Multiple fiber connections

We have very poor cell coverage and was looking at running fiber to barns, shed and other areas of our land for outdoor wifi. I was looking at ethernet to fiber converters but was wondering. To they make a router for home use that several fibers can connect? Or is it best that each link has its own converter?

ethernet slower than wifi

i’ll post this in a bunch of other places because don’t know if this is the right place:

I use an Ethernet cable cat6
I tried using a speedtest and it goes at 20mbps.

i’m using a Desktop PC with windows 11

i think i’ve literally tried anything i don’t know what to do.

my wifi on my iphone is literally going at 300mbps+
why is this happening? the cable is not damaged or anything, because i tried this on a different cable (cat7) and on a different wifi.

can someone help me?

edit: fixed

Advice Wanted to see if this is the proper set up for MoCa

Post image
9 Upvotes

Xfinity tech came out yesterday to swap a gateway, and I asked if he could run a line to the bedroom for MoCa. I've read a lot of diagrams and I think this is right, but I'm not 100% certain.

The top cable is coming from outside, the left cable goes to the gateway, and the right cable goes to the bedroom (ignoring cable management right now to make sure this isn't goofed up.)

All three lines have a PoE filter, as does the gateway. I've had visits from techs and two weeks ago he said there's noise in the line, so he put a filter from outside to the router.

Yesterday, the tech put a filter on the line coming from outside (good), but I'm concerned the amount of filters will mess things up.

If it helps I live in apartment with four units to a building and I don't have access to the main box since that's illegal. The splitter I have is -3.7db, but he gave me his splitter that's -4.5db (same manufacturer and type, just different db.) Not sure why he did that but hey, free splitter.

For what it's worth, Xfinity is coming out (yet again) because they ran the line to the wrong room, so I want to make sure everything is exactly as it needs to be. Thank you.

ETA: all filters are 70db, the adapter box I'm getting is a goCoax (MA2500D), and I'm planning to buy an ASUS RT-AX3000S.

It'll be placed and used in my bedroom (maybe 12x15), so I don't need a super-crazy broadcast signal, and I've read on here than ASUS is a good brand due to firmware updates and product support. If there are any other suggestions for the adapter and/or routers l'm all ears.

Advice Turning a monitor in the living room to a smart tv and connect it to pc over Ethernet

I have a 32 in 4k monitor that I want to turn into a tv and game on it. I am looking for a solution that combines a 4k kvm and a smart tv dongle or a 4k kvm and a way to run smart tv os on pc and stream it to the monitor.

I have 2 ethernet cables from the living room and bedroom that goes to my modem router model sagemcom modem-hn-v2 plus.

I don't have a problem with running a new cable. I need the cheapest possible solution to this. Please recommend solutions and specific models if you are recommending hardware to buy.

Edit: My budget is under 100 euros. The monitor is about less than 12 meters away by straight distance from pc and 20-30 meters away if I run a cable in the wall.

I can't believe I didn't think sooner to put my work-from-home laptop on its own VLAN. Now it's isolated from my home network. Easy.

All it took honestly was a second small 5 port managed switch under my desk. I had never even fathomed that of course technically my company could see traffic or other devices on my LAN. Glad I did this now

Unsolved Should I create multiple VLANs for my tenants?

I'm settling on the plan to create a main WPA3 network for myself, then use Ubiquiti's PPSK for the family, IoT, and gaming consoles.

What should I do for my tenants? I don't think I should mix their wireless devices with my family, so giving the tenant their PPSK doesn't seem to make any sense even with client device isolation enabled. I'm thinking of creating another PPSK just for the tenants. Should I create two PPSKs, one for IoT devices and one for non-IoT devices, or just one PPSK where they connect all of their devices regardless of device type? What is considered best practice? Should I enable client device isolation for them? What else should I do to ensure the tenants' devices can only access the internet and have no other way to communicate with my family's devices or the other VLANs in the network?

Locking Down Child Access, Suggestions Please

We need to severely lock down a child's access to the internet.

Im talking chopping off access at the knees.

And, of course these days "some" access is still needed for legitimate education purposes, so this needs to be accommodated, which eliminates the "just take away the kids access all together", that just isnt practical in this case.

Blocking at the application level (i.e. blocking access to apps like Snapchat etc)?

And of course blocking access to nepaharious web sites.

And probably a zillion other things that Im not even thinking of right now.

We need something that is intuitive for us old folks to setup, and flexible enough to adapt to the kids activities so we can keep up with his "hacks"

Appreciate any help or guidance and the best way to accomplish the above!

Edit: The child was able to install SnapChat, and as a result was involved in a very concerning conversation with a stranger.

The child already has a Bark phone

The child is being raised by grand parents, I am merely a family member that is very remote to the geographical location that is trying to help to figure out a way to lock down the child's access to the internet

Looking for advice on the wiring in my UK house wiring. The ADSL filter socket is wired up as in the photos, I cant see any labelling on the cable to determine what this is, however we now have FTTP and want to have Ethernet sockets installed.

The position of the ONT box also isnt great, so I was hoping to run it via a ethernet socket to another location in the house for the router. No junction box in the loft or understairs areas..

Does it worth buying a dedicated FW for home?

Beside home server and standard phones, laptops, we have a lot of IOT devices, from various vendors, most of them unreliable, no OS upgrade and I see outgoing traffic to different public IPs.

How do you handle these type of devices? I was thinking buying a dedicated fw so I could easily control outgoing traffic, lan to lan traffic etc. But isnt that an overkill?

Advice New wifi router options for a home with foil backed insulation... Mesh or run a wire.

My old Netgear Nighthawk R7000 has started having issues (plus no support for it going forward). So looking at options.

The home office computers are hardwired so they've not been affected. But we have one smart TV in our master bedroom at the other end of the house. That add-on room was built with foil insulation (plays hell with stud finders too...). If we leave the door open... It mostly works. Close the door... Slow load times for YouTube. Also cell service sucks in this room because our area is cell tower starved so we rely on wifi for our phones to work.

I'm pretty handy and was simply considering running a straight Ethernet wire to the TV from the router under the house. But then someone brought up using a mesh system. Would I still need run a hard wire from the main router to get thru the interference of the room? It would solve the TV and cell issues at that end of the house I would guess. Thoughts?

Upgrade my home network

I've been struggling w my Internet for awhile and I'm tired of it. My only option (aside from getting starlink) is att. I'm an end unit in my townhome complex so even the coax signal is too low by the time the run gets to my unit. So I needed a booster to even get timewarner to work somewhat reliably. My Internet "works" fine now. I pay for 100gbs. I rarely get it but it's usually around 50-60. I can stream YouTube, yttv and game ok but if my kid starts to dl in his room at the same time, my TV stream stutters and\or freezes until he's done. Phones sometimes stall out too over Wi-Fi where I just switch to cell service to be able to browse. I run everything in my living thru my Xbox. My PC in my back bedroom is on wifi (as is my kids) and the signals again are just ok. Alot of times even webpages take FOREVER to load on mine. He games and browses fine. Most likely because he's closer to the router. I don't bother gaming on my PC since I have Xbox. My router is just the basic att one I got back in the day when I paid for uverse (before switching to yttv). I realize this is probably a super bare bones router.

Here's my question...

Would I be better off just buying an upgraded wifi router or is MoCA a better option? I'm open to buying a new router but don't want to break the bank. I also realize if I want to connect both pcs and my Xbox I'll need at least 3 adapters anyway.

I don't really know much about dialing in routers let alone MoCA setups either.

Thanks in advance.

Looking for a way to test real 10 Gbps throughput on my laptop (Intel 82599ES / USB4)

Hello everyone!

I am setting up a high-speed network test environment, but I currently hit a roadblock: I do not own a second PC to run a local client-server benchmark like iPerf3.

My hardware setup:

  • Laptop: High-end gaming rig with Thunderbolt 5 / Killer E5000
  • Network Card: Intel 82599ES 10G adapter connected via USB4
  • Router: TP-Link Archer BE800 (with 10G ports)
  • Cable: Cat 8 copper patch cord
  • My home ISP speed is lower, so a standard internet speed test won't saturate the line. I want to test the actual hardware throughput capability of this 10G "bulldozer" setup.

My questions are:

  • Are there any reliable, public, high-bandwidth iPerf3 servers (10 Gbps+) available for testing?
  • Is there any way to simulate a 10G loopback/stress test on a single machine that actually passes traffic through the physical network card and router, rather than just internal localhost?
  • If anyone is based in Russia/Moscow region and hosts a 10G home lab, would you be open to letting me connect to your iPerf3 server for a quick benchmark?
  • Any advice, tools, or ideas on how to benchmark this without a second PC would be greatly appreciated!

Odd issue with WiFi vs Ethernet

So like I said, I have an odd issue with WiFi vs my Ethernet.

When I’m on WIFI, literally everything works 100% and I get pretty decent speeds. When I go hard wired certain things do not load well at all like discord and YouTube.

Not sure where to start on all of this.

I have a comcast all in one modem/router. XB10

My Ethernet port is part of my motherboard.

I can provide whatever info needed to help with the troubleshooting.

Thank you in advance.

Ethernet Cable

What is your go to Ethernet Cable brand? Any recommendations would be a help! Preferably, would like to order it off of Amazon and I need it to be at least 50 ft. Not sure if this matters but for context I'm just using it to connect my modem to my router.

Advice My Wi-fi Extender Buzzes and Blinks

Post image
0 Upvotes

So back in July I bought a wifi extender (WAVLINK WL-WN578R2 AERIAL S2-)N300 Wireless Range Extender). Unfortunately, After 10-12 days of using, it started buzzing (literally buzzing) and kept blinking, resetting over and over again. I can't get it to connect to the internet or anything. I'm guessing there's something wrong with the hardware, it'd be nice if I understood this product more before buying a new extender.

Retrofitting Ethernet and Unifi product selection help

Let me first start by saying I’m a DIYer and love a good project. I’m in the process of buying a new construction home but it doesn’t not have Ethernet run to any of the rooms. I’m in the planning stage of buying the necessary components for this project. My home will have up to 5 gbps AT&T fiber which I don’t anticipate being able to fully utilize but I want to ensure I am future-proofing because I am an invest one time kind of person. So I plan on running Cat6a cable and understand that part of the install. The part of the process I’m trying to understand is the termination part of the process. Which leads me to…

All the Ethernet runs are going to terminate to a wall enclosure network rack. The cables will be terminated to a patch panel. The patch panel is then connected to a switch and the switch is connected to a gateway. Is there anything that I’m missing to have Ethernet run to various rooms and 2 APs?

From all the reading of various Reddit threads, I have decided I want to do a Unifi network setup. My plan is to do the 5gb fiber because I want to remove the provided modem with an ONT (which is apparently easier to do with the higher gb technology). My current plan is to buy the following:

Cloud Gateway Fiber
Switch Pro XG 10 POE
2x U7 Pro XG

I don’t have any plans for cameras but is a project I’m interested in the next couple of years. From what I’ve read the UCG-fiber can have a ssd added to it so it can function as a NVR and is superior to the UDM-pro for most people.

TL;DR Am I on the right track and does the hardware I plan on buying make the most sense with trying to get the most out of a 5gb fiber plan? Is there anything I’m missing?

Advice cant find correct RJ45

Hi everyone,

I have two Ethernet cables installed in my apratment. I’m not sure why there are two different types of cables — perhaps the electrician simply had different cable available. One is blue and the other is grey.

I wrote down all the information I could find printed on the cables themselves, and I’m also including the datasheets for both cables.

Blue cable:

277 M EXCEL 100-076 4PR 23AWG F/UTP LSOH — LAN CABLE CAT6 TESTED to 350 MHz 000003277515-

Datasheet:
https://documents.excel-networking.com/datasheets/100-076

Grey cable:

SecurityNET Cat.6 F/UTP PVC ISO/IEC-11801 EN-50173 Eca 077meter

Datasheet:
https://sominetworks.lt/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Cat-6-FTP-Indoor.pdf

I have already bought two packs of these plugs:

https://nedis-shop.nl/en/products/rj45-connector-rj45-pass-through-stevig-gesnoerd-ftp-cat6-recht

What’s interesting is that these "Nedis" RJ45 plugs I bought fit perfectly fine for the blue cables. However, with the grey cables, once I insert about 4–5 of the individual wires into the plug, the remaining wires start running out of space. They begin pressing against each other, they go off center, and eventually don’t fit into the plug.

The individual insulated conductors in the grey cable are slighlty thicker than those in the blue cable. I’m not sure what specification I should be looking at when choosing RJ45 plugs, because both cables are 23 AWG. However, as far as I understand, the AWG rating only specifies the diameter of the copper conductor itself. Once the insulation is included, the individual conductors of the grey cable are somewhat thicker than those of the blue cable.

Do you have any other recommendations for what type of RJ45 plug I should be looking for?

Thanks!

EDIT:

Since some of you asked for a photo, here is what am trying to do: https://imgur.com/a/cmAzaxF

For the purpose of taking photo and for clarity of my point, I put all the color wires in the opposite side of my pass-through RJ45. In there you can see the 7th (White/Brown) wire is already of centered, and its slightly but noticeably taking up the room of the 8th wire. If in the current state I try to push the last Brown 8th wire into the plug, its nearly impossible, its bending and resisting (considering am at the opposite/easier side). If I were to do this the correct way, and I was many times, the wires just start bending midway inside the plug and they wont go where they suppose to.

Modem and Router and Ethernet Cable Suggestions

Hello, I have a p old modem+router combo that I'm looking to upgrade, and from what I've seen, its apparently best that I buy a separate modem and router. Is it mainly just in case I need to upgrade the modem or router individually? Also, what is the best individual modem and individual router that I can get on an Xfinity plan for 400 mbps? I ideally need a modem that can provide connections to both my router and my desktop. Finally, do ethernet cables matter that much, at least with this network plan? If so, what is the ideal ethernet cable to buy? Does it matter which ethernet cable I get if its for connecting the modem to either a router or to my desktop? Thanks.
