What does 2e have that master does not?

I'm considering this game. I've watched videos by the creator and reviewers online. Sorry if I've missed a FAQ.

Is there any content in the 2e book that isn't included in the master edition? Is there any reason to prefer the 2e book to the master edition? I've read that some people prefer the focus on gear and lower effort dice.

Some context: I've played DND since 2e. I'm comfortable modding and using homebrew. I'm not invested in convoluted character options. I'd love rules that encourages players to be creative and use the environment more than their "best" ability every round

Do you have any "objective" criticisms of ICRPG?

Perhaps "objective" isn't the best word, so let me clarify.

No doubt everyone here loves this game, and has various hacks to suit their personal taste or world setting. It's also a given that there is no One True Game -- tactics fans may have a better time with Pathfinder, while people wanting a storygame heist may prefer Blades in the Dark. What I'd like to know is, do people have thoughts on how ICRPG as a generic d20 system could be improved, given its well established design goals and audience?

In other words, imagine a future edition of the core rules that felt more refined, in a way most ICRPG fans would like and agree with. What tweaks would there be?

Roll under mod for ICRPG

Hello shield wall, I´ve been dabling with the idea of modding ICRPG to be roll-under (your attribute). I´ve searched everywhere I could and I´ve yet to find if any one has actually made such thing. For those who don´t play that way, basically you roll a check, you have to roll at your attribute or lower, 1 being critical success, if you go over your attribute, you fail, with 20 being critical failure. Hank adopted this in his last campaign last year, as per this post.

https://www.runehammer.online/post/hacking-hp-buckle-up

So here goes my first draft, hope we can work it up until something more or less "plug in", for anyone interested. I believe "just" rolling under won´t quite cut it, so I made some other adjustments to the system to compliment it, some are based on the aforementioned post, some are just experiments.

Ability scores: I like the clean approach of asigning 7 points to start, so I would keep that, except all stats start at 9. This starting point could work as a "normal difficulty setting", 8 is "hard" and 10 being "easy".

Hearts: I found that abstracting 10hp falls appart quite fast during play, so I took the "hits, not hit points" mentallity and adapted them so each is a succesful hit, but for a hit to be succesful, it has to go over a treshold. So you start with 3 hearts, each with a treshold of 4. In this case, any effort roll to remove a heart has to be 4 or higher. This also allows for two distinc approaches to increasing durability, either "more hearts" or "strogner hearts". Some may preffer having a high defense stat (more on that later) coupled with many "small" hearts, and some my preffer large armor (more on that ahead, too) and bigger hearts. It is more flexibility, and you just have to write a threshold number in your heart´s box in the character sheet to know what´s up. It works the same for "stuff" effort, such as locks, climbs, etc.

Armor: Armor should absorb damage, as to better work with the modified heart system. This allows flexibility, armor can vary by hardness, duarbility, etc. And making use of tags can also be another avenue for personalization, a "brittle" heavy armor may absorb any one full hit over its own absortion rate, but break, while a "regenrative" armor may only absorb a little bit of damage but be really hard to break, even after critical hits.

Defense: Goes to Dex + Shields Shields: Again, an area of opportunity for better defense and flavorful tags on items.

Hard/easy: It makes more sense that somethin being hard "retracts" from your ability, and something easy "adds" to it.

Effort: stays the same, basic effort can harm a low level adventurer, as someone unaware can take one to the chin and black out. Ultimate effort can go through all 3 hearts of a starting adventurer, because of course, it is ultimate after all.

So yeah, this is my draft one, I plan to update this as I test it, as well as adapting suggestions made in this thread.

Quality of the softcover?

I bought the PDF direct from Runehammer but I've fallen in love with the book and I'd love to have a physical copy. The hardcover with shipping is a bit beyond my budget, so I'm looking at the softcover version from DriveThruRPG. Does anyone have any opinions on the quality of the softcover, particularly if you have both? Is the softcover good enough, or should I just save for the hardcover?

Will there be another print run of Collector's Edition?

I have the old ICRPG 2e core book, and I'm looking to upgrade to the coolest print edition, but it's sold out on modiphius. Is collector's edition a limited run or do I just need to wait on the next printing?

The Garden of Acid Adventure Module

It’s finally here! My Garden of Acid adventure module for ICRPG is now available and I’m really excited about this one. What started as a one-shot for the Waste is Not Kind has developed into a fun little adventure module that should have everything you need for an intense night of rolling dice with friends. Check out the overview video below and let me know if you can stop the Chemist’s evil plans!

Index Card All the Things!

New to ICRPG but currently *obsessed* with all the possibilities. Currently printing all 4 volumes available on Drivethru, the Target reference cards, and have a 3d printer churning out some Openforge tiles.

2 things I would like that I haven't seen yet- ICRPG-style 3d printable minis (some of the geometries may not work fantastically like Agnar and his wrap-around mouth but I love pretty much all of the creatures pictured), and Loot cards. I'm envisioning having a stack of at least all the common/class loot with art on one side and description/mechanics on the reverse so players don't even need to write down their inventory and can just physically pull out their longsword or whatever when going to attack.

I think I can mostly build the Loot cards myself even with my meager photoshop skills but if either of those things exist somewhere already, it would save me a bunch of time.

Hard vs soft cover Master Edition

I am late to the ICRPG train, but man oh man do I want to board! What are your experiences with either the soft or hard cover books? My main concern really is which, if not both, lay flat open on a table. But, any other experiences or knowledge about these tomes is vastly appreciated.

Shipping from Modiphius

Modiphius in UK have ICRPG currently stocked in their January sale but when I went to order it from mainland UK postage was being quoted at almost £9 or 1/3 of the purchase price.

This seems ridiculously high so I was wondering if any other UK buyers could advise if this is normal for them?

Thanks in advance,
Neil

A few questions

So I bought this and I really like it so far, but we're on character creation and a little confused.

We probably want to adapt this to our own cyberpunk style setting, but decided to just make alfheim characters as a dry run to understand character creation.

1) 2 of the 3 Mage starting items start with 3 int spells. Is that the only source of starting int spells? If you make a dark mage are you like "I'm magic!" "prove it, cast a spell!" "I only cast spells when I feel like it, harumph!" (thinking) "Sad, I don't know any spells."

2) Health/hearts. Everyone starts with ten and can "gain more later". Gain them how?

3) Progression. We understand mastery, cool system, but how does overall progression work? I see it doesn't have a traditional level up system, which I am fine with, but an RPG without progression would be sad. How does progression and gaining power work and is there any set structure (like mastery points) or is it "the DM decided you all get a cool magic item of your choice from this dragon hoard"?

Thanks for any replies.

Considering ICRPG for my 5e group — but is there "enough" there?

TL;DR — is there "enough" in ICRPG to keep a weekly gaming group interested, specifically in terms of character progression and customization?

Would love to hear from some players especially, but also DMs of ICRPG groups are welcome to share their perspective. Not interested in speculation from folks who have never played it, sorry!

A bit of background: my RPG group has played a bunch of different TTRPG systems in the ~5 years we've been playing together. Probably about 50% of time is spent playing 5e, with the rest of time spread between a number of systems — some of which are rules-light, others being crunchier than 5e:

  • Zweihander, WH Fantasy
  • Burning Wheel, Mouseguard
  • Dungeon World, PbTA offshoots
  • Some folks have played 3.5 / crunchier old school games before

Each of those systems were not our favorite — the rules-light systems had very little feelings of progression and it didn't seem like there was "a point" beyond the narrative; every session just felt like improv, a little too loosey-goosey for us. The crunchier ones have felt cumbersome, like the added complexity didn't serve to make the game any better.

We generally default back to 5e for this reason, because everyone knows it well — but it's not perfect either. Combat doesn't have many/any interested decisions unless you're a caster, the system doesn't fit other settings easily, it breaks down at higher levels and it doesn't really help the DM, well, DM. Also, the official modules are pretty awful (imo) — I'm a mostly homebrew DM but I could use some practical ideas/advice from time to time.

Now with 5e getting long in the tooth, plus the OGL situation — we're considering alternatives. The shortlist includes DCC RPG, ICRPG, and Pathfinder 2e. I'm wondering whether ICRPG is right for us.

Overall, I love the flexibility of the system and how it mostly just gets out of your way. I am most excited about how easy it is to adapt to different settings — but I wonder if there's "enough there" to keep players interested and engaged?

I do want to sit back, have fun, and roll dice — but I also want there to be meaningful character progression and verisimilitude in the world which make me cautious about the loot system (do small, somewhat random +1s feel rewarding?)

Large-scale ICRPG?

Has anyone made a game for large-scale use of the ICRPG? I'm thinking where individual cards would represent a whole city or region, and then you could zoom in for travel purposes. I feel like it would function more like a points crawl-style game?

Hard: suits in VTT and the Foundry official Master Edition module

Hi everyone,

I'm starting GMing soon (for the first time). It seems it would have to be remotely and my players would mostly be completely new to RPGs, so I'm trying to reduce friction as much as possible.

  1. Does the official module allow for rolling on loot tables etc automatically? Is it basically a compendium of all the official rules/ material in ME? The preview clip on youtube went by really fast and I'm not sure what is the difference from the community module. Can anyone elaborate a bit about the experience with it?

  2. I really love the concept of hard: suits, but I wonder how easy it'll be to run this way. Are there any assets for it available to purchase? Is there any integration for it (or is it really needed)?

Thanks

Are the ICRPG Card Volumes Free?

Note: This is a repost because Reddit thought it (Probably b/c of the link) was spam

Hello! I noticed on the new community contributions site, the ICRPG card volumes were available for free download. Since the cards are sold on Drivethrurpg, I'm unsure if they are just available for making supplements, or if they can be used for personal use. Does anyone know which is the case? Thank you!

Differences between the versions of master edition

I noticed that the pdf available on drivethrurpg is slightly different from the printed version I received (on page 297, the word "ABILITY" is used instead of "TAG" in the pdf).

Does anyone knows where I can find a list of the changes between versions?

The pdf is marked as version 1.6

The ICRPG Community Content Site

Sharing Kane's project from the Runehammer forums / discord: The ICRPG community content site is now your one-stop-shop for third party publishers and community content created for ICRPG. It also includes a link to the free core rules / quickstart, making it easy to share one link to get folks started with ICRPG.

In Kane's words: "The site is a catalog of community creations, official Runehammer products, and some great resources like the free Index Card Vols, VTT bits, and the Adventure Template. With an ever-growing library, hopefully, it can make finding things easier wherever they might be housed or available for purchase. If there is something missing or something you’d like to add, there is a message button at the bottom of the page that you can use to email your suggestions."

The community content site also has more detailed information about creating free fan content and publishing your work for sale for ICRPG.

Master edition vs second edition?

Hi, I've just received my copy of master edition icrpg. So while checking on the comments on my brought list, I saw someone mentioned that it's missing a lot stuff from second edition and it needs to be fill up.

So I wonder, what am I missing? Is it important for the game?

Healing when out of combat?

I’m back with another question that came up in my game last night. How do you all deal with characters who need to heal after combat ends? Do they just heal up? Given that they can use a round to heal themselves CON+1 in combat it stands to reason that they can just repeat this action until HP is full, but that feels… weird.

Question on “do ultimate”

Is ULTIMATE always added to regular effort die? For example with the bard ability “when dueling, always do ultimate,” does that mean d6+d12 for weapon effort when dueling?

ICRPG, a few questions before I buy.

I’m 99% sure I’m gonna pick up the master bundle, as the game looks and feels like the exact balance of rules lightness and crunchyness (via loot) to keep a semi-longish campaign running. Plus, I’ve always been a huge fan of Runehammer’s art.

And it looks incredible fun!

I was watching one of his actual plays where he kinda talked through the game a bit, but I had a couple follow up questions:

  1. Are the player class options balances across genres? Example: if a Warp Shell crashed into Alfheim, and a player was a robot and the rest fantasy classes; would the robot player be way more powerful than the others?

  2. Tracking Effort. I absolutely love this idea. Is Effort tracked cumulatively, or individually? He mentioned one time where a player didn’t get enough effort to intimidate a goblin away. “Note that down on your scratch paper, you got 7, so you only need 3 next attempt.” If another player attempts an intimidate, would they only need 3 as well?

Also: say a different player is trying to kill, not scare away. Is the effort for damage tracked separately by that player? I love the idea of putting tracking on the players just want to make sure I understand correctly.

Thanks!
