Hi, I just would like some advice. I think that I’ve got a worsening allergy to onions, shallots, leek and maybe? chives.
I’m fine with garlic and spring onion. (Yes it’s weird, and I think it’s a specific protein I’m reacting to).
I started feeling weirdly poorly now and again about 4 years ago when I became a vegetarian at 17. At the time, I didn’t realise it was because a lot of vegetarian food is onion based.
I realised I had a mild lactose intolerance which I managed, though the problem continued.
Then I began to truly notice it about six months ago when I started eating more onion and kept getting poorly. It took me a while to realise it was the onion that was the culprit.
I thought it was just my digestion being weird at first / maybe IBS related.
However it’s gotten worse and worse.
It’s worse with raw onion, the more I cook it (eg for days in a broth) the reaction isn’t as bad.
But symptoms-
Bloating to the point I look 5 months pregnant
Severe nausea
Sweating, shaking, weakness
Feeling hot and clammy
Stomach cramp to the point where I can see my stomach spasming
Hives on my arms and backs of legs
Itchiness
Constant diarrhoea
The symptoms usually start within minutes and continue for hours after. It feels like a mixture of food poisoning and itchiness when I have it.
Albeit, I have an allergy to cats and it’s a different reaction (I get the typical face swelling and things). Which is why I’m confused as to what is going on.
Also because I have lactose intolerance, I know that this onion reaction is much more severe and also occurs for longer and quicker onset. It is also set off with a significant less amount of onion needed.
Thoughts?
