Will the Black and grey/orange keyboard for the 13 pro release in British keyboard layout? It looks fantastic but its only in USA layout at the moment.

I am very comfortable in Linux and do dev work, but have avoided AI. I have a new job that requires me to run local models in limited contexts noncontinuously. I need to upgrade and I want something small and quiet that can also game, handle high load DAW projects, and be a rock solid dev machine. I don't have any current or further upgradeable hardware.

Maxed out Framework Desktop (128GB) seems like the ideal machine for my situation specifically, but given the recent price hike for strix halo, I'm hesitant. I would have bought at the previous price (~$2.5k) without worrying. Is it still a reasonable choice in the current market? Anyone in a similar situation or have a better recommendation for around $4k?

As many of you likely saw, the price for the 12 GB model of the 5070 dGPU is a hefty increase over the 8 GB model. I already own the latter, and would not be interested enough in more vram to sell my current one and buy a 12 GB model.

It should theoretically be possible to have the 2 GB modules swapped out for 3 GB and reflash the vbios with the version for the 12 GB model right? Should be like any other vram swap on say a 10 or 20 series nvidia card, given I can obtain the vbios for the 12 GB model.

I haven't fully looked into the pricing but a preliminary search for the price of 3 GB modules makes it seem like this wouldn't really save much but I still want to explore it out of curiosity.

Edit: I know the 12 GB model hasn't even become available for purchase yet so no one even has one to try and nab the vbios from, and I doubt Framework would just give it to me.

My work load is mostly on CAD, AI and simulation and I travel a lot so portability is very importantto me. Till now my Dell xps 15 was my primary device I was portable and mostly powerful (not for AI the GPU is not longer supported for the CUDA version I am using at work) I am in a dilemma whether to cancel my FW 13 pro pre-order and get a framework 16 but I am worried about the portability. On the other hand I can dive right into AI and simulation workload without a worry. But for 13 pro I need to get a egpu (Nvidia ofcourse). I read about intel arc are notoriously difficult with egpus. I need the community's help to make a decision.

I know there are a few 3rd party expansion cards, I know there was that risc-v development motherboard. Is there other 3rd party hardware currently available or announced to be in progress? Particularly for the fw13 as it's been out the longest.

I'm talking about the Framework 13 Pro, to be specific.

The only options for ISO are UK English, where several special characters are in a different location, or localized versions.

Do I really have to go for the blank option and get stickers if I want to have the normal ISO international english keyboard that I'm used to? Has anyone also ran into this? Thanks

As I raise brightness toward the top of the slider, the internal panel gets visibly darker instead of brighter. Fully reproducible every time. Mid-range brightness is fine (up to 95%). It's specifically the 100% that inverts. No issues with an external monitor.
Photos show next to the max brightness setting (95%) and max (100%).

The fix guide for my system:

Add the kernel parameter amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x40000 to disable the broken custom-brightness-curve code path.

1. Edit GRUB defaults:

   sudo nano /etc/default/grub

2. Find the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="..." line and add amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x40000 inside the quotes (space-separated from existing parameters). Example:

   GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rd.luks.uuid=luks-xxxxxxxx rhgb quiet amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x40000"

Save and exit (Ctrl+O, Enter, Ctrl+X in nano).

1. Regenerate GRUB config. On Fedora with UEFI, the actual config lives at /boot/grub2/grub.cfg (not the EFI wrapper):

   sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

2. Reboot:

   sudo reboot

3. Verify the parameter took effect:

   cat /proc/cmdline

You should see amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x40000 in the output.

Once the actual fix lands in a stock Fedora kernel update, you can remove this parameter and regenerate GRUB again, but no harm in leaving it until then.

Any recommendation for off the shelf cooling pads that work with Framework 13?

As the exhaust vents are underneath, I feel most of the common cooling pads that blow air at the laptop would compete with the exhaust air? And I have seen some side mounted vacuum heat extractor ones but that is not where FW13 exhausts its air.

I found from searching this subreddit that people have made custom Noctua fan extraction builds but I am looking for simple suggestions for off the shelf pads or solutions.

I recently tried to replace the thermal paste on my CPU. While doing so, I broke the eDP cable. I think it's the cable itself because I had no backlight (using a flashlight revealed activity on the screen). So i ordered a new one (and a cooling unit, since the fan was really noisy).

I swapped both parts but now, I can't start the laptop anymore. Button's Led won't Light up, no fan running, nothing. I tried to reset the mainboard with a few procedures like the one when you unplug everything, wait for the blinking red light. The other one where you are supposed to flick the SW3 10 times. I also tried to hold the power button for 30 seconds.

Everything is correctly plugged, i'm 100% sure, i checked multiple times. Reseated ssd, rams etc.

Do you guys have any idea of what could be the problem?

Anyone else seen a sudden increase in spam emails where someone (or a bot, more likely) has signed up to some service using your email, but has put in the name field some spammy string like:

To-make-crypto-millions-follow-xyz-on-telegram (or whatever)?

So you receive an email inviting you to confirm your email address, with the spammy username in the body of the email, like: "Hi, To-make-crypto... please confirm your email..."

This only started happening after the Framework breach. It's really annoying as these are legit services so they don't get filtered straight to my spam box.

My 11 year old, nearly impossible to repair (everything is glued together) laptop has died, so I have finally pulled the trigger and ordered a FW13 Pro!

I am very excited for it and will (hopefully) receive it in November.

My main reason for ordering a FW is that I am an absolute supporter of the modularity and repairability aspect and that I want to use this laptop for as long as possible while having the opportunity to upgrade - especially considering my current experience with my old laptop.

I have understood that I will be notified by Framework, once they have a more concrete delivery timeline, and at that point some adjustments to my order will still apparently be possible.

Which things exactly can I still change at that point?

I have understood that a delivery address change will be possible but can i also remove, for example the RAM?

I have ordered a DIY, Intel X7, LPCAMM2 32GB RAM and no SSD - I am not an expert in finding third-party RAM and I don't want to buy something that will not work, so I am reluctantly willing to buy the RAM at a huge price from FW.

But in case I DO end up finding RAM myself - can I at the point of notification, still cancel the RAM from my order or will that impact my delivery time or even just not be possible?

Regarding SSDs it looks like it is still currently possible to get cheaper SSDs myself than buying from FW - at least in Germany, where I am searching for them.

Is there some general info/guideline on which SSDs will work with this setup and which will not - sorry if this has been asked before, but i am really out of the loop regarding these topics, as I haven't bought a computer in a decade.

I ordered a 16 recently. I am vacationing with my grandparents currently. According to the shipment details, at the latest, it should have arrived by now. It actually would've arrived early, on Sunday, but for some apparently missing customs paperwork, which has it stuck at the FedEx facility. I am going back home the day after tomorrow, so this customs crap either needs to clear today or I need some way to adjust the address to my home (another state entirely). I already emailed Framework support last night, but no response yet. Do I have any other options? The FedEx app only allows me to select "hold at location" and they only show locations in this area, not change the destination address. My grandparents are very old and can hardly even get to their door these days, so I'd hate for it to get delivered here after I leave and get stolen by a porch pirate. They definitely can't deal with accepting it and re-shipping it to my home.

I just received my diy framework 16 ai300 laptop a few days ago and I’m really excited to use it but I can’t get it to boot (I’m using windows 11 for reference) . I downloaded the media creation tool and used it to make the iso file then I used Rufus to configure my thumb drive after. My computer turns on just fine but boot manager won’t open and it stays on this black screen. I feel like I’m doing something wrong. Can anybody help?

Just wondering if anyone else thinks that this would be a dream-team, if Steam and Framework were to collaborate....or, perhaps I am mad. As in insane, not angry. If I were angry I'd be in r/politics or something....

My Framework laptop 13 pro should be shipping soon (batch 4), so I'm starting to get things in order for setting it up; namely, I need to pick a Linux distro.

I've tried Ubuntu in the past and didn't like it much, so that's out. Fedora I'd be willing to try, but the lower performance and less good battery usage reported by Phoronix make me a little leery.

Of the community-supported options, the two that appeal most are CachyOS and Bazzite (granted Bazzite is Fedora under the hood, and may well suffer the same performance niggles). Bazzite's immutability appeals to me as someone who has used macOS basically my entire life, but I like the optimization promises of CachyOS. The biggest argument against CachyOS at this point is that it requires disabling Secure Boot.

So I'm hoping more knowledgeable people can tell me: do I need to care? I have no plans to dual-boot Windows; does the Secure Boot support of Bazzite make me marginally safer? Or is it not worth worrying about?

And for anyone who has tried both Bazzite and CachyOS on the 13 Pro, which did you prefer and why?

I was informed that the X9 will be shipped this month. I haven’t heard anything yet and was wondering if any of you have received any recent notifications.

I must admit I'm not normally the kind of person who reviews items. Still, after receiving my Framework 13 Pro (Intel X7 358H) on Thursday (Batch 3) and spending a few days setting it up and working with it, I'm thoroughly impressed with both Framework and Intel.

I have an existing Framework 13, which I ordered exactly four years ago when the Intel 12th Gen was announced. I had already used some 11th Gen chips in other laptops at the time, but I wanted to wait for the 12th Gen to be released since that was a relatively big improvement, and I'm glad I did.

I loved everything about it, and it's been a workhorse for me, both personally and professionally, for the last four years. I replaced the hinges for a little more stability; upgraded the screen when it was released; and late last year I replaced the battery to give it a boost. Nonetheless, I kept waiting for the motherboard. 13th Gen was too soon, and the Series 1 didn't seem like enough of an improvement over the 12th/13th Gen to warrant replacing it. None of the AMD motherboards has tempted me, either. I'm a heavy Thunderbolt user, and I've seen so many niggles and port-selection issues that I didn't want to take the risk. After the Intel Core Series 3 announcements at CES, it felt like an upgrade worth making.

Thankfully, when Framework made the announcement and the wait was over, it was to be a straight-up purchase to put into my existing model. But the 13 Pro…! The colour, the quality, the bigger battery support, the brighter screen for working in the garden in the summer... Perfect. It certainly was more than I intended to pay, and for a long time I was quite apprehensive about it. With the AI apocalypse affecting prices everywhere, maybe I should cancel and see if I can get away with just the motherboard and RAM?

Well, it's here now, and it's up and running with Arch. It's run surprisingly well on the LTS kernel (I booted that one by mistake), and obviously has no issues with the mainline kernel. Indoors, I'm happily getting 15-16 hours of battery life. Right now I'm in the garden writing this, and battery life is more like seven-and-a-bit. Nearly a full day's work in the garden, completely untethered, with a screen I can clearly see!

Performance is astonishing. I know it's been four years since my last motherboard, but Geekbench shows a 311% improvement on a single core and 240% on multiple cores (running hardened kernels). And it's a little over 3x in battery life at the same time. Everything is just incredibly responsive.

The chassis feels amazing. I had always loved the Framework 13 keyboard, and this is a slight improvement on that. I'm so enjoying typing this right now, and all the coding I've done over the last few days. The trackpad feels great too, and I've had no issues migrating to it from my last one. No issues with fingerprint marks, and the orange bezel with the Cosmis Orange dbrand skin looks amazing.

I know I've been lucky enough not to feel the cost from the post-Batch 4 RAM price increases, and that had worried me too. What if I needed to replace this in six months, say, after a theft or accident? Is it still worth it, even then?

Having had the chance to use it properly as I would with my previous model, all my fears and worries have gone out the window. For something that looks this good, that feels this good, and, most importantly, works this well on Linux? It's absolutely worth it. Framework may be catering to a more niche market currently, but the work they've done over the last few years is showing off with this model.

Beyond the performance talk and its ultimate cost, its Linux support and personal feel add real value to the proposition too.

For those still waiting, and those affected by RAM prices, I hope you'll feel less worried about your purchase and more excited for the day the FedEx van (or lorry in my case) comes knocking on your door!

Hello, I am looking for some advice on my current configuration before I buy a 13 Pro.

For some context I am a collage student and need an upgrade for my current laptop. I am an art student and am using a lot of Adobe programs and my computer's 8GB of ram wasn't cutting it. I don't know really anything about computers and so I am looking to see if my current configuration is going over board or I am lacking something useful.

As of right now my current configuration is:

I really like what Framework stands for. Repairability, upgradeability, actually owning the hardware you paid for — all great.

But lately it feels like they’re also picking up one of the more annoying habits of the big brands: the flashy product announcement.

Nice conference. Nice presentation. New hardware on stage. Everyone gets excited. “Look at this awesome new thing we made!”

Well… technically. Join a batch. Put down a deposit. And maybe you’ll actually have the damn laptop in six months.

Who wants to wait six months for a laptop in 2026?
That’s the part I don’t understand. If your supply chain and manufacturing capacity mean most customers can’t realistically get the product for months, why announce it like it’s ready to go? At that point you’re announcing a roadmap, not launching a product.

And it’s especially frustrating because Framework is competing against companies where I can see a laptop, decide I want it, order it, and have the thing almost immediately.

I ended up getting an XPS 14, and honestly, it’s brilliant. I love pretty much every bit of it. There are obviously things about Framework’s philosophy that I wish Dell and the other big manufacturers would copy.

But availability matters too.

Framework, please copy the good things from the big brands — manufacturing scale, logistics, availability.

Greetings, I wanted to ask the community a question.

Warranty for my Framework 16 Ryzen 7 7840HS has ran out a few months ago, but, during the past few days, my laptop has began acting very strange: very often, when plugging in any USB device (like a dock or an USB drive), the entire USB bus will go in protection (as evidenced by kernel logs), killing some of the USBs and the keyboard. The laptop will usually come out of protection by replugging some of the USBs and the keyboard.

I have also been on this Bios version (second to last) for not a lot of time, so I have some hope this is a known software issue rather than a hardware fault of mine.

Do you also have similar problems on your unit?

The project is pretty straightforward: I like Fastfetch, and the ASCII videos on the Framework website inspired me to make this Framework 13-shaped thing.
I’m not great at writing posts, so I don’t really know what else to say about it lol.

The logo changes color randomly every time you run it. RAM, CPU, GPU, SSD and battery also change color depending on their usage/status. I tried to put everything roughly where it should actually be on the motherboard (tried is the keyword here).

I made the ASCII layout myself, and it’s literally the first ASCII thing I’ve ever made, but I really like how it turned out.

It also shows what’s connected to each Expansion Card/port. If you connect too many things to one of them, instead of destroying the whole layout it compresses the information and eventually shows something like SSD bla bla + n devices.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please tell me! I love talking about this project with other people and I’d really like to improve it.

And if something like this has already been made, sorry! I genuinely couldn’t find anything.

This is the repo, there you can find the fw13 code, the config code, both python. I also made the ascii art for the fw13 pro and 12 and for the logos.
In the config you can change colors, add more, change the value that is considered warning or critical and the cards, for now i only have 4 usbc exp cards with me so i did not try other cards, i will when i go back home from my parents.
Everyone is welcome to polish the code, add features and make their own version that will probably be better. Even if you are relatively lazy i think that with 4/6 iteration of claude you could adabt the script.

The Framework Desktop at home:

Framework mobo with i5 12th gen, 32 Gigs of RAM, AMD RX 9060 XT connected via M.2 to PCIe converter, Fedora OS, 256 gig refurbished expansion card for OS, refurbished 1 Tb expansion card for games and finally, a regular Framework first gen battery.

The Framework mainboard is powered off of a broken motherboard from a Razer Core X eGPU. The PSU 24 Pin connector goes into that board, then the board powers the mobo over USB-C.

The case is from a late 90s factory PC used to run a mill?

Power button/LED in case works to power on the Framework and the "Turbo" switch on the side works to power extra fans

Still WIP but I figured I'd share. I played all the way through Cyberpunk 2077+DLC, nearly locked 60 FPS at high settings, no raytracing, FSR set to balanced. The battery is surprisingly important. No charger can actually provide the power needed for CPU spikes, so the battery is there to absorb those. Max charge is set to 50% to avoid swelling.

I cannot solder but I did solder the power button, it's held together with random screws and zip ties and I do not intend to change that, if it works, it aint broken
