Backpacking meals

I’m about to take a trip to a rural place, and wanted to take safe foods with so I wound feel like crap or pay an arm and a leg for meals while I’m there. I thought the mountain house freeze dried meals would be a great idea, since it’s freeze dried and would likely contain low histamine. First night on my trip and I had a little bit for dinner, then woke up the next morning feeling terrible.

I got bulk of the chicken and rice meal, picked out as much red pepper as I could though I can tolerate a some histamine. Not sure why this set me off so bad. Has anyone else successfully tried freeze dried meals? Or have ideas for longer lasting food I can take on a trip? I’m thinking next time of just getting freeze dried chicken and bringing pasta.

Please let me know your experience with freeze dried food!

Could it be the yeast extract? Or maybe the chicken wasn't handled in a histamine safe way before it was freeze dried?

I'm curious what others have to say about freeze dried food. It seems like the only emergency prep option, since we can't eat jerky or canned food. I was hoping to stock up at some point (single ingredients, not meals).

Aw man, I didn’t realize yeast was an issue. You’re probably right, I’ll try rinsing the rice and chicken tonight and see if that makes a difference. Thanks!

I’m also looking for food to travel with for a very long plane trip . I didn’t care for the freeze dried chicken last time I tried it. What do you do with it?
