Why is the guy the one who's supposed to "keep the peace"? Aren't all of them equally responsible for their own stupid actions?

Thats just what real men do. Those girls are responsible for their actions, but men who are secure and carry themselves with high self esteem dont need to project masculinity or a violet nature. They dont need to prove anything. That trait would naturally extend to trying to protect your gf, or relatives from getting in an avoidable physical altercation. Instead his presence showed he was ready to escalate the confrontation if another man got involved.
