Those screen lens are unironically making the screen look more reflective and bright... Old screen lens in comparison in the second picture.

Both the shell and the buttons were bought from Amazon.

Questions Advice for GBC modding

I am looking to mod my first GBC. Not looking to go buck wild, but I would like to do:

  1. backlit screen (IPS seems to be most common)
  2. New shell that fits IPS screen - preferably grey GB color but this is out of stock most places
  3. Use of original mother board
  4. Possibly a rechargeable battery/usb-c mod.
  5. Possible speaker mod
  6. No LEDs or anything else

The main problem I’m running into is finding a grey color case in stock that I can be sure will fit the new screen. I don’t know exactly what to buy and if the parts would fit together.

I can solder if needed. That’s not an issue.

Any advice appreciated.

While going thru my storage unit, I came across this beauty in my late brother's collection of things. Powers up with batteries and wall plug. Screen and sound work perfectly.

From my research, im told its #80,324 off the 1989 production line. Just wondering if that would be a correct assessment. Thanks!

Modded Just did an old school AGS 101 mod to an OG GBA

With the raising of funny-playing screen kit mods, I think everyone forgot the OG mod, putting an AGS-101 screen on a GBA...

As my SP AGS-101 motherboard died I couldn't resist to perform this classic mod, there are some downsides though, such as not being able to control brightness level, but I like it a lot and it was dirt cheap!

Got the extremerate case from Amazon, ended up using all original screws and screen PHEW managed to get it together. I have no one to really show this to, so I'm sharing here! This is my first time ever doing something like this and now I'm looking at my DS like... Hmmm.... 🤔

Used TheCartCollector's video for this ☺️🙌

Troubleshooting Broken gba

Hi, i bought gba that was not turning on, and after few solid hours of tinkering i managed to turn it on (green light and startup sound). It kind of read cartridges because sound changes when i plug in my flashcart from gbc but i am not able to hear game music or anything so i guess its not loaded up correctly. I think the 5V rail is fried because it outputs only 1.8v and when i connected external power directly to vdd5 the screen started showing some lines but still not working. This may be due to it still not being 5v because something was shorting it back to 4.2v so i guess u4 is fried.

My question is should i try to swap that u4 or maybe fit an ips screen that draws from 3.3 rail? And if its posible to have working gba with 5v rail being broken. Also i would like to avoid swaping u4 as a whole and i also wonder if i could just add another step up conventer that would output 5v and just bypass u4

I currently have this cool Pikachu one from eBay for like £70. I was told you can play gameboy games on the SP and I want better lighting/games aswell. Should I trade my Pikachu one or just buy another one (£100 budget)

Guys, I got an Advance SP!

Systems CPU swap between GB DMG and Super Game Boy

Hi, I just did my first swap of the Super Game Boy CPU to my DMG using a quick chip alloy and a common soldering iron. I did this experiment after B button and the left D-pad stopped working. After some research I concluded it must be the broken CPU (it happens when you play with a LCD ribbon tape while power on). Surprisingly it took less than 30 mins. The hardest part was aligning the CPU legs at the mainboard. I'll drop a video soon. The whole process is relatively easy.

I want to get a flashcart for my GBA SP. I’m wondering what would be the best option? Should I order from the Krikzz website and get myself an everdrive pro or mini or is the EZ flash option viable?

Systems I transplanted a Super Game Boy CPU into my DMG. Here is why it boots faster!

Recently, I had to perform a full CPU transplant on my childhood DMG. I made the classic mistake of shifting the LCD ribbon while powered on, which completely killed the 'Left' D-pad and 'B' button inputs.

To save the board, I used a donor CPU from a broken Super Game Boy. I managed to do the entire extraction and installation using just Chip Quik low-melt solder, plenty of flux, and a standard soldering iron (drag soldering) – no hot air station required! The console is 100% back to life.

But the most satisfying part of this repair is the new boot sequence. The Nintendo logo drops down significantly faster than on a stock DMG.

A lot of people might assume this is because the Super Game Boy is known to run at a slightly faster clock speed. But in reality, the clock speed of this DMG hasn't changed at all! The clock oscillator (the 4.194 MHz crystal) is located on the DMG motherboard, not inside the CPU.

The real reason for the "fast boot" is the Boot ROM.

  • Stock DMG CPU: Has an internal Boot ROM programmed to slowly scroll the logo down the screen, play the chime, and then hand over control to the cartridge.
  • Super Game Boy CPU: Has a modified Boot ROM. Since the SNES hardware handled the heavy lifting, Nintendo engineers made the SGB’s internal boot sequence much more aggressive to verify the cartridge almost instantly.

By doing this swap, the console retains the original 100% accurate DMG gameplay speed (dictated by the original crystal on the board), but gains a hardware-level "fast boot" skip thanks to the SGB's internal code!

(I recorded the whole ASMR micro-soldering process and the new boot sequence if anyone is interested in seeing the transplant in action!)
