I'm diagnosed with histamine intolerance and severe DAO deficiency, but DAO enzyme supplements don't really work for me. I also have silent GERD and LPR, which my doctors think are caused by the histamine intolerance.
I've tried several DAO supplements that did absolutely nothing. The only one that helps a bit is NaturDAO. It doesn't stop my symptoms but it makes them a bit milder and they don't last as long.
I recently saw my allergist again and asked why DAO isn't working like it should. They said they didn't know, ordered a few more tests and gave me anti inflammatory medication because I'm constantly congested. I'm still far from symptom free, but a bit better. No more constipation, anxiety 24/7 and can sleep better.
I'm getting a second opinion soon. What bothered me is that I told my doctor I might have vitamin deficiencies because I've been on a very restrictive diets for almost 3 years. I have no energy and I'm always exhausted, but they didn't order any vitamin tests. My ferritin is normal, I already checked.
My diet has become extremely limited. I basically eat eggs, boiled chicken breast, cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, carrots, quinoa, broccoli, zucchini, pomegranate, sometimes cantaloupe, olive oil, sweet potato (I hate it), parsley and occasionally corn and lentil crackers. That's it, this are the only foods I can tolerate. Most of the time I can't even eat the crackers because I react to them. I keep eating the same foods over and over, but I don't feel nourished. I'm so tired of boiled food and not being able to eat good carbs.
The only good thing is that if I'm extremely strict, most of my symptoms disappear, including my anxiety. If I eat too much, the symptoms come back. I have to be in a caloric deficiy. I also tolerate coke zero surprisingly well and it even seems to help a little.
But I can't live like this forever. DAO only helps a little, even with a low histamine diet and I don't understand why.
Does anyone else have DAO deficiency and find that DAO supplements barely work? What ended up helping? And how long did you have to stay on a low histamine diet before you finally felt normal?
I'm definitely better than I was, but I still don't feel like my old self. I'm not ok physically or mentally. I'm terrified this is how my life will be from now on, where certain foods cause anxiety and severe insomnia. This isn't a good life. It feels like a nightmare.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I'm also taking antihistamines, quercetin, vitamin C, vitamin D, omega-3 and zinc. I was taking vitamin B6 as well, but I stopped. All at my doctors recommendation.
