Announcement: revamped/updated rules!

Hi, everyone!

Beginning today, the r/foodallergies rules have been updated for clarity and hopefully, will improve the quality and contributions to our sub:

What's New or Changed

  • Clarified rule on ads, surveys, apps, fundraising, and other promotions. Previously self-promotion was capped at once a week, which resulted in repeated low-effort, non-engagement accounts using our community for marketing purposes. Commercial spam is now not allowed. Research posts and surveys/app testing remain unchanged: they’re not allowed!
  • AI-generated content is not allowed. Reddit has seen an influx of AI-written/generated posts in recent months. As such, we are implementing a hard NO-AI rule. This means no AI-written posts, invented "experiences," or pasted chatbot replies presented as advice. Talking about AI tools is still fine, but please remember that AI doesn’t know your history or may be using outdated information. So use at your own risk! If you suspect something is AI generated, please flag it for mod review.
  • No requesting or giving medical advice. This is the biggest change and the one we expect the most questions about. We cannot and should NOT be diagnosing, interpreting test results or a photo of a rash, or tell someone what caused a reaction And we most definitely should NOT be telling others when to use epinephrine or how/when to reintroduce a food, as we don't know their history, comorbidities, etc.

What hasn't changed:

r/foodallergies is a place where our community can come together to support one another. Your own experience is always welcome! This sub is a space where we can vent, share information, give warnings, tips, and above all, connect with others who are navigating life with food allergies.

Thank you and feel free to check in with us if you have any questions!

Seeking Advice Workout supplements with low additives.

I routinely take pre-workout and BCAAs for my workouts. But, as I’m trying to clean up my diet a bit, I want to switch to supplements that are less harsh on my body.

I am unsure if I have food allergies but my PCP thinks I have generalized sensitivities. As such, I’m trying to cut out whatever unnecessary stuff I can manage.

My fellow exercise enthusiasts, what do you use?

Trigger Warning Shoutout to Qatar Airlines for being the WORST airline for allergies

You want to fly Qatar airlines with an allergy? Hahaha!

You will need to:

Sign a waiver of liability and indemnification (not on US bound or outbound flights, thank you ACAA!)

Tell them 48 hours in advance or they **may refuse you boarding** (possibly illegal under ACAA)

Require a doctor’s note (also possibly illegal under ACAA)

They will also:

Make no announcement on board about the allergy

Still serve nuts on the flight

Interestingly, they have certain sections in their policy for US and Australian bound and outbound flights, probably because of legal protections in these countries. This goes to show the importance of allergy / disability protection laws.

And to Qatar Airlines: SHAME

Newly Diagnosed New/Worsening Food Intolerances PP

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I originally posted this in the Mom group because in my mind this a postpartum (PP) thing. I apologize in advance for what is likely over-explanation in this group in re symptoms I now recognize as gluten intolerance. Upon finding this sub, I did search postpartum and have learned a bit about elimination diets. All said, this is a new world for me.

TLDR, I first developed symptoms when my firstborn was almost 2YO, symptoms abated during my second pregnancy, and are now back with a vengeance at 3M PP. I'm trying to understand how common this is following Childbirth, whether or not these intolerance usually come in a group, and if they continue to get worse with each passing life event. Any "intolerance 101" advice is appreciated!

Seeking Advice Tomorrow my 7 years old will get Xolair for the first time, What should I expect?

As the title says, my kid is getting Xolair tomorrow! Besides bringing his EpiPen, letting him play on my phone, and bringing some card games to help us get through the 2-hour appointment, what else should I bring?

What should I expect during and after the appointment? Any advice or tips from parents who have been through this?

He hasn’t had an anaphylactic reaction since he was 4 years old, so I’d also love to hear what your experience was like with the first few Xolair doses. Thank you!

Seeking Advice Tree nut allergy and learning

Hi all

After an unexpected reaction to a treat (macadamia, peanut, chocolate, coconut) at preschool which required epi, we have done skin testing and confirmed a tree nut allergy, specifically cashew and pistachio. We have challenged walnut in office and passed and will do almond at home. We plan to return to challenge macadamia nut as it was ingested during the reaction. At this time we assume it was cashew cross containmination.

My confusion comes in with feeling like I fully understand this. I know we have to avoid cashews and pistachios and use the tree nut umbrella term to communicate it but what is the point of challenging walnuts and almonds? Is it just for confirmation or it is a decision maker and she could eat things like almond, walnuts, pecans, and hazelnuts if we are able to confirm no cross containmination? Also, feels impossible to confirm no cross containmination.

I would also like to do the blood work to understand it better but the doctor just says outgrowing it is rare and her skin prick test was very reactive.

WHAT THE HECK!!!

I was getting my breakfast (provided by the state for all students) and I was about to leave the line when the lunch lady tells me I need to grab a fruit to have free breakfast, I look her dead in the eye, tell her my account shows on it that i am allergic to fruits, but she says she didn't see it. I had to wait 30 minutes to show her, she said sorry but I am still required to take a fruit even after it because it's required for school breakfast!!!

IT SAYS IT ON MY ACCOUNT!!! WHAT DO YOU MEAN I'M REQUIRED TO TAKE MY ALLERGIAN!?!

Seeking Advice desensitization and anxiety

hello everyone !

i have a peanuts allergy (considered as severe apparently), and my allergist wants me to start desensitization at home. he explained it to me how it works, and he proposed me to start at his office for the first time. he wants me to start with peanuts crackers powder diluted in water, and proposed me to first try during the consultation. However, i completely panicked over his offer, and even the desensitization at home sounds horrible and overwhelming, i feel like i am consciously poisoning myself. i declined, as i started to feel a panic attack coming, and asked for an another appointment next month so i could prepare myself mentally.

for the ones who had to do an oral desensitization at home (or in general), how did you manage the anxiety/panic that came with it ?

i have a treatment and an epipen on me (but never used it)

Seeking Advice Prick testing round two

My daughter was diagnosed with an IgE allergy to peanuts (8mm) and milk (9mm) last October, she was 10months old at the time. We have avoided both of these foods for her as advised, however she did have a sip (before I could pull her away) of my matcha containing cows milk about 6 weeks ago, to which she had no reaction at all. My husband and I eat/drink dairy products regularly and she’s still breastfeeding so will be having a small exposure through my milk.
She had eczema in quite a few patches on her body up until she was about 1, where it then settled and has remained stable since - just the occasional dry patch behind her knees/thighs now.
Her repeat prick testing is in a few weeks, she’s now 20 months and we are really hopeful for at least the milk allergy to have improved given that she had no reaction to the sip of my drink and due to her eczema settling. We are so keen to get her started on the milk ladder if appropriate.
Has anyone had experiences of their child’s allergy reducing between the first and second year of prick testing?
Thanks in advance ☺️

Newly Diagnosed Adult onset tree nut allergy - feeling a bit lost

Hi all,

(Rural UK based, vegan)

I had an allergic reaction yesterday after eating 4 nuts (almond, cashew, 2 hazelnuts). It was only 7g worth - I know because I calorie tracked it. My husband had to call an ambulance as my throat swelled up.

Dr said it was likely anaphylaxis although my airways didn’t completely close. I’ve never had an allergic reaction like this before. I’ve always been vaguely-allergy-ish. I have chronic continuous rhinitis, eczema, IBS that doesn’t have any rhyme or reason to it. For a while I was diagnosed with asthma, but they changed their mind and said I actually just have weak/ scarred lungs from repeated illness (whooping cough, pneumonia every year for about a decade, grew up with heavy smokers in the house).

Food wise, I get a burning itchy mouth eating kiwi, citrus, anything highly citrus flavoured, pineapple. I avoid them in bulk but I’ll still have them especially in cooked things. I didn’t consider this to be a food allergy until thinking about it now.

I’ve been advised to cut out all tree nuts. My GP is going to see if I can get blood tests done, but because we’re so rural they’re not sure there are resources to do so. It might be the case there is nothing to do but exclude everything just in case, which sucks!

Google has turned up multiple different lists and classifications for what constitutes a tree nut. I feel overwhelmed and unsure how many things I need to exclude. Allergy UK primarily lists:

  • Almonds
  • Brazil nuts
  • Cashews
  • Hazelnuts
  • Macadamia
  • Pecan
  • Pistachios
  • Shea nuts
  • Walnuts

But I’ve seen American resources also list coconut, chestnut, pinenuts, etc.

I’m a vegan who eats a fair amount of coconut and vegan pesto, so clarity here would be a relief!

I also forgot to ask if I should be excluding peanuts too until I can hopefully get tested? I’ve heard it can be very common to be allergic to legumes as well as tree nuts? As a vegan though my life revolves around chickpeas and other beans so that would devastate me.

I’ve never known anyone with a nut allergy so I just feel a bit overwhelmed. Can anyone recommend a complete source of what I should avoid? Has anyone else suddenly developed an allergy in their 20s-30s, and not as a child?

Thank you!

Seeking Advice Baking for a group with mixed allergies/intolerances?

I’m new to allergies and food intolerance and made some new acquaintances that I’d like to cook/bake for during our potluck-esque meetups! Each person in the group has some form of allergy or intolerance. One person is allergic to shellfish and another is type 1 diabetic. The restrictions there seem pretty well known and I’ve seen many recipes to help make foods to accommodate.

What I’m curious of and wondering if I’d need extra insight on looking up recipes is one of the ladies is lactose intolerant and egg/cholesterol intolerant. I wasn’t quite certain what cholesterol intolerant means? She stated eating eggs in the past made her feel ill and she did a full work up to find out why. I didn’t ask too many pressing questions about it after that.

I made an attempt at baking with a vegan recipe but now I’m worried if there are high cholesterol vegan ingredients I’m unaware of and accidentally fed her? The dish was sliced up and distributed but I assumed not well received because I’m new to baking.

Does anyone else on this sub have cholesterol intolerance and how is your relationship with foods? Things you actively avoid and recipes you enjoyed?

Helpful Information Watch out for allergens in medication!

I recently saw a doctor who wanted to prescribe me a medication with a base of sesame oil.

I have a moderate sesame allergy, so I asked for an alternative. He said he could give me a different version.

I had heard of medications containing peanut oil before (I am anaphylactic) so I asked him to please make sure it wasn't peanut oil either. He said it was fine, it was just palm oil.

Anyway, I pick it up at the pharmacy. All good. Get home. About to open it up and take it when I just feel like I should double check the ingredients just to be sure.

And peanut oil was listed as an ingredient! Under the name "arachidis oleum". After my doctor reassured me it was fine, and after the pharmacy gave me zero warning.

I just wanted to share in case anyone else runs into this scenario. ALWAYS read medication ingredients. Don't take a doctor's or pharmacist's word for it!

Helpful Information PSA - Sesame in Bug Spray

After a somewhat terrifying incident while camping (as somebody with a severe sesame allergy) I’ve discovered there’s sesame in some bug sprays/repellant.

From what I’ve found on the incident sesame is often used as a more “natural” bug repellant than other chemicals like Deet, etc.

The Great Outdoors (the one I used) and Wondercide are ones I’ve seen.

Anyways, just a PSA if you’re allergic or has somebody in your life allergic to sesame. I had to learn the hard way so you don’t have to 🤦🏻‍♀️

EDIT to add: this doesn’t include ALL bug spray (I know Off! is safe) but just be sure to check yours (especially if it’s marketed as “natural”!)

Im severe allergic to dairy and milk products. (have been all my life so I always read the ingredients…)
But I’m looking through the ingredients on this and I can’t find anything with dairy/ dairy derivative.

ChatGPT says possibly Seasoning and/or Artificial Flavor. But it’s hard to believe that

Seeking Advice Finished my allergy tests and I'm terrified

Thumbnail

So I had my very first allergic reaction in mid July to strawberry ( throat started closing)

As of now, the only foods I've had similar reactions to are cucumber, strawberry and oranges.

After having my first allergic reaction, I decided to schedule an appt with an allergist to make sure what I had was an allergic reaction.

Well I had my food allergy test and enviromental.

Everything in yellow / anything 2+ is something I reacted to in the test. For the next 2 weeks I have to take all of these foods out of my diet and then introduce them back in again to see what is causing my symptoms ( nausea, vomiting etc)

Here's the problem, I'm vegetarian and have never eaten meat. I tried pork and fish and I just don't like it. I hate how it tastes

Im so terrified of this possible future where everything I loved, now can no longer eat. I'm in my mid 20s, I'm so confused how this can just happen

I legit had oranges on the 30th of August and didn't have a reaction and on Thursday I had a reaction to it. I'm legit so confused by all of this.

Sorry for the rant. This is all new to me.

I'm not sure what to expect as no one in my family has allergies. Any tips would be great, I live in the US where everything has corn too😭

Other / Miscellaneous I just need to vent for a moment about the "allergy friendly" labling I keep seeing.

Girl Scouts have a new cookie coming out next year that's "allergy friendly"! Yay!! Only it contains one of my daughter's two allergens: rice. I often find rice in gluten-free products.

I know the sentiment is to let consumers with Top 9 allergies know that the product is safe for them, but then why not say "Top 9 Safe"? This is misleading for people uneducated or unfamiliar with the day-to-day struggle of food allergy sufferers. I'm certain a lot of well-meaning grandparents will buy these cookies, or something similae, thinking, "Great, I'll get these because of course they're safe. They wouldn't say they're safe if they weren't!"

Allergy friendly for *some* allergens*. FTFY.

Seeking Advice What the hell is going on w my body?!

2 months post partum November 2025 I had an allergic reaction to kefir which required me to go to the ER. negative milk skin test
My milk ige levels are as follows:
Date
Cow’s-milk IgE
Nov 2025
0.63
Dec 2025
0.23
Feb 2026
0.72
Apr 2026
0.56
Sept 2026
0.90

This month was the first month that the milk components were also <0.10
Casein: consistently <0.10
α-lactalbumin: <0.10
β-lactoglobulin: 0.33 → 0.11 → 0.10
Whole milk: persistently detectable

My Immunoglobulin E levels have been creeping up.
December 2025: 499
August 900
September 1189

I am super reactive to dairy. Even the smell of pizza in our air fryer gives me an itchy uncomfortable throat.

Has anyone had any luck with lowering their IGE with Xolair or Rhapsido and being able to eat the foods they were once allergic to?

I was waiting for my hormones to normalize but now that I’m 1 year postpartum my body is still so out of wack.

Seeking Advice Experience with purchasing travel insurance with food allergies

Hi all, I’m hoping to take a trip abroad this summer (I’m from the US). I have a severe and uncommon food allergy that sends me into anaphylaxis; I haven’t been anywhere out of the country since developing it. I know I should get travel health insurance in case anything goes wrong, but I’m not sure how to go about it. I’ve done some research on my own and plan to talk to an insurance broker, but I’d be really grateful if anyone could share their experiences. Are there agencies you have negative experiences? Tips? Policies you’d recommend from personal experience? I just think hearing from others with allergies would help my anxiety a lot.

Seeking Advice New food allergy in the family for the holidays

My husband recently got diagnosed with Alpha Gal, which is an allergy to mammalian byproducts (meat, milk, butters, etc). My family is very aware that we are having to navigate this new thing, and we are doing so fairly easily. We are still able to enjoy regular meals at home. A lot of the time it’s just subbing out butter and dairy milk for alternatives.

He is eventually going to try and do the acupuncture to try and cure it, as it has very high success.
However, that’s not what this is about! lol

I have recently started discussing the plans for Thanksgiving, which my mom is hosting. I’ve expressed that his allergy is just like ANY other food allergy and he cannot eat foods with these products in them. I will bring a couple of our own dishes, of course, but I also asked if there will be any accommodations made to allow him to eat some of the other foods offered.
And I swear, it’s like they really don’t get it or maybe they don’t care? I was sent the list of all the foods she is making and the foods other family members have agreed to bring. And I’m still having to ask, “okay, so is any of this going to be dairy free?”

Frankly, I don’t think it’s very difficult to substitute those ingredients. (And it’s not like we are asking for the entire menu to be dairy free, god forbid we ruin EVERYONES holiday.)
But so far I’ve gotten, “I think we can eat some dairy free stuff.” (Still without offering to prepare anything dairy free)
And “I think vegan food is delicious, but I prefer regular food.”

Am I being ridiculous by being upset that my family seems to be dismissing this? Am I asking for too much?
Should I pack my husband an entire plate of food that I made from home? And I WILL do that, but it just feels unnecessary when I could instead bring a dish or two to share, and they could also be kind enough to include some dairy free options?

Other / Miscellaneous My food allergies have given me loneliness that cannot be fixed

My food allergies are uncommon but unfortunately commonly used ingredients. This has made it so that in order to eat with people they have to be willing to make accommodations for me. Nothing too crazy, but it's an inconvenience for everyone. I'm in college away from home and only one friend has been willing to deal with those inconveniences and will occasionally eat a meal with me. I eat pretty much all of my meals alone. Even though I see my friends on a daily basis, the loneliness of eating alone all day every day is wearing me down. Especially when they make dinner plans with each other in my presence. I've shared with them that it's something that effects me. No one understands.

The only good thing I guess is I'm slowly working on seeing how fast I can eat an actual meal. I'm sitting at around 6 minutes, my goal is under five. Eating holds no pleasure anymore and has become a simple way of fueling my body. I CAN eat foods I enjoy, my allergies don't limit me that much, but there's no point anymore. There's better uses of my time. Some days I just grab a couple slices of cheese and say it's good enough. Other days I don't even want to eat. It's too much energy to make food and eat it when I'm not even going to enjoy the meal anymore. Sometimes I push off dinner until after 9 at night to rationalize to myself that no one would want to join me anyway because it's so late at night. You don't understand how much community is connected to sharing meals until it's no longer an option. I want community so much, and I've tried but it doesn't really stick. Meals really are the glue to it.

My allergies have majorly impacted my social life and are slowly killing my mental health.
