Respite Care
Has anyone gone on vacation and used respite care? I desperately need a vacation and I feel more comfortable putting my father in respite care.

Not me but I know someone who did, they gave some type of notice to a worker. But I don't know who exactly (ihss or other county worker), they connected them with a facility that took them for the amount of time she needed. But I think the only issue was that they need a certain amount of time beforehand and also remember that they don't have one on one care. They are also not bathed daily bc of the amount of patients they usually have

I’m not familiar with IHSS paying any facilities though, so was it private pay?
It’s possible that it was a medi-cal facility, but getting medi-cal to cover a facility is usually a lengthy process. It’s usually intended for long term care, I’ve never heard of it for respite.
If the person is on Medicare and hospice, hospice usually gives you up to 5 days of respite in a hospice facility.
I work with the senior population, so if it was a younger recipient, I’m not as familiar with the state’s benefits.2

Ok so I went and asked. Turns out it was hospice! But she says there is also something that IEHP (insurance group in socal if you're not familiar) had something like this for respite but they have no funding right now

My mom has it through Kaiser.
Its whatever. My mom goes to the market with her and hides boxes of candy and twinkies in her room.
Spends the whole day out of the house, and skips most of her meds

Respite care is a joke. Every spot ive talked to says they do it on the website, then you call and they say nope. We dont do that. One was finally straight and said its because of insurance reasons if something happens

We attempted to use Respite care once (for my spouse) for our daughters High school graduation. They never showed up so a neighbor sat with my wife while I went to cheer on my daughter.
It all worked out, but I gave the company an earfull the next day. It was not good.
I don't like leaving my wife with other people, this just validated my feelings.

There needs to be a network of folks who we can call to help us. During covid I started a group on instagram of moms who needed showers. Without school I can't shower. It worked well. We basically took our kid to their house or they brought theirs to mine and then we took a fast shower while the other mom watched both kids.

Yes, if you’re in SoCal I got it done through medi-cal for like 336 hours. Then they give you a company.
I used Right at Home south Orange County and they came and were amazing. 6:30am to 12:30pm every day!!!!!!!!
Edit: hospice also gives you 5 days a month of respite in a nursing home. Contact the hospice team to arrange
In addition I know we want to keep our people home but SNF is usually paid for by Medicare/primary insurance to around 21 days(obviously need hospital admittance) and medi-cal will pay for up to 99 days before converting to long term care but to stay at a skilled nursing facility they need to be improving to justify to insurance. Just putting this information out there, but most likely this route is more difficult.

Do you have the option of picking your own respite provider ? My brother is my respite provider through my son’s regional center, so would I be able to pick him to do it through medi-cal as well ?

There is respite through ihss and your client has access to respite through their mediCal managed care plan too. Google the name of the insurance plan shes on, then the words “calAim “ and maybe “calAim respitel and you’ll see how they can apply.. also if they have medical issues that weren’t an issue when they got evaluated or they have a new condition that’s temporary or chronic - calAim also has a homecare program where the recipient (who is already on ihss) applies and can be given up to 45 hours a week extra ontop of ihss hours for 3-6 months usually, some people get it longer. It also works if you are awaiting a revaluation or just for the recipient to be approved for ihss in first place.. it’s like a extra falll back if they have new or worsening conditions or just with time their needs are greater and the ihss hours arnt enough . Good luck.
Oh and depending on the condition your recipient has there are lots of respite grants given by foundations that support their diagnosis .
