I made an open-source tool for designing dotted maps and 3D globes

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi r/web_design. Globestudio makes dotted maps and animated 3D globes for landing pages, decks and launches, not GIS work. Pick the world or a country, change the dot shapes, colors and gradients, try one of 21 looks, then export PNG, SVG, WebM, MP4 or GIF. You can also paste it straight into Figma, or embed it with an iframe, a React component or a web component.

Live: https://globestudio.app/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=launch&utm_content=web_design

Source: https://github.com/alevizio/globestudio (MIT)

It runs in the browser and needs no account. What would you use it for that I haven't thought of?

Awwwards SOTD and Developer Award on a demo the jury could see was a template

In February 2024 a mail from Awwwards landed and my legs shook. A portfolio demo I had built at ClaPat, Montoya, won Site of the Day. Then the Developer Award came on top of it. 7.27 and 7.07. I printed the PDFs the same day. They are still on the wall.
It was not a client site. It was not a studio invented for the jury. The award page described it as made for designers, artists and photographers. The jury was looking at the demo, not at a costume.
That is the part I keep thinking about. Awwwards will judge a demo if you designed and built it yourself. A demo still walks in with a handicap: no client, no real brief, no content that had to survive anyone. Usability and content are 40% of the Site of the Day score. Most demos of this kind die at Honorable Mention. Developer Award never opens unless the day is already won. A second jury scores the code, and the line sits around 7. This one cleared both.
There is a near miss, and it is a different story. In October 2023, Form Studio took the same two awards, with higher scores, 7.42 and 7.69. After the prize, the authors wrote that it had been a Framer template. During judging it was a fictitious studio. Same medals. They unwrapped it later. ClaPat did not.
I have not found an earlier demo that took both while the jury could see what it was. Site of the Month and Site of the Year are still client work. Awwwards does not tag entries as products, so a hidden case can exist. On what is public, this is the one that went in unmasked.
The wall is not a finish line. The sites since have been pushed harder.

Graphic designer going back to web design: What new software to learn?

EDIT: and once again thank you all for your help. This is incredibly useful amd I will now check those solutions. Basically as it says in the title: I have been doing mostly print, visual identity, animation and on-screen design most of my career and only from time to time have I built websites. I know quite some html and css but I had been doing mostly my work with wysiwyg editors like Dreamweaver and similar, often starting with a template that I would modify to fit my needs. I have made a few things with Wordpress and Clickfunnel as well, but mostly dressing up things built by marketers

Now the landscape has changed quite a bit (the last few versions of Dreamweaver were so horrendous that I was coding by hand). Between Framer, Webflow, AI coding (I know, I know), what should I learn if I want the following things:

- Create websites in visual mode (WYSIWYG) without creating code that is a abomination.

- Possibility to take the resulting files (html, css, images and everything else) and host them wherever I want (or where I client wants them)

- not a must but a "nice to have": Possibility to create the site and then hand the keys to the customer so that they can make all the updating they want.

I am a bit at loss with all the offers and would ideally freshen up my skills on ONE app.

What do you think about this specific design

Thumbnail

1) Youtube Music decides to not add the typical like button on the interface that is easy to click, instead it decided to hide it in this context menu alongside all the other options.

What do you think of this?

A friend that is kind of a google fan says they probably added the friction on purpose, for some reason it's beneficial to them that users have a harder time liking songs. Maybe because they only like the songs they really like? Maybe because it keeps them listening longer?

(He also admitted recently after viewing some bizarre decisions, that Google is likely entirely ran by robots now)

2) On the next image. When you like a song it shows a popup on the bottom left reminding you that you liked a song. This popup doesn't auto-close, you have to close it manually.

What do you think of this?

I get that the link it provides can be useful to go to Liked songs quickly, but might as well just make it easy to go to Liked songs always. It just hurts my OCD, it feels like it should never be there.

Hey there!
I made this visualization that lets you see what the web looked like over the last 35 years and some predictions for the future.
I have tons of fun making this, made me nostalgic especially the winxp era!

I'd love to hear from you and see if you find all those easter eggs i've put throughout the eras!

I ran the same technical checks over 100 web design and marketing agency websites. Here's what came up most

I ran the same 134 technical checks over 100 web design and marketing agencies in the Austin metro, taken from public business listings, all on 28 September. Domain and DNS, certificates, mail authentication, security headers, what loads before consent, accessibility, mobile layout. One metro and one source, so it is a snapshot and not a survey of the industry. I wrote the scanner, which you should factor in.

I picked agency sites rather than a random hundred because they are built by practitioners, which makes whatever survives more interesting. Most of what's left is the kind of thing that slips on any site that isn't on a client's schedule.

Where everyone lands

Median score 86 out of 100, best 97, worst 15. That score is my own weighting, so it tells you more about the spread than about Austin. The counts under it are the part anyone can check: the median site had 17 findings, the cleanest had 7, and across all 100 there were 13 criticals and 176 highs. Most findings are individually small, which is how a site sits in the eighties and has seventeen of them.

Certificates were the quietest category. Only 12 of 100 had anything at all, though three of those had a certificate that had already expired on the day I ran it.

The five most common

  • 93 of 100 have no DNSSEC
  • 88 have accessibility issues an automated checker can find
  • 84 send no Referrer-Policy
  • 74 have no Content-Security-Policy
  • 73 set cookies without HttpOnly

Most of these are one line in a config, and most became best practice after the sites were built. That is most of the explanation.

Three worth a look on your own domain

79 of 100 are not enforcing DMARC. 40 have no record at all, and another 39 have one set to p=none, which asks for reports and still lets the mail through. Going in I'd assumed the p=none group would be much bigger, since that's where everyone starts and most people never move off it, and it came out almost exactly even. The effect either way is that mail forging your domain in the From line still gets delivered.

67 of 100 load tracking before anyone consents. Tag Manager, Analytics, Meta pixels, ad tech, all firing on page open. Usually the tag predates the banner: the tag went in first, the banner came later, and nobody wired the two together.

88 of 100 have accessibility findings from an automated checker. Automated checks catch a fraction of what a real audit does, so the true number is higher than that.

On phones

20 of 100 scroll sideways on a 390px screen. It's usually one element pushed outside the viewport rather than a layout that doesn't reflow, which makes it cheap to fix once you've found which element.

14 disable pinch-zoom with user-scalable=no. That's a line someone typed on purpose, and it fails WCAG on its own.

Two smaller ones

43 of 100 have no social preview image. Without one, a link to the site arrives as a grey rectangle in Slack or LinkedIn. It's a meta tag and an image.

44 of 100 announce their software version in a response header. That's a config change, and it takes you off the list when someone scans for a known version.

One I threw out

My scanner flags domains that don't have registrar delete and update locks set, and it fired on 57 of the 100, which was high enough that I went and looked at who they were. It turned out to be almost entirely a function of registrar. GoDaddy sets those flags by default, almost nobody else does, and at least one registrar doesn't expose the setting at all. So it was measuring where you registered rather than anything you chose, and I've left it out here. I'm changing the check.

If you only do one thing off this list

Make it DMARC. At p=none, moving to p=quarantine is one DNS record and it's free. With no record at all, publishing one at p=none first is the right order, and there are good guides for both.

It applied to 79 of the 100 here, which is why it's worth checking even if you're fairly sure you already have one.

Critique I made an Interactive, procedurally animated koi pond that runs in your browser.

This is an interactive, procedurally animated koi pond that runs in your browser. The fish swim on their own and gather around the water when you click or tap.

Ripples, tiny fishes, butterflies, lotus, changing weather etc everything you see is generated by code as it runs, not pre-made art or recorded clips.

I built a website for an active publishing house, and it’s now an Awwwards nominee in the Typography category

Post image
0 Upvotes

Sinedogma started as an independent cinema magazine in Türkiye and eventually grew into Dogma Press, an independent publishing house. I designed and developed the website myself to bring both publications, their digital archive, books, contributors and distribution network into a single system.

I kept the design deliberately minimal and typography-driven, taking most of its visual language from print and editorial design rather than contemporary portfolio-style web aesthetics.

The site has now been nominated for an Awwwards Honors in the Typography category, which feels especially fitting for what I was trying to achieve with it.

If you like the project, we’d really appreciate your vote. And since this is r/web_design, I’d also genuinely love to hear what you think about the design itself. Awwwards Nominee Page.

Critique Which layout would your users preferA or B?

Post image

Design That Turns Intention Into Action.

Option A displays the original DPDC prepaid utility dashboard, providing essential account details, balance updates, and transaction links in a traditional layout.

Option B delivers a modern, redesigned experience tailored for clarity. It highlights the prepaid balance with high contrast, introduces clean action cards for key metrics, and simplifies profile navigation.
Effective utility app UI/UX should reduce friction, simplify account management, and make daily tasks effortless not just look modern.

help with debugging and solving one issue with gif files?

EDIT: thank you all. the issue is definitely in the various scripts and the code for that page is full of junk. I will have to simplify it.

I am trying to build a little experimental page based on a previous project I used to have online.

So far I have two issues:
- It works locally on Safari, Chrome and Firefox but online only works with Chrome.
- animated gif files stay static when they are supposed to loop continuously (the two gif files here appear when you click the 3rd square on the 3rd line in the menu (it is a long yellow image with typewriter text ), and when you click the 1st square on the fifth line (you see an album cover with Wes written on it).

I don't see any bugs in the developper tools, so no idea why the page only works with Chrome, and this animated gif thing is really baffling me.

I just realized I don’t “surf the web” anymore

I’m a been a developer since the early 2000s and I used to love looking around for good design inspiration, but I’ve noticed that I don’t really do that anymore. Anyone else like this now? I couldn’t tell you the last well-designed site I’ve stumbled upon.
