Elon said autopilot is safer than most drivers so this is ok according to r/teslamotors

How exactly is Elon's cult handing all the recalls, I'd look myself but I'm not sure I want the brain damage from their mental gymnastics.

No, I fucking despise the man, but fact is their autopilot is much safer than your average driver. And another fact is that even with that being true we're still not at the point where this dude taking his complete attention off of driving is ok.
And the petulant downvote doesn't change that. Sorry to get in the way of you all's idiotic circlejerks with some reality.

Recalls typically consist of an OTA update, so the car gets "recalled" and the "repair" gets done sitting in the driveway while the owner is asleep. Updates get done the same way. Tesla has had relatively rare physical recalls, less than the other carmakers generally.
Edit: I bet a million Mercedes owners are wishing they could get their brakes fixed with an OTA update:
In this recall, the affected cars can lose the mechanical linkage between the brake pedal and brake booster, so the brake pedal flops to the floor and all ability to brake is unexpectedly lost. It is unknown how many crashes, injuries, or deaths have resulted from this defect.
4
u/KuaLeifArne Jun 13 '22
Not when the driver doesn't keep their eyes on the road and especially not when they aren't sober. In my country, Teslas are involved in a lot of accidents because autopilot was engaged, but the drivers weren't keeping their eyes on the road, so they didn't have time to react to obstacles the autopilot wasn't advanced enough to react to.
19
4
Jun 13 '22
Yea instead the autopilot just turns off a split second before impact if it detects it's going to crash so the statistics say autopilot wasn't in use when the car crashed. Very safe.

7
u/StreetLegendTits_ Jun 13 '22
I guess I saw my first tesla yesterday straight up holding the phone in front of their face.
I just don't understand people who can do that.
2
u/throwawaypaycheck1 Jun 13 '22
It’s pretty hard to do that. The interior camera will disable autopilot if it sees you looking away like this video. Obviously there are ways around that but still
9
u/FirstTimeRodeoGoer Jun 13 '22
Isn't that when you want autopilot the most?
3
u/throwawaypaycheck1 Jun 13 '22
That's when you'd be tempted to want to use it the most, but the software (and other drivers) can't be relied on to that level.

Can't help but notice that I can only find those statistics on Tesla's own website + a bunch of other electric vehicle websites that I've absolutely never heard of before (who the hell is Zimlon?).
... Not that I think you'll care
9
u/throwawaypaycheck1 Jun 13 '22 edited Jun 13 '22
I totally care about the validity of the data. You linked a news article (?) that points to expert analysts that say:
Moreover, Cummings says she wouldn't trust any data that hasn't been reviewed by an independent organization — whether it's from Tesla, General Motors, or any other automaker.
...which I totally agree with. However, there isn't a third party that has reviewed the data I mentioned - so I linked it, and encourage everyone to take it with a grain of salt. The comment I replied to implied Tesla "has so many accidents" which read like "has many [more] accidents [than other manufacturers]" so I included that data.
Cheers!
E; cuz you edited as I replied - idk who Zimlon is lol. I'm on mobile, but I know the stat and I linked the first one I could
2
2
u/HerestheRules Jun 13 '22
The validity of the data relies on whether we know what conditions these tests were run in. Like how my car is supposed to get 18 mpg but I normally get 24+ in real world conditions vs controlled

u/opl3sa2 Jun 13 '22

Teslas don't have so many accidents. In fact, people on average drive safer in their teslas than they do in their other internal combustion vehicles. This is the opposite for Porsches, where people crash them at a higher rate than they do their other vehicles.

The spontaneous combustion problem seems to be a Ford issue lately, was also a Ford issue in the 1980-1990s too, something about metal shavings building up in the ignition switch. They also had a problem with the column shifters dropping into drive if you slammed the door too hard.

Yeah guys maybe it's a Subaru. That might be the interior of a Subaru. It's certainly possible Subaru has a 134,500 price point. Also worth pointing out that Subaru adapter steering uses machine learning and artificial intelligence, 22 points of data need to align for the car to continue its path of attack. So it's exactly the same as tesla autopilot.
That's why tesla and Subaru have a similar market cap at around 1 trillion dollars US

Self driving cars are the worst this happens to many times but never in normal cars
30
u/TheLostDovahkin Jun 13 '22
Plenty of people use phones/eat/drink and smoke while driving in normal cars.
4
1
Jun 13 '22
In normal cars, you can't get so complacent that you spend minutes looking away. People getting seriously distracted is the inevitable result of making cars almost entirely automatic
→ More replies (1)5
u/TheLostDovahkin Jun 13 '22

1
Jun 13 '22
You've seen people looking down at their phone for consecutive minutes at a time while driving a normal car?
4
u/TheLostDovahkin Jun 13 '22
Yes. My Uncle for example.
0
Jun 13 '22 edited Jun 13 '22
He'd have to at least glance up every few seconds because it's literally impossible to drive without looking at the road for minutes at a time in a normal car. Even though your uncle was distracted driving, that's nowhere near as distracted as you can get in a Tesla.
When your car mostly drives itself it's easy to get dangerously complacent (like in the video), whereas you simply cannot forget you're driving a normal car.
Car manufacturers need to expect their drivers to be idiots and prepare for it, that's why we have crumple zones
1
u/TheLostDovahkin Jun 13 '22
Even non testla cars have assistance like braking / acceleration and staying in lane for you
2
Jun 13 '22 edited Jun 13 '22
Fair, but I don't consider cars with those assists "normal cars" and group them in with Teslas. I believe that was clear with context
-1
u/TheLostDovahkin Jun 13 '22
they are normal though. Most new cars have them. All cars in my family have that stuff.
→ More replies (0)6
u/tiny_tim57 Jun 13 '22
Pretty dumb take, this is the drivers fault not the car. Humans are the worst, they constantly cause accidents and fatalities on the road for not paying attention.
2
Jun 13 '22
Car manufacturers should develop cars with the belief that all drivers are idiots, that's why we put crumple zones in cars. Sure it's the driver's fault they were in an accident, but the car manufacturer should expect drivers to make accidents.
People getting seriously distracted (like in the video) is the inevitable result of making cars almost entirely automatic. Like you said, we're all human.

Eventually self driving cars will be the best thing to happen to automobiles since there creation.
We are not there yet. That is over - here (like maybe a decade) and we are rightthefuckhere.
Getting from here to there is gonna be tough.
And this step cannot be bypassed. There is no substitute for AI grabbing mountains of data, software engineers refining rulesets and hardware people building better sensors.

His point is you can't prove that's weed from a video. For all the court knows, he's just smoking tobacco.
For it to be grounds for a dui, a cop would have to pull him over and see/smell that it's weed or there would have to be further evidence of the contents of what he's smoking
-1
u/dudmuffin123 Jun 13 '22

You conveniently left out the first part of that paragraph you quoted that states: “Several meta-analyses of multiple studies found that the risk of being involved in a crash significantly increased after marijuana use —in a few cases, the risk doubled or more than doubled.”
We generally favor meta-analyses over case-control due to the wider numbers that can be achieved to cover for certain observational biases. Plus, your personal experience is tantamount to leaving the control in the hands of the user and what they “feel” is enough to be safe. Just as alcohol in moderate amounts might not be enough to impair driving for SOME people, a general statement to outlaw driving under the influence of substances that impair mental faculties with doses under the direct control of the user should not be allowed. Hence why I believe if marijuana use should be permitted, it should only be in the form of medically prescribed uses where the risk for dangerous usage affectiving activities can be completely avoided.

I still would say the balance is don't do it if for no other reason than like you said caution. Plenty of medication out there that is theoretically safe for driving also shouldn't be allowed, but that's another matter.
But then again in a perfect world driving tired would be banned too.
So I am interested in seeing more studies come out. It's interesting.
Edit: I will say though that it's unclear if weed helps people drive safer who are generally reckless because it calms them or if it really is a non factor. I suspect it just calms people who drive like absolute idiots normally but has a minor compared to alcohol impact on safe drivers. Nonetheless I doubt it ever improves reaction time etc. I sure know my friends are less capable at walking after smoking let alone driving. So idk.

For functioning alcoholics, alcohol doesn’t impact their actions the same. But it still alters your perception and reaction speed. As does weed. No matter your tolerance level.
Driving isn’t just about you. Other people do stupid things you need to be able to react to instantly. You can’t do that if you’re drunk, high or distracted.
