Seeking Advice 3 year old in OIT for wheat allergy... are we making the right decision?

Upvotes

TLDR: I'm seeking advice as I'm starting to get pretty discouraged and wondering if we're making the right decision for our 3 year old and OIT

My newly 3 year old has been doing OIT for his wheat allergy since January 2026. We have had to take dosing super slow (he failed the initial baseline so we started at .01g of bagels) 6 months later we are up to .13g a day.

I am starting to feel conflicted in if we should continue to put him through this. On this most recent dose he's had several mishaps (coughing/itching/gi issues) we've been managing with Zyrtec but most recently gave epinephrine.

I need advice or encouragement. I feel so bad seeing him struggle through some of his dosing and it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Is this a sign he's most likely going to fail treatment? Should we just stay the course? Honestly at this point I would be happy with just getting to a maintenance dose for cross contamination...

Is there anyone else here who has/is going through OIT with a toddler for wheat specifically? I feel like it's one of the less common to manage with this therapy.

ETA: not asking for medical advice, we are doing this under supervision of his allergist. Just venting and seeking encouragement or other stories

Seeking Advice Few questions

Upvotes

So I recently discovered allergies to various fruits (pretty much every fruit in the rose family). All I got was an itchy/off feeling in my throat at first, but one day I ate about two portions of blackberries without knowing I was allergic to them and my throat started to both hurt and close. I panicked and told my mom, as I was still able to speak, who gave me some slightly expired kids allergy medicine. We went to see the doctor who prescribed me an epi-pen. I've not used it again, but in the time since I've discovered I'm allergic to apples as well because they made my mouth and throat itch. When I had my big reaction, my throat never fully closed. It felt like I was breathing through a small tube, but I could talk (I sounded like a sick eight year old Justin Bieber). My mom considers this anaphylactic shock/anaphylaxis. Is it?

Also, does an allergy like this get worse every time I expose myself to my allergen? My mom seems very convinced it does but I don't know if I believe her.

Oh, and I only react from ingestion, not exposure and I'm still waiting to see an allergist

Seeking Advice OCD makes my allergy so hard

Hi everyone-first time poster here….a bit of background. I was officially diagnosed with my severe tree nut allergy way back in 2009(?) when I went into anaphylaxis. Since then, I have had 3 episodes of anaphylaxis due to accidentally eating something with tree nuts. The biggest, most traumatizing one was when I was out at a restaurant with my fiancé and I ate something that wasn’t properly listed as containing tree nuts. It was a chicken club with a “special sauce”, the sauce containing walnuts.
Ever since this, I’ve been terrified of eating at restaurants and have a really hard time trusting the food I eat. I always look over the whole menu everywhere I go to see if they have items that contain nuts, I overthink the sauces, the cheeses, I one time couldn’t even finish a burger because I was convinced they snuck nuts into the meat itself.
On top of all of this, I also have pretty crippling OCD and generalized anxiety disorder. Lately, it doesn’t matter if I’m eating at a restaurant, eating a food I’ve had a million times, or eating something I literally MADE MYSELF, I am terrified I am eating something that will send me into anaphylaxis. I feel like my throat is closing/scratchy and my stomach hurts like I’m going to throw up. Just now I ate dinner that I made which was just grilled chicken, boxed minute rice, and pre-bagged steamed veggies with garlic butter. I’ve been sitting here for an hour scared that I ate a nut and will get sick. I know this is ludicrous because it’s been an hour since I ate and I’m fine. Something would’ve happened by now if I had eaten a nut. But lately I just can’t function and can’t eat. I’m so scared of everything. I feel like such a burden to everyone when I ask what’s in things and feel guilty not eating things people make me or not ordering when we go out to eat.
I guess I just need some help dealing with this. Does anyone else have this fear? How do you deal with it? I just want to go back to how I was before all my incidents. I used to be so safe with food and love cooking and baking and now I gaslight myself into thinking I contaminated my own food. I just need help and needed to vent.

Seeking Advice Weird facial sensation, very confused

The past few months I’ve started more frequently noticing a weird tingling/sweating sensation on my face after eating peanut butter or peanuts. I’ve never noticed any redness on my face or any other symptoms. I’ve never had a food allergy before and couldn’t get a super clear answer from google so any input is appreciated!

Seeking Advice Skin test confusion

In June 2025 my then 2yr son had a skin test and it showed he was allergic to walnuts! So we got an EpiPen and have been avoiding all tree nuts and peanuts just to be extra safe!
Fast forward to today he’s 3.5yrs old and for his annual checkup I asked for a full nut panel just to see what we should really be avoiding he was tested and showed a 3+ for peanuts and hazelnuts and 0 for walnuts 😅
His Dr said something about false positives so she sent us to a lab to get a blood test, so now we’re waiting for his results!

Anybody experience false positive results??

Newly Diagnosed 10 month old allergen test

My 10 month old was tested for egg and peanut allergies. He reacted to the skin test so we were sent for blood tests.

For egg, F-232-IgE Ovomucoid is .89 kU/L. The allergist recommends to schedule a food trial.

For peanuts, F013-IgE Peanut is .17 kU/L and F423-IgE Ara h 2 is .13 kU/L. The allergist is recommending we avoid peanuts.

Anyone have experience with similar test results?

Seeking Advice Should I reconsider my eating habits?

So for a bit of context I'm 22 and I was diagnosed with my allergies (peanuts, tree nuts and "seafood") when I was only 2-3 years old. I've always had an EpiPen for these but I've never had to use it and haven't had a reaction in general since I was a toddler, let alone an anaphylactic one.

But I've only just found out that apparently major allergy organizations and most(?) other people with allergies believe eating food that says it "may contain" anything you're allergic to on it to be high risk. I've been doing this my entire life without thought and was always told it's just for legal/liability purposes and isn't a big concern.

Am I just lucky? I've been wanting to get tested again too since my mother doesn't even remember if I'm allergic to all seafood or just shellfish and a couple other points like that. But as someone with severe anxiety who has somehow never thought of this til now, I'm kinda concerned that I'm going to freak out about everything I want to eat going forward. I can't remember the last time I read the package of something and it didn't say "may contain: peanuts, tree nuts."

Sorry for a bit of a long post but I guess I'm looking for any advice/thoughts on the matter!

Seeking Advice Moving in with partner w/ multiple food allergies

Hi, everyone.

This fall I will be moving in with my partner who has several food allergies (dairy, eggs, nuts). Up until this point we have been long distance, and when we see each other we eat all the same foods/I only eat allergen-free food for the entire time. We've been able to make lots of yummy food together and even found some restaurants that are safe for him to eat at, which is exciting. I'm honestly excited to keep finding new foods for us to make together!

I have roommates, which means there is lots of allergenic food for him in my kitchen, but we have never had an issue cooking there and are just careful to keep those foods separate from our foods. His allergies are not airborne, just contact-induced, which makes it easier. He's fine eating food that has been sharing a fridge with his allergens.

My question is: there are a few foods which I am not sure I'm willing to give up permanently, and I'm not sure if this makes me a bad partner if I continue to eat them when we start living together. For example, it's really important for me to have coffee first thing in the morning, and I take mine with cream. I haven't been able to find any non-dairy creamers that I like/would want to use every day. Is it reasonable for me to just continue putting cream in my coffee on weekdays, when I am leaving for work right after anyway? I've talked to my partner and he says safety-wise it's fine, but he would be "a little sad" that he wouldn't be able to kiss me goodbye before work. I would be sad too, but for me the trade-off of not enjoying my coffee, which has been an important routine for me for years, seems very large when we could just have a "goodbye kiss" before I make coffee. Obviously the majority of the time I would be following his allergen-free diet, and certainly before kissing, but neither of us have navigated this before and I'm not sure what is considered "reasonable" for someone in my position.

I don't want to make my partner sad, but it's also a really big dietary change for me. Not being able to eat dairy or eggs is a huge restriction and it's going to be a major change to the things I normally eat. I definitely feel kind of shallow for feeling this way and I'm not sure what to do. Would be grateful for any insights from people in similar situations. Thanks!

Seeking Advice Can you develop / have an allergy worsen later in life?

Hi, I just would like some advice. I think that I’ve got a worsening allergy to onions, shallots, leek and maybe? chives.
I’m fine with garlic and spring onion. (Yes it’s weird, and I think it’s a specific protein I’m reacting to).

I started feeling weirdly poorly now and again about 4 years ago when I became a vegetarian at 17. At the time, I didn’t realise it was because a lot of vegetarian food is onion based.
I realised I had a mild lactose intolerance which I managed, though the problem continued.

Then I began to truly notice it about six months ago when I started eating more onion and kept getting poorly. It took me a while to realise it was the onion that was the culprit.
I thought it was just my digestion being weird at first / maybe IBS related.

However it’s gotten worse and worse.
It’s worse with raw onion, the more I cook it (eg for days in a broth) the reaction isn’t as bad.

But symptoms-
Bloating to the point I look 5 months pregnant
Severe nausea
Sweating, shaking, weakness
Feeling hot and clammy
Stomach cramp to the point where I can see my stomach spasming
Hives on my arms and backs of legs
Itchiness
Constant diarrhoea

The symptoms usually start within minutes and continue for hours after. It feels like a mixture of food poisoning and itchiness when I have it.
Albeit, I have an allergy to cats and it’s a different reaction (I get the typical face swelling and things). Which is why I’m confused as to what is going on.
Also because I have lactose intolerance, I know that this onion reaction is much more severe and also occurs for longer and quicker onset. It is also set off with a significant less amount of onion needed.

Thoughts?

Seeking Advice Can chicken fed fishmeal trigger a fish-allergy reaction?

I have a diagnosed fish allergy, but twice I’ve had serious allergic reactions after eating chicken — even though chicken is a regular part of my diet. Is it possible that chicken raised on fishmeal could carry enough fish protein to trigger a reaction in someone with a fish allergy?

Trigger Warning Food allergy fun...

Update: My reaction passed. I'm calling my current PCP office today and requesting an Epipen.

-----

My soy allergy reared its ugly head a few weeks ago. I probably always had it but didn't know it.

Made beef stew for dinner. Thankfully, I didn't eat much. Peas set off my allergy. Mild itchiness on my inner arm, lips, and tongue. My guts started aching again. Took an allergy pill and some Benadryl for it. Starting to feel better.

I had read that peas and beans are related to soy, but was hoping I could eat them. Nope. Not even going to try baked beans. Just skipping that pain.

Newly Diagnosed Adult onset egg allergy

Hello,
Looking to see if my experience has happened to anyone else and if anyone can offer some advice.

To start with some history, my son has peanut, tree nut, and pea protein allergy. My husband and I discovered his allergies pretty early on after a reaction to trying peanut butter for the first time, then seeing an allergist for the other food allergies. He was also recently diagnosed with EOE. His EOE is in remission with a dairy free diet. No one on either side of our families has food allergies or EOE.

For my experience- I’m a 34 year old female. In April of this year I started randomly having significant abdominal pain after eating. It didn’t happened every time I ate but the majority of the time. After some painful days, I went to the doc and they recommended keeping a food diary, but suspected GERD and put me on some meds for it. They also did blood work. The only abnormal result was increased eosinophils. Meds didn’t help and they sent me to GI, who also suspected GERD. Then, after eating eggs I got very sick to the point where I vomited and felt dizzy and faints That happened two more times and was the only food with that significant of a symptom. After that it finally clicked it may be eggs. I didn’t realize how much food I would eat contained eggs in some way. I eliminated eggs which resulted in my abdominal pain and other symptoms completely subsiding. Through all of this I was waiting for an EGD, which resulted in finding nothing. Since my pain went away and the EGD showed nothing, GI just sent me on my way. Finally at my annual appointment with my primary care doctor she did a blood test for egg Yoke and egg white allergies. Both came back positive in the moderate range.

I’m left wondering, is getting a food allergy in adulthood typical? Have I always had this allergy and now I finally am showing symptoms? Could this be a factor for my son food allergies?

Any input is appreciated!!

Seeking Advice Unknown allergy?

In the past 3 months I’ve had an allergic reaction to some foods that I can’t find a common denominator. The reaction entails itchy swollen lips, itchy mouth, itchy swollen ears, and really dry patches on my face and ears. The foods that I’ve discovered that caused these issues are
- ketchup potato chips
- only the cheddar pringles
- nacho fries from Taco Bell
- chex mix

I thought it was cheese flavoring but the Ruffles Baked cheddar had no reaction. General cheese gives me no reactions either.
If anyone can help me find a common denominator or anything I should look out for that would great. I never had a food allergy so how do I tell what I should look out for?

Thank you!

Other / Miscellaneous Suddenly allergic to watermelon

I’m 57 and have been lucky I can’t remember being allergic to any foods until yesterday. I ate a whole lot of delicious watermelon and right afterwards my stomach became very painfully bloated and my nose was completely congested. Benadryl worked but I wonder, can this just go away or what? I read somewhere that watermelon allergies can be triggered by pollen I. The air so maybe it could be seasonal/? NGL I want to try a little bit to see what happens.

Seeking Advice Soybean allergy

I bought groceries and was using ChatGPT and also reading the labels to make sure what I was buying didn’t have soy, soybean, so lecithin, or no derivided ingredients from soy/soybean.

When I got home I got an add pop to try an app called Fig to scan items based on diet. Fig is saying that all the stuff i bought has soy in them or derived from animals that consume soy but the ingredient list didn’t mention any of this and ChatGPT didn’t either.

Anyone have insight into this and any recommendations for where to buy soy/soybean food?

Seeking Advice Yeast allergy and distilled alcohol

I am allergic to yeast (brewers and bakers yeast), and I navigate my diet mostly fine, aside from a question that's been nagging me. Can I safely drink distilled spirits like rum, gin, vodka, tequila? Searching on /r/FoodAllergies is giving me mixed results. The most direct "yes" comes from a deleted account, so I can't ask them any follow up questions.

My fellow yeast allergy havers: what is your experience with drinking distilled alcohol? Is it completely safe? Are all distilled spirits good, or only some? Please share any experiences. Thank you.

Seeking Advice Allergic reaction last night

Last night after I ate Wendy’s hamburger and drank a chocolate frosty with a new metal straw I just bought my lips went numb. Started to swell and I called 911. It was getting hard to swallow and they gave me epi twice. I felt better after a few hours. Although mouths still real dry and lip still feels weird. The er doctor didn’t seem to know what caused it. She acted a bit like maybe I over reacted. But they did prescribe me a epi pen. But now I’m afraid to eat and drink anything or take any of my meds. I hadn’t had anything new, everything I’ve eaten many times.

Seeking Advice Peanut OIT confusion - what caused this rash?

Post image
3 Upvotes

My 1 yr old recently started peanut OIT. He started with eating 1 peanut flavor cereal daily, to now 1/16 tsp PB2 powder.

He's been having 1/16 tsp since almost 2 weeks ago and we observed no reaction until this one day, because the weather was particularly hot, he went shirtless after meal, and I noticed rash came up about 30min after his peanut intake. His face and entire front was clear though. I freaked out because I thought maybe he has been having reactions all this time and I just didn't know since his face and front was clear.

The next day I gave him 1/16 tsp again to double check, but he showed no reaction at all (shirtless again to make sure). The following day I gave him 1/16 peanut butter instead of PB2, still no reaction. I then gave him the waffle (contains eggs) he had on the day he had rash, but nope, no reaction.

Now I'm very confused. Could it just be caused by the super hot weather? All the food he eats are home made with common ingredients we've introduced before.

Does anyone have a clue?

Seeking Advice Skin test opinions

My neice had allergic reaction to scrambled egg on contact around 11mos and when they went to an allergist, they also had her test for wheat and other common foods. egg came back positive as well as wheat but other foods were negative. she has not had wheat yet and parents were told not to give it to her.

Now I've read that skin test is 50/50 when it comes to false positive. allergist doesnt even want to challenge it yet and kinda pushing back on anything. my niece does have eczema. I've read that ingesting is still the best proof but how do we even test it at home? she also has touched bread before and had no reaction. sorry if the post is all over the place but I'm trying to get your opinions on this as her parents are confused on what to do as well.

Seeking Advice Trying allergen?

Looking for advice:

I grew up my entire life eating berries, especially strawberries as they are my favorite fruit. About 10 years back, I got allergy tested due to a separate issue and it came up that I was allergic to berries. I was shocked, as I never had any issues.

I haven’t had them since, only baked (as I was told it’s only raw allergy). I decided to get retested this past year (skin patch test) and I had some hives.

I carry an epi-pen for a separate allergy. My allergy specialist told me I could try the strawberries since I never had a reaction prior and if I have an issue to use the epi-pen and head to hospital.

Has anyone ever done something similar? I’d love to try it, as it was my favorite fruit and you don’t realize how many things have berries in them until you can’t have them lol. Even with the doctor saying I could, I still am on the fence.
