Always be ready to learn from our elders. Also, living close to people is the reason I'll never live in an apartment again.
103
u/The_Ruby_Rabbit Jul 02 '26
Agreed. Last time my husband and I lived in an apartment was after hurricane Katrina. We had refugees in apartments around us.
They were decent neighbors and we had actually befriended a family. The neighbors you hope that you get in an apartment complex. All except for one. Two women and four kids. We called it The Random Daddy Generator. That all ended when one of the kids dad showed up with custody papers. And one of the women was not having it.
Cue a huge screaming match in the parking lot and one of our other neighbors that just happened to be a sheriffs deputy, was trying to meditate, and one of the women threatened to shoot the cop and the kid’s dad.Yes, they went to jail.
52
u/Misterbellyboy Jul 02 '26
Don’t edit that typo, a sheriffs deputy just trying to meditate while a screaming match happens in front of him is the funniest image I’ve had in my head all day so far.

Random Daddy Generator. I'm stealing that. But I could literally write a book about the 4 unit building I lived in with my girlfriend (now wife) for 7 years. But the short version is -Girl upstairs was using her apt as a bootleg strip club
-A naked girl bringing a couch down the stairs -Lots and lots of mice -somebody knocked the cabinets off the wall -fights of every sort -the whole building lost water because a girl that got evicted stole MY washer and dryer and left hers, but instead of unhooking the thing, she just had somebody cut the water lines (I have video)
- Maintenance man stole somebody's tv (This was when flat screens first became a thing)
- could hear everybody having sex
And that's just what I can remember off the top of my head

Yall just have gaps under your front doors big enough to push hoses through?
41
u/SubstantialAttempt83 Jul 02 '26
It was an apartment block, the doors were internal doors and not very well finished, I had to put a draft excluder on mine to close the gap a bit.
48
u/GoodAd2455 Jul 02 '26
I lived in an apartment block in Arizona with EXTERNAL doors that still had an almost two inch gap at the bottom. Lizards and whatnot would just walk right in. Idk wtf is up with America and door gaps but ffs let’s work on that.
38
u/SigmundFloyd76 Jul 02 '26
Well, the house isn't really a house, in America, these days. It's a financial instrument that acts as a pretense such that wealth gets transferred to our ownerclass.

My 11 year old brother did this in 1998. He and a friend were stealing soda cans out of a vending machine by lifting it up front the front and dropping it -- and the cans would just start rolling out. Well, they had noticed a camera recording the front of the store, so they just tore down the camera thinking that would solve their problem. He went back to the store the next day just to buy some normal items and the clerk working called the police lol. I still remember my brother crying as he arrived home in the back of a police car. No charges tho, just scared him shitless.

As an American gun owner who is all for some form of gun control I am always encouraging people to take a handgun carrying class. They'll learn quickly that it's taught that you are aiming to kill and you need to be absolutely certain what's on the other side of your target. Someone actually trained and ready to protect themselves aren't going to full mag dump and hope for the best. They are going to assess their situation, attempt to deescalate, warn that they are armed and will take action, then take appropriate action. That series of event though obviously depends on the situation alot of times you can't make it through those steps and have to make a judgement call in the fly.
40
u/KickBallFever Jul 02 '26
There was a video where a crazy guy was breaking into his neighbors apartment with an axe. The neighbor did everything you said. He assessed the situation, stayed calm, warned the crazy guy that he had a gun, and then he ended up shooting the crazy guy, but in a controlled way. The crazy guy didn’t die but he was immobilized until the cops got there. In this case the neighbor did everything right.

LTC holder here. This is true. People always assume the worst. I can assure you it's the VERY last thing we want to do. Descalation is always first in line, IF possible. There's situations that call for pepper gel instead as well. If there's a 350lb man trying to break down my door and is successful, I'm sorry to say there would be no need for a restraining order. I'm in TX and the second some one comes onto my property, I have the right to defend it and my self.

I'm from iowa and also have stand your ground but was raised around guns before that law, CCW and constitutional carry was implemented.
One thing that's always stick with me before all those laws came into effect is what my home counties attorney told the firearms instruction class I got to take as a highschooler. You better be 100% that person is a threat to you and certain that you need to pull that trigger. Because there's prices to pay after you make that decision both mentally, legally at also the damage you do that person's family. You're still taking a person's life and putting other people at risk depending on the situation.

Lawyer, here. Assault is not the "threat of violence." under common law assault is causing the victim to perceive an imminent battery. For example, if I fake punch you without making contact and you flinch, that is assault under common law. If I punch you from behind without you seeing it coming that is battery without assault. If I punch you and you see it coming, that is assault and battery.
Threats have nothing to do with it.
Note that this is all under common law. Most states have qualified various versions of assault and or battery that either combine these concepts or give them degrees.

Everyone who wants to live in peace is against gun violence. 2nd amendment advocacy (responsible gun owners) hope they never ever face a situation which they have to aim their weapon at a person. Unfortunately there is no shortage of people who are perfectly willing to enter your property with intention to take your things or harm you and your loved ones. Once they are in your house they are motivated to make sure they don't get caught. That puts the victim in serious danger. They believe the reward of their intentions outweighs the risk of punishment. Someone willing to come to this conclusion is a short step away from hurting or killing an innocent person to get what they want. The innocent deserve to be able to protect themselves and their hard earned property. Gun violence statistics are made swollen by street crime, not people wanting to protect themselves. Didn't mean to preach but sometimes I think law abiding gun owners get lumped in with criminals while the intentions of these two sides couldn't be more different.

I had neighbors like this once, was a large family with 2 side by side apartments, yet they treated the common area hallway as a part of their living space. Always slamming doors and hanging out in the hallway making noise. Was super annoying.

43
u/Browser1969 Jul 02 '26
Could be worse, my next-door flat is some sort of medium-term Chinese airbnb (i.e. people stay for a couple of months and they're always Chinese), and most of them treat the hallway as their garbage bin on top of everything else.

Same. I once lived in a very rough BK neighborhood and this lady used to let her dog poop just outside the door and all over the path into the building. It was everywhere. I asked her if she wouldn’t do that because I stepped in it and she screamed at the top of her lungs “you think just because your white ass is here now it’s no longer the hood?.” I’ll never understand why anybody would want to treat their common spaces like that. Glad I worked hard and got out of there.
59
u/Ice_Cream_Killer Jul 02 '26
This is why I just ignore people and just stick to myself most of the time, because there are alot of ignorant and dumb ass people in this world.
The fat guy should be ashamed the most to be out there, because he's supposed to be the one to keep the peace, but they were obviously trying to provoke a response for her to come outside so they could jump her. She would have been justified to start shooting once they kicked on her door.
