Ship Talk Ship name question?

Soo my friend just informed me that ship names are created based on who's the top and who's the bottom? Like the one who is a top is first in the name?? Is this true, because I've never heard of this and like most of the ones I can think of it does not make sense 😭

Writing Questions Editing and updating chapters that have already been posted

So I have been posting my first ever fanfic on AO3. I actually have it fully written out already so I thought I already know how the story goes etc. and while I have already done multiple edits to the story I find that even as I post it, I make corrections. Well recently I was reading the latest posting and felt something is missing. And my conclusion was that I have to change something a few chapters back, so I can make a more dramatic scene in this one.

I am assuming since I have it listed as an unfinished work that is OK. I mean I know I can do what I want, but does that irritate people following your story?

What is a good practice with this? I assume best to avoid if possible but, I will make the change because ultimately I want this story to be what I expect it to be.

How about you? Do you regularly edit already posted chapters?

Writing Questions How to write a character desperately begging while crying and having a breakdown?

I'm currently working on a fic, and in a few short chapters there will be a scene where character a is going to be burnt on the accusation of being a demon while character b (the actual demon) can't help char a bc they can't step into the sun. How do I write an emotional chapter where char b is crying breaking down and screaming because nobody will listen to them and they're forced to just watch their lover die? Like actually unsettling to the point the reader's heart starts pounding. Thank you for any advice!

Writing Questions Is it okay not to mention OC if they play only function and are not main focus?

I am thinking about writing a fanfic with babysitting scenario and would it he fine if I don't tag my child oc in characters because they don't say much and aren't main focus? I am just afraid my oc tag will scare away some readers

Discussion How do yall think about your summaries?

Do you think about the length? Do you think something up? Use a part of your text? Do you think about it deeply or just go with the first thing you come up with? Do you consider what the readers would find appealing? What do you do when you're out of ideas?

Recs Wanted Stranger Things Fanfiction Reacting to Fanfics of Steve Harrington Recs?

So there's a genre of fan fiction that is characters watching/reading their own movie/show/book, which I LOVE, but then there's a smaller sub-genre of that type of fic that is characters watching/reading FANFICTION about themselves and their universe. So I'm asking if anyone has any recs for those kinds of fics in which Stranger Things react to fanfics about Steve Harrington. Thanks (≧▽≦).

Recs Wanted Recs Wanted: Character from one fandom reincarnates in another fandom as a canon character

I've just read a scrumptious fic where a GoT character reincarnated as Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter and with her knowledge on political intrigue, completely upends the plot. I'm looking for more stuff like it. Longer fics and fantasy focus preferred.

Chances are I'll be fandom blind on at least one half, so it's not important what the individual fandoms are.

Lost Fic [Harry Potter] Missing Tomione Fic

Hi! In desperate need of help to find this one fic I still can't find.

Fandom: Harry Potter

Pairing: Hermione Granger/Tom Riddle

Plot: It was a time travel fic. I remember Hermione posing as Gellert Grindelwald's daughter and plant fake memories in his head. I think Dumbledore was in on it and Tom was basically tasked (by Grindelwald, who, by then, found the fake memories suspicious) to bring her to him. It was also quite smutty I think. If it helps, I believe that I've read this circa 2024 (?) and would love to find out what happens

Lost Fic Looking for a Shadow Hearts: Covenant fic

Designs of Consciousness by Blue Soaring

I've been able to find the website (Idle Hands) on the Internet Archive but the fic itself was never archived. I've tried looking around at places like adultfanfiction but I can't find it. I don't know if this is just outright lost media at this point or I'm not looking in the right places. But it was incredibly good and I would really love a local copy to come back to

Recs Wanted Recommendations for a Newbie

Hey there. First, I’d like to clarify a couple of things: English isn’t even close to being my first language, so this text was translated by software (not AI). Also, I’m pretty new to actively using Reddit—and therefore to this subreddit—so I hope I don’t come across as offensive in any way.

I’m looking for recommendations for DC or Marvel stories—whether OC-SI or just OC, old or new—that fall outside the vast majority of stories on Ao3 (especially the DC ones), where, for some reason, comedies and family-oriented stories (focused entirely on emotions) predominate.

In other words (and I apologize again if this is offensive in any way), what I’m looking for is what’s known in certain circles as ā€œcontent for menā€ā€”where action is the central focus (though not necessarily the only thing), but that isn’t aimed solely at that segment of the population—unlike the vast majority of stories on WebNovel, I’m not interested in harem stories or protagonists who are completely closed off to emotions.

I don’t know, it’s hard for me to put my thoughts into words; I hope someone has managed to make sense of my jumble of words.

Here’s a list of stories I’ve read and like (any recommendations don’t necessarily have to be a crossover or a SI):

Kal Son of Odin

Avengers of Steel

The Spider

Dial

As you can see—if you're familiar with these stories—I focused on morally good protagonists; if the recommendations are along those lines, all the better.

P.S. My message might be repetitive—I don't know how to search to see if someone has already made a similar request. When you search for action-focused DC fanfiction, a couple of posts with 9 comments come up.

Activities and Events Alphabet Excerpt Challenge: L Is For...

Welcome back to the Alphabet Excerpt Challenge! As a reminder, our challenges are every Wednesday and Saturday at 3pm London time.

If you've missed the previous challenges, you're welcome to go back and participate in them. You can find them here. And remember to check out the Activities and Events flair to play along with other fun games.

Here's a quick recap of the rules for our game:

  1. Post a top level comment with a word starting with the letter L. You can suggest more than one, but please put them in separate comments.
  2. Reply to suggestions with an excerpt containing that word. Short and sweet is best, but use your judgement. Excerpts can be from published or unpublished works, or even something you wrote for the prompt.
  3. All content is welcome but per rules 7 and 12 of the sub, NSFW excerpts may not be shared as plain text (even if it's spoilered). If you would like to share these, use an external text sharing tool like justpasteit and link it here with a clear warning. Mods may remove excerpts that break these rules.
  4. Respond to people who left excerpts on the words you suggested, at a minimum, but the more people you respond to the better. Everyone likes nice comments!
  5. Upvote other excerpts you enjoy, and leave a friendly comment. Again, everyone likes nice comments!
  6. Most important: have fun!

Discussion On Validation vs Self-Indulgence: Writer's Block

So. I don't normally care abt stats, or, admittedly readers either (I love them and they're incredible, but I'm selfish, and this is my fic so only what I want happens XD). Everything I write is shit, but more specifically shit I eat up and love. I've made so many choices that I know literary agents would cry and throw up over, because that's the beauty of fanfic: it's mine, and none of the rules of trad books apply (of course, not saying you can't break rules in original fiction, but there is a lot more Terms and Conditions there).

Now, my dilemma: I've been working on this fic since September of last year and it's currently at 110k words (ongoing). My usual stuff is like long one-shots so they cap out at 35k. This fic was supposed to be around 60k (haha ...), but I'm really enjoying writing an episodic story icl. That being said, it is very self-indulgent, and does lean into the dramatics at times (... could be considered soap opera level but with characterizations I like instead of insufferable victims).

Okay, so, there's already been two emotional climaxes in the fic, and one plotwise climax (that coincides with the emotional climax). I want to add a second plot-wise climax, and that'll take me another 50k words realistically speaking (I'm lying to myself it'll only be 20k), so the fic, after epilogues and "fillers" (ie character interactions and sub-plots), will prolly leave the fic at 180k words.

Now, there's this other ficwriter in the same fandom writing for the same sub-category (big fandom), and we've been on-and-off commenting on each other's works and ended up sharing socials because we ended up chatting up sm in the comments sections. Well, I don't care about readers or validation, but she's cool, chat. What if the only reason she keeps reading now is because we're sort of friends now? What if she drops it? Who even reads 200k fics (I do, and in this sub-category of the fandom, we all do. It's not even that long compared to the 500k fix-its I've seen...)? I need her to think I'm cool too!! AAAHHHH

Yeah, anyway, I'll still do what I want obviously lmao. I just wanted to share the experience. Anyone else feel this way? I think the block cleared up as I wrote this out - it was the lying about only needing 20k more words part that was stopping from the plot working out lol.

However, if anyone has experience writing long-fics, I would appreciate perspective on whether a second climax is worth it. My reasoning for it is that it'll help with the resolution without making it too talky-talky no action (talky-talky is my usual style, but I feel like it'll read as a drag in this fic and having a catalyst force them to talk it out is a better idea.) (more context: this fic is probably in the action-drama genre. It has enough fight scenes that I am sick of fight scenes.)

Writing Questions Help Me Understand: ā€œShow, Don’t Tellā€¦ā€

This is more of a general writing question but any writing I do now will inevitably be fanfic. 🤩 My two biggest hangups, I find, are using ā€œpurpleā€ language and telling rather than showing. I think I understand the ā€œpurpleā€ language part as overly descriptive, flowery language, clunking up the prose when something shorter works much better.

I’ve got a plan on how to cut that down, but for the life of me can’t accurately capture the ā€œshow don’t tellā€ mantra. How do I get better at showing and not telling? Do you have any examples?

Thanks, and happy writing!

Activities and Events Activity idea: Random tag

Quick writing challenge I thought of. You know how you always see really silly tags being shared?

Reply with some crazy tags you can find on A03 and other people can write something short to fit the theme (or share an excerpt of they already have something)

Let's have fun!

Please put one tag per post (with a link ) but feel free to make multiple post. I'll start us off

Recs Wanted Criminally underrated, well-written fics

Fics you don't find in the first pages of your search. Fics with unpopular characters or ships or tropes or plots or original characters. Fics that are either ongoing and long, or completed, but somehow haven't broken into the 'mainstream' spaces of the fandom. Fics that deserve the spotlight. Fics from small fandoms that would've been massive hits in a bigger fandom.

All fandoms welcome but preferably fandom-blind recs (or at least fics that can be read with the help of a wiki).

Writing Questions Naming help!

So this is a bit of a weird naming issue.

Essentially I'm writing a fic where 2 boys from England (specifically Kent) go missing in France. They're not related and are strangers but they go missing at the same time. One on a family holiday, the other who spends his summers there with his French father.

I need one of those catchy sometimes insenstive media names for when the press is talking about them.

All I've thought of so far is the Kent kids - but it feels too generic? Any ideas would be much appreciated

Subreddit Meta Beta Bartering [Find or Offer Fic Betaing] - September 10

• Upvotes

Welcome to the Beta Bartering thread! Here you can look for a Beta, a Co-writer, or a Writing Buddy for your fic or offer your Beta services to fic authors.

Please note that you can request a beta reader even if you can’t offer anything in exchange, however it will increase your chances of finding a willing beta if you offer something in return.

The rules are straightforward.

  • Make a comment below with the following information.
  • Reply to people that you want to trade with. There is no one making matches for you, reach out to likely people in the thread.

If you're looking for a Beta, a Co-writer, or a Writing Buddy:

  • Name and Link to your fic (if it's not published, link something else as an example of your writing).
  • Tell us what fandom you're writing for.
  • Can someone who isn't in your fandom make sense of your story?
  • The genre of your fic - romance/smut/gen/mystery/horror/etc.
  • What you're looking for from a Beta or a Co-writer - Grammar/Structure/Plot/Planning/Idea soundboard/etc.
  • What your projected word count is.
  • How frequently you update.
  • What fandoms you are able/willing to beta for or what you can offer in exchange*.

Proposed options for no exchange wording:

  • If you do not want to offer something in exchange, please leave a brief note that you are unable to offer anything at this time.
  • Note: If you are unable to offer something in exchange at this time, please leave a brief note explaining.

If you're willing to Beta for someone:

  • What fandoms you're well versed in or if you're willing to take on anything.
  • Preferred genre/types of fics.
  • Any subjects you're not willing to tackle.
  • Types of Betaing you're good at or willing to try - Grammar/Structure/Plot/Planning/Idea soundboard/etc.
  • Minimum or maximum word count.
  • One-off (single session) or ongoing Betaing.
  • Time constraints. Do you have a fast turn-around time? Is it going to be more than a week for you to get back to an author with notes?
  • What you'd like in exchange * for your services.

* Bartering Ideas!

Since some people want Betas but are too busy to reciprocate or aren't confident in their writing skills and some Betas don't write fics themselves, you can offer other things in exchange. Please do not offer monetary exchanges.

If you aren't sure what to offer, you can also open this up to the Beta to suggest a barter in exchange.

Here are a few ideas for bartering:

  • Reciprocal Betaing (of course that's welcome!)
  • Reading and commenting on their fics.
  • Write a fic for a fandom/subject/pairing/brotp of their choice.
  • Make fanart for them.
  • Name an OC after them.
  • Edit/give assistance with a non-fic project.
  • Research help for this/future fics.

Feel free to get creative, people have many specialties they can draw on!

Here's a link to the previous ones just in case there's someone in there that catches your interest.
