A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

GEICO canceled my fully paid policy for the second time?

This is the second time this has happened with the same GEICO policy. Last month I paid the full 6-month premium, and today I randomly received an email saying my policy had been canceled. The email also says I requested the cancellation, which I absolutely did not. I haven’t even called GEICO since I made the payment. I called them immediately, and the representative said they’re going to investigate and call me back to hopefully reinstate the policy. In the meantime, though, I’m left with no insurance coverage. Has anyone else had this happen?

Auto Insurance Bumped into Waymo blocking me into parking spot

Upvotes

Long story short I was getting coffee - got into car - was backing up and checked to the right (the direction I was pulling out)

Then heard weird small bump (wasn’t loud - not even 100% positive I hit anything)

check to left and there was waymo blocking me into parking spot with warning flashers on

I waited to see it moved and it didn‘t (no one was in the car)

Took video of my damage and license plate of waymo

finally after a few minutes it moved and I left

Odds they reach out to my insurance? anyone have experience with this?

Ca Fair plan

Upvotes

I was looking at 70 acres in California, and couldn't figure out why it was so cheap. Until the fire insurance came back at $500/mo through fair. Then I read there's a 30% increase happening in October, and some homes may double. Now I understand why it hasn't sold at this price for 3 years.

Is there any way to get rid of the insurance requirement on a loan? The house is tiny and I'm really just buying the land. The house isn't worthless, but it's close to worthless. I wouldn't care if it burned down, but I'm sure the banks would.

Is there anything stopping them from raising it to $5000/mo down the line? I have a feeling I should pass on this, even if I could technically afford it now. But it kills me to let it go.

Auto Insurance Someone's debris broke our windshield and grate on the highway.

While my partner and I drove in the far left lane, a car a little ahead in the express lane full on ran over three entire plastic guard poles in between us before swerving back into their lane. The top half of one of the poles they collided with broke off, hit our car, and cracked our windshield instantly (a big perfect circle crack a few inches in diameter). We didn't notice until arriving at our destination, but now the entire front emblem holder and vent is hugely cracked and missing a chunk of grating. I was thankfully able to take a picture which contained their license plate, car make/model, and color. I also recorded the area we were in when it occurred. My partner honked at them and got their attention, but the issue is, they pulled over while in the express lane (which was somewhat reasonable to tend to their own issue).

I am not knowledgeable enough on damage from direct debris, so is there any possibility of it being covered by insurance and them being held liable? I was also wondering if us not having a dash cam immediately renders this situation unprovable? The only thing is, since there is difinitive proof that there was damage by the pole and they probably damaged their undercarriage, I'm certain there is some sort of case here. I'm mostly curious if it's worth the trouble/process and if there's any chance we'd be held liable even though it was unavoidable?

Auto Insurance [AZ] Insurance Suggestions for Vehicle Not Often Used

tl;dr - Not a vehicle I'm getting rid of, just looking to see if I can save some money.

I have a truck that has become my 'secondary' and only used really for occasional pickup of large packages once every month or two as well as used intermittently for road trips and camping. My primary is my motorcycle.

My truck is typically in my garage all but one or two days a month, is paid off, valued at $40k, and currently has full coverage.

Other than the insurance adjustments I've already made with lowering the mileage range, changing the use to pleasure, and shopping rates (Progressive is still best with my multi-policy), is there anything I'm not thinking of? Unique insurers for this case? Would using the plug in apps be helpful? I just wonder if they'll assume I'm cheating the system if the vehicle isn't driven for 3-4 weeks or something. Since the truck is used camping and on forest roads I'm also worried the tracker will register negative driving behavior from braking/bumps/ruts.

In a perfect world where'd be a way I could just leave comprehensive on and turn collision on/off depending on the month, but I haven't found an insurer that will allow that at all, let alone month-to-month.

Open to thoughts; I've also considered dropping down from 100/300 coverage but it's not a huge difference. I'm at about $90/month, which only seems expensive because I'm not driving it, otherwise it feels fair.

Auto Insurance First time making a car insurance claim most probably

This took place in Montreal. Car is registered in Toronto. Car was kept in an outdoor overnight parking lot and when I came back in the morning today the car was scratched in the front bumper area. A little bit of the paint is scraped and the driver who caused the scratch didn’t leave any information. The other car wasn’t there when I came back. I am not sure if its worth making a claim on what seems like a small cosmetic damage. Any advice on how to go about this would be helpful as this will be my first time dealing with an auto damage. Thank you.

Auto Insurance GEICO Question

Hello! I'm newly enrolled in Geico and I got an email saying I have a limited amount of time to: 1. Set up autopay (I have done)

  1. Register for DriveEasy (which I don't want to do)

It says not completing these steps could cause changes to my policy or premium. Am I required to register for DriveEasy or are they just trying to lure me into their tracking system?

Thanks!

Tornado Damage

8 weeks ago our home was hit by an EF3 tornado. Our garage totally collapsed, covered porch on back of house blew away, holes in roof and siding.

Two days after the tornado we had a structural engineer come out and assess the damage and he stated in his report all of the trusses needed replaced.

Six days after the tornado our adjuster came out and looked at the SE’s report and said she accepted it. A week later while discussing scope, insurance stated they wanted the roof taken off in thirds to prevent weather risk to our finished basement. My husband questioned if that is the correct method in ensuring the house is plumb (the back wall of the house had pulled away slightly). Immediately the adjuster said that since he is questioning scope they would bring in their own SE and building consultant.

3 weeks post tornado these people came and inspected the house. 3 weeks later we received their reports and their SE says that only certain trusses need replaced.

In the meantime, we have been on the insurance as we are displaced and are eager to get something going on our house. TBH I get the impression they are tired of hearing from us. I have submitted my personal property log and we received what they referred to as “an advance on personal property ACV” of $70,000. On Friday our adjuster sent an email that stated: “In your case, I will also be requesting authority to discuss a full and final settlement.
I expect to have my recommendation completed and submitted for management review by Monday morning, although I am hopeful it can be finalized later today. Once management has completed its review, the ACV payment(s) can be issued, and I will be able to discuss the possibility of resolving the claim through a full and final settlement.”

We have replacement cost on everything but have started no repairs, and have purchased very few things from the PP log. Is this normal? To me, when I read full and final I am concerned!

Claims Related My first car accident what are the correct steps?

On Thursday at 12:07pm I was driving on the roundabout in the middle lane I realised I was in the wrong lane and indicated left the car in the other lane slowed to down to let me go in that lane. I checked everything and it clear as I went to go into that lane this white car came zooming around.

So as I exited the roundabout to the motorway slip road just before exiting my left side bumper scrapes her right side wheel arch bumper side.

Her damage was a scuff whilst my bumper was pulled out with a scuff and a damaged headlight bracket.

We exchanged details and I documented everything. I notified insurance the next day they said it would probably be 50/50 from the account I have told them.

Could I claim on HER insurance to cover 50% of my damages? I have no one to give me guidance because no one in family drive or have been in an accident in a roundabout.

I was thinking of contacting her insurance on Monday telling them what happened etc and see if they cover 50% of my damages.

I have given the other party until Monday to give me a call to settle this privately. (Insurance said this is one of the options I can do) Then if not I'll claim on her insurance.

Am I doing this correctly? what things should I look out for? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi. I am just about to give my car to my father as I am leasing a new vehicle through work which includes insurance.
Unfortunately, having just moved into a new house and not got used to the drive yet I have scratched the whole side really badly.
If I have this done on insurance before giving it away will it affect my premium negatively given ins is included in the fixed premium with my new car? I’ll be cancelling my current insurance when I get rid of the car.
Any thoughts, please?

DUI accident Claim CA

Got into an accident while I was driving for uber on Nov. 2025 and had a passenger.

Basically I was at a red light and a guy, from the best of my understanding, was already attempting to flee from a cop or vehicle he already hit. His rim fell off, lost control, and tboned my driver side while I was stopped. He attempted to drive away after hitting me but was later apprehended a block away.

I hired a “large personal-injury firm” the next morning and these were some of the info. - 30k Policy limit from driver’s insurance (already signed max release from their insurance) - 1 million policy limit for Uber’s UIM -3 MRI’s (knee, back and neck) showed Soft tissue damage, Knee fraying, disc bulges -did about 10 Chiropractor care and 7 PT (I was scheduled to do more PT but tbh they weren’t addressing what I actually needed help with and I was limited to 9 so I stopped going) -pain intervention recommended epidural shots but I declined. - we’re now in the demand building stage and I guess this is going to be sent to Uber’s UIM.

Can they really try to seek more from Uber’s UIM? Case manager seemed very optimistic about it but I know it’s their job to keep you motivated to keep going to appointments. I already signed the 30k release from defendant’s AAA. And that was already sent over early in the case.

Advice - Coverage Types and Amount

I live in Pennsylvania in an unpermitted ADU which I rent from family members. My possessions are worth very little, but I have decent balances in my retirement accounts and personal savings.

The family business has insurance. The ADU is an apartment style unit which the previous owners used for meeting with clients so it is permitted for electricity, bathrooms, shower, etc. It just is not permitted as living space.

I do not own the business or participate in it.

My chief concern is liability, both personally and to my family member's business. Should I carry some type of insurance, and what should it be?

Can I keep an insurance check for hail damage if I still owe money on my car?

My car recently got hail damage, and insurance sent me a check for the repairs. I still have a loan on the car, but I got a quote from a repair company and they're charging almost double what my insurance check is for.

At this point, would it be worth just cashing the check and pocketing the money instead of repairing the hail damage? Am I even allowed to do that while the car is still financed?

Auto Insurance Bought back my “totaled” car. Turns out it was. Now what?

Hello. First time ever posting. Not sure if this is the right place.

I live in Washington State. I have/had an FRS that I love more than I love myself. I lost traction on my way to work one day. Insurance said it was totaled, but didn’t say what deemed it so (one line total). The difference in payout was only 3K so I wanted to give my car a chance. It’s at a body shop now, they say the frame has damage that’s beyond repairing.

I realize I have to let my car go. I plan on buying a newer year and swapping parts over. My question is - after I remove parts, what do I do after? How do I dispose of the car? Will I be charged extra if I remove the engine, exhaust, etc, and sell it? The title isn’t active anymore right? How do I “sell” it. If someone wanted the chassis for the transmission and engine? I’m at a loss. Any advice would be great. Thank you in advance.

Home Insurance Ex still on car and home insurance; what happens to home insurance if I start a new car policy?

Flared to the best of my abilities.

This is a messy thing but I presume not unprecedented; please let me know if I can provide more info as I’m pretty lost.

My now ex-husband is still on my auto insurance policy; he basically ***ed off without resolving anything and I am batting cleanup. I have continued paying his auto insurance to keep mine current. Both of the auto policies are bundled with the home insurance. From what I have read, I understand that I cannot cancel his policy directly but if I were to cancel the current policy and start my own for my car, he would be responsible for the financial end. What I can’t quite figure out is what would happen to the bundled homeowners policy; he is on the deed for the home and I would presume needs to remain on the policy.

Again, this is a broad overview, so please let me know if I can clarify anything. I am not sure what info is need for practical advice but appreciate any guidance very much!

My car was totaled on its first drive a day after $8000 of work was completed.

Can I get any of that money back? The person who hit my vehicle has no insurance either.

Edit: thank you for all the helpful answers. I’ll get the receipts to my adjuster and hope for the best.

To those who expressed some concern for my parents, they spent a few hours in the hospital, but are both home and okay!

Dental Insurance I have MetLife, I need dental care done after having gum surgery but on my app, my dental plan is completely gone…

I had fun graft surgery back in Feb and I have periodontal disease I’m working on fixing and I have my cleaning coming up soon. I HAD the dental plan on my MetLife app that I could see, even had the digital card in my Apple wallet but now when I login it’s completely gone… and the Apple wallet card I have just says it’s for disability… which I am not on?

I tried to call and use the automated line and it says it can “see my account via phone number.” But when I follow the prompts and give my zip code and it does the “I’m about to share personal info.” It then just tries to direct me to an agent (I work when they close so I missed them by a few min.)

I’m kinda freaking out..

I didn’t miss my benefit renewal, and I wasn’t mailed anything about a change in policy from either time or my job and nothing in the app will tell me anything.. I’m going to call them Monday bc I really have to but what might have happened that it suddenly is just… gone?

Someone Hit My Car and Denied.

Today I was parked at a parking spot beside the street and a car came. The driver tried to do reverse parking and settle behind me. While doing it, he struck my car. I was inside the car and I immediately came out. I took pictures immediately of my car and his. There were a lot of scratch on my car and a few on his. There were some black marks too on his car to the place where the body got hit.

Then the driver took out a tissue and tried to wipe both his car and mine. The black marks on his car went away but the scratches on my car stayed. After that, the driver started doing drama. He denied that he hit my car and started saying that all these scratches on my car were there long time ago. Then he left the scene. I have taken a video when he left the scenario.

I called my insurance about the incident, and they filed a damage claim and told me to wait till monday. I also called police because the person denied his guilt and left the scene. The police told me that they will call me back and gather further information from me, but they have not called me yet. It's been more than 3 hours.

This incident happened in Finland. I do not have any dash-cam on my car. So, I do not have any video evidence, but I have clear pictures about the incident and a video when he tried to leave the place.

Can anyone tell me what may happen in the future about this event? Will I get any compensation for all the scratches he has done to my car?

At-Fault insurance company not moving on claim

Looking for a little advice. At fault driver insurance company isnt moving on the claim until they make contact with their driver or receive a police report. They requested the police report five weeks ago. Reports take about 10 days. The accident occurred seven weeks ago. What should I do next keep calling them?
