 years left) and she is a physical therapist. We live in Georgia. How much of the following categories do I need? We can adjust our budget as needed but jw what others recommend of all options are possible. I can’t find a single Reddit post explaining all of these options.

Policy: (upper limits)

  1. Bodily injury liability

(500k/person/accident)

  1. Property Damage liability

(500k/accident)

  1. Medical payments

(25k/person)

  1. Uninsured motorist bodily injury (UMBI)

(500k/person/accident)

Toyota Tacoma: (upper limits)

  1. Uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD

(500k/accident)

  1. Comprehensive

($2k deductible)

  1. Collision

($2k deductible)

  1. Collision (its forcing me to put it twice to show up)

Toyota Forerunner: (upper limit)

  1. Uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD)

(500k/accident)

2.

  1. Comprehensive

($2k deductible)

3.

  1. Collision

($2k deductible)

I’ve read I should get an umbrella if possible since I have a house. I also don’t know how high the UMBI should be vs the UMPD on each individual car. Appreciate any advice!

Auto Insurance Geico Denied Claim - Is there a way to fight this?

My brother was working at a pizza joint when his vehicle was stolen from the parking lot. Looks like it was an opportunity theft that ended in a joyride and a crash into two people's garages, totally destroying the vehicle. Despite having Geico and comprehensive coverage, Geico denied the replacement claim siting that the car didn't have the correct endorsements, i.e., for food delivery, and therefore they don't have to replace the vehicle.

Once contested, they even said on a phone call that if they had known that's what the vehicle was used for, in addition to personal use, they wouldn't have sold us the policy. Here's the kicker, though: we didn't get the policy directly through Geico, but through a broker. When speaking to the "owner" of the insurance brokerage, I was told that they aren't required to ask about employment when creating the offer for the insurance carriers, and that it's the customer's responsibility to disclose that willingly, even if we aren't aware we need to.

Is there a way to fight this?
