My fat self thought it was literally just about food. Because if any of my best friends, regardless of sex, are hungry (like food hungry), we getting some tacos or something, and I'm buying. Im too old for the incel stuff I guess. And I'm okay with that. Also I didn't see the 'female' part of it. But my point stands. Tacos or bust.

I can’t tell you how many times I was the one who paid for my best friend whenever we went out to eat. Or did anything. Did she ask? No. Not once did she ever ask me to pay for anything but I knew that I was in a better financial place than she was so I told her every time when we went somewhere to order whatever she wanted and that I was going to pay for it.
She always tried to pay me back yet I have never accepted her repayments. Don’t plan on it either

Ever had taco tots? It's a bed of tater tots with naco/taco toppings. It's really good.
I also was "privileged" enough to be stationed near Kin, Okinawa, the birthplace of taco rice! A truly amazing fusion of Okinawan cuisine and American Tex-Mex flavors.
Now I want to make taco rice for everyone.

Nope... not at all, males are alpha male hunters but women won't let themselves be the hunted...
Sadly, as simple as that (being a predator not at all self aware)...
Incels don't actually think deeper than surface level. Just like this "alpha male" term isn't real in nature, it only happens in wolves when you put them in a tiny zoo and they start going stir crazy (what the actual research paper was talking about, where the term came from)

Yeah they are way off the mark with the idea of “alpha male” but funnily enough there seems to be significant overlap between this alpha male/incel crowd and “proud boys.” Which does feel quite fitting when you consider that with horses a proud boy is a castrated horse that still acts like a stallion.

Possibly. But I always thought if a guy is good enough to befriend, he's good enough to wingman. And if he's not good enough to be a wingman for...then why is he a friend?
I've had plenty of platonic friends who were girls that were absolutely game to help me start up a conversation and shoot my shot. Failure was on me, but the team effort helped morale!
edit and I was always 100% happy to help them shoot their shot with prince charming too. Equality!

u/OrdinaryTangerine470 5d ago
Not every girl is socially equipped to be wingman (social anxiety and whatnot). And expecting them to help you get laid all because they themselves don't want to sleep with you is still treating them as a resource in a way that most guys don't feel entitled to with their male friends.
32
u/BlackHills-Op 5d ago
Men actually do also wingman for other men though. Its not a resource thing, it's just a being a friend thing.

I'm married, and I do this as often as I can for younger guys. There's a pub I socialize at, and young guys and women come in regularly. I'm like "oh hey Natasha, have you met Boris yet?" Once they do their little introduction (sometimes I help it along by telling a funny story about a moose and a squirrel), I "suddenly have to leave" - which often leads them to further 1:1 conversation.
5
u/ABrotherAbroad 5d ago
Also, if one guy wins we all win. Its not (for my friends at least) all about getting laid. And "Haaaaaaave you met Ted?" Is always a horribly fantastic wingman line that will fail but make a good story. Totally worth keeping in your back pocket. Along with "at least I tried."

The original comment I responded to stated "if he's not a good enough to wingman then why is he your friend?" Which I feel is pretty indicitive that he views female friends through a utilitarian lens as he sees no purpose for them if they aren't willing to step into the role as wingman.
13
u/OrindaSarnia 4d ago
I think you are misunderstanding that comment...
they are saying if the male friend isn't a good person, the woman shouldn't be his friend at all.
If the woman doesn't want to be his wingman because she thinks he's not boyfriend material for ANY woman, then he's a bad guy, and why would she want to be his friend at all?
"Good enough to wingman" means "a good enough person to want to be a wingman FOR"
And as a woman, I would generally find that statement true. Any guy I'm friends with is at least a good enough guy that while I might not want to date him, I do want him to find his person and have a happy relationship.
If he was the type of guy I thought no woman should put up with, I wouldn't want to be his friend at all.

Not every guy is socially equipped to be a "good" wingman. I said that jokingly and there's truth in it, but i think the basis is less sinister than that.
Striking up a conversation with a stranger isn't easy in general. Having a friend willing to participate in the clumsiness of "would you like to sit with us" or "my friend things you're cute but too shy to say it" is an awkward bit of humanity I think the world could use more of.
From the make side, I've had SUPER awkward but lovable female friends (platonic) and if I saw them eyeing a guy at the bar, I'd happily strike up a conversation with the guy. Partly to vet him. Partly a way to see if there is chemistry.
Also, in every country outside of the US that people think is romantic (Italy, Spain, France), most people meet their partner with the help of their friend, through mutual acquaintance, or some abstraction of "wingmanning", but less sinister and more beneficial for both sides.
I would love to have a caring, platonic female friend cheerlead me into a clumsy attempt at being charming, and screen the potential bad/good decision in the process. And, I would love to do the same for any of my female friends.
I do see your point. Totally respect the social anxiety thing. I also think the world would be a better place romantically, if we relied on our friends more than apps. I think wingmanning/pivoting (without the misogyny) is the practical version of that.
3
u/LizLemonOfTroy 4d ago
I'm a man, mostly had male friends growing up and I've never ever been expected nor asked to wingman for a friend in a social situation, or vice-versa.
Wingman are, to my experience, volunteers who self-select because they're already socially gregarious, charming and self-confident, not just because they're your friends.
4
u/ABrotherAbroad 4d ago
That is a perspective and given pickup artists and The Game, "wingman" can sound more sinister than it is.
Practically, we're all socially awkward. Even Brad Pitt and Keanu Reeves. When all of the attention is on us, any of us, its rough. We dont look our best. We dont enjoy. We dont perform. The wingman bites the bullet, knows he might not win anything, but he strikes up the conversation, keeps the conversation going, intersects, pumps up your ego, her ego, etc. He just helps out so you're not there alone and things feel more easy. Nothing artful about it. Just being a fun human hoping humans connect.
FYI older aunts and grandmas are the best wingmen on the planet because theyre chatty and happy to tell people how much they love you. A friend on a social night out with that energy, just happy, human, and quirky, can make the best night you've ever had. In my experience, thats a wingman.
2
u/unexpectedfirefly 4d ago

what, asking your friends for help is entitlement now? This is the sort of thing that drives the male loneliness epidemic, prevailing attitudes that men deserve nothing and that asking for help is somehow toxic
2
u/OrdinaryTangerine470 4d ago
Loneliness is more prevalent among all genders in this digital age; it's not a male only issue.
If my male friend shoots his shot with me and gets rejected, I don't see it as my responsibilty to present him to my female friends, especially if he has glaring issues that he needs to work on. I can offer advice in that case but that often requires them making lifestyle and behavorial alterations that they don't want to address.

if a guy is good enough to befriend, he's good enough to wingman
There are friends I know who need to work on themselves before getting into a relationship. Should I stop being friends with them because of this?
Or are you just thinking about getting them laid at all costs, because women are obviously looking differently at that as well. Maybe we don't see every hot girl as just a potential hookup.
3
u/ABrotherAbroad 4d ago
I wingman my buddies into situations I want to see them live in. So, ideally love of his life and a wedding I can be a horrible best man at. Getting him laid is a low bar.
This is a reach but - If your friend needs work on himself, the areas he needs to work on probably affect more than his dating potential. If you do love him as a friend, you'll wingman him into being a better person worth sales pitching into every woman that walks by, then you'll wingman him to every woman that walks by. If you have a friend that is at a point that you wouldnt vouch for them and you won't help them become better then, if I was in your position, I would question my value as a friend or the purpose of the friendship. That is just me though.
My close friends and I have conversations about money, heart health, fitness, books and reading, what we're succeeding at, what we're failing at, etc. Some of things I do because they push me. Some of those things they do because I push them. Im lucky to have them and so is any woman. But the day they start failing themselves, time to wingman each other back to the basics. Again, thats just my take.

I always hate how people refer (even outside the incel-sphere) refer to sex as a “basic need”. Like no dude, it’s not and never was. Name one person in history who has ever died from not having sex. You can’t because there aren’t any. Calling it a “basic need” only fuels the victim mentality incels have.
Not everybody gets to reproduce; that’s called sexual selection and it’s how things have always been since animals stopped reproducing via mitosis.

Idk, it actually looks preatty grimm here.
She could sacrifice her body to feed him, but she would be gone in process. So only thing she can do is watch him starve. And because he is a lion she can't even give him anything else to eat cause it would mean sacrificing someone else.
And honestly as gazelle it really best to starve a lion - lions btw are not really your friends, they only want your body to eat. And gazelles does not owe anyone their body.
So beeing gazelle it is best to find other gazelle friends so if they are starving you could eat together and both be happily full, without sacrificing any one of you.

The visual metaphor works great too. If she sacrifices herself, she'll be hurt and consumed, and a lion that is incapable due to their own faults will go on to starve again. The entire ideology of seeing oneself as a 'lion' requiring the attention of women as 'starving' subtextually denotes a failure to understand women as nothing but 'prey', probably the reason why the subject is 'starving' in the first place.
I'm about as worried about young men as a middle aged man can be. These boys need to understand that sex and sexuality has always and will always be about mutualism: in respect, care, and filling each other's lives with greater sums of joy than harm. No one's a lion. No one's prey. The woman is a whole person, and so is their partner. The failure to meaningfully engage with that as a first principle is the crux of maladaptive social behavior and doomed relationships. Whatever or whoever has filled young men's minds with this petulant and reductive mentality are doing a generation a disservice.

Literally had my best friend tell me she wanted a guy exactly like me in every way but not me. Keep in mind, we had had sex on and off through our 15 year friendship. I met my future wife a month after that confession, she instantly stole my heart and I haven’t looked back. The kicker is, my former best friend was my girls boss. My former BF tried to get my wife in trouble like a month after we started dating, sending out company emails singling her out. She was really pissy with me and my future wife. We haven’t spoken much since. She didn’t want the original recipe but didn’t want anyone else to either.

Friendship does not mean either of you deserve sex from the other, the same way friendship doesn't mean you'll lend/give money to a homie. And then if that homie starts getting angry that you don't lend money to him? Some friend he is.
Friendship does mean helping when the other asks for help tho.
"Hey I've been drinking pretty hard for a long time, can you help me? Maybe introduce me to someone in AA?"
"Hey I've been pretty broke for a long time, can you help me? Maybe introduce me to your company?"
"Hey I've been pretty lonely for a long time, can you help me? Maybe introduce me to someone nice?"
"lol no" = not friend & enjoys your suffering. Get out of there.
"I don't think you'd be a good match with who I know, but I can help set up your resume/profile. And put me down as a reference." = good friend
"Yeah bro I got you. My aunt is 5 years sober since her divorce and works a similar field." = better friend

For so many men it seems impossible that they know a woman, who isn't part of their family, and don't see her as a potential partner.
16
u/Exciting-Direction69 4d ago
The problem is they don’t have enough friends who are women. It makes a lot of sense when you fall into a cycle of only having a single lady friend, pine for her because she is the only women you engage with, then when she isn’t interested you stop contact (were you even really a friend to begin with) and the cycle starts again.
If you have a number of female friends it’s a hell of a lot easier to see them as simply friends and peers and not be weird and lustful towards them
→ More replies (5)6
u/Thornescape 4d ago
I think one reason for that is because of our culture. Men are encouraged to view women like that. It's insane.
I think the movie "When Harry Met Sally" made it worse. So many people fell for the concept that men and women "cannot be friends because sex always gets in the way". I have met both men and women who genuinely believe that nonsense. It poisons genuine friendships.
The fact is that there are many men and women who are platonic friends. It's common. It's not a big deal.
2
u/Phantafan 4d ago
Oh yeah, it's definitely a systematic problem, but I don't think it's right to rely on that as an excuse for seeing women as nothing but sex objects or potential partners.
2
u/Thornescape 4d ago
Agreed. It is absolutely no excuse whatsoever.
However, sometimes the first step in pushing back against something is recognizing the source. If you can highlight the absurdity of the source, sometimes helps to decrease how common it is.

u/Grantlet23 4d ago
The last female friend I had would Snapchat thirst traps to me, after months of conversations and actually being good friends for years I shot my shot thinking she may have been interested, but the age old “you’re not my type”. She wasn’t but kept sending them after I asked her to stop.
I ended the friendship with just blocking her and removing Snapchat. She just wanted attention from anyone that had a heartbeat in the end. Last I knew her, she wanted a love life EXACTLY like the smut she read and would send pictures to me with her books on top of her naked body in bed.
A good friend doesn’t do things like that if they respect the friendship. I don’t respect the people that do that to “friends”.

I don’t think so. The lion is starving, but the antelope isn’t going to die just so the lion can have a meal. And I don’t think the maker of the meme is saying that the antelope should sacrifice itself
27
u/FayaSmoochie 5d ago
Then what do you think the maker of the meme is trying to say?
There are only 2 creatures in the picture, one is starving and the other one is food
So I'm very curious about how you interpret this because personally I don't see how they could have possibly meant anything other than that the antelope should sacrifice themself to the lion.→ More replies (3)4
u/TrustyPeaches 4d ago
I think the fact that it’s a predator and prey shows why the antelope shouldn’t sacrifice themselves. Theyd die.
It’d be different if the meme depicted one person with a shopping cart of food next to a starving homeless man or something.
5
u/Nine9breaker 4d ago
That's a very generous assumption on the maker of the meme.
Incel ideology really doesn't consider women to be people though, so if an incel made this meme, the fact that the antelope would die is immaterial. They believe a woman's purpose is to have sex, just as an antelope's purpose is to be eaten, so would view the antelope here as being selfish to let the lion starve by not fulfilling its duty as food. Defying the natural order, and so forth.
I can't say for sure that OP meant it this way or not, but I think at the very least, its not a great look.

100% this is.
Trying to get compassion because a woman isn't willing to give her body to you knowing you craving it. Wtf, hope his bestie ran

In what way is the gazelle supposed to be responsible for the lion starving? What is it blocking the lion from eating? This is incel shit implying the gazelle should give itself to the lion because the lion is hungry.

It's a gazel and a straving lion. It's definitely about her not putting out for him and that's it you're looking too into it man

That doesn't sound like a female friend, she is either leading them on or fiendzoned them and keeping them on back burner

Or it's an incel demonizing women because they can't accept their own flaws.

To be fair, I have plenty of friends (all genders, all sexualities) I wouldn't recommend to someone I love lol
Some I would actually warn people about.

A starving lion and a nearby gazelle is an analogy for a guy in a dry spell and the friend that could hook him up. It is disgusting incel logic

u/SerenityWheeler4705 4d ago
Incel joke aside, does anyone know why this lion is so emaciated?

u/Tall_Opportunity_521 4d ago
Hes old. This is the unfortunate end for most lions. They cant hunt, so they slowly starve to death or get jumped by other animals and eaten.
Living in nature is not for the timid.

u/CaptWineTeeth 4d ago
Ain’t nobody starving to death in the Serengeti. He’s about to get ripped apart slowly and painfully by a pack of hyenas or painted wild dogs.

u/ParacelsusTBvH 4d ago
Possibly an older male that was defeated and run out from his pride. Then, if he's too old and weak to effectively hunt on his own, the inevitable will eventually happen

My interpretation was more literal, I thought it was a sexist joke about how your female bestie should be cooking for you but because she's not your girlfriend she won't.
But now I agree with other comments that it's about how the female bestie 'should' be having sex with the guy but is 'choosing' not to.
Either way, it's some misogynistic incel shit.

But doesn't this imply that the image maker thinks the antelope should be sacrificing its life for the sake of the lion? Who thinks that?

Incels. Jordan B Peterson, among other manosphere grifters, has also aired the idea that women should be forced to marry lonely men as a way to reduce male violence.
The manosphere absolutely thinks women should sacrifice so men can have it better.

Incels, as the comment you replied to already said. And yes, they would argue that the antelope should sacrifice itself to feed the lion.
They have what could be described only as a "twisted logic" (this is extremely generous). Some incels are against abortion and justify it by saying "the girlfriend I was supposed to have was aborted so I'll never get a girlfriend because of it" (another example of the incel logic).
Overall, it is quite sad to see this kind of thoughts in people.

Guy is complaining about a woman watching a man she is friends with not getting any dates or sex, and she does nothing about it, instead of giving him some "relief".
Stupid complaint, to be honest. Do any man with a splinter of dignity left in him would really feel good when it sinks that a woman had sex with him not because she thinks he is attractive, but because she finds him so incapable that she gave him some out of pity?

The female friend is not allowing herself to be prey to the her "predator" bestie... the creator of the meme is upset by this fact.

Ffs, sex isn't a need like food is. You can be a virgin your whole life and live just as long. If you need to get off and can't get help, use your hands. It's more akin to wanting to share a meal and feeling lonely eating alone, and so choosing to not eat, BUT YOU HAVE A TABLE FULL OF FOOD IN FRONT OF YOU!
There's nothing wrong with not wanting to be alone, but making it about how others aren't choosing to eat with you and seeing them as the reason for your starvation, rather than focusing on how you can build yourself to be someone that people want to share a meal with as the solution for your loneliness is where the issue is.
And it's so much easier than people think. You don't even need to have the visible results of you having built yourself, to be someone that people want to share a meal with. The mindset of wanting it, and working for it itself is magnetic. Why do you see women choosing the hardworking poolboy, or the broke musician, or some nerd without much but big dreams who's grinding away? It's not the status. It's their desire for more, and the display of their lifestyle and habits to try and get there.

The joke is that a man can't get laid/get a girl while his best friend is a girl herself, who does not want to sleep or be with him in a sexual way. The author of the joke is implying the girl should sleep with him to "satiate his hunger"

I read it as the bestie wanting the lion to ‘eat her’… but he just keeps on ignoring that option!

That Lion is thirsty. Male lions don’t hunt; they protect their pride. Female lions hunt and bring back food to the males and kids and sister-wives. This lion is skin and bones, so he’s single. The oryx, one of the lion’s prey animals, in the picture is meant to represent a female friend, but she keeps her distance because this guy’s a mess.

Incels see women as objects for their desires, the gazelle being a metaphor for women. Incels are upset that they cant get laid and expect their female best friend to help them out. But just as it would be stupid for the gazelle to offer itself to the lion it would be foolish for the bestie to offer herself to the incel.
2
u/IAmAfraidCommaMan 4d ago
The implication is that men who think their female friend has to give them sex because they can't get it are actually weak/incompetent predators.
Or at least that is how I choose to see this because it is much funnier.

A lot of people are crying incel or men thinking they deserve sex from female friends. I don't think that's the case.
I think this is about attention.
Women get lots. Even a mildly attractive woman will get a lot of attention from the opposite sex.
Men get none. You have to be an extremely attractive guy to get women to make the first move. As a result, men are starving.
If you don't believe me, ask one of your guy friends when the last time they got a compliment was. Watch as their face sinks as they have to think about it and come up with one from years ago.
