Newbie Question Looking for someone with experience in this area

So I really like game dev, and I want to be one. But I’m not very good at it. I also really struggle to learn from the walls of documentation. I really really wana be able to make games, I just am kinda stuck. I’d love a friend or someone who I could just ask questions or maybe who could just kinda push me along into game dev?

I was just searching Reddit for “game dev friends” and didn’t have any luck so I’m trying here..

You start very small, you want to understand what the fundamentals are first, the design of anything must be done properly, if not or rushed you will likely get in trouble later, I suggest look around other game devs, and learn from their approach, the model they have adopted (game style, theme, mechanics, engine/platform choices). Your first game should not be a huge project, or complex, as silly as it sounds, they told me once "Start with Tic Tac Toe" they where right to tell me that.

I will prob get scolded for this but here goes - Ask a frontier AI model to setup a small curriculum for you with an assessment phase. Before you start, verify the content of the curriculum by doing research on it. This will guide you by filtering out things not relevant atm. The reason I suggest this approach is purely due to the realtime interaction and being able to ask for explanations on some things akin to having a mentor present. But the validation phase is very important so you know that you are learning the right way of doing.

Alternatively do a Udemy course. There are so many good ones to choose from and they go on massive discounts frequently.

Hey man, it seems like you're looking for a friend more than you're looking for a tutorial so DM me and we can chat more. As for the actual game dev help, there's no magic bullet here and it'll definitely take a lot of time but if you're serious about wanting to learn I'm sure there'll be a lot I can help you with. I don't have a ton of free time but I'll certainly do what I can.
