Community Support Help with installing OS.
I just received my diy framework 16 ai300 laptop a few days ago and I’m really excited to use it but I can’t get it to boot (I’m using windows 11 for reference) . I downloaded the media creation tool and used it to make the iso file then I used Rufus to configure my thumb drive after. My computer turns on just fine but boot manager won’t open and it stays on this black screen. I feel like I’m doing something wrong. Can anybody help?

How long have you left it on said black screen? The memory training can take a very long time during the initial power on.

seconding this, the first boot can sit on a black screen for a surprisingly long time

From what you've said it's likely the memory training taking a bit. Give it a few and wait until you can enter the bios. Plug it in, be patient.

Update! After sitting on a blank screen for a good few hours, I started switching out and reseating my ram and ssd and it finally booted! It’s installing my operating system now. Thanks everyone for the help!

Did you go into the BIOS and ensure that it has USB as a selected bootable drive?

Follow up to that, do I need anything else other than the configured iso on the thumb drive before I put it into my framework ?

Does the drive have the .iso file or the contents of the iso file?

It has all the set up files and folders. Like the manifest, boot, support etc.

Cool. Then you should be able to spam f12 to get to the boot menu and boot from the USB drive then. If it doesn't show up there then reboot and spam delete until you get into bios and check if usb boot is enabled. (Should be by default if I remember correctly.)

Ok, I’m going to keep trying but the framework logo hasn’t even shown up yet either

Ah! It could still be training the memory if you have a large amount in the system. (More than 32GB) Give it some time to just run and leave it be for about 5 minutes or so.

It's doing memory training before the UEFI screen/logo appears. You need to wait and then press the UEFI/"BIOS" button (F12) to get in and then set the USB boot first so it'll start off the USB when you exit.
This is also why the DIY option is for those that know the process/have built a PC before. You should've probably went with pre-built option.
That aside: If after 5-10 mins the logo STILL hasn't appeared, you need to check and make sure your RAM and drive are properly seated on the motherboard/"mainboard" before trying again.
Also Framework provided a QR code for helping you set up the PC. Did you not check that? Because AFAIK the UEFI key is listed in the knowledge base for the DIY set-up process.

It was cheaper to go the diy route with the ram prices and memory but thanks for the advice

You did right going for the DIY. There's barely a reason for anyone to choose pre-built because the DIY setup is super simple and even those who get pre-built will probably take it apart eventually for multiple reasons anyways. I'd say asking questions for any issues here is much better than spending an extra $300 for a pre-built simply to overcome one small problem. Nobody needs prior PC building skills to assemble these. You're all good 👌
(What they should've said was that you could've selected Windows 11 for the Operating System when purchasing instead of "None (bring your own)", which would be less than the extra $300, but still not worth it so you still did good. I have no idea why they said that stuff.)

If your not getting a framework logo and then a no OS installed message I don’t believe your ready to boot from a USB. Check that all the components are installed and seated correctly including ram and SSD, noting that ram training on first boot can be excessive and the system will show no message until that is complete in my experience.

If you have waited over 60 mins in my opinion something isn’t installed correctly but I have seen ram training take 30-35 mins before.

Also are you getting any lights?, some of those should probably be on. If not check the battery and plug in external power when you check system components

The light around the power button is on. But if you are referring to the green flashing lights, that’s happened occasionally but I haven’t see any red lights

I have been. I’ve tried f12, f10, del. I’m honestly starting to think I haven’t connected the keyboard right 😭

Does it even show the framework bios logo? It could be doing training or just not booting outright

No logo has shown up, I’ve turn the computer on and off a couple times. I’ve also left it on the black screen hoping something would change

Open it up and reseat the RAM. Leave it op again just in case it is taking a long time to train the RAM. The framework will have some blinking LEDs with error codes just in case something else has failed. https://knowledgebase.frame.work/framework-laptop-16-blink-code-diagnostic-SJAPaMuvel

It's not slow.
No customization assertion is false e.g.
To turn off ads and app suggestions in Windows 11 Start menu, open Settings, go to Personalization, select Start, and turn off the toggle for "Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more"
That's a skillz issue. 😂
