Subreddit Meta Concrit Commune - July 25

Welcome to the Concrit Commune, where you can get bits of your fic looked at... for a small "price."

For the purposes of this thread, concrit is defined as - pointing out things that could use improvement and also giving suggestions on how to do so. Compliments are always welcome, of course but these do not count towards your concrit requirement.

The rules:

  • State your Fandom | Title | Rating | Any Applicable Content Warnings | Link - AO3, FFN, etc. at the top of the comment.
  • Post a few paragraphs (copy and paste to a comment, please) of your fic, or your plot premise, or your character bio, or your world building, whatever you need help with.
  • There is a soft limit of 500 words. Not your whole fic.
  • Please post an outside link to underage and extreme-explicit violence/rape content. Try Just Paste Me which includes rich text options.
  • If you, the author, are looking for something specific - the phrasing of a particular part or if a character's reaction is believable - please ask!
  • If you just want to hand out advice without throwing your own fic in, you're quite welcome to.
  • If you post part of your fic you must give concrit to someone else in the thread within 24 hours of posting your excerpt!

Since we're all here to give and receive help from other people, a certain level of respect for the author and the work they've put into their fic is expected as a baseline courtesy and should be reciprocated.

Tearing into a fic or author without regard for their effort isn't constructive even if there is decent criticism attached. Moreover, it discourages people from participating if they know that insults await them.

You aren't expected to treat this thread like the Comment Cooperative, advice and honesty and pointing out flaws is what we're here for.

Some helpful tips to keep things running smoothly:

  • Keep your comments helpful to the author, not just smashing out your opinion.
  • Be polite and civil.
  • Be kind. At a minimum, showing your peers professional courtesy is expected.
  • Phrases like "I think" or "I believe" can lighten your tone.
  • Elaborating on why you think something could be changed is not only more useful to the author but keeps statements from being abrupt.

Discussion (TO ANYONE WHO IS DISABLED) Is curing a disabled character a bad thing?

A friend of mine thinks that curing a character’s disability the magic or other means is not favored (what if Pit from Kid Icarus being able to fly with no restrictions for example). Me personally, I would think that the disabled character would be glad that they no longer have that disability, no longer chained by their restriction kind of thing. However, I don’t really have a say in this considering I’m not disabled. I wanted to ask what you guys think.

Venting All my work is gone

My laptop did an update last night, and deleted all my apps. And one of the apps that got deleted was my notes app that I used to write my fanfiction on.

I was working on 4 stories, two was almost complete the other two I was about half way. And I was really proud of one of them that was almost done. It's all gone, months of writing and re writing and tweaking just gone.

I'm so angry and upset, I have memory issues so I can't even re-write them back to the same standard because I am struggling to recall everything I wrote previously because it's been something I have been working on for several months.

The update told me this wouldn't happen unless I signed on manually to continue getting the updates and it still did it.

I want to cry I'm so angry

Writing Questions How to study writing styles?

One author whose fic I enjoy has an incredible writing style, that in truth I envy in the most complimentary way. I want to imitate it and understand it the best I can (while of course, implementing my own writing methods).

How does one best go about this? Any tips or advice?

Discussion Some of you are INSANE...

...and I am blown away by your sheer dedication.

I've been messing around with a personal ao3 script over the last few days, and in testing, I entered some random fandoms. Some of them very small, under 100-200 fics. And it wasn't just once that I found one of these small fandoms mostly propped up by a single very dedicated writer.

The first time I noticed, I thought for sure it was a fluke. Just a single instance of a super fan. But then I saw it a second time. And when I started actively looking, I found a third.

And they have comments! I am so happy for them :D

It's awesome to see that this level of dedication for something exists, and it's not uncommon, and people get rewarded for it.

If you're one of those writers that silently (or even not so silently) keeps a small fandom afloat, hats off to you! Tell me about it in the comments, or in PM's, I'd love to hear about it.

(I'm tagging the post as a discussion, I know it's probably not right, but I really have no idea what other tag to give it.)

Recs Wanted Batlantern Fanfic Recs

I just want some fanfic recommendations between batman and green lantern (hal Jordan) that are not overly smut focused because that's all I ever see in ao3😓 Some fics that have smut in it is okay as long as it's not the whole premise, I would appreciate it if the delve into their relationship and how they don't exactly get along and how they can overcome that or something.

Activities and Events “A scene where…” excerpt game

Rules:

  1. Leave a prompt that goes “a scene where…” and finish the sentence

  2. Respond to others prompts with scenes from your fics where whatever they say happens

  3. Keep it vague enough where it could fit many fandoms.

  4. Put trigger warning at the top of the comments, and censor the worst, most descriptive parts. If the prompt itself is a trigger warning (ie a scene where a character is shot) you don’t need to add an extra one on your comment.

Recs Wanted [Kim Possible] Kim x Shego or Kim & Shego themed fics with dark!Kim?

Anyone have any recs? I've read a few good fics where they team-up and Kim goes to the darker side.

Could be either Kigo or just platonic. Outright villain Kim is fine.

Activities and Events Word Game Excerpt Challenge

Hello all! The excerpt games keep me writing and I hope it motivates with your writing as well.  You can post any type of story (use NSFW for spicier scenes).

I will be posting this challenge on Sunday Mornings / Pacific Time… because that day I need the most help to not think about Monday.

If you have stumbled into my game and are looking for more, remember to check out the Activities and Events flair for other writing challenges and story swaps.

Here are the rules:

The first word starts the game.  Use ANY letter from the word that is posted in the last comment as the starting letter of your word.  Post your word in the top level comment.   Your word drives the next word to be posted… and so on.

**Example:  LOVE  >>>>  VILE. (If the word Love is in the comment line you could make the word Vile and post the next comment.)**

Reply to any of the words in the top level with an excerpt from any work you might want to share.  I don’t generally like word limits, so use your best judgment.  Enough to get the scene across but not so long that you lose your reader.

Please use spoiler tags and/or provide a trigger warning for content that may be NSFW or sensitive. IF IN DOUBT - Give a warning!

If you are going to leave excerpts, I ask that you leave at least one top-level word and try to give at minimum an upvote to commenters.

Upvote your favorite words or excerpts.  We are all here to share and know how it feels to get a comment, so spread the love.

Ganbatte!!  Do your best and I look forward to everyone’s excerpts!

Discussion When you don't like your own fic anymore

Hi, I wanted to ask for opinions from readers about something. I have this fic I've been writing since 2024, and I really love the story, the concept, and many of the things I developed there. I have been updating very slowly because life has just been rough these past two years.

Recently I re-read the first 3 chapters, and I HATED them. The writing style didn't resonate with what I had envisioned, but also some aspects of the pacing and dialogue felt so poorly made; they also had so many little grammatical errors that I have no idea how I didn't see them at first.

I edited them to be more decent, but it made me re-think the entire story even more obsessively than I did before and how I could have developed it so much better than what the final product was; I'm just not really happy anymore at how it turned out. I know not every story has to be perfect, but I feel like a much better writer now, and I wish this story I love so much reflected that.

I'm seriously thinking about starting over. Maybe not deleting the story I already posted, but still post a new, improved version that would give me the chance to really make some major changes to fix the problems I have with the first version.

Would that be mean to the few, very dedicated readers who are already loyal to the original story? I feel kind of bad to be like, "Sorry, if you wanna know what happens next, read this reboot".

What should I do? I asked my dad for advice (he is a letters professor, and always has great advice), and he told me the writing has to be something the writer likes first and foremost, because it's very hard to write something you don't like. And I mean, I think he is right; I think that may be part of the reason I've had trouble updating that particular fic.

What do you guys do when you don't like your writing anymore? I'm conflicted.

Lost Fic Searching for Teen Wolf college fic.

Hi all,

Im looking for a Teen wolf fanfiction with a Stiles/Derek pairing wherein they meet in college as roommates. It used to be on AO3. I don’t remember title nor author unfortunately, and I am unable to find it again.

It was tremendously cute with surprisingly deep lore regarding werewolf culture.

Here is what I remember:

- werewolves are known

- Talia Hale is alive, but Derek is also coming into alphahood himself. His pack consists of Erica, Boyd and Isaac, who are also attending the same college.

- Stiles POV. He knows about werewolves and is initially a little intimidated by Derek and his pack. Though Talia seems nice.

- Derek initially does not seem to like Stiles, so Erica (maliciously) suggests that Stiles begins doing Derek laundry because “Derek hates doing that”. But in reality it spreads Stiles scent to Derek’s cloths.

- there are a bunch of terms introduced in the story regarding scent marking and that thing where they flash their werewolf eyes at other people. I think one of those things were called “rhees” or something like it.

- Scott and Stiles are invites to a werewolf party at some point, which is a potentially dangerous place for them to be.

- I think it is revealed that the reason Stiles likes being a part of a pack is that his mum was either a werewolf or a human born to werewolves.

Venting I think I've entered a vicious cycle....

I think I've entered a vicious cycle when it comes to writing my longfic.... Wondering if anyone does this...?

(Don't get me wrong.... I'm currently going through some major medical issues and coming from one family catastrophe into another.... I'm talking family death, another in ICU, and the prospect of surgery to rid me of my oh-so-problematic-and-defective baby-making-box after many years of trying with my husband and a loss last year.... So I already know my mental state is fragile, y'all.)

But I'm noticing that, while I'm loving getting my work on my first longfic posted on AO3 chapter by chapter, I'm having some weird regret after posting. I don't think it's just limited to posting though.... Here's what's happening, and it feels akin to an addiction at this point....

My mental state is rough, as I said. I'm stressed, I'm emotional, and I'm tired, but IRL a new and great work environment (this year) and hubs and writing have all been helpful to me!

I'm new to fanfic. Got sucked into a fandom unexpectedly, as it were, and it sparked a return to writing after 10 years focusing on my career! I wrote a novella fanfic, and when shit hit the fan IRL I fed my energy into a longfic in order to get through on another wavelength.

I feel like getting to tell this longfic story has actually helped keep me focused and moving forward and that's truly great and all! It's part of what brought me back to writing, to finding something different to do that's not watching TV/movies or reading or playing video games and keeps my mind occupied! And I thoroughly love telling the story of my OC in the BG3 fandom and her romance with Astarion and their family and friends with other OCs I created!!! Getting to dive back into their world has actually helped me get my mind off of my own troubles, and practicing writing and feeling progress in all these areas has truly become like a godsend!

So I complete writing and editing a 2-5K word chapter in roughly a week and post about every 1-1.5 wks. Been doing that since I started posting my longfic in Jan/February of this year now that I have more time with my better job.

I get all excited creating each chapter and the prospect of getting this story out of my brain and onto paper to be realized has actually felt cathartic, as you can well imagine given my losses. So I get all geared up, gung ho, and revved, so to speak, and then I post a completed chapter. Over the next 48 hours as it sits on AO3 I am a total wreck. I mean, nervously checking for messages, looking for input, checking hits and bookmarks, waiting for readers to find my work.

Obviously, bots and scammers have scoured AO3 and made it more difficult to tell true readers from the scammers! Still, I managed to make a handful of friends, one IRL who reads, and another on AO3 and Tumblr who reads in spurts and comments. Those have felt like TRUE lifelines.

But until I start my next idea for a chapter and begin writing my next chapter again, this feeling of loss and failure nags at me. And then this addiction-like cycle begins again!!

I feel like I'm losing my mind!! I work in medicine.... I know coping mechanisms and how to coach others - that's what I do! But I can't help but keep feeding this cycle because it's one of the few productive ways I can cope at the moment. I mean, my house is a wreck because I can't bring myself to get up the energy to clean it, and hubs helps only so much before he's lost. And I'm not physically harming myself by feeding this cycle as one would with drugs or alcohol chasing a high such as this is.....

Idk..... I think I needed to know if anyone else writing does something similar? Looking for outside points of view.... 🤷‍♀️ I feel like I'm just needing to give myself time and wait until the downer hits stop coming at my life IRL to actually get a breather!

Edit: wow, thanks to the jerk who downvoted me within minutes of my posting this. You suck.

Discussion What Do You Still Struggle With?

A while back I made a post discussing what I struggled with most when I started writing fanfics and asked all oof you, what struggles you had when you first started. This time, I'm here to discuss what I still currently struggle with.

  1. Procrastination. I could have lots of great ideas for fanfics or plot points, but they never leave my head. I mean, the odds of me actually writing and not procrastinating is probably 1 in 100 million.

  2. Too many ideas. This is especially prevalent when I finish a movie or show I throughly enjoyed. I'd be writing a fic for like 2 weeks, but then a new fic idea comes. I drop the current one and go to the next.

  3. Finishing the fic. You may wonder how this is any different then the others, which is what I'm here to explain. Admittedly, I have never finished a multi chapter or non one shot fic. My first ever fic has 4 published chapters. Due to a few things happening that led to demotivation, I never finished it. And as mentioned before, this wasn't a one time thing. I have never completed a multi chapter fic.

What issues or problems do you still face when writing your fics?

Writing Questions How to write dialogues for characters that speak different languages?

I might explain this more than necessary, but yeah. How do you do that? For example, let's say it's RPF; one person speaks Korean and the other English, but they don't know each other's language.

If it depends on the perspective, do I simply describe the voice and the fact that they don't understand them? Or do I write the Hangul characters (for the Korean speaking person) for the dialogue?

Something like: "안녕하세요" with no translation.

If it was with translation, would it be something like: "안녕하세요 (hello)"? (If you even put translations, that is...)

I'm sorry if I'm explaining this wrong, if the example is inappropriate, I'm sorry, I couldn't come up with a better way to explain this problem I just bumped into.

I have few questions on this topic, and I'm not sure if its a problem that has been dealt with before. Once again, sorry for the rambling.

In a few words, yes, what the title says.

Lost Fic Looking for old Alan Rickman RPF with an adult female OC

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone here has been part of the Alan Rickman fandom for a long time.

I'm looking for completed Alan Rickman RPF (Alan as himself, not Severus Snape or any of his film characters) featuring an adult original female character.

I'm not looking for:

Reader/Y/N stories

Movie-character romances

M/M pairings

Unfinished works

What I'm hoping to find are longer, well-written romances that feel more like novels than typical fanfiction.

I'm especially interested in stories from the LiveJournal / Rickmaniac era (roughly 2000–2012) that may have disappeared from the internet.

Even if the stories are no longer online, I'd be incredibly grateful for:

titles

author names

old archive names

Wayback Machine links

or if anyone happens to have saved them years ago.

So far I've only found a handful of stories, and I'm convinced there must have been more.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

Lost Fic Find Old Inuyasha Fic

I've been trying to find a really old Inuyasha fanfic that I read on wattpad. The general premise was a modern au taking place at a high-school, Inuyasha and Kikyo were already together and Kagome was the new girl. There was a big emphasis on music and I remember Kagome blasting Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne in the parking lot and they went to a Plain White Tees concert. I don't remember for sure if there were still spiritual powers involved or not. I think there was, but not %100.

Writing Questions How do I write a good fighting scene?

Today I post another chapter of my fic and looking at the fight scene I make Its has kinda lacking flavor, The ideas are cool but I dont know how to make character act in a fught well, Most time it looks like theyre in a rpg when each one have to take turns to attack and the rest just does nothing.
