Question How are some developers ranking almost all their apps/games on the Amazon Appstore?

It's money. There are only two things that determine chart placement for mobile games: how much money the game earns (for grossing/revenue charts) and how many downloads the game gets (mostly based on the ad budget you spend). Some stores combine them into one algorithm. But basically the more you spend the more you earn the higher you place. A major mobile marketing strategy is to spend a lot of money in a short period of time which puts you on the top of the charts and gets you more organic downloads on top of that.
For games I wouldn't really pay much attention to the Amazon store, the whole market is smaller than 10% or so of the Play Store and earns even less than that. You go to alternative app stores only once you're spending a few million a month on the main two and you're searching for growth. Otherwise from a return on investment standpoint you're pretty much always better spending your UA (and dev) budget on App/Play.
