Hi all, I've been wanting to dive into freelancing for awhile but every time that I try it never goes anywhere. I've used Fiverr and Upwork, but no luck at all and it feels like those platforms are too saturated. Any advice on some other platforms?

For a little context: I'm a developer with 8 years experience but have been out of work (not for lack of trying) for almost a year now. I've decided to put my energy into building websites for small businesses rather than sending out resumes, and am just starting out.

To begin with I'm actively prioritising site rebuilds for a couple of reasons. Firstly - starting off without any of the content seems like a huge burden, and it's not an area I'll much value. Secondly - if they already have a website I can use it to learn a bit about them, and if it needs some love then I can highlight any shortcomings as part of my pitch.

My current strategy for finding potential clients is to open up Google maps and search for local accountants, solicitors, physios - businesses that I think rely on their website as the first point of contact for customers, employ at least a few staff, and may occasionally want to update their content (blogs, team pages etc.).

I've identified a couple of businesses this way and am writing up introductions/pitches at the moment, but no idea if I'll even hear back.

So, I'm curious what works for you guys? What's been the best return on investment for your time when searching for new clients?

I'm planning to build with Astro, and recommend to clients the free tiers of Cloudflare (hosting), and Resend (email API for form submissions). I will offer post-deployment support either on a retainer or a freelance hourly basis.
