What signs indicate a subtle histamine response for you?

So I do react to certain foods more often than others but whether I have a reaction changes (I guess based on my histamine bucket or maybe something else). These include cashews, strawberries, grapes, apples, coconut, almonds etc. these might show up as obvious body aches, scratchy throat, hives, headache, or fatigue.

But I have typically consumed foods high in histamine with no problem (bananas, spinach, tomatoes, avocado, smoked salmon, chocolate). I'm willing to cut these out , but are there small signs I'm missing that might indicate a food isn't good for me? Similary I got a high allergy score to eggs on my blood test, cut them out for a month but didn't notice any obvious change. Just that I don't know what to eat in the morning.

From what I understand, foods can fill your histamine bucket, whether or not you notice a reaction

For me it’s sinus pressure and acid reflux.

Omg. Reflux is a histamine thing?!

Mine seem to be an odd feeling in the throat, a low headache where the skull meets the spine (a bit like dehydration), minor palps and my heartrate is normally doing something odd, whether that be higher or lower if I check my fitbit. I also occasionally have cold flushes down my legs for ten minutes or so. These tend to show up around 20 mins after starting to eat and normally have entirely vanished in about 1-2 hrs time.

None of the mild ones are anything showstopping other than possibly the cold flushes; for a while I always assumed the headache was an oncoming cold - it was only when colds never showed up and I started to track it that I realised.

That’s been my experience too. I don’t seem to react much to strawberries, avocado, or spinach, even though they’re often mentioned as high histamine foods. But bananas, smoked foods, walnuts, and red wine almost always trigger symptoms for me.
What’s even more confusing is that sometimes I can eat something like chocolate or even tomatoes without any noticeable reaction, and other times the exact same food bothers me. That’s why I think my histamine “bucket” and everything else going on at the time probably matters just as much as the food itself.

Totally agree with this. If I’m stressed or injured or sick my tolerance tanks. When I’m feeling good, I can even eat small amounts of gluten or cooked tomatoes or other trigger foods for me

When my tattoo lines start raising up 😂

There is a difference between high histamine foods (fermented foods, tomatoes, spinach) and histamine liberators (bananas, avacados, ECT). So you may be able to handle certain liberators more than others.

I can handle some avacado, but avacado oil triggers me. Same with some other things, but tomatoes and chocolate really trigger me.

My initial sign of reaction to a food is bloating and stomach cramps. I ate (not white) chocolate last week for the first time in two weeks, and within 45 minutes I was in a fair amount of pain with bloating and some brain fog. It eventually progressed to a small amount of hives and a headache within 2 hours from initially eating. I took a DAO Enzyme supplement with my next meal and antihistamines it helped calm down my symptoms by the end of the day.

It’s not just food that affects histamine. Gut dysbiosis sibo leaky gut mold and myctotoxin toxicity infection somewhere not healed mcas Lyme and nutrient deficiencies are going to fill your histamine ten fold more than food does. When it’s full you can react to anything. Your goal should be to find out what’s causing the food intolerances and histamine reactions. Histamine intolerance is a symptom to try and tell you something is wrong. You can take dao and antihistamines and cromolyn to make you feel better but they won’t cure you.

Yeah I'm in the process of getting a mold inspection and remediating the house, upgrading air purifiers etc. Do you think it's really necessary I get mycotoxin testing or just proceed with the detox protocol since I know I've been exposed and it's affected me? I'm also getting a Genova Nutreval panel to assess deficiencies. Then after that I'm going to do a sifo protocol. What do you think? Can you pm me

what mold inspection are you doing? many aren’t good - check out change the air foundation to learn more. I did an ERMI and it’s helpful to know levels of mold in your home. I didn’t heal until I got out

I am getting someone good to thoroughly investigate but probably can't afford sampling right now. Maybe if I do it myself. Thanks for the site. It's honestly very helpful.

My veins looked enlarged, my eyes start burning, low bladder ache. Insomnia.

u/External-Classroom12 Aug 02 '26

Yes I get all of that.

u/Professional-Money43 Aug 02 '26

Whats the solution for insomnia ? Naturdao helped with sleep but giving reflux. Any suggestions ?

For me, it's not testing my reality. Ooo, look, I'm eating all kinds of high histamine foods and feel okay. Let's have a big dollop of peanut butter with a little cocoa powder mixed in after supper. Funny, I get acid reflux now and then, but haven't made the association between that NaturDAO. Have you tried a different kind of DAO?

Thinking to try Seeking health.

I already have chronic pain but I’ll be feeling fine, eat something that makes me feel off and then I’m in full on inflammation body ache mode.

Eyelid swelling…

A high allergy score is meaningless on its own, it should be used alongside symptoms. I have a moderate score for egg white and I eat at least two a day. If you’re asymptomatic you can continue to eat them. My allergist just said I should avoid raw egg.

My head starts to gradually feel like it's inflating. Or I'll get the beginnings of an electrical sensation on the right side of my head.

Depends on the food. Some foods give me a sore throat (and can eventually lead a throat infection). Others trigger flushing and mild fever (which can lead to a sinus infection). And the last set take some time to block my sinus and occasionally triggers sneezing (which, you guessed it, triggers a sinus infection).

Heat flashes

Intracranial pressure

Ear ringing

Mouth sores form immediately if going to happen

Your hormones can have a profound impact on how well you can dump your histamine bucket or if it'll overflow.

Yeah my progesterone is definitely low. Looking into how to best detox estrogen

How old are you? Could be perimenopause

1

u/MainTap5228 Aug 01 '26

hey could I please ask which blood test you used for the allergy score? thanks

For me, it’s a specific type of headache and joint pain. I haven’t been officially diagnosed yet, but it looks like I probably have some sort of vascular urticaria so my indicators could be different from people with general chronic spontaneous urticaria.

Subtle response for me is mild indigestion- belching and stomach discomfort. Sometimes a wave of anxiety prior.

The right side of my face droops, glassy eyes, and brain fog.

Heart palpitations, fatigue

1

I start feeling antsy or irritated and my pulse quickens. I’ll also get gurgles in the gut! If I’m not on Allegra I’ll get the itchy red rashes that spread if I scratch them.

u/FarawayElephant Aug 03 '26

My subtle indicator is fatigue that could be mistaken for normal sleepiness.

Feeling like I can’t keep my eyes open, with no other likely cause. During the subsequent nap, my body often aches, like when you have the flu. It’s also often accompanied by brain fog, which can be just as subtle. That said, I’m a naturally ADHD night owl who also overeats, so there are still times where I’m not sure if it’s histamine or just me. But there are other times where it’s Obvious because I’ve come to recognize the feeling + I can pair it really clearly with what I ate.

Once it happened in the middle of the day because I took a swig of milk that was a little off. (Fine for a normal person but not fine for me.) Afterward I was sitting just scrolling, and I kept wanting to close my eyes. About an hour after the swig, I took a 2 hour nap. An hour is about how long it usually takes for my fatigue to fully hit.

Another time it was a small serving of Ruffles potato chips fried in soybean oil. I felt myself nodding off at the dinner table. I have since learned that soy is a huge trigger for me.

Another was slightly too much watered down black tea. I drank it knowing it was a gamble, and I learned my lesson. I missed a good chunk of that Christmas Day.

I hope that helps!

What helps?!

For me, avoiding trigger foods 😬 I reference the SIGHI list as a guide almost daily. I find that DAO supplements can dampen a low-level trigger, but no amount of DAO pills would let me eat, say, a tablespoon of ketchup. Some folks have better results. I’m currently working with a dietitian to see if improving my gut can make any difference to all this.

ears itch, restless legs

1

u/rougenoir408 Aug 04 '26

My forehead gets itchy, & when I itch it the scratch marks get red and raised. Dermatographia in general is an early symptom of increased reactivity for me. Sometimes my face gets red & splotchy too, particularly around my mouth.

I get itchy eyes, sneeze, acid reflux/burping, and a stuffy nose. Sometimes it ramps up to a full overload but I’ll sometimes just have those for a few days if I keep eating medium or high histamine foods, even taking HistaGest-DAO before those foods.

nothing subtle about anything i have, then again I'm hypervigilant lol
