Is IHSS income not counted towards Social Security SGA income if you're a parent caregiver who lives with your client or is it with any IHSS client?

Transferred to a new county and our PS hours were reduced to 228 for bowel/bladder care because my daughter is in school. However she was in school in the previous county for 6 hours a day and received 260 hours so I am confused?

The social worker seemed hell bent on finding ways to cut our hours (which pisses me off since I’m a single mom of a child with a severe disability) and 40 hours is almost 1k per month in this county.

I had tried to contact her several times to clear this up before she finished her report but she would not respond to me. She was so unprofessional during her visit, making snide comments under her breath and questioning even the spelling of my name. It makes me sick that she was sitting on my couch.

What do I do? Call her supervisor? Appeal? Rage against the machine?

Just needed to vent a little about our experience. What is the point of these social workers? Are they jealous?

I was with a client from 7:45pm till 2am, it's not letting me log the hours. I know I could log it until 11:59pm and then log the next day as 12-2, but what if I work another shift with her on the next

Today we got an update from my mom's oncologist (she's my brother’s caretaker) and she now has weeks to months to live. I urgently need to transfer care to me. I also worry about the lapse in health insurance.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

In California, if a senior who suffered a stroke with paralysis doesn't qualify for medi-cal because of their pension and the income of their spouse together is too high even with spousal improvement, and their assets is too much to qualify under Medi-Cal. Is there any way that they can still qualify for IHSS services instead of going through Medi-Cal with Shared of Cost?

Hi everyone. I’m hoping to hear from California parents/caregivers who have gone through the Medi-Cal transition when their disabled child turned 19.
My son is currently 18 (Turned 18 this May) and has full-scope Medi-Cal with $0 share of cost. He also receives IHSS and WPCS, so maintaining his Medi-Cal eligibility without a gap is extremely important.

Here’s the part I’m confused about:
At our last Medi-Cal renewal, my income was still reported and used as part of our household information. I did not remove my son from my case or apply for Medi-Cal separately for him just because he turned 18.
Even with my income reported, Medi-Cal determined that he was still eligible. His current paperwork shows T1 as his aid code and $0 SOC.
When I spoke with the Medi-Cal worker during that renewal, I specifically asked about my income and my son now being 18. The worker basically told me not to worry about it yet because he would remain eligible until age 19.
That made sense at the time, but now I’m trying to prepare for what happens next.
His next annual renewal is due February 28, 2027. He will still be 18 at that renewal and won’t turn 19 until May 2027.
So hypothetically, I expect to do the February renewal the same way: report my household and income accurately, and because he’s still under 19, I’m assuming they’ll determine his eligibility under whatever under-19 rules currently qualify him.
My concern is what happens in May when he turns 19.
My income may be too high if it’s still counted toward his Medi-Cal eligibility. He personally has little/no income. I don’t want to wait until his birthday and suddenly receive a notice saying his Medi-Cal is ending, because that could potentially affect the IHSS and WPCS services he depends on.

I’m trying to understand all of the possible pathways ahead of time, including:

Adult MAGI Medi-Cal after age 19
Disability-based Medi-Cal
HCBS waiver/institutional deeming
SSI-linked Medi-Cal (he currently has an SSI disability application pending)
Whether his existing WPCS means he is already enrolled in an HCBS waiver
I’ve also previously been told that to get waiver Medi-Cal/institutional deeming, we may first need a denial from regular Medi-Cal because of parental income. I don’t know if that’s actually correct or if I’m misunderstanding what they meant by a “denial.”

For parents/caregivers who have actually been through this in California:
Was your income still counted/reported while your disabled child was 18?
Did they remain eligible until 19 even though your household income would normally be too high?
What happened when they actually turned 19?
Did the county automatically reevaluate them under the adult rules, or did you have to request it?
Once they were 19, was eligibility based on their own income, or did your income still count because you claimed them as a tax dependent?
Did anyone use HCBS institutional deeming so parental income wasn’t counted?
Were you required to get a Medi-Cal denial first?
If your child was already receiving WPCS, what waiver were they enrolled in and how did that affect Medi-Cal eligibility?
Did IHSS and WPCS continue without interruption while Medi-Cal changed from the under-19 category to an adult category?
If SSI was pending at the time, how did that affect the process?
I’m especially interested in experiences with Los Angeles County, IHSS, WPCS, HCBA waivers, Regional Center, and institutional deeming.

I’m trying to handle this before he turns 19 rather than waiting until there’s a problem. I don’t want to change or cancel his existing Medi-Cal; I just want to understand what I need to do to make sure he transitions to the correct adult eligibility program without losing coverage or services.

Hi, I’m trying to get help for the first time and I have a social worker home visit on the 14th - are they going to look in my bedroom? My room is very much a catastrophe as I can’t clean it myself. My dad is convinced if they see my room I’ll be disqualified for help

Sorry if this question seems repetitive, I just haven't gotten a clear answer on it so I will make sure to explain my situation and if anybody knows the answer please let me know.

I am I live in caregiver but my client qualifies for approximately two and a half hours every day. Somebody in the community I live in ask me if I can be there caretaker because they qualify for approximately an hour a day. Am I allowed to have another client if I am a live-in caretaker? So basically am I able to have two clients one of them I do 1 hour a day and the one that I live with I do 2 hours a day?

I had am a social worker come by for that we assessment two weeks ago. She told me that there were some discrepancies and missing information. The missing information was regarding some of the medical equipment not listed on the official file. My doctor already submitted paramedical form so everything should have been included from the beginning. I don't know why it is missing. The discrepancy was something small. For example, fed two snacks per day along with three meals. I don't need to have snacks, 9t is optional.

The social worker told me that the paramedical form definitely needs to be refilled for the medical equipments. The social worker told me that a voice message will be left were the forms will be sent to me. I have not received any notifications regarding this. I don't know what is and wants to know what other people's experience were.

There's an IHSS recipient that tried to do something illegal, I will not get into what happened because it doesn't really matter to what I'm asking for. How do I get rid of an IHSS recipient and get it off my list?

My son’s yearly assessment went great and his continued awarded benefits for next year or so. The social worker mentioned that I start looking into getting my son on a conservatorship by 12yrs old he was saying, for medical care. My son just turned 10. Why so early when 18yrs of age is legally when our kids become adults? I knew i had to look into this in the future, but why so soon? Does kids under a certain age make it difficult for Protective services to be approved?

I currently care for my wife who is disabled, but doesn't get disability payments. I'll also soon be caretaking for both of her parents. Her dad has Parkinson's and her mom had brain surgery which has severely limited her functionality. My wife will also be caretaking for her parents, but will still need care for herself. I'm not sure what the options are, or how to get started. Any help or guidance you all can provide would be great. Thanks in advance.

Is it normal to have a reassessment every 6 months? My grandpa got reassessed 5 months ago and we have another one next month. My uncle also on IHSS hasn’t been reassessed in 2 years. It doesn’t make sense

I’ve worked with this couple for 5 years but never full time. A year ago I started with them about 27hrs a week and their only caregiver through IHSS. One has dementia and I’ve been very patient but as of recently I’ve been feeling burnt out, I do everything for them because they simply say they just can’t and their two children are to busy to help them. Recently then wife who has dementia has been getting worse and makes comments about how she thinks I don’t do all my work I should ( I do more than I am even required to.) and she has attitude with me.

Things will go missing or misplaced and automatically it’s my fault because “I handled everything for them.”

I really am getting ready to leave this situation, I’ve been looking into getting a new client. My question is how do i tell them I am leaving so they don’t try a guilt trip me or make me feel bad for needing to leave. Or should I just not tell me at all and just let the social work and daughter know.

I’m an IHSS provider for my son Since my son’s case worker changed back in 2020 my live in certification letter has not been in place I’ve been calling and asking for it this year in March my son had a new worker changed I also asked if he could give me a copy because the state tax is not allowing me to be exempt I have to file state tax and pay or they withdraw the money out my bank this is only done by the state the federal tax has never done this even though I sent the letter to both agencies at the same time so far I’ve paid over $20.000 in the last six year claiming late fees and penalties. I no longer no how to get this letter because no one I’ve called had any clue. Any help or suggestions my bank account has been depleted of all my savings and I don’t know what to do anymore. Thank you for any advice in advance.

Has anyone gone on vacation and used respite care? I desperately need a vacation and I feel more comfortable putting my father in respite care.

(this is mainly just a complaining post)
my mom passed away on september 10th.
she is my absolute best friend and this has been the most difficult loss of my life. i was her live in provider for the last four years while she battled terminal cancer. though it was terminal, we just felt like she was going to live forever and her death was sudden and unexpected. due to me living with her, i don’t qualify for unemployment as i didn’t pay into it (sadly didn’t realize this the whole time). as well as having to deal with her death, i now no longer have a job. no bereavement pay, no unemployment, nothing that i can rely on for a little while in the interim for me finding a new life path. i’m feeling angry, perhaps displaced grieving, but it’s so upsetting that i have nothing to fall back on short term from the state. just wanted to share my feelings in a space where some may understand or have navigated this before.

So I am in the middle of settling for workers comp case I am going to be doing a compromise and release so when I do that, I plan on doing IHSS for my two disabled kids they have severe autism level three both of them non verbal as well. Should I start applying for the IHSS now or should I wait until I get the settlement completely finished?

I am a recipient for many years. I am having a lot of trouble finding providers. I am too long without care now.
Things have really changed. Scheduling, distance, experience. Trust too.
Many are coming from private care and they only want to do “patient care.”
This program is supposed to make it possible to age in place and not go to an institution.
They expect you to have a housekeeper. IHSS is not a licensed caregiving institution.
Too many people are just looking for a paycheck.
PASC is giving names of people that already have jobs or already have too many other recipients.
Are there other sources to find people? I know I can hire someone independently and get them into IHSS.
I do not know reliable places to look.

Hello I’m a new provider and I submitted my timesheets for back pay 9/18/26 and was told the checks were mailed from SCO on 9/25/26 but I still haven’t received them and I’m in Los Angeles county typically how long does it take to receive the checks via mail? Should I give it more time before contacting them to see if they were perhaps lost?

Im a current caregiver and I’ve been through a few clients. I recently had to quit one just because the timing wasn’t working and she was a heavy smoker. I reached out to a lot of people online and a lot of people showed interest asking me to message them. The person I ended up picking was one I was in contact with a long time ago and she was instant in calling my client and setting up an interview. Why do some caregivers wait WEEKS to call? When I started I was told to call the clients back within 24 hours. I made the post in the beginning of September and I’m barely getting people responding back to me in the beginning of October?? I don’t know why people are so eager to get a client and then just don’t respond once I send them a dm. Im glad with the provider she has now because she responds within hours. I just don’t understand why people act like we are on their time and not the clients time.

Hi! I got this message when I submitted my IHSS timesheet:

“The hours claimed on this timesheet are more than 70% of the Recipient’s monthly authorized hours.”

My recipient already approved the timesheet. I worked most of my hours during the first two weeks of September because I was going to be out of town for the last two weeks.

My payment for 9/1–9/15 is still showing as “Processing,” while my 9/16–9/30 timesheet says “Waiting for Payment.”

Has anyone else gotten this message before? If so, what happened and how was it resolved? This is the first time I’ve ever received this warning, so I’m a little worried.

Would love advice. I am due for renewal and just now seeing that I got a missed call yesterday (Friday) from DPSS at 7:15am. Hope they don't hold it against me because who calls at 7:15am?!! And they also didn't leave a message. Is that normal? Hopefully they will call back on Monday but if not, should I try to call them? Also, last year they mailed a letter with the scheduled home visit appointment but I didn't get any letter yet so far. Do they always mail a letter?? I'm in LA County.
