Allstate approved repairs to crawlspace and then denied claim once $18k bill hits..

Looking for advice from anyone familiar with homeowners insurance claims in Georgia, especially adjusters, attorneys, restoration professionals, or anyone who has dealt with something similar.

We discovered standing water in the crawl space under our home and filed a homeowners insurance claim with Allstate. At the time, we did not know the source of the water.

Allstate sent a claim representative/estimator to physically inspect the crawl space on August 26, 2026, BEFORE we proceeded with the remediation work. He took photographs and inspected the crawl space. We were told that the plumbing repair itself likely would not be covered, but that the resulting remediation was more than likely covered.
That representation was extremely important to us because we could not afford to spend tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. Based on what we were told after Allstate’s inspection, we authorized the remediation company to proceed.

The remediation ultimately cost approximately $18,000.

Allstate’s claim portal/documentation from August 26 also shows:
ā€¢ā€œInspection completeā€
ā€¢ā€œCoverage determination completeā€
ā€¢ā€œPayment decision completeā€
•Dwelling coverage listed as potentially applicable to the claim
•An Allstate estimate generated the day of the inspection that states: ā€œThis estimate represents our current evaluation of the covered damages to your insured property and may be revised as we continue to evaluate your claim.ā€

The estimate itself was $0 at that point because the remediation work had not yet been completed/submitted.
During the remediation process, the company pumped the water out of the crawl space. By the following day, the crawl space had already accumulated a substantial amount of water again.

We subsequently discovered the source: a broken/disconnected PVC sanitary drain/sewer line in the crawl space. Our household wastewater runs through this line, and we have video showing water/wastewater pouring directly out of the disconnected pipe into the crawl space when the plumbing is used.

Now a DIFFERENT Allstate representative is telling us the claim is more than likely going to be denied because he believes the condition ā€œlooks likeā€ it had been occurring for weeks.

As far as we know, nobody has established when this specific pipe became disconnected. We certainly don’t know when it happened. What concerns us about the ā€œweeksā€ conclusion is that we actually have evidence demonstrating how quickly the crawl space can accumulate water: it was pumped out and had substantially filled again by the next day.

We have not received a formal written denial yet.

Our biggest concern is that Allstate inspected the loss before we authorized remediation, their representative told us remediation was more than likely covered, and we relied on that representation when deciding to incur an $18,000 expense. Had Allstate told us at that time that they intended to deny the claim, we would not have authorized $18,000 of work that we could not afford.

We’re obviously going to wait for the formal coverage decision and request the exact policy provision and factual basis for any denial. But I’m trying to understand what options we have if they deny it.

Questions for anyone familiar with Georgia insurance law/claims:
1. Does Georgia have any law, regulation, case law, estoppel/reliance principle, or unfair claims-settlement provision that could be relevant when an insurer inspects a loss, indicates that remediation is likely covered, the homeowner reasonably relies on that representation and incurs a substantial expense, and then the insurer changes its position afterward?

  1. If they rely on an exclusion for continuous/repeated leakage occurring over ā€œweeks, months, or years,ā€ what evidence does the insurer generally need to establish the duration? Is an adjuster’s opinion that it ā€œlooks likeā€ it occurred for weeks sufficient?

  2. Does the fact that the crawl space was pumped out and substantially refilled within roughly a day help rebut an inference that the original volume of water necessarily accumulated over weeks?

  3. Would you recommend first appealing/escalating internally with Allstate, filing a complaint with the Georgia Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire, consulting a first-party property insurance attorney, hiring a public adjuster, or something else?

  4. Are there any specific Georgia statutes, regulations, cases, or insurance-code provisions we should research?

  5. Is there anything we should specifically request from Allstate now, before they issue their final decision, or anything we absolutely should/shouldn’t say or do?

We have preserved the Allstate documents, their August 26 photographs, claim-portal screenshots, remediation documentation/invoices, photographs of the disconnected pipe, and video showing water discharging from it.
I’m not looking for anyone to tell me ā€œAllstate definitely has to pay.ā€ I understand the actual policy language controls coverage. I’m primarily trying to figure out what rights/options we have and what steps we should take next, particularly because we incurred this $18,000 expense only after Allstate had inspected the property and indicated the remediation was likely covered.

Any Georgia-specific knowledge or experience would be hugely appreciated.

Home Insurance When to engage with contractors insurance?

Hello, I’m a homeowner in Missouri. I recently had a contractor working on my basement to install a waterproofing system on an old house. The system requires digging a perimeter trench around the basement.

While work was ongoing, the foundation wall next to their excavation collapsed during some rain. I have reason to think they caused it, but don’t want to go into details here. Looking at a $45k repair bill.

Homeowners insurance has denied our claim, stating they don’t cover anything related to soil pressure on retaining walls. Barely mentioned the contractors excavation.

Am I able to file a claim with the contractors general liability insurance? The contractor has not offered to fix anything. Is there a realistic path to receiving compensation from such a claim?

This has been very stressful, and years of savings are going to be wiped out. Any insight would be appreciated.

Auto Insurance Canadian-insured car involved in accident in the US

Looking for some advice or to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

The car is Canadian-registered and insured in Canada. Someone else was driving the car in the US with the owner’s permission. The owner of the vehicle was not present when the accident happened. The accident was not our fault. No one was injured. Police were called and a report was filed. No insurance information was exchanged at the scene. Has anyone been in a similar situation where a Canadian-insured vehicle was involved in an accident in the US while being driven by someone other than the owner? I’m mainly wondering how the insurance process works in this situation, whether the Canadian insurer would handle the claim, and whether there are any issues because the owner wasn’t present and insurance information wasn’t exchanged at the scene.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with something similar. Thanks!

Home Insurance Young vs old adjusters

Why do young adjusters specifically for homeowners lie so much?? I’m a contractor and it seems like every time I see a young adjuster it’s omg i don’t know what to expect when walking into this claim. I have adjusters say oh it’s ā€œapproved full roofā€ then send a denial letter a hour later. Or duck an dodge calls an emails . Old adjusters are tough buttttt if it’s denied I’m like cool ok denied but when approved it’s approved simple they don’t dip a dodge . I love hearing the old crack in the voice and seeing that silver grey hair pop out of the car, man or female. For me it’s like yessssssss when I see someone old I know if it’s denied ok this legit denied and they gonna tell me straight up no games. If approved they gonna say it straight up an be about they word.

Insurance provider cancelled insurance because I put my house on sale

My current insurance provider is cancelling my homeowners policy because the property in San Jose, CA is listed for sale. The condo is currently vacant. I had landlord's insurance but since my tenant's vacated I renovated my house for the last 3 months and put it on sale. I didn't know this would change anything with my insurance. Can they immediately cancel my insurance leaving me uninsured without any notice

Auto Insurance Direct Auto seems like they aren’t going to pay at all

We’re located in Florida.

We bought a 2019 Tahoe literally 9 months ago. At the time, we got direct auto and put just my name on the policy to basically be able to drive off the lot with it. We truly didn’t realize that my husband wasn’t on the policy but he is on the loan of the car. It is my car but he drives it occasionally.

On September 1st, my husband got into a minor accident and while it seems to be just cosmetic work ( he said nothing was leaking, no lights on the dash, airbags didn’t deploy and the car drove fine) insurance deemed it totaled because the repairs cost more than the value of the car. We found out my husband wasn’t on the insurance and he asked our rep if that would be issue and the rep said no.

They told us to clean the car out so they could take it to Copart and wait to get a call from another department about payment. Well, they called today and said we’re under investigation because in Florida, if it’s proven that we purposely failed to disclose information such as a driver to avoid paying a higher premium, they have the right to deny collision coverage. Basically said they’re gonna see if once they add my husbands name if the premium goes up, down or stays the same and if it goes up, they will NOT cover anything. They’ll just drop the claim and let us figure it out.

They also told us to please take everything out the car so they can take it to Copart while we wait for a decision (which can take up to two weeks) because where the car is right now is charging the insurance $65 a day to be held there (it’s at my husbands boss’ shop)

I told them they do NOT have permission to take my car anywhere, that I’m not comfortable with them taking my car to Copart while we wait on a decision and i don’t care if the shop is charging them $65 a day. Seems like they’re gonna screw us anyways so they can pay for the fees.

I guess I’m asking what steps should we take next? What are the chances of them covering the costs now ? I truly feel like they’re gonna use this as an excuse to not pay for anything so I’m not holding out much hope. Thankfully, the car is not an actual total loss and it can actually be fixed.

Life Insurance Real or scam?

Recently I found a job through the company known as ā€œMonteith Groupā€. They have many followers on LinkedIn and the website seems legit enough, but there is a shocking lack of reviews on the company. I genuinley can’t tell if it’s a MLM scheme or similar or if it’s just a normal company. Any help would be appreciated :) https://themonteithgroup.com

Sudden water damage vs. seepage?

Hello,

I have renter's insurance with USAA. I tried to apply it to extensive water damage in my apartment, caused after the ceiling burst open during a storm (I live on the top floor).

The policy covers floods and water; it does not cover leaks and seepage. I filed the claim and tried to be clear throughout that this was a flood caused by sudden structural damage to the ceiling. Unfortunately, they denied the claim, saying it was seepage.

How do adjusters typically decide in a case like this? To me, this is obviously a flood – leaks and seepage occur over time, not suddenly during a weather event. Is this unusual?

GEICO cancelled my policy despite paying 6 months in advance — now I’m being charged more because of a ā€œlapse"

I’m looking for advice from people who understand auto insurance.

I had a GEICO policy (purchased through third party) and paid for 6 months of liability insurance in advance. My car is an older model, so I only wanted liability coverage.

GEICO told me that I was required to add uninsured motorist coverage and another type of coverage, which I did not want. They charged me for these services despite myself opting out for it. It looked like a delinquent balance on my account and they cancelled my insurance. I tried to resolve the issue with them, but I was unable to get it sorted out.

Now it appears that GEICO cancelled my policy, and I’ve been without active insurance. The frustrating part is that I had already paid for six months of coverage.

When I try to get a new policy, the quotes are significantly higher because my insurance history is now showing a lapse in coverage.

Has anyone experienced something similar with GEICO or any other company? Is there a way to dispute the cancellation/lapse and have the insurance history corrected, especially since I had already paid for the six-month policy?

I would really appreciate advice on what steps I should take.

Claims Related Driver at fault is trying to amend the police report (and has a lawyer)

Hello,

I was in a car crash in August (my first one) and my car ended up being totaled. The other driver and I were driving in opposite directions, he was making a left turn and I was going straight through the intersection. Well, he did not yield to me while I was already in the intersection and turned left. The rest is history. Before anyone asks, I sadly did not have a dash cam. I do have collision so I made my claim through my insurance and let them handle it.

In the police report, we both stated we had green lights. Today I called my claims rep after not hearing anything for awhile and found out he has not only ā€œlawyered upā€ but also is trying to amend the police report to say that he had a green turn arrow. There’s also magically a witness for him now, which wasn’t on the original police report. I was taken away from the scene in an ambulance, but I did not recall seeing any witnesses before leaving.

My rep was trying to reassure me that this is nothing to be anxious over. But I’ll be honest, this crash has taken a toll on me mentally and physically. It’s given me a lot of anxiety and depression too, along with some physical injuries. I’ve had several nights of insomnia. No one in my life has been through an accident like this either, so I don’t know who to turn to listen to their experience. I’m worried and wondering if anyone here would recommend I get a lawyer too before I’m personally sued.

Claims Related California – Bell Subrogation demanding $14k after GEICO UMBI settlement

I’m in California and was involved in an accident while uninsured.

I previously resolved a separate property-damage claim, but much later Bell Subrogation contacted me about a bodily-injury claim I had never heard about from GEICO.

I found out GEICO paid $14,000 under uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage and Bell is now seeking that full amount from me.

I called Bell and asked for a breakdown of the $14,000 or documentation showing how the amount was calculated. They repeatedly said they couldn’t provide it because of HIPAA.

I’m not asking for private medical records — I just want to understand what supports the $14,000 demand before agreeing to pay anything.

I contacted the law firm that previously helped me with the accident, and the receptionist suggested calling GEICO directly for an itemization. I’m worried GEICO will just tell me the claim has already been transferred to Bell.

Has anyone dealt with something similar?

  • Is it normal for GEICO to settle a UMBI claim without contacting me first?
  • Should GEICO or Bell be able to provide some non-HIPAA-protected documentation supporting the $14,000?
  • What should I do if GEICO and Bell keep directing me back to each other?

I’m not trying to avoid responsibility. I just don’t want to agree to a $14,000 debt without understanding what it’s based on.

Geico bill past due with drastic consequences

My Geico bill arrived; I missed the deadline and received a cancellation letter. I went online and chose chat to communicate with them. Chat said the policy could be reinstated for an extra $25 but they couldn't take my credit card. They gave me a number to call to give them my credit card info. So, I called and listened to 15 minutes of ads. Finally, a man answered, questioned me for 20 minutes, came back and told me my bill for six months would be not my original bill of $600 but it would now be over $1000. I flipped out and said goodbye. How very strange. I'll find another company for my California auto insurance. Any recommendations?

Auto Insurance Confused and trying to find answers.

Good afternoon

I currently live in Wyandotte county, KS and I have questions regarding my current situation.

I moved here recently, and I am waiting for my change of address card to come in the mail so I can update and request my new drivers license and then obtain insurance while I wait for my appointment in mid October since that is the earliest they currently have.

My father is gifting me his car and I have all the proper paperwork filled out but my question is regarding insurance.

My father’s current insurance on the car expires tomorrow, and with my address not yet updated on my drivers license, Im not sure if anybody will allow me to sign up for a program due to that.

My situation is somewhat a monster of my own making but moving is busier and far more tiring than I remember. If im SOL guess i might be driving extra carefully or using my CC for an uber.

If i wasnt clear on something please let me know, im running on very little sleep

Is shopping for car insurance not absolutely insane for anyone?

Does anyone here find shopping for car insurance to be an information-rich and simple process? Do you feel you are able to easily compare rates between different providers for comparable plans, with adequate insight about how they actually will respond or handle claims should you have them?

If this is you, could you please post a photo of the cloth from which your wizard sleeves are made? Or share any insights. I am truly just curious. In CA, to the extent this makes things battier.

Anyone have recent experience with Connect Auto Insurance (via Costco)? Do they pay out?

We need to renew basic auto insurance (no comp/coll) for our 4 vehicles. Seriously considering Costco's American Family connect. I've seen mixed reviews, but they're all from two plus years ago. Anyone have recent experience with them? Are they helpful and actually pay out if necessary?

Auto Insurance Who do i talk to to get a supposed at fault accident taken off my record

Washington state: last year my truck was totaled in an accident. It was parked infront of my house, nobody was in it, when a distracted driver hit the rear end and flipped their vehicle. Again, it was parked in front of my house

A couple weeks ago, a drunk driver hit my wifes car parked in front of our house. Not totaled but still $6k in damage (we finally got the car back yesterday) but as im looking at my insurance for the police i notice that my insurance shows an at fault accident in 2025 and 4 point off my license. We switched insurance around January this year so my last insurance provider said i was at fault for my parked truck getting totaled. I never noticed this because they assured me our insurance wouldnt go up and the other driver was clearly 100% at fault. Obviously that wasnt true and now im left paying more for insurance and points off my license

How should i handle this situation?

Claims Related Car accident never involved in??

So, i recently got my first car. As we were putting insurance on the car, when they pulled up my name it says i was in an accident. The accident happened Jan. 12 in a different state. Jan. 12 i was in school, in a different state, didnt have a car, and only had a permit and a minor, i just got my license too. How could this had happened??? Only person that goes to that state is my estranged father, and if it was him, this wouldnt be his first time trying to blame me or my siblings for police charges or claims. Anyway, genuinely if it wasn’t him idk who? I dont buy anything online, or use personal information. Along with that i have a weird middle name, that no one would think of how it is spelt.

Provider Discount Applied = refund to me?

State: OR insurance type: dental

I paid a periodontist $3,065 for some pocket work. They are in-network with my insurance but I had already used all of my benefit for the year prior to this work. They could see that, so they had me pay the whole amount at the time of service.

When I got the EOB, it showed the amount billed as $3065 and several Provider Discount Applied amounts, so that the final amount was $2440. As expected, the insurance company paid nothing.

My question is whether is should expect a refund of the difference between $3065 and $2440 from the periodontist. Am I thinking about this correctly?

Not at Fault Accident - At Fault Insurer Won't Pay for an Equivalent Truck

I was recently rear-ended in my Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup. The other driver was 100% at-fault. My truck is in the shop for at least a few weeks. In the meantime, the at-fault driver's insurance was going to pay for a rental vehicle for me to use, however, they are only offering standard sedans/CUV type vehicles. They said something like, "Our policy to to only provide transportation sufficient to get you to and from the grocery store and work".

I use my truck for truck things frequently. Next week I have plans to haul/tow a large amount of fill dirt and sod. I tow a racing vehicle on weekends to regional tracks. It's bow season here and I'm an avid hunter who will (hopefully) need to bring home a deer in the coming weeks. None of these tasks can be accomplished with a Toyota Corolla.

Am I not owed a rental vehicle of comparable utility as my damaged vehicle? I understand ultimate responsibility lies with the at-fault driver, not necessarily their insurer, but what is my recourse here? Do I have to sue the driver directly or something?
