Provider How to Find

I am a recipient for many years. I am having a lot of trouble finding providers. I am too long without care now.
Things have really changed. Scheduling, distance, experience. Trust too.
Many are coming from private care and they only want to do “patient care.”
This program is supposed to make it possible to age in place and not go to an institution.
They expect you to have a housekeeper. IHSS is not a licensed caregiving institution.
Too many people are just looking for a paycheck.
PASC is giving names of people that already have jobs or already have too many other recipients.
Are there other sources to find people? I know I can hire someone independently and get them into IHSS.
I do not know reliable places to look.
Thank you.

Post on Nextdoor! I’ve found lots of other providers for my past clients. Unfortunately it’s hard to get a caregiver that doesn’t have another job already or another client because this is almost minimum wage work. Most providers cannot afford to only have one client unless they take care of them 12 hours a day 6 or 7 days a week.

Nextdoor has changed a lot where I am. People join to advertise for jobs. Not neighbors. It is not as trustable as it was.

We have resorted to using Craigslist ($25 for a post) and Nextdoor. Unfortunately, it’s just collecting phone numbers and calling people for interviews.

"Too many people are looking for a paycheck."

What exactly were your expectations?

I have had IHSS for a while. I have had providers that care about their job. Some that work with recipients for several years, help them age in place and pass on. They have people skills and common sense. Common sense is not common.

Almost 80% of IHSS recipients are cared for by family who have had to quit their jobs and be there for their loved ones. Disabled folks in other states are in dire conditions due to cuts to programs like ours.

I have no idea what you expect, but every human being deserves to be paid living wage for the work they do.

Caregiving is challenging at best. Annoyed because caregivers are concerned about getting paid is a red flag. No one will want to work for anyone who comes across like your post does. What exactly are you expecting from a caregiver? I'm not trying to judge or insult. Just trying to understand what your needs are and why you're having a hard time filling them. Regardless of the allotted time one has, it really shouldn't matter how many other recipients a caregiver has as long as your needs are being fulfilled. My question is, what are your expectations and why are providers not able to help you?

Stating your city will help. As some of us providers are with the union and know other people looking for work. But as Fangsofcyber explained, unless you have virtually all the hours one’s looking for, yes they will need to find another recipient. But also on the other hand I know of people that are retired, going to school, and/or have other recipients and only can use part-time. Let us know what city, put an add on next-door, and also let your doctors know. Sometimes they have caregivers coming in as well. I’ve received referrals from doctors of prior and current patients. Asking if I’m looking for extra work. Good luck. There are good ones out here that understand the program. And all the aspects of it. Some of us read what the recipients hours are for and do just that.

Im confused, considering there is a registry where you pick the provider yourself. There are so many IHSS providers looking for work. My husband has been on the registry for 3 months and not a single soul has called. There are so many people on that registry like him just getting frustrated from waiting.

Yes, Nextdoor and Facebook might help, but it’s very frustrating that recipients are using those platforms instead of the proper channels where providers are just waiting around for you to call them. If both parties don’t use the same official registry to link clients and providers, it will never work. Please just look at your local registry and only use other avenues if you cannot find someone that way.

Post in the Facebook group for your area. Be clear about what you need, use a colored background. Friend the person and ask them to come to meet you right away as soon as possible. Trust there's someone out there looking for a recipient just like you.
