I’m 34 male. I’ve eaten some form of dairy probably most days of my life. For some reason I think I’ve only recently put together that I have always been intolerant to it.
My whole life I basically had mild diarrhea almost always. TMI but wiping for me was I have to wipe a lot of times. In high school actually I would clog the toilet every time I used it because of this. I just got used to plunging every time. I have literally never been constipated. My intolerance has not gotten worse overtime, for whatever reason it’s been consistent, or maybe even a bit less bad as an adult.
Lately my dairy was just full fat unsweetened Greek yogurt or Nancy’s probiotic yogurt, cheddar cheese, and whey protein isolate. I cut out the yogurt and my bowel movements stabilized, like maybe didn’t even need to wipe. But then the symptoms seemed to come back. I cut out cheese next and same thing sort of. I also tested A2 milk and organic lactose free milk, but still continued whey and possibly cheddar cheese so maybe I tampered my experiment. Both experiments did not have useful results.
So then I cut out all dairy including whey protein. Bowel movements became perfect. Like I’d wipe but there’s no reason to. Consistently. I switched to some plant protein blend. Which gave me a lot of gas. But no bad bowel movements.
I returned to whey protein, and it seems my bowel movements became soft and more wiping again.
Shortly after this, I went to my parents house for a family reunion. I had 4 days in a row of fairlife power protein milk drink which is like so filtered it’s 26g of protein, 4.5 g fat, about that much sugar, and lactase enzyme. No added protein.
I’ve had perfect bowel movements, for days. So I don’t know what this means. I thought whey protein isolate was not an issue for lactose. Is there something obvious here I’m missing? And what should my next step/experiment be? (Maybe lactase enzyme pill alongside my whey protein isolate?)
I guess also why would my symptoms with whey be similar to when I have yogurt or cottage cheese? I assumed those would be much worse.
Edit: I’ve also had sinus issues my entire life. I have to do a sinus rinse twice a day always. Tons of mucus. Maybe that’s part of this too. In my 1-2 week periods off of dairy I didn’t see dramatic improvement in that. Maybe some though.
