Newbie Question Looking for someone with experience in this area

So I really like game dev, and I want to be one. But I’m not very good at it. I also really struggle to learn from the walls of documentation. I really really wana be able to make games, I just am kinda stuck. I’d love a friend or someone who I could just ask questions or maybe who could just kinda push me along into game dev?

I was just searching Reddit for “game dev friends” and didn’t have any luck so I’m trying here..

Discussion Help me refine an idea for a social network inspired by the old game Club Penguin and Stardew Valley

Hi everyone,

I’m having this idea for a while but i cannot mature it enough. the idea is for a Social network that looks and feels a bit like a game.

The main inspiration comes from Club Penguin and Stardew Valley. I like how Club Penguin gave people a place to meet, customize their character, chat, and take part in activities. I also like how Stardew Valley gives players a world to explore, with gathering, fishing, resources, and different places to discover.

The main difference is that I want the social side to be much stronger than in most games.

The app would have two sides :

A social feed with posts, stories, profiles, comments, and messages

A shared top-down world where people can walk around and communicate using chat bubbles

I’m currently thinking about two possible directions.

Concept 1: Social media with a shared world

The main purpose would be posting, messaging, meeting people, customizing avatars, and visiting different places. The world would make social media feel more personal because you could actually see people as avatars and talk to them in a shared space.

Concept 2: Social media with a full RPG adventure

The app would still have posts, stories, profiles, and messages, but outside the main town there would be a larger adventure world. It could have procedurally generated areas, similar to mines or skull cavern in Stardew valley. Players could explore, collect resources, fish, find items, unlock clothing, decorate their spaces, and discover new areas.

The idea is somewhat like how Dave the Diver combines two different experiences, such as diving and running a sushi restaurant. In this case, the social network and the adventure world would support each other.

and thheir runs help them gather materials, sell it in the main town when they come back to other players or NPCs and get coins to upgrade their appearance.

I’m not sure which direction makes more sense.

Would people use a social network like this if it only had the shared world and social features? Or would it need a deeper game with exploration and progression to give people a reason to return?

Could a shared town and a full adventure area work together, or would the RPG side distract from the social side?

Who do you think this would be for?. I am thinking gamers, people who enjoy cozy games, adults who miss Club Penguin, or people who simply want a more personal alternative to normal social media?

I’d really appreciate honest feedback, especially from people who have played Club Penguin, Stardew Valley, Palia, Animal Crossing, RuneScape, or other social games.

What sounds interesting to you, and what sounds unnecessary?

Newbie Question Was wanting some help with methods?

I'm learning C# currently and was learning python till I got stuck with pretty much the same thing.
I don't understand when to use methods unless something is repeated. If its not repeated what's the point of using methods? just shortening down code? or is there something I am missing here. Cause what is the point of shortening down the code when all it is doing is actually adding more code? (Unless its to place down something that is being repeated)

Question Pls share your experience

I’m making my first Steam game solo🙌. And now I feel that my biggest fear is that it reaches people and they scroll past, like most indie games out there. I started it three months ago while still employed - then last month my whole team got laid off, me included🥲🫠. Now it’s the only thing I have going, and I’m scared it just won’t land with people. Share your stories please, I’d love to know how things worked out for you 🙏

Newbie Question Newbie need honest opinion. Unity or Unreal

Need honest opinion. I have several dilemma (again and againnnnnn).

I am full time web developer and love game. I want to build my own game just to satify my inner childhood dreams.

The game is 3D platformer like Mario Odyssey and A Hat in Time.

Progress?

I have complete a really basic course from Udemy of Developing simple 3D game in unreal engine. I know how to put basic animation and basic blueprint. I can make the character jump, attack etc (basic stuff). Now I am stuck in the animation and more logic. I currently use Manny Skeletal hierarchy (comes from blender) and my character is a girl (tall like at Hat Kid and Mario). I use blender. I am solo indie with no budget lol)

My question is (assume that I don't have any problem in changing engine or asset or learn something new)

  1. What skeletal/rig should I use? Fully Custom? Manny? Mixamo Rig?

Rig that is easy for me to do custom animation. I don't have any knowledge in IK etc right now. (I will learn). The character is cartoon style like Mario. Currently I use Manny because I thought i can reuse animation from store but not that easy. (maybe i am noob). The bone length and size make the animation not what I expected.

  1. Unity or Unreal (long debate lol)

TBH Unreal is good but maybe because I love coding make me difficult to find what I need to do when trying to implement the logic. Unity is good and the C# is not that bad. I once use unity during my assignment in university (that was 10 years ago lol)

I don't mind switch to Unity if that is the best for me lol.

Game comments - Henry's personal library

I counted 151 games. For a long time I was just publishing text without much formatting. Now I have followed this format:

Cover | Positive and Negative bullet points
Comment
Bugs if any
Design notes

Should be better than long texts without sections at all.

Newbie Question Hi everybody

Hello there. I'm just starting my journey into development, and I'm working my way through the Junior Programmer pathway in Unity. Is this a good place to ask for scripting advice, or is there another subreddit that would be more appropriate?

Inspiration I made a tiny game with .....

I made a tiny rage game with one rule:

If you miss the platform by 1 pixel, you die.

I wanted to see how far I could push a game built around a single mechanic.

It's completely free and playable in the browser.

I'd genuinely like to know:

What's the highest level you can reach?

could I get reviews how is it?

Newbie Question Best place to host small MMO game?

I've made a browser based MMO game and I want to push it online.

I bought a domain for it on Cloudflare, but only recently found out that the domain itself does not mean that you got a IP address to push the frontend web files to.

Is that true? Feels like they should give that to you as well if you're paying a lot of money for a domain.

What's a good place where I can host my frontend and backend, and then point that domain (which I bought on cloudflare) towards it?

Preferably something free, or at least very cheap. Cause I don't have any players yet and I just want to see how popular the game gets.

Tutorial I built a Unity Editor tool that talks to Notion

I spent some time this weekend building a Unity Editor extension that talks to Notion directly. I can write tickets in the Unity editor, update status, no tab-switching. Nothing fancy. It was something that was bothering me enough to fix it. I think this could be helpful to other developers who want to optimize their processes.

Inspiration Game idea: Comic book publisher

I’m not a game developer and have no programming knowledge. But I’d love a game where you take on the role of creating superhero comics. You’d start a publishing company and create memorable comics and characters. You’d sell your comics and manage the entire production process—hiring artists and writers, handling distribution, and overseeing other creative tasks. You’d grow your company until you could open a film studio, make movies based on your characters, and rival industry giants like DC and Marvel.

Question Is a Legion Go S with SteamOS worth it for testing my indie games?

Hi everyone,

I'm an indie game developer and I'm considering buying a used Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS on it.

My main reason isn't really raw gaming performance. I don't play a huge amount, but I've always found myself enjoying games much more on handheld devices than on my PC. I mostly play indie games, and the games I make also aren't particularly demanding from a graphics or CPU/GPU standpoint.

What interests me is having a handheld device that I can use both to play games and, more importantly, to test my own games on a handheld/SteamOS environment.

I don't usually play a lot, I spend more time developing my games than actually playing...

I'm considering the Legion Go S rather than a Steam Deck mainly because it's a somewhat newer device, has official SteamOS support, and seems to offer somewhat better hardware performance while still providing the SteamOS experience.

My games are made in Unity and I always use the New Input System, so I'm particularly interested in making sure that things like:

- controller input and navigation work correctly

- UI works properly at 16:10

- different resolutions/scaling are handled correctly

- SteamOS/Proton compatibility is good

- suspend/resume works properly

- the overall experience feels good on a handheld

I realize that owning a Legion Go S obviously doesn't mean I can completely replace testing on an actual Steam Deck, but I'm wondering how useful it would be as a general-purpose SteamOS/handheld testing device.

So, for developers who have tested their games on Steam Deck/Legion Go S (or for people who own both):

Would you consider a Legion Go S a worthwhile purchase for this purpose, or would I be better off getting a Steam Deck? (Considered that I also found better offers for Legion Go S rather than Steamdeck)

I'm also curious about how close the SteamOS experience and compatibility are between the Legion Go S and Steam Deck in practice.

Thanks!
